Can anyone confirm that the Universal does not have USB host. Most places just say no but there isn't really any hard evidence of it. I know the processor supports it but did they put in the necessary circuitry for it? Whats strange is that the Universal's miniUSB port is the same as my Sharp Zaurus's miniUSB port and my USB host adapter fits in. Does not fit into normal miniUSB ports. Just the Zaurus which had USB host and the HTC Universal. Just seemed a bit odd to me. I tried it of course and did not do anything.
I'll experiment with this further and check that image of the mainboard closely.

This all hinges on the connector, and the hardware used to drive the connector. The Universal(and indedd, all mobile devices) use mini-USB connectors, which do NOT incorporate a host control circuit. This means that, since USB uses a protocol that might be termed as "Speak when spoken to", your device can answer the computer when it asks, it can NOT ask another device to speak to it.
To sum it up, you can't connect a pendrive to your PDA, but you can connect it to your computer, precisely because of the lack of the USB host controller unit.

My miniUSB -> USB host adapter from my Sharp Zaurus fits into only the Zaurus and the HTC Universal. Doesn't do anything in the HTC Universal though.

If you check on the internals, you will find that there is no power output to the usb port in anyway. so, its a hardware limitation and there is no way it will support hosting, be rest assured!

I found a thread in the German PPCWelt.info forum where several people say that there MDA Pro supported USB host, with a special driver:

I don't know how reliable this is (not every USB client can act as a USB host because of different hardware AND software), but perhaps you want to try it.

EDIT: They also say that your USB device needs a power supply because the MDA can't do that (external hub). Other people even say that without such a power supply your MDA could be damaged. This Engadget article is also mentioned:

I know that. I just wanted to know if the hardware was there for it thats all.
the hardware maybe there deep inside the cpu but the pcb lanes where maybe support chips were never connected rendering it absent

The XDA II has an external antenna socket, but I can't find what it is. I need to use an external as my boat acts like a faraday cage and kills all the signal!!
Even O2 don't know what the connector is. Can anyone either tel me or point me to an adapter / connector?
Looking at the back of the XDA II, its a hole with a rubber plug in it to the right of the camera lens. I don't know about connectors or adapters though.
on the back in the upper right corner is a black round plug.

The antenna I use is from a Sierra Wireless AirCard 750 and I believe you can purchase replacement antennas as well.
I know WHERE it is but no-body seems to know WHAT it is. Even O2 tech support said they would have to ask the manufacturer (but they didn't know how long that would take)!
Have you checked through an electronics supply catalogue (on / offline)?
Try RS components, Farnell, etc.

Take a look here: http://www.freedom-mobiles.co.uk/o2-xda-2-accessories.html they have an adaptor to plug in back of XDA II with FME connector on other end. Also there is a window mount aerial that uses FME connector.

I'm a member from Mtekk.com.au and this is my first reply here. I have found the Cellink Patch Cable for Motorola T720I, part number CAL2585 fits the XDA II antenna socket perfectly. As for the name of the connector, I haven't found this out yet. All I know, it isn't the connector pictured in an earlier post!

I have already searched for this... Now, having the right patch cable in my hands, I can say with 100% assurance that it isn't an MMCX male connector. It looks like a micro-miniature RCA male connector (no such thing, just my way to describe it!), with the outer shield contact cut into four. I have attached a pic of the MMCX connector specifications, and these look nothing like what is on the back of the XDA II. If you do find a match on the type of the connector, I would be very interested to know.

I wanted to notify you guys about something that we (my sister and I) accidently discovered. After I gave my phone to her (I get a new one) I installed NoData to prevent extra costs. I forgot to put the USB cable back into the charger, and somehow she got her hands on an Mini-USB cable and plugged it in. The day after, when I woke up, I was surprised that this cable did exactly the same as the original does. I've tested it with the PC also.
So for all users out here; you can use Mini-USB as well.
I'm sorry if this has been discovered already.

Yep thats been seen before, HTC uses ext-usb, which is just mini-usb with some added pins.

No, this is not normal. Additional pins only affect the audio.
Perhaps try a different cable.

Yes, it is possible. I am using PS3 cable, usually used for charge controller. It is possible to use another USB for phone, but isn´t possible to use HTC cable in another USB "holes"

I know this is a little old but for those who have the same problem, there are differences in USB cables, some are for charging only and don't include a wire for sync; you need to make sure the cable you are using is sync capable.
Is it possible to use this cheap 5-pin Micro-USB, type B - male to 4 pin USB typ A - female adapter to plug in a usb-keyboard to the note?
Or is it something special about these OTG-cables?

I have tried a simple adaptor and it did not work - there are very similar looking adaptors that are OTG though.
Personally, I prefer to use a mini Bluetooth keyboard with integral "mouse" touchpad or an OTG cable to connect a similar USB keyboard rather than an OTG adaptor as I worry that I may lever the adaptor by catching it and cause damage by the straining the micro USB socket in the Note.
When you plug in an OTG adaptor or cable, the Note comes up with the message "USB connector connected" - a plain adaptor does not cause a message.
The picture below shows, from top to bottom, OTG USB adaptor connector, OTG USB adaptor lead, Wireless mini keyboard with mouse "touchpad", Bluetooth mini keyboard with mouse "touchpad".
Both mini keyboards came with wireless or bluetooth receivers which do not work with the Note as, I assume, they need "Windows" type drivers. The Wireless one cannot therefore be used with the Note (even though it also has a mini USB connection - probably only for charging use) whereas the Bluetooth one does work can as it connects using the inbuilt Android/Note bluetooth rather than using the supplied mini USB bluetooth receiver.

USB-OTG (they're all the same) works perfectly with some USB keyboards and mouses but not with all of them. I'm using Genius mouse and Microsoft Wired 200 keyboard.

I have a mini-wireless USB keyboard/trackpad from Kogan that looks closer to the mini-Bluetooth one in the 2nd post, and that works fine with my usb2Go adaptor and the Note. I know both look similar, but the button configuration under the trackpad on mine is the same as the Bluetooth one.
I like the idea of the bluetooth one mind you!

meantime, I see you've got a wireless USB k/b already working via USB OTG. I'm awaiting my OTG adaptor so I can try that out with my existing (compact, but not mini) wireless k/b with optical trackball. Not sure how much current the Note can supply for OTG usage but I guess I can just use a powered hub if required?
Hi, I am relatively new to digital 'prototyping' so USB protocols and almost everything digital is new to me.
The long and short of my question is, if I plugged a standard USB flash drive into an OTG adapter, and then plugged all that into a micro USB to standard USB (which I doubt actually exists) and plugged that combo into a PC, would I be able to access the flash drive? How exactly do OTG devices VS 'regular' USB devices work?
From the circuit schematics I've studied, it appears that the only difference between a standard USB and OTG interface is a bridge across pins 4 and 5. So how would this affect plugging said OTG device into a PC?

Yes/no.
The standard (full-size) USB A and B connectors only have 4 contacts and 4 conductors.
The ID pin (#4) is only on USB mini and micro connectors.
You need to signal your cell phone to go into host mode.
That means that the connector plugged directly into the cell phone has to have a grounded pin #4.
Pin #4 is never carried over the cable.
In short, you need an OTG adapter plugged into your cell phone.
Modding other parts of the cable or the USB device you are using won't do anything.
You can (as I have done) take a razor to the connector that plugs into your cell phone,
take the connector apart and solder a wire from pin #4 to ground.
I've had a Galaxy Tab A 10.1 for over a year now and get the most use out of it by connecting a thumb drive via the usb connection (for viewing pdf files). It's worked great until a few days ago.
After connecting as usual there appeared a message at the bottom "something something disconnected" (the "something something" being I don't remember exactly what and the message disappeared before I could see) and now the usb/connection doesn't show up in the "My Files" window (just the "internal storage" and "sd" indicators, whereas before I got the additional thumb drive designation).
I've tried two different utg connectors, no good. I've checked the thumb drive in my pc, it's fine. I've tried connecting the tablet to my pc via the usb, it doesn't show up at all. I can still move files between my pc and the tablet via wifi but I want my usb connectivity back!! I suspect the connection the utg plugs into.
Also, (I'm not sure if this is a separate issue or related) battery recharge seems to take much longer ... is this a sign of the tablet getting old? I could understand if it was 3 years+ but 1 year??!!
Thanks for any help or ideas as how to fix this!

I'm assuming you are using an OTG cable to USB Drive or a micro USB drive right? In other words the part you plug into you Tab is a micro USB and not Type-C USB? If it is micro USB and not Type-C try this ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGGdsMsK3VU. If it doesn't work the pins inside are probably damage and you need to replace the OTG cable or the drive, what ever you are using. If Type-C USB same thing. Needs replacing. Those pins ware out over time and use. Thats my best guess with out pics and further information.

Yes, I'm using a usb (to take the thumb drive) to micro usb connector. I suspect it's not a connector issue as I tried three separate connectors and none showed a connection to the tablet (i.e. the thumb drive did not show in the "My Files" page as it used to) ... all the pins on all 3 connectors look good, the fit into the tablet port is tight, no looseness. I've looked closer at the micro usb port on the tablet and I'm beginning to suspect that's the issue as a receiving contact on the outer edge seems to be damaged (possibly) ..

No Problem, I've never had a female Micro USB port go bad on me , but have heard of it happening. A good tug in the wrong direction I suppose could pull the solder connections apart or maybe even damage the innards. Is the Tablet taking a charge? I'm a little confused to actuality what part your referring too. Here is an image explaining what the different types of USB's I think you are using. Tell me what color circle you think is damaged. Or if you are using something else entirely different.
