Is there anyway of turning the Blue angel off properly.
I.e: When holding the power button a notice comes up asking if your sure you want to shut down.
A bit like on the MDA Vario?
no way
there is no way to really shut down the device. however, if you still wanted to really save your battery, just simply turn off the radio and turn of the device..
That is because BA was designed to work with WM2003 which doesn't use persistent storage and turning it fully off is the same like doing hard reset (you can still do that by taking out battery - backup battery will then drain in 30 minutes).

Soft reboots about 1 time per half hour now. Seems to have a hard time coming back to life after shutting down--flickering screen also the orange charge light goes off. Just happened again. This sucks.
Could be related to the charging function??
Did you installed any suspicious software lateley?
Have you tried a hard-reset? (do a backup first)
Now its hard rebootng by itself.
Its hard rebooting byitself now.
No new software. Looks like a trip to the shop where i bought it for service.
Pressing the power switch does a hard boot now.
Checking now the reset button--could be jammed.
On about the 10th hard reset--every time it completes installing and thenas soon as i press the on/off button it goes haywire
-or even before presing the buttton.
i have a similar problem, but i turned out to be that:
one my battery is dead, i cant recharge (charger at home)
i plug an external charger that uses 4 AA batteries...
it works fine, BUT when those 4 start to die, the xda
keep softreseting, somtimes even b4 it fully get booted.
so... check your main battery, maybe its dying on you!
Interesting!!
Took the unit to the shop today--they played around and at one point insisted that it was my sim card that was causing the problem.
Finally could see that the secondary battery had gone to 0% and was not recharging.
So in had to leave it there for extended service. Had to buy another mobile phone to use as a backup--bought the smallest thing i could find as I will use it at times i dont want to lug around the xda.
...you know, that could be true too, there is a small switch by the sim card, that if not pressed firmly, it resets the device.
a common problem if you remove the sim card often.
The battery says its 100%. But everytime i take the battery out for 5 sec and put it back in again and turn on the pda, it is as if it has resetted and the stuff comes as if im putting it on for the first time (ie. the tap the screen and application stuff installs come) and everything is wiped off.
Looks like your battery is dead. Go back to your supplier and have it replaced
You mean the backup battery is dead?
i have the same problem
and i chang the backup battery
and update jame
and it's same whin u remove battery for 5 sec the phone do a hard rest
how can i solve this
plz helppppp
On Himalaya this ocurs too, but ONLY when the Phone was on (ie not in flight mode) when you take out the battery.
Remedy: Put phone in flight mode before taking out battery!
Maybe that also works with the Magician
But, every time you open the cover for the main battery, you switch off the device! There is a switch. Putting it bach into your MDA, you switch it on. Just this way...
Exactly, you switch OFF the device when the Phone is ON.
The are three ways to switch something OFF:
1. Go into Flight mode: Switches off the Radio functionality (including the Phone)
2. Switch off the PDA: Use the power-button, Radio Functionality remains active
3. Take out battery: All off!
When you take out the battery, the Phone (ie the Radio) has to be OFF to avoid a hard-reset.
When you take out the battery when the Phone is OFF, you only get a soft-reset
With my previous Xda II, I have the same problem too. But I think it's the small switch that cause the hard reset. When removing the battery we have to slide down the switch. After taking up the battery don't ever try to slide up the switch with the battery not in the place. Only when the battery is in its place then you should slide down the switch to lock the battery.

I tried turning on the flight mode before taking out the battery.. but the magician still resets!..
Any other suggestions?
With the Jam/mini, you NEED to flick the soft red plastic "Battery lock" out of its slot on the right hand side, or you will run the risk of a hard reset. You don't pull it right off, just flick it away from its "Locked" position. Not sure why a proper switch could not have been built in on the left hand side.

The red rubber is not connected to any kind of circuit.. it is there jsut to keep the battery tight.. anyways i tried it.. and my mini still hard resets..
Thanks for the input tho.
i have the same problem too... hard reset everytime i take the battery out even only 5 secs. i did turn the flight mode on, then press the power button. its not help. still hard reset. do you think the backup battery is dead?? how to check this? because its always show 100%.. please help.
hi all... for who has the same problem like mine (take out batery then got hard reset instead of softreset), the solution is: SENT IT BACK FOR REPAIR TO THE SERVICE CENTRE.
also, dont forget to write: " please change my RF/MAIN BOARD" otherwise, they will change ur backup battery only, and this wont solve the problem.
i got mine fixed, and i get new IMEI number as a result. first, they replace the backup battery only, and WITHOUT CHECK it, send the phone back to me. im shocked to find that it still had the same problem. made a serious complaint and send it back, this time the manager take care of my phone directly.. hehhehehe.... well, thats the story... thx for all of u that read n give comments about this problem.
hi
my htc touch hd has been a bit jittery for the past week. occasionally just turning itself off or having various hangups.
I have the Stock ROM on it and have not tried to do anything extra to it.
Problem is now it has gone off completely and won't come back on. Took the battery out for 15 minutes and it started briefly and went off again after the very first smart mobility screen.
any ideas?
hard reset if i can get it started or is it a more serious issue?
don
Sounds like you need a new battery.
Hi there,
i agree with stuntdouble, sounds like a hardware (battery) issue. Is your phone still under warranty? If so, HTC could maybe send you a replacement battery?
To diagnose whether it is a battery issue or not, please try the following if possible:
(1) Charge the battery to 100%.
(2) Disable from running or uninstall any 3rd party applications.
(3) Disable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi,
(4) Enable flight mode
(5) Set backlight to maximum settings.
(6) In the power management settings, uncheck any option that would set the backlight to turn off.
(7) Let phone stay idle for 1 hour and check battery capacity.
(8) If there is a loss of 40% or more, then this means that battery is faulty and needs to be replaced.
Best of luck.
My 2 cents
This should help identify if it's a battery OR hardware OR software issue
* Is your battery completely charging? (i.e the light in your power button should be green when fully charged)
* Can you access the Bootloader? If you can, will it stay there and drain the battery?
* Have you tried a complete Battery Charge Cycle?
Battery Charge Cycle (As I do it)
* Turn the device off
* Attach to charger / USB cable and charge the device until the light in the power button goes GREEN
* Remove SD Card and enter the Bootloader
* Leave the system powered on in the Bootloader running from BATTERY ONLY - the device usually does NOT charge from an external source while in Bootloader - Either way, just to be safe, disconnect all external power sources
I use the cycle every once in a while on ALL my electronic devices to ensure their batteries are being completely charged and completely discharged. It is my PERSONAL OPINION that ALL batteries suffer from a "battery memory". Google it.
(8) If there is a loss of 40% or more, then this means that battery is faulty and needs to be replaced.

- This is a good method of testing, however it seems the OP can't get the device to stay on at all, which is why I suggested using the bootloader. So no offence intended by posting similar steps. (I'm not a fan of cutting another man's grass LOL)
Ive been having the same problem as well.
The phone would randomly freeze or even shut off by itself and the only way to restart it would be to take out the battery and put it back in. Sometimes, it gets stuck on the "Smart Mobility" bootup screen and I have to take out the battery multiple times for it to actually boot up to the home screen.
It's been a bit finicky with the charger too. I would leave it charging for a bit and come back to find the phone either frozen or shut off completely.
I'm not sure if I'd be able to test if it were the battery if my phone gets moody and decides to shut off. How do you enter the bootloader?

(mine was not battery issue). The problem is corrupt file system on internal storage or memory card. After fixing the file system, I dont have this problem anymore.
how did you fix the file system? Would a hard reset fix the problem?
Take out memory card and do HR.
It should bring device to original HTC state... so yes, it should fix it.
In the meantime, you can check memory card on some PC...
Hey Everyone,
Just recently encountered this problem with my old DVP. When turn on or plugged in the screen appears on (at night it looks like its powered) but nothing comes on the screen and the keyboard lights up (and remains lit). I cannot turn the phone off from this state without removing the battery. I had assumed the phone to have a dead battery at first but it's not clear that it does have a charge since the keyboard will stay lit forever.
I have tried to leave the phone charging over night, didn't fix anything... I have also tried leaving the phone unplugged with the battery out for a time to see if it needed a power cycle of sorts... Didn't work.
I see a bunch of people with the "not turning on" problem but this is different since the keyboard turns on and I've tried charging it for a long time. I also tried one person's suggestion of holding the power button until the keyboard turns off briefly then release and press power again to get it to restart. When doing that, I can't even get the keyboard to turn off briefly, could hold the power button for 2 minutes and it still won't turn the keyboard off. I can get the screws out of the phone to take it apart if need be (I did the memory card upgrade so my warranty is already void)...
Any suggestions?
Thanks a lot!

1) My phone shuts down.
2) Everytime I turn it ON, it vibrates and it turn off again.
3) And when I turn it on, nothing happened.
4) I need to remove my battery first and then put it back.
5) After i put the battery back, it just vibrate and then shuts down.
Is this a battery problem or ROM problem? Im using Goldeneye ROM.
Right now my phone is working fine, i dont know what triggers the shutting down.
Thanks in advance.
It's your power button. I'ts a common problem. It either stuck or damaged. Try to wiggle it lose or replace it. The parts costs around 2 dollar.
Try a different battery.
But it's most probably the power button. A friend's S4 had the exact same issue. After replacing the power button everything worked fine.
For 5 dollars you can buy a set of 4 buttons. But it does require some technical knowledge. You can also take it to be repaired by a professional, but it is a lot more expensive.
But before doing any of that, try the battery first. You don't want to have your button repaired when it's actually your battery that's defective.
