Vista Connecting =( - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

On my old PC my 8525 connected to XP no problem, than I upgraded to Vista (dual-booted actually) and it just stopped working on both XP and Vista. Now I have a new pc and my problem still remains. I connect my 8525, sometimes the orange light goes on, sometimes it doesn't. When I installed WMDC (newest version) it didn't recognize the 8525 as being connected, so it installed drivers for an unrecognized device or something along those lines. Then sometimes when I connect the 8525 to my pc, it installs drivers for the 8525, and the box that says "enter your passcode" pops up. I enter it, and it'll either say it's wrong ( when it's right ) or the box will disappear and nothing will happen. It just never connects and I really want to put music on it. Any advice is much appreciated.
Edit: I went into ActiveSync on the phone and deleted all the PC's it had partnerships with already.

Read MrVanx's guide. It contains just about everything you'll ever need to know

I tried the guide but it didn't work because in Device Manager nothing shows up... no matter which USB port I put the 8525 in, it doesn't show up anywhere.

delete partnerships off the PC also, and temporarily remove your passcode.
try unchecking the advanced network functionality box in settings/connection/usb to pc
if worst comes to worst, backup stuff on your pocket pc and hard-reset

>>try unchecking the advanced network functionality box in settings/connection/usb to pc
Look for a "Windows Mobile Remote Adapter" in the network section of Device Manager. If you've already tried to connect with the "Advanced Functionality" checkbox checked, then the mobile remote adapter may have gotten installed. Once that happens, changing the "advanced functionality" won't help, and you won't be able to connect your 8525.
You need to unplug the 8525 from USB, then go into device manager and remove the mobile remote adapter, then change the "advanced functionality" checkbox on the 8525, and then connect your device again..
This is what happened to me, and how I finally got it working. Hope it helps you.
Brian.

There was nothing in Network Adapters or anywhere in Vista about it. I tried removing the password and connecting it without the thing in USB to PC checked off, still no luck. I would back everything up and hard reset but I've seen so many posts by people saying they've hard reset, lost everything; and then they came to realize it still didn't work =(

Isnt that the point of backing up, so that you DONT lose everything?

^^ I still lose all of my programs and all of them are on my old pc

If you get a trial version of spb backup and do a full one, it does more than just contacts and such, it'll do EVERYTHING, so when you put everything back its exactly the same as when u left it. Programs included.

Active sync problems!!!!!! (with pics)

was going to upgrade to the new exec ROM today.... except Active sync decided to fail on me.
I'm running 4.1 on windows XP (SP2) and when i connect the exec via USB NOTHING happens at all, the little icon doesn't even go green or anything. i just get two "bum" and "bum, bum" sounds lol
However the LED on the exec does turn orange (the charging mode colour)
any help is much appreciated on how i can resolve this issue.
thanks everyone!
Check your ActiveSync connection settings (file -> connection settings) and make sure USB is enabled.
done that, and it is ticked....
i have also tried reinstaling active sync....
Turn OFF all your firewalls and try it again.
done that too........ followed the whole trouble shooting thing aswell... all in vain...
in the device manger from my desktop, under "network adaptors", "windows-mobile based device" is showed with a yellow circle with an explanation in it. it then states uunder "properties"
"The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28 )
To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver."
The usual reason that ActiveSync has is the firewall. I pull out my WiFi card, disable the firewall, then connect the cable.
Once the unit has been sync'd I can put the firewall back on and get back on the net.
YMMV.
If your firewall wasn't blocking it before, then it might not be this.
quck update. when i coneect now, in the task bar a little bubble apears stating "new hardware found"
then a box appears with "Found new hardware wizard" on it.
i have a similar problem:
when i connect, activesync does recognize and attempt to sync, but when it starts 'looking for changes', it never ends! it keeps on 'looking for changes' for ever, or at least VERY LONG, ending up with an error on my PC saying that synchronisation failed and that i should restart my desktop computer, which doesn't solve thw problem..
with my blueangel i never had this problem, although i was using activesync 4.1 already back then too..
ideas, anyone?

i used to get that problem before, it seemed to resolve itself :?
but now nothing happens, not even the swirly motion of the active sync in the taskbar, the LEDs on my exec is the only thing that lets me know its connected.
This is exactly what I have on my computer too. The only solution for me is to turn OFF windows firewall and all other firewalls I have, then active sync works as it should be. You have to remember to turn OFF all firewalls BEFORE connecting your Universal via USB for it to work. It will not work if you connect the Universal first then shut OFF all firewalls. It has to be the other way around.
Ok i have a simlar problem, but let me explain first:
I upgraded to winmobile2005 on my Himalaya which went well and without a hitch. I was on my parents pc and i active sync' without a problem.
Ive now come home, and i cant sync. It sits there saying 'Retreaving settings...' and just doesnt go any further. Ive soft and hard reset device, checked firewalls etc - no luck.
It has identified the old active sync name, but nothing else. I can explore the device before it crashes after looking though about 5 directories/downloading large files.
How can i remove the old sync information from the device (as i guess this is the issue)?
Cheers for your time,
Sam.
have you tried to delete that partnership?

If you already "Hard Reset" your device, then whatever information on it has already been erased clean to factory defaults, unless you are restoring from a backup program after the hard reset. Then I suggest you restore to a file prior to performing an active sync connection to your parents' computer.

Well yes it used to do that on WM2003, but it doesnt on this version. And im not using a backup program. Unless the program auto-saves to my storage card in some way? In which case whats the active sync file im looking for?

you're right! it did! (i already had turned firewalls off, i always do, hate them)
and to tbe last poster: are you using activesync 4.1 at your home?
Regarding Firewall
I've posted this earlier in another thread, but I guess it is not bad to post here again
Regards
------------
Thank you for your suggestion, I would however say this "Be Careful", I would NOT turn firewall completely if I were you guys, IF I have doubt that it is due to firewall, I would turn the firewall ONLY for the Universal interface
pls find the steps here
1. Start
2. Settings
3. Control Panel
4. Security Center
5. Windows Firewall icon in the lower part
6. Advanced Tab
7. UNCHECK the Network Connection that represents your Universal
Note,
A. To be sure that you are not disableing firewall on the wrong interface, please rename your Local Area Connection (x) to your Pocket PC device, so then you would know for sure you are dealing with the RIGHT connection (I use SPV M5000), renaming it is very easy, right click on the connection in the NETWORK CONNECTIONS, then RENAME
B. Disabling firewall for all connections IS VERY DANGEROUS especially IF YOU ARE ONLINE or ON A NETWORK, you might get SERIOUS problems, from viral infections to Hacking (only God knows)
C. The above applies only for WINDOWS FIREWALL on Windows XP Service Pack 2, I have no idea how to do it with Zone Alarm or ANY other software as I dont use any, but I think there must be someway to do so.
All the best & good luck.

Yes, both locations have v 4.1 installed. Does no one know of the files i should be removing on my PDA then? :S
Blofse : there are no files to remove - you've already said that you've done a hard reset and returned it to the factory settings which removes all user data and therefore, the device has nothing on it at all about partnerships with computers - i would suggest looking elsewhere for a resolution.
Budo : I think your problem is the yellow symbol on the network card entry in device manager. In this case, I would unplug the exec, righht click on this network card entry and click remove. Then uninstall activesync. Make sure the actve sync folder is deleted and check the windows\system32 folder for files called rapi.dll and ceutil.dll (these might have gone during the uninstall, but check anyway).
Reboot your PC and reinstall activesync before plugging in your exec again.
Hopefully, this will sort you out but post back if it doesn't.
Cheers,
Smiffy.

Can't get 8525 to work under Vista (32 bit)

Hi all, I have a frustrating problem with my Cingular 8525. I just formatted the comp and installed Vista Ultimate on it fresh. I downloaded WMDC but I can't get it to recognize my phone for the life of me. It keeps saying "connecting" forever and never does. I have done all sorts of installs, re-installs, hard resets, but I can't get it to detect at all! Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

first try to install the driver of your device.. go to device manager and look for unknown device at OTHERS..
good night and good luck
The driver is installed... it displays HTC USB Sync. I am getting frustrated . Stupid Vista.
USE the search function dude
Hermes vista config guide
Also make sure you dont have any firewalls active. I have had issues syncing my phone with my computer when using AVG's firewall. I simply disabled the firewall and it fixed my problems.

I already tried that guide... still not working. Ill try disabling the firewall
go to settings->connections->usb to pc and then check Enable Advanced network functionality.
If that doesn't work remove/uninstall htc sync device, unplug device and plug in device to reinstall the htc sync device after you have set the usb to pc connection settings.
Also try using a different USB cable and plugging it into a different port, you never know, it could just be something defective.
But I'm putting my money on the firewall
I had a problem connecting my 8525 to my Vista machine. It would say connecting but it would never finish 'connecting'. It took a while but finally I figured out what was causing it. It was the 'recording' .wav files in the notes directory that were causing the issue. If you have any .wav files in your notes directory I'd suggest moving them to say your SD card or deleting them. That fixed the 'connecting' problem for me and since I did that it's been syncronizing fine ever since.
I tried everything listed in here at once.... something worked I should have done each step by step to pinpoint what exactly... but its working now. Thanks everyone!

Same for me. I had a load of problems getting the Mobile Device Center working with my HTC TyTN. First I was unable to even install the driver when I first connected my device. The "add new hardware" wizard always tried to connect to Windows Update and install an updated driver which then failed. The solution was to let it fail and manually install an older driver from the list using the icon in Device Manager. After that I could start Windows Update and download the latest update.
Then I had the same problems as you describe. When I started WMDC it just hung while displaying "Connecting". Looking in the task manager I noticed that the wmdc.exe process was consuming more and more memory, up until something like 250 MB, after which WMDC just showed "Error". Finally I got it to work. It is hard to pinpoint exactly what I did to fix it. I know that the "advanced network features" under USB in connection settings on the TyTN need to be ticked and the device showing as a Windows Mobile Device instead of HTC USB Sync.
Initially I did a hard reset of the TyTN. Further, I manually unistalled and reinstalled the driver in Device Manager a couple of times. I tried to reboot both the computer and the TyTN several times. Also, I did restart the "Windows Mobile-based device connectivity" service after plugging in the cable. Finally it just recognized my device and I could setup the partnership. Now I can sync over bluetooth too and skip the cable.
HTC phone support was not very helpful with this problem. "We will call you back". Yeah right.
Mobile cofiguration:
Dopod 838 Pro
LVSW 4/17/07 WM6
Hard SPL
PC configuration:
Windows Vista Business Edition
I encountered the same problem. Currently able to sync back by hard resetting my device. The USB to PC connection on settings does not appear to affect the sync problem.
I suspect that the problem arise when I originally sync with an XP machine.
What worked for me was to enable the advanced usb setting on the phone as mentioned...then while the phone is still plugged in, I removed everything associated with the phone from device manager on the pc. Once that was done, I unplugged the cable, waited a few seconds, and plugged it back in (with the advanced usb settings still checked.) Worked like a charm with WMDC.
I had problems with all sorts of "connectivity" in Vista, including connecting up my Trinity, and setting up my xbox 360 as a media extender.
As soon as I uninstalled MS One Care it all started working.

Activesync working w/t Bluetooth but not with USB

Hi,
after upgrading my unbranded HTC Tytn to more recent WM5 version through official ROM upgrade from HTC (italian version QTEK_405), the activesync connection only works if I connect via Bluetooth or IR.
The USB connection doesn't seem to work anymore.
Activesync seems to try to connect, but after a while I get the "cannot establish a connection..." message.
Checking the Network Connections on the PC, it looks like there is in/out traffic packets on the device, but nothing else happens.
Also tried on another PC and same behaviour.
Activesync version is 4.5 build 5096.
Any idea also how to test that USB connector is working properly, to narrow down the problems ?
Thanks in advance
Did you try disabling the "Enable Advanced Network Functionality" checkbox in START-SETTINGS-CONNECTIONS-USBtoPC?
Also if your are running WinXP or Vista... with your phone connected with the USB cable. Check in the Device Manger, for any "unknown devices". Select them and remove.
Now disconnect your phone from your computer. Then do a "Soft" reset on your phone. Now reconnect through the USB and does it recognize it as a ppc device?? now try to ActiveSync again!!

Yes, no success.
I can see in the Device manager that the network card is replaced by a USB device, but nothing happens on Activesync side.

Tried that.No unknown devices.
I've uninstalled the newtork card corresponding to the Tytn, disconnected and soft reset the device.
It seems to reinstall it properly, but still same behaviour.
One thing that makes me wonder is why the device shows as Windows Mobile-based device #3.
Anything I can do to celanup this ? It looks like it's got some old device hanging.
What about ActiveSync on the ppc? Do you have the "Synchronize all PC's using this connection" checkbox checked? Does it point to "USB" below the checkbox? What do you have in that MENU-CONNECTIONS... screen on the PPC?
Damn it Ive been having one problem after another with my 8525 just when I think things are going good there is another set back.
My phone wont sync to my computer anymore. I have Schaps 4.20 installed and I installed the cube earlier today just to see what it was like because I was going to upgrade to shaps 4.3. Now its time to upgrade and when I connect my phone to my pc i get a message that says "usb device not recognized"
What the heck is going on?
I uninstalled the cube from my ppc did 2 soft resets, restarted my computer and it still wont recognize my pcc
Im getting a message that says "one of the devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it"
It goes on to say "Try reconnecting the device. If windows still does not recognize it, replace the device."
None of this sounds good. Im stressing out!
After two hard resets I finally got it to accept Shaps 4.3 rom. It still wouldnt do it after the 1st and 2nd hard reset but for some reason, the last time I connected it via usb, it worked.
THANK GOD! I dont know what happened and why it wouldnt connect but Im happy I fixed.
Activesync 4.5 Stuck saying "Synchronizing"
The post above saying:-
Did you try disabling the "Enable Advanced Network Functionality" checkbox in START-SETTINGS-CONNECTIONS-USBtoPC?
was the solution to a major headache I was having with Activesync 4.5 on a new HTC TYTN II connecting via USB. It would sit stuck with the sync indicator turning / swirling and a message saying synchronizing, but would not be doing any synchronisation!
I disabled the "Enable Advanced Network Functionality" in START-SETTINGS-CONNECTIONS-USBtoPC it it immediately began synchronising. Thought I would enable it again and it went back to just hanging there, definately needed to be disabled to rectify the problem.
Thanks.

I have to disable that on both my wizard and my trinity when syncing with either my XP computer with active sync 4.5 or my Vista computer which comes with WM Device Centre. The problem is since putting an otherwise rather excellent 6.1 rom on the trinity, nothing happens at all with that option disabled. With it enabled it connects but has the problem described above. On my wizard a message pops up when it establishes a connection, nothing happens on the trinity though. It was fine before with the original ROM. I am using [WWE][20-10-08]NiAx Trinity 6.1.70 BlueAngel - OS & SYS 20748 [ONLINE] any thoughts on what could be going wrong here?

activesync will not run

i have tried several soft resets, hard resets, uninstalling activesync, reinstalling activesync and none of my computors will recognize my mogul. i have checked settings and for the life of me i can't seem to figure whats going on. can anyone please help?
Try this, go to:

Uncheck "Enable advanced network functionality"

i have the same problem. uncked the advance network settings, no go.
have synced before.
now looks like pc doesnt even see ppc plugged in.
wierd cause usb will charge phone but no connection.
One other thing I had noticed on mine during all this was that once the phone was in this state I would have to manually stop Active Sync on the phone and then reconnect to the PC.
try deleting the activesync partnership on the phone (not the pc)

In activesync under menu|options|delete
I don't know if this is relevant to your issue but I had the same problem however, I was connecting my phone to my PC via a USB hub. I connected great the first time and when I tried to connect the second time Active Sync on my PC would not find my phone. What I ended up doing was unplugging my printer from the USB port on my PC and plugging my phone directly into the PC and it found it fine. This also happened with a card reader I have. I guess what I'm trying to say is that if you aren't plugging your phone directly into the USB port on your PC that may be what's causing the problem.
i have looked in the activesync on my mogul and the options isnt bold face print. the options is empty. im at total loss. i call a sprint rep and they said it was the phone.
I had the same problem, it went away when I updated the ROM!
Active sync worked for a about a week, it would not connect so that I could install applications, albeit I could browse the device using the explorer function.
(all of the following failed: deleted active sync profiles, disabled firewall, reinstalled activesync, hard reset and tried to use sprite backup restore (for contacts, which failed))

quinn, how did u flash a new rom if u can't activesync?
Try everything here first:
http://forums.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/ShowPost.aspx?postid=2620369&siteid=65
Then try a hard reset before flashing.
still stuck
i read the microsoft forum and to be honest nothing there helped me. there was another person on there that had the same issue but no one there seemed to resolve it. has anyone found a workable solution? i have read in another forum that i would have to call sprint because it might be an issue with the phone. i would try that venue except my phone has been flashed to cricket. any suggestions?
I had the same problem after spending lotof time trying all the things already posted, I find a solution that worked for me I hope works for you
in your pc go to:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync
then find WCESMgr.exe right click in the mouse and doble click run as
then type your login and you should be able to get back your sync
hope it work sfor you
try this... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=349997
I noticed that on Windows XP you have to uncheck the Enable advanced network functionality. If this does not resolve your problem Try plugging your phone into a different usb port on your computer. If this resolves your issue, You should consider deleting the phone from Device Manager. When you plug it in again it will reinstall the drivers and work.
On vista I have not experienced these issues. You can leave the Advanced network func checked.
Hope this helps,

yo I did this on my mogul and my computer recognized it but as a hardware. IT said something like this:"htcusbplug" i installed it but it still doesnt open up activesync.
@ artenis: im having the exact same problem...wont recognize the device at all, even though it charges fine...(im running alex's wm6.1 beta 2 rom...could wm6.1 have something to do with it?)
i had the exact same issue with my sprint mogul, tired everything, formatted my laptop, reinstalled activesync, hard and soft reset the phone, tried other usb/computers, nothing. luckily i have sprints EPP and just took it to the store for a swap for a new mogul, got a new box and everything.. good luck
Same problem with Vista Ultimate 64bit
I had the same issue with my desktop, but after trying everything I could think of, decided to give Microsoft a try.
The drivers included in the pre-installed version of Windows Mobile Device Center would not allow the computer to recognize the Mogul, so I simply reinstalled the application from here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/devicecenter.mspx
Everything works fine now.

Activesync 4.5 Problem: won't connect to my device anymore

so i thought i'd give vista's "windows mobile device center" a try on my vista laptop, and wasn't surprised to find that i couldn't get it to recognize my phone. i was surprised to find that the xp computer that i've been using with activesync for a long time suddenly stopped recognizing my phone as well.
up to now i've hard reset phone (dcd 3.04, 3.37 radio) and reinstalled activesync 4.5. no dice. please if anyone can help me troubleshoot this thing i'd be way grateful. why has my phone stopped communicating with my computers?
For WM 6 devices, on Vista you must upgrade to Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1.
i downloaded and used 6.1 on my vista machine, but it didn't work. any other ideas? i think there may be something that changed on the phone, because now, activesync won't work either...
...bytheway, the phone will charge when plugged into either, but that's about it.

Just for ****s and giggles, have you tried the following:
1. Using a different usb port
2. Blowing the dust out of the port on the phone
3. Using the Y adapter that came with the phone in between the sync cable and the phone
First, plug into the USB, wait for the Windows new device chime, see if anything occurs in the WM Activesync.. If no Activesync connection is made (after the 'connecting' has stopped) then unplug and plug in back in another USB port. Do that at least 4 times (cycling between ports...even the same may eventually work) to see if you have a success.
Restart your PC, Soft-rest your phone and try again.
If still nothing, then don't bother plugging your phone in and then Run As An Administrator the attached batch file and then under View 'Show Hidden Devices.' You'll now see all devices that have ever been installed and retained for your OS, with the faded devices as those not currently attached/active.
Rather than the batch file you can open up a Command Promp Window with Administrator access (Start\Programs\Accessories\Right Click on Command Prompt and Run As An Administrator)
(I usually keep that batch file accessible in the root of my OS partition, just to keep it easy to clean out legacy device drivers that can cause problems.[/i])
Enter:
set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
start devmgmt.msc
Uninstall
Network adapters\Microsoft Windows Remote Adapter
Portable Devices\PocketPC
Then under Programs & Settings uninstall the Windows Mobile Device Center upgrade, and then reboot your PC. Reinstal that Device Center 6.1 update and then again connect your phone with the USB. (for the XP machine you can do all of the and unistall/reboot/reinstall the ActiveSync 4.5.
(note to self or another.....these steps to be added to the Wiki for ActiveSyn issues)
well, i'm thinking that the "****s and giggles" have it. i blew into the port, plugged her in, and it connected to my xp machine, just like days of old. after about 3 minutes though, the connection dropped, and i've not been able to get it going again since. i think this rules out any software/settings problem, and looks like it's a hardware issue. i'll try cleaning it one more time a little later, and if no go, i'll have to figure a way to re-flash the stock rom (i only have a 6gb card...) and send the beast back. thanx for the input, guys (specially keystone, dang man that was one badass post with some instructions that will help someone, i'm sure.)
Do you have the Y adapter that came with the phone? The one with the audio jack and the 5 pin mini usb on one end and the 11 pin mini usb on the other? The reason I ask is because for some reason HTC decided to put an 11 pin mini usb connector on our phones, yet supply us with a data cable that's standard 5 pin mini usb. If you have it, just humor me and try it and see if it keeps the connection.
Oh and P.S....the "****s and giggles" wasn't just a shot in the dark. I've solved many activesync problems for people before using all 3.
I actually hadn't used the cord without the Y-adapter untill today. both ways yeild the same result.
Another Activesync problem
I've been on vacation the last week and while away i had to do a clear storage..anyway, my phone was fine but when i connect thru activesync i get an error code : 85010014 and my contacts list doesnt get updated...:S can anyone out there give me some advice or do i hafto start from scratch?
Also is there a way to find my contacts on my comp?

so i thought i'd give vista's "windows mobile device center" a try on my vista laptop, and wasn't surprised to find that i couldn't get it to recognize my phone. i was surprised to find that the xp computer that i've been using with activesync for a long time suddenly stopped recognizing my phone as well.
up to now i've hard reset phone (dcd 3.04, 3.37 radio) and reinstalled activesync 4.5. no dice. please if anyone can help me troubleshoot this thing i'd be way grateful. why has my phone stopped communicating with my computers?

Well the hoop jumping is fun and all but I think if you uncheck the "Enabe advanced network functionality" in Start > Settings > Connection > USB to PC it may help.
Damn! That was simple. I unchecked the "Enabe advanced network functionality" box and I'm up and running! I'll save the hoops for later. Thanks!

Hi, thanks that work for me fine too
my mogul has been giving me crap with vista and xp for weeks. Nothing can solve it. I've re-flashed, downgraded, used different ports, different cables, modified the USB to PC settings.
Add this to the list of things that randomly seem to be a problem for this phone.
I had a similar situation, none of the software based suggestions fixed it. Wiggling the cord around would sometimes connect, but soon thereafter, my phone stopped charging. The USB port was the culprit, so be careful.
I'm sure everyone who was having troubles figured out solutions, just thought I'd add in my dealings with this.
I just had the phone activated today (yes I bought used) and brought it to work to sync with my work outlook, well the usb cord would charge the phone but give me nothing but errors in the way of actual data connection. I was a little bummed this afternoon thinking I bought a partially broken phone. But WHILE HAVING THE PHONE CONNECTED ( I bold because I had done this multiple times while not connected and had no results) I opened the Comm Manager and clicked on the sync button at the bottom, suddenly my computer could recognize my device and I was sync'ing like a mad man.
Very possibly a stupid thing I should have done from the start, but I don't know any better since I'm brand new to all of this. I only post in hopes of helping another bummed out soul as was myself
I an running a HTC TyTN-II 4550 phone (WinMo 6.1) on a desktop PC (WinXP).
I couldn't get Activesync 4.5 to work either, but there were obvious reasons--my version of Office 2000 isn't supported (2003 is the earliest, I think) and IE and Outlook are not set as my default mail clients (-and that's how I like it-).
I didn't really need Activesync but I did want to be able to get files on and off the phone from my desktop PC through the USB cable. When I'd connect the phone, Activesync would automatically start up and spin the little logo for a while and then say "connection couldn't be made" and then I couldn't do anything--even move files on and off the phone.
What I found works is this:
1) open the Task Manager, and kill the wcescomm.exe process.
2) navigate to the folder that Activesync is installed in, and run the file named WCESMgr.exe.
3) that will popup a window, asking if you want to sync, or cancel. Press [cancel]
4) the normal Activesync window will come up, and the choices for "Sync" and "Schedule" will be greyed out, but the "Explore" button should work.
Sometimes I can disconnect and reconnect the phone without going through steps #1-#4, but not always.
With the "Explore" window you can drag files on and off the device.
I tried dragging small Word and Excel docs on and off; both converted properly when dragged onto the phone, but only the Word file would convert again when dragged off.
The phone will access the internet through the USB when hooked up this way, also.
