BACKING UP CONTACTS

Is there any better way to backup contacts list rather then Microsoft Outlook?
I've seen a lot of different softwares around.
I just want some advice of an application that runs ok on 9100 and keeps my contacts safe.
By the way, the worst thing about using windows is that you KNOW that some day it will crash and you will have to format the device. It's dismissable.
I agree with you. I would love something that was able to export contacts to an XML file (and sms to a series of text files) just so I didn't have to pretty much relie on having access to a windows box.
Enjoy!!........... http://www.jeyo.com/companion.asp
As has been mentioned before, in the root directory of My Device there is a file named pim.vol. With Calendar/Contacts/Tasks not running copy this file to another location such as your storage card (don't move it!). Voila! There's your backup. No muss, no fuss.
Good luck!

I was wondering how to back up my contacts too. Thanks for the info!
You're welcome, I was just passing on what I also learned here.
Another thing I do is to use outlook to save an exported copy of my contacts as a .pst file on my PC. I don't sync my pda with my PC but I do periodically allow a sync to take place during which I set up the connection to "replace what is on the PC with what is on the device". After doing so I export the contacts to the pst file, somewhere on my PC and then delete all contacts in Outlook (it's not my primary email app). By deleting them I don't have to worry about hackers getting into them, and I'm then prepared for the next time I want to sync them for the purpose of backing them up.
Then I save copies of both the pim.vol and .pst files to a storage card that I keep locked up.
So i just need to save the pim.vol . And if something happens and i need to format my device i only need to put the replace pim.vol and all my contacts tasks and calendar will be restored, its correct
thanks
i use Shozu ( www.shozu.com ) lets me upload my photos right to Flickr, and as a bonus backs up my contacts. woo hoo
shozu looks good, however the wizard doesn appear in the list of compatible phones? What is the way round this?
How do you use the PIM file as a backup? I recently hard reset and then tried to copy the PIM file from my storage card back into the memory of the 8125 and I kept getting an error message that stated that either the file was in use or memory was not sufficient.
any thoughts?
u can use this contacts backup tool from buzzdev.net

Restore SMS (.csv file)

Hi,
I had to do a hard reset on my HTC Touch and i couldnt backup my messages before that. But i do have an file with all messages in it on my Mac via Missing Sync... messages.csv
Is there a way to get these messages back on my ppc?
Thanx a lot in advance!
Can missing sync not restore the csv file it's backed up?
So what program made the .csv file, since you double posted the same question in the PIM Backup thread can we assume you used PIM Backup to create it? If so use PIM to restore it.
No, it was made with Missing Sync, but it's not possible to restore them with that program. Pim Backup also does not do the trick
Didn't think it supported that file type, but your post over there got me confussed, maybe you can find someone with MS Outlook and use that, MS Office has supported csv files for years. Anything beyond that, I don't have a clue, guess this will be a lession to start backing up your pda.

Contacts Folder somewhere????

Is there a folder somewhere that has contacts stored in it? It might be in some code or it might not, just looking for a way to send a file of contacts through email. I have SPB and know the other ways, but really want to find a folder with the information in it. Does it exist? Thank you.
Ok found it. it's pim.vol in the My Device folder. can't do much with it as it's basically read-only and cant even delete it. so copyin and pasting won't work as the original folder can't be written over or deleted. sure there is a workaround somehow...
If you sync with a computer, you can export everything to either individual VCF files through Outlook and then zip them all together, or export as a list of comma separated values. Not sure of the best way to do it phone-only, though.

Try PIM Backup. It's free and do the job. Besides it can backup many other things such as contacts, appointments, task, ...
I'm using Pim Backup and for some reason it won't open the .pib files it creates to back up my phone info. The website says you are supposed to be able to open the .pib file with Winzip (yeah right). Am I the only one going through this?

The file may be corrupted during the creation process. Did you tried on multiple files or just one. It never happens to me.
If PIM doesn't work, there is an app called Jeyo mobile extender and companion that will work. But it's not free though.

[Q] .pib to .csv file conversion

hi all,
I had a SE Xperia X1 running on WM 6.5 and i backed up all my contacts using PIM backup for windows mobile. the back up file is saved on my storage card as a .pib format. I have however been understood that the only way i can transfer these contacts and texts to my new motorola milestone 2 running Android 2.2 is by the means of a .csv file.
Is there any way that i can convert this .pib file format to a .csv file format? i would appreciate any help out there as i am new to the Android OS.
Thank you
Rename PIB to ZIP. Open it and unpack file. That file (CSV) would be import to Google Contact (GMail). After that you may to synchronize your mobile with GMail and all your contact will be shown in Android phone.

thanks so much. juz a small doubt....when u say import to google contact, how about do i do it. and will my text messages be backed up as well?
thanks very much
You must to login on Gmail from your computer (www.gmail.com) and go to your contact tab. In this contact tab you have a option for import CSV file. Import it to your Gmail account, edit contact if you wish then logout from Gmail.
Then synchronize contacts from your mobile phone with Gmail. After that, all your contact will be see on your mobile phone.
Only contacts will be backup. SMS is not possible for backup.
Hint:
In PIM Backup you must set backup only Contacts without any Binary or Compressed option.
