broken hemes :(

can any1 help me out here i just bought an 8525 for 80 off a co-worker he didnt want it because it keeps turning off on him i think its a few loose connections...theres a bit of play in with the battery but anyhow changed batteries same thing so any one know what part i should be replacing and also where i can get parts for this phone. i have tried looking on the site that i use for my other phones but all i find are screens and black housings so if you guys can help me out i'd love it

anyone im looking at it right now and all seems well and i tested the battery on a different fone and everything is green just cant figure it out. also just found out that my jogwheel is broken

That could explain why the co-worker sold it to you for 80 bucks.. .. you might be able to find parts on Ebay .. see if anyone is selling one with a busted screen or something..

thats exactly ehy i got for 80 i knew what it was just hoping for an easy fix i do repairs tho so no biggie just gotta find the parts thanks ill start looking once my ass friend gets off myspace!!!

It can't be a "loose connection" unless the solder from the battery connectors came loose because he battery connectors are connected right to the board.

thats one thing i noticed also the prong look like they have been squished down almost flat instaed of < they are more - but not that bad and there is quite a bit of playu from the battery compared to my good 8525 oh well maybe i can come up on a third and swap out parts. thanks for the help guys any other suggestion i have already kinda fixed the prongs. and now the phone wont even turn on this suck but i know this can be fixed

I dealt with a similar case a while back. Going off randomly. In his case it turned out it was the battery connections. They had lost some of their spring tension and he was unwilling to try bending them out a little for fear of causing more damage. In the end we decided that he would try placing a strip of card between the battery and the casing on the side opposite to the battery connections. ie. to press the battery more firmly against the connectors. How thick it would need to be would depend on how squashed the connectors are.
It worked for him and he decided just to leave it in place.

Crushed my Uni's LCD, now I need to decide what to do

Hi all,
a few hours ago, I somehow - don't know how - managed to destroy my beloved Universal's LCD screen. Now there are two huge deadpixel areas with colored lining and the rest of the display doesn't work correctly either. I am pretty sure there's no way of repairing it.
The thing is, that I have another Uni at home, that has a broken USB port. I took it to a service company and they said that the MB is fractured and they would have to replace it, which would cost over USD 700. Yet I think that they might have lied and that the phone could be repaired just by replacing the USB port. I can't say for sure though, as I don't have the skill needed to open the device and check it..well I could actually do without the skill as the disassembly manual is pretty easy to understand and follor I'd say, but I don't have the correct screwdriver Anyway, that is my situation. Now I have two options and I would really appreciate it, if you shared your opinions on what's better:
1) I could take the working LCD screen for the Uni with broken USB, and let some service company replace the other uni's broken LCD with it. Or, I could do it myself, if it wasn't really difficult.
The advantage is, that it would probably not take as long as the other option, so I could use the device again sooner
The disadvantage is, that the Uni that is now in a state where it MIGHT be reapired (again, maybe the service guys were right and the whole MB is beyond repair), would be completely useless.
2) I could buy a new LCD on ebay (about USD 160 incl. shipping). Then I could try to repair the USB port and sell the then-working Uni for some USD 400, maybe more, maybe less.
The advantage of this option is, that I could make some money.
On the other hand, it would take much longer before I could use my Uni again and, in case it's the MB that is broken, I wouldn't be able to sell the other device and could easily end up spending some 160 USD for a display that I could have for free.
Well, sorry for such a long post, I see that I could have been a bit briefer, but if you made it all the way through to here, I'd like to ask you for your opinion. I am currently thinking that the first option would be better, but I'm nowhere close to a decision. Thanks a lot.

well, if i were you id do the following:
buy a battery charger to be able to charge your uni with the broken usb and then sync it to your pc by using bluetooth instead....
one uni up and running...
for the other uni that has damaged lcd... i suggest you bring it to the service center and let them look at it (to be on the safe side)... if you know what you are doing, of course doing it yourself will be faster.....
now while your uni is in the service center.... you can use the other uni that has the battery charger instead...
dont know if you like my idea though... hope they helped...

Thanks for a fast reply Your idea is really good, but the problem is that I don't have BT in my PC and I don't have the battery charger either. Even though I could buy both of them, my Uni would be probably back from the service center before it arrived And the fact is that I will probably be able to do without the Uni for a while (I have a Nokia 1600 as a backup phone so I will be able to keep in touch with ppl and even though I will miss all the stuff Uni offers, I should survive )
However, your idea has led me to a thought that I might be able to sell the device together with the charger and BT module, I don't know if anyone would like to buy it though. And even if someone did, maybe the money he would give me for it wouldn't even cover the cost of the LCD I'd have to buy.
Anyway, thanks a lot for sharing your idea! If nothing else, I now realised that I can use the dead-LCD Uni to charge both Unis' batteries and use the dead-USB Uni while the other one is in repair =)

I picked up a Uni in a market in london for 20 quid ( i Know ), the screen was broken, hence the price.
I basically bought it because in was in very good condition, i was going to take the innards from my uni and put them in the broken unis case.
I got back to the car and plugged the broken uni in and it worked, apart from the cracked bit on the screen.
I took it home and swopped the screens over, it took about an hour, now i have taken my uni apart before this, to have a look and to see if i could replace the touch screen, wasn`t working correctly, but i am in no way an expert at it.
I have included the dis-assembly instructions with this post, i would highly recomend you have a go yourself.

i have the same problems before.if ur usb port is broken,u can repair it for cheap so that it charge ur battery again,but sync via usb will be forever disabled.and bluetooth wont help.as for the screen,u can swap the dead usb screen with the dead screen one.and then u'll end up with 1 perfect working uni (and swap the housing too,so that the working one will have the slightest scratch) and 1 junk uni with broken usb and broken lcd.as ppl in the used pda store can tell that ur usb is broken without reparing the lcd,just tell them u have broken lcd and want to swap with their other used phone.i swap it with another uni for usd 100.

Just curious, if you haven't sold or sent this unit anywhere yet, does the motherboard on the one with the broken screen still work 100%? If so I'll buy the motherboard off of yah . At least that way you can cut your losses and at least keep some money, I'll buy anything else that works 100% too. I'll leave you a PM.

Thanks a lot for the instructions! I think I will check with the service center first though, and let them offer me a price for the repair and then, if the price is too high, I'll try to switch the LCDs myself. Well I'd actually like to switch the whole upper part of the device (LCD, D-pad, webcam, etc.), because I guess it will be easier and apart from that, the older one (the one with working LCD) is in a better cosmetic condition

So you gave the used-PDA store a Uni with broken USB and LCD plus USD 100 and they gave you another, fully working, Uni?

i need a long coax cable!!!

my g1 has a ripped long coaxial cable that connects from the umts board to the motherboard...
when i put the phone back together that cable was too close to a screw and the screw pinched and ripped it in two spots, and i already tried connecting it back together and taping it but didnt work...
so now i have a perfect looking and perfect working rooted g1, but with no signal or reception lol. but wifi still works.... weird.
anyway, i need a new longg coax cable and know where to find one online but they dont sell them separate
they sell long coax cables with the gps chip for $40 and all i need is the cable.... can anyone help or point me in another direction??
i appreciate any help!

while that one looks to have the correct Hirose ends, it is 6" long...its gonna be a tight fit to get it in the case! I already sold my spare long cable, I wish someone would put a screw through the short one for once!

Ironically this same thing just happened to me yesterday- ive been panicking all day trying to just "stick" the two ends (i cut the wire and cleaned up to ends) together- nothing works
I am getting no signal but there is a sim present- i tried a factory reset (obviously didnt work)
I just ordered that wire from ebay for 1.99- im worried however that it will be to big, I know that the wires from a laptop are often bigger than in a mobile phone..
If this doesnt work out- are there any other places I can look to get just that wire without a whole new phone?
Also- why is it called the GPS antenna when it seems that its inhibiting the cellular signal...?

I think that ".81mm" is a good sign... i dont have a caliper here but looking at the wire from my phone in comparison to a wire I ripped from a laptop here (newer toshiba that was served a cup of coffee sometime after its warranty was up) you can see that the g1 coaxial cables (on the right side of the picture attached) are indeed sub millimeter.
Perhaps this means we can fix these problems for 2 bucks (well 5 after shipping)
granted i have no clue what im going to do with 6inches of that... guess it will be stuffed away somewhere in there...
I hope that doesn't effect my signal either- would a longer cable produce any sort of lag between the motherboard and the antenna module?

Yeh the wire posted on ebay is too big- i ended up just buying a broken g1 for 80 bucks.. all the spare parts i need now minus the main circuit bored which was damaged by water apparently (assuming screen digitizer works though)

well i ordered one a few weeks ago and it was a little long but worked perfect. i made the extra length fit into the phone and works perfect havent had one thing go wrong. i have an extra one if anyone wants to paypal me some money and ill send it to you in an envelope. guaranteed to work like a charm!!!

[WARNING] weak or poorly fixed power button

This is my second Iconia that got broken power button in 4 weeks!
First one was returned to the shop within a week (second hand shop with one month warranty) and replaced with another one which was working just fine till yesterday night when my kid pushed the power button (she is just 2 year old skinny girl) and the button got stuck and did not respond anymore.What can I say... too fragile .This button is supposed to be pushed about twenty or so times a day.I never had such experience before.All my portable devices are nice and sturdy and even if i drop them by accident I've never ever got anything more than a scratch.Even though I loved this tablet I would say that this is a weak design point.Too fragile for a device of that class and price tag.
More interesting is to see what Acer's answer would be.I have no proper purchase receipt to claim my 1 year warranty since the item is second hand (mint, but second hand) and if they say they will charge me for the repair I will definitely quit the Acer's camp

This has been mentioned here on the forums several times and the issue boils down to the fact that they've used cheap adhesive to attach the power-button to the motherboard.
It is actually pretty easy to repair yourself, though, just remove all the previous adhesive -- be careful not to scratch anything on the motherboard --, possibly heat the thing a bit with hairdryer or whatever you have in handy, and apply new adhesive while applying pressure to the contacts so that it doesn't come loose again. Just make sure you're using adhesive that is non-conducting! This whole thing takes about 5-10 minutes.

Yeah anyone needing to clean perhaps some rubbing alcohol and a little brush, it evaporates quickly

Oh, and Acer Japan were not so polite and said that because of my inproper use the button got lose.
They mentioned that the repair would be too costly because they need to change the motherboard...
and the estimte was about 400 USD .Cool isnt it ?The guy on the custmoer support line was perhaps a good guy ....without any technical sence and knowledge

Hah. As if, it's already documented and easy to prove that they didn't attach the button properly. It is not end-users' fault in any way or form.

They were just trying to squirm out of the responsibility. They know perfectly well that replacing the button costs about 2€ (including taxes and postage!), it does not in any way or form require replacing the motherboard.

hummm did you get that 400.00 quite by email.. or was it a phone call.
Acer has a fixed 199.99 fee for all repairs on Laptop and tablet computers. The guy you talked to was misleading.. go to there website somewhere it tells about this.. I MYSELF Have called acer about getting a Gateway notebook main board replaces.. 199.99 . I FOUND the board on ebay for 70.00 and did it myself.
the support guy saying up front that you broken is IS VERY Not there way of doing business. They are always we dont know SEND IT IN We will then tell you.....
Call back and talk to another person and Complain ... about the other guy.

Could you possibly show how you did the repair job? I working on trying to install an external power button, and this would be quite helpful. The tablet is going in the dash of my car, and the power button wont be accessible anymore.

Sorry, I can't remember the thread where there was pictures of this. But really, it's not difficult. You just heat the old glue so that it comes off easily, you can even scratch it off with something sharp just as long as you're REALLY careful about not scratching the motherboard.
Buy or loan one of those tiny solders clocksmiths use, they're great for small electronics work and a heatgun. Oh, and I still remind once more, whatever glue you're going to use please do make sure it's non-conductive.

Alright, I'll see what I can figure out. I think I've found an alternative to this, so we'll see how it works out. Thank you though.

Hi, I was wondering if you could help me fix my tablet like you did yours. I have found LOTS of forums with ppl with this same problem and have tried to fix it myself. I don't know what to do. Some say to solder it back, some say hot glue, I can't even get the mother board all the way off b/c of the black tape/sd card/ whatever thing that's holding it attached right by the HDMI slot. My A500 has had a broken power button since July 2012. I used to plug it in or use a safety pin to reset and when it lit up I would unlock it and keep using it. That worked until the day I let it die completely. Now that it has died completely I Don't know another way to power it on besides using the power button. Could you post pics????

Today i got my hands on curious thing. My friend was drunk "as he stated" and somehow he was able to tore off USB port from his beloved HD2. Crazy right, I didnt even believe it was possible as I am an owner of HD2 myself. So Im thinking about maybe try to solder it back together (if possible).
There are some pictures as attachements so you can take a look. The casing isnt damaged at all, its like that USB just fell of.

Connector seems burnt, just curious what you'll find inside... If the mainboard look like this that's bad news.
A new connector is cheap but there are different shapes of the inner part so it is possible that it won't fit, check before you begin to solder.

Looks badly burnt to me.
I suspect mainboard no good for repair but worth checking first.
Quite easy to pick up an EU version HD2 for around 40USD (faulty handset) on eBay if can spend a bit of time looking/bidding and in good shape except digitizer, then simply donor best parts to complete one working rebuild.

I had a hd2 in a similar condition and attempted this. I failed and it killed the mboard straight away i would only attempt if you really really need too ;/

hey buddy, thanks I will be really carefull. I cant really tell you what good is a phone like this without USB connection (and dont forget charging), so this is "operation: must do". Sorry for your HD2 though.

You can pick up a new usb socket from eBay/amazon etc.
It is quite a tricky bit of small soldering & can be very hard if contact points on board are broken below board.
Worth a try but not easy ... If you do succeed, once tested working ok use PU40 adhesive sealant to pack around sides & back of socket as will insulate & help secure socket hopefully helping reduce chance of fracturing joins or dislocating completely again.

Yup! USB is already on the way. Thanks for tips buddy, I will check back here when its done , it should take few days untill new USB is here.
