fieldtest users: need help! - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Hi, I'm developping a sublayer to abstract the way the developpers use CellID, and the methods to get the datas from different devices.
I reverse engineered fieldtest.exe and would like to test it. I contacted some of you, and none gave me the informations I was needing. The problem is: I think I have the correct request, but don't know what kind of structure it is. If you could provide a screenshot, it would be a great help to quickly identify the structure.
I don't have a Hermes, and I cannot try it by myself.

This way, you'll be able to use a DLL to get cellid which will work on many devices, because it uses COM port method, GSMTestMode method, offset method and soon (I hope) fieldtest method.

I will try it when get home, so i can run a backup in case the worst happens and i need to hard reset

It's just an application, it won't brick your device
Anyway, It reminds me to make one.... It's always useful to have a recent backup...
It will show only "0" for now, because I don't have the gsmcelluloz_log.txt files made on HERMES to understand how the answer looks like. But shortly after I'll have those files, it will show the real values.
Please add a fieldtest screenshot to help me identify the fields

Find dll functions from rom dll

Not sure if I have worded this properly as I'm at the edge of my knowledge but I wish to call a function that I am assuming is in a DLL which is contained in ROM. I know the name of the DLL but how can I get a list of functions available from it when I cannot copy it onto my PC?

Hi Tailor.
First, what function exactly are you looking for? There may be some documentation on it somewhere.
To browse a ROM dll you need to get a ROM dump. The simplest way for your purpose, provided you have a WM5 device is to search for TESTWM5.exe by mamiac on this forum. It will dump all files to your SD. They won't be workable for coding purposes, but still good enough to use dependency walker to get exported functions from DLLs.
Unfortunately that still won't tell you the parameters the function expects. only its name.

Its a Sony Sat Nav Windows CE 4.2 device so unforunately theres not much chance of a ROM dump or documentation. Then unit is sold as a finished product and not intended for further developement.
I have installed TomTom instead of the poor app already installed and was trying to get access to the hardware buttons and Light sensor on the unit and then intended to use the TomTom SDK to recreate their functions.
The keys don't not trigger a key press event but their are DLL's called something like powerbutton.dll and navbutton.dll and so it's a fair guess that they could be used to trigger these events.
Obviously without knowing their exported functions I'm not going to get much further.
Any further thoughts ?

How exactly are you trying to catch the key events?
For what you describe, you don't just need to know function names, you need to know with what parameters to call them so this is definitely not the way to go.
If you are coding with C++ search for info on SetWindowsHook. I am not sure of its implementation on CE, but this might be what you need.

TyTN cellid?

Hi. I am writing a freeware social networking application based on location services ( http://www.fightersoft.ro/mts/index.htm ). Although many devices are supported, it seems that the HTC TyTN isn't. To that end I acquired one and now I am on the quest on getting the cellid in my application.
The approach that should of worked was the COM port. However, no matter what COM port I open, I get a create file error. I am guessing that maybe the internal modem uses a weird port name such as COM550 or other letters instead of COM. I know that another way of getting the cellid is by using ril.dll (or even getting the handle to the gsm modem com port). However, in WM5 this is not documented at all on msdn.com - BUT for WM6 there is documentation.
Firstly, I want to ask anyone if they have extra information about this issue and secondly if by upgrading to WM6, the using the COM port approach works from the box (usually COM9)?
hi, I tryed many programs, which have actually support for cellid information, but no one work on herm, no matter if it was WM5 or WM6. on all phones, I had before it worked correctly... phone alarm also have this functionality, but shown only something like 00-00...
This is so frustrating. Every mobile device with GSM capabilities has a GSM modem insinde. That modem SHOULD be accesible from the OS by the means of COM ports. My guess is that this port is hidden or under a different name than the rest of the HTC devices where it resides on COM9.
CommMgrPro shows Cell Id and Location Area Code correctly on TyNT
I started this thread in the hopes that people will contribute with ideas towards getting this task done. Can you reveal any technical information on how you get the cellid information?

Sure. Ril.dll gives you access to this information and works properly in WM5-WM6. And technically is easier than manager serial drivers......
Documentation isnt included in WM5 so it isnt "official" but realky It is included. The only problem for "not official" issue is you wont get support from microsoft....

Basically I only need the cellid and the lac. I found that msdn.com offers documentation for ril.dll for WM6. This also works for WM5?
From what I learned from msdn.com is that I should do a ril.initialize first and then I should get the cell info using a fuction that I can't remember right now. Is this approach correct?
Lurker0, I know about this approach (I have mentioned it in my first post) however, I need more information because c++ native is not my primary envoirement for developing. That's why I kept searching for a way of getting the lac-cid from com ports so that I could do it directly from managed code.

Exactly. I downloaded Platform builder to have includes and libraries.
1) Initialize Ril
2.a) Request Position explicitally using a RIL_gettowerinfo
2.b) When you initializa Ril you can pass a callback to be notified upon location changes....
Did you read the source code for RIL interface that I pointed you to?
danielherrero, I see. Regarding the callback function is not neccessary in my app - the user or the app set on auto mode searches for changes in location. Thank you very much for your info.

SecurIt 1.1: Sim/IMSI checking opensource security for us all

I'm been working on this for a little bit now since I found all the existing apps don't work well in WM6 or don't work well in a custom rom. This is a open source program (as all of mine are) and I welcome help/donations/and comments. Bug reports will be helpful in this first release as I certainly consider this a alpha release at the moment.
What it does:
once setup at every boot it compares your IMSI number with the one stored, if it's a match it plays a little sound and that's it. If it's not a match, it locks the device and displays your email and a request to please get it back to you. It also send you the "new sim's" imsi and phone number via a SMS.

Version 1 (BETA) Instructions:
This security applicatioon can run loaded normally via a cab file to your device, or via being cooked into a rom. It will require your phone able to run unsigned code (most roms at this site are fine in this regard). Furthermore it does require the .NET Framework so it's really for WM6 devices, WM5 will be more tricky and is left up to the user to figure out how to make it all work.
When first run the program resides in \windows and must run from there. If you ran the cab installer it will have created a shortcut for you into the Programs folder.
The application comes up with a form showing you the current device imei, imsi, and phone number. You need to enter a password (needed to disable security programmatically or change SIM info), a email you can be reached at my a "finder" of your phone, and a SMS phone number you'd like alert messages sent to. Once done click set. Finally, click Enable security.
The application then sets itself up to autorun upon boot and if the SIM matches, it plays a little sound file to let you know everything is fine. If the sim is found to have changed, it will lock down the device until a password is entered. Meanwhile it shows your contact email and has sent the alert sms to you with the new imsi and phone number.
If you enter the proper password the program will take you to the settings screen where you can reenter the password and make changes to the settings and resave them. Simply clicking enable security without making changes will keep the settings as they are.
Clicking disable security will remove the autorun entries and remove the data file the programs keeps at \windows\SecurIt.dat.
The data file keeps 5 lines, MD5 hashes of your imei, imsi, password, and also your email and sms phone number as plain text. Thus stealing this file does not enable retrieving the password or easy changing of the imsi. Deleting this file however would remove security. Furthermore activesync will still link to a locked device. Knowledgable people about these devices could therefore defeat this security, however it's goal is to keep the casual theif / finder out of the phone.
This program is a work in progress and I welcome help with modifications to it as well as bug fixes. Source can be found at:

To cook this into a rom, you need 3 files. 2 of them need to be generated when you first install it like normal and set it up. Copy the SecurIt.dat from \windows and the SecurIt.lnk from \windows\start up to your rom as well as the SecurIt.exe file. It's that simple. Enjoy!

1. Why do u keep email and sms phone no in plain text instead of encrypting them as well?
2. Instead of storing config in a file, store the config in registry which lessens the chances of someone finding out about the prog and deleting the file to disable security.

number 2 is in the TODO list...
#1) we could encrypt them as long as it's not a one-way hash like the first 3 lines, however those are the bits of data we don't mind the theif/finder seeing afterall as they are the means to get the phone back to its rightful owner. I suppose we could hide them but the phone number will be on his next bill for sending it a SMS and the email is displayed on the locked screen.
And as walshy said, #2 is certainly on the todo, but locking our activesync connections is a bigger concern and I believe completely doable.

Keep up the good work..I myself was thinking abt making smthing similar but now I think I'll drop my idea to make a different one, as this seems to be a better idea (opensource is always better )..
I hope I can make some contribution to the code if possible..

What advantages does this give over "Mobile Justice"..another similar util...my rom has Mobile Justice cooked with it which makes it hard to remove.

Ok, for starters mine isn't based on assuming every device has a GPS built in (while technically being a Trinity owner I should go that route). I instead base mine on nicely locking down the interface so far with a polite message to get the device back to the owner. Furthermore mine is trivial to build into a cooked rom which was my main reason to write it. I tried every security app out there over the last weekend without any of them working "properly" and figured the best way to get one is to write one. In addition mine is open source, mobilejustice is not.
Now then, you said you're not using it... But the last post said you had it cooked in? WTF? Need some help deciding what you use and don't use?

1) The rom I currently have installed comes with Mobile Justice preinstalled.
2) I have not configured and am not currently using Mobile Justice
3) The author is currently taking suggestions for software to include in the next revision of their rom.
What part of any of those statements are you having difficulty comprehending?

Well than back on track... Give it a try and see what you think. I really want feedback from folks outside the USA as I believe it will not properly catch your phone number of the "thief's sim" however if the sms works it should still get the phone number to you obviously.
The GPS coord. request feature is a nice one and will have to go on the todo list.
well, well, fights apart, what drew me to this app over the other apps was the opensource nature as mentioned by Shadowmite because I, like shadowmite, was not happy with the other apps doing things properly or just because I wanted somethings to be done differently..

@shailesh, for sustaining hard resets, it has to be cooked into the rom, pointed out by shadow on post 1..
I don't know if something else can be done for this (writing into ext rom is one option but that is not possible for most devices now)
Sounds like a great piece of software. And open source is a great idea too.
I did tried several others like this one (Eye on the thef, Ultimately Theft Alert ...) some features were still missing :
First an autoconfig method :
As already said, whatever your storage methode is (file or registry), you 'll everytime lose the configuration when a hard-reset is done on the device. The only one possibility i can imagine is to store your "installer" program on extended rom with the ability to add an external config (encrypted) file as a parameter.
Installation will be handled by the autoconfig process, using this external file. Config will probably needs to be stored on extended rom too. It's not peace of cake to create an extended rom, but easier that cook a rom.
This feature won't be very helpfull if there is no way to generate a config file automaticaly base on settings done by user : kind of export process.
On standart start/soft-reset, your program will run as it does actually, but when a hard-reset, is proceed, programm will reinstall unattented and will still be running after boot... No way to easily remove it. Bad effect is that it will also be difficult to update programm/config.
Secondly, i'd like to have the a way to "format"(or encrypt) a memory card remotely.
Do you thinks those could be part of your TODO list ?

Did not work for me Tornado with Crossbow-Rom, i think you may ask maniac for the Offsets, he created CellProfileSwitcher, an very useful SmartPhoneTool with a huge list of compatible devices.
In Combination with your Tool it may be useful to create my own "CellMap", to see my Homezone or some other kind of zones, switched by CPS,yea.

Hi again!
The problem was because I've installed app on card, not on device memory.
Cell searching works excellent, on my phone works GSMTestMode method (I am going to find out the differences between methods, but don't know where).
By the way - user interface for smartphone (non-touch display) looks like not fnished - 'backspace' keys doesn't work and it is difficult to leave edit mode too.
Will test it more and make some enhancement

What Compact Framework needs the CellulozCF? I have the 2.0 and the app doesn't work (I get the unexpected error: Microsoft.AGI.CommonMISC.HandleAr() in System.Windows.Forms.Control._InitInstance.
I think the best cell id application from all times ever would be that which can change phone profile depending from location. I saw someone here is trying to do it, but will not be free, so no use. An app like that will eclipse all other... it will be like the next step in mobile evolution. Probably japanese already have it.

Cell id Command line

Hi All,
Is there a tool which can get Cell id and LAC from command line for it to be used by other apps
Say I have script (mortscript)
Then I can call <Cellid APP> and get Cellid location where the device is
Then take action based on the Cell id.
Idea is to track the phone and let the owner know where all the phone on a web page.
I go from HOME -> LOC1 -> LOC2 ->Office (everyday)
Incase phone shows a path HOME -> LOC1 -> LOCX -> <UNKNOWN> .. the send a TEXT(SMS)/update page etc ... to alert the users.
Kind of way to make your phone secure.
Any suggestion if it can be done with any exiting tools and mortscript etc ...

what it can do is dump all to a LOG file ... I am using a Mortscript
1. Run the app
2. make app to dump logs
3. get the details from the file.
4. close the app.
Now loop this for with a sleep ...
But still looking for better way.. Attached is the file for anyone who is looking for similar stuff.

Basically you call 'RilCmdLine.exe' with a parameter indicating what field you want. It returns the field as an int to MortScript (I think you need MortScript 4.3b1 or above?).
Supports LAC, Country Code and Cell Tower ID.
The zip includes a test mortscript - you may just need to edit the path to RilCmdLine.exe
(Source code on request. I may even support it )

Thanks for the exe file. However I am unable to see any result when I run the exe/mscr on my mobile (HTC 3300 WM6). I did edit the path also executed from cmd line on mobile.
Also Mortscript RunWait and Run will not return any results as per the Mortscript doc. So the result has to be redirected to a file.
Could you please check and let me know if the exe is required to be executed with different parameters.

Unfortunately you can get all the values at once (at the minute you can only return numbers from the exe, so there is no way to separate them).
My original idea is something along what you suggest - if I get that working I will post a new exe up here.

Thanks onionfx! This is just what I was looking for as well. Trying to do something similar to what wishme said. ;-) The common profile switchers out there are not very useful to me because I'm more of in a rural area, and cell towers are farther apart, so my home and work cellid overlap sometimes, so I want to also take into account signal strength to see if I can fine tune it better. Will probably use Mortscript since it's the only thing I've learnt to code with for Windows Mobile.
I'm bookmarking this page to see if you eventually get the prog to output all in one line (and reduce the CPU churn of calling the same prog several times).
BTW, how about also returning nearby cells in order of signal strength? That would be awesome to fine-tune your location even more!

Doing some thinking about this
I can't see any way of returning all the values at once.
The C code can only return an int in the range -2,147,483,648 to 2,147,483,647 and my CellID and LAC are 5 digits each so if they ever started with a digit greater than 2 I couldn't return it.
The 2 best options I think are writing another exe that dumps the data either to a file, or to the registry in a similar way as riltest above, but without the UI part.
Then write a script that could be included, and which has nice subs to access each parameter (or you are free to write your own script calls to do this).
I'm tending to the file as I imagine reading from the registry is a bit slower than reading the file (in one go and storing all the params as variables)?
Also I can do less damage if I use a dedicated file!
Anybody got any better ideas, or has a good reason to use the registry?

Also is it possible to get all other the cellids at any point not the one phone is connected to ? I have not see any app providing this info.
Except for Google maps on mobile (without GPS) it uses triangulation technique to get the Latitude and longitude of a location with all cell id locations available. for this method to work we requires atleast 3 cell id.
Does RILCELLTOWERINFO gives details about other towers also ?
I wonder what the requirements are for the command line tool?
It locks up when I run it on my MotoQ smartphone.

I can't get this to work. I get "-1" for all 3 values. Anyone offer any reasoning as to why this may be? I believe my ROM includes .Net framwork, but I'm not sure how to check.
