DivX and Xvid question

Quick question for you all
I am thinking of buying an XDA2i, now I know there are a number of divx players available - I was currently looking at TCPMP. Now can you copy a file straight from your pc that is already encoded in DivX or Xvid straight to the XDA or does it need to be re-encoded (for example a family guy episode).

My cousin has bought his, he installed TCPMP and tried to play a movie and its not working properly - the sound is fine but it just cannot process the picture - it just constantly jumps huge amounts of frames...

Can someone try this out for me - I hope its just the video incorrectly encoded

Use BetaPlayer, it's free and plays loads of formats including avi which DVDx creates using xVID/DIVx.

TCPMP works well, as long as the video bitrate's below, lets say, 500 kbps.
I made some experiments:
XDA II / Himalaya, using TCPMP 0.66
Video Clip: Naruto episode 01, unmodified ANBU sub
specs: 187 MB, 640 x 480, div5 Video @ approx 700 Mbs, mp3 Audio @ 192 MBPS
Win2003SE: Plays well, with the usual chunkiness at high-bitrate scenes (ie, the part where two guys are running after Naruto).
Win2005: Reaallly chunky. even the 1st part with the multiple-tailed wolf. had to Overclock using Hackmaster 2005 to 533 mhz so i could get speed on par with i got in 2003SE. Settled with this setup, since i got to keep win2005.
Alternatives:
Disable audio (yup, this works!!!) more cpu time would be dedicated to video processing
Re-encode the video to lower bitrates. (a friend tried re-encoding the file to 220+ kbps, at 320x 240. it works VERY well, and if you want, you can even convert em to wmvs. problem is, i'm too damn lazy to do that with all files; i mean, even with eovideo or any batch encoding tool, you still have to wait. Patience is not my virtue.)

Beta player is best.. plays most of the formats ... and its free..
use pocket divx for encoding the videos.. so a 700 megs file is reduced to around 180 megs...

I find that films straight off your favourite p2p work fine without any recoding in Betaplayer, most of the time. I have to write a subtitle player sometime...have to watch Kung fu hustle!

Convert DVD to PPC

Hi everyone,
I am looking for a program (freeware or not, as long as it works) that will allow me to easily convert a movie on a DVD to a Divx file that can be palyed on my ppc. I already have several programs, but not all of them do all that I want:
- be able to choose which titles to convert (main title for movies or single episodes for tv series)
- be able to choose the language
- be able to choose the subtitles
- optimised output for ppc
- fast
The program I am using now (xilisoft dvd to pocket pc) let me choose titles and subtitles, but is very slow (I have an Athlon 2500+ 1GB RAN HD 7200rpm 15X ripping speed, and for 1h of movie it takes at least 2h) and the resulting file is quite big and plays sluggiesh. So I have to use pocket divx encoder to further shrink the file. At the end way too long.
Could someone pls help?

I use xilisoft professional - chose Divx, change my settings accordingly and end up with 2 hour movies averaging about 330 MB if I use the following.
320x240
400Kbps video
64 Kbps Audio.
Using tcpmp they play great and look pretty good as well. I think I could even drop the Audio down to 48 and bump Video to 450 and still get good sizes and playback.
Not sure what you are doing but I suspect you are not setting up for pocketpc size etc.
As to your other issues. My version lets me chose which chapters I want or which VOB so I sim-ply chose the main one. It also lets me pick language and angle and subtitle. Perhaps you need a newer version. Convert times are about 1 hour for a 2 hour movie - no so bad in my opinion given whats taking place in the background. Also make sure you have your divx codec upgraded etc

what video format is best? (quality+speed)

Use the default WMP! You need to set up a synchronization with pc and in advance setting of Sync setup, choose a format of some kbps that suggests the video size to be approximately 60MB/hr. Further every video gets reduced in size and optimized for pocket pc when transfered through syncronization!

you might want to look at tcpmp, which can play most file "out-of-the-box" - that is no conversion needed. It may have an impact on battery performance, so it might be an good idea to use pocket divx to convert into 320 x 240 video.

i normally watch avi using tcpmp.. speed wise i am not sure.. but the quality is quite good..

I use Divx pro to convert my stuff to .divx then use TCMP to play em.
@ 320x240 and a bitrate of over 500kbs? quality is VERY good, provided the source had a higher res and bit rate.
I do get some frames skipped at the start(my mem card and tcmp buffering data), but apart from that, it runs at max frame rate.

which video encoder

Hi I'm thinking of encoding video to playback on the Tytn, can someone please recommend a software that will keep the movie size small while maintaining quality.

i've always found best results with avi format. TCPMP is available for free for the tytn but does have a playback issue which is very simply worked around.
As for software for converting your videos, I use CarryDVD (not free) for converting my dvd's - I found converting a DVD movie to a 250-300MB avi gives excellent results. For converting non-dvd video files, eg. larger avi files, I use the free version of Lathe - PocketDivX Encoder with Xvid and 2 pass encoding checked.

Ive used AutoGK, it encodes from several sources (including VOB files from DVDs) into Xvid or DivX.
I personally encode into .avi using Xvid (it does a 2pass Mpeg-4 Xvid encoding to .avi) and audio is encoded in MP3 at 128kbit VBR. And i set it to encode into 320x240.
Using Coreplayer (or TCPMP) it plays back FLAWLESSLY.
For example ive encoded an episode of the simpsons (22mins) from DVD into a 60Mb avi file and its just perfect playback on the TyTN. The performance TCPMP/Coreplayer seems to depend somewhat on the ROM you are using.
An excellent guide for using AutoGK alongside DVD Decrypter (both freeware) is found HERE on doom9.org. Using my analogy the filesize you set in AutoGK can be found using 5.45*minutes.
Use half that if you are encoding a low detail picture such as a cartoon (as i did with the simpsons). So for example a 30 minute video of a properly filmed source (ie friends, or cheers etc..) would use a filesize of 163.5Mb.

Thanks Guest69, i've downloaded the trial version of CarryDVD, if I like it i'll buy the software.

Not free, but I am using CloneDVDmobile from slysoft. $39, iirc, though I got the suite (ripping and decoding as well) a while back when it was on sale. Yes, there are free versions that do much of the same, but quite honestly I got tired of going multiple places to get updates. Seems to work well for encoding.
Just figured out that you have to choose the Raw Framebuffer option and NOT the ATI Imageon (in the TCPMP Video Options) in order to get normal playback on the hermes. I've got a recode of Madagascar that looks great at 300MB for the 80(?) minute movie at 320x(whatever the 16:9AR works out to). There are some tearing-like transition artifiacts, and minor artifacting if I keep my eyes within about 10" of the screen (which is as close as my old-fart eyes can focus).

I started off using the guide, but like to have as much control as possible so now I don't. Obviously depends on the codecs you install, but I like it.
Possibly not the simplest one-stop method.

Try Super. Completely FREE and converts between nearly every file format imaginable. You do need to play with the settings to get good results though. Try 300-400KBps to start with and increase / decrease based on performance, and remember to use single channel and fairly low quality sound to keep the file as small as possible (unless you have decent earphones (and an adapter ))

Super is good but doesn't not give you a 2-pass encode option. Try something like PocketDivxEncoder which has the 2-pass option for encoding to Xvid. It's also very easy to set up and fast.
I actually use WinMEnc. not as polished or professional as PocketDivXEncoder but will convert from DVD or .avi file and is excellent quality plus the second pass is twice as fast as PocketDivxEncoder. (Both are based around Mencoder). For years I did it manually using VDub Mod and even Auto GK.

Another vote for Super. Excellent program for converting any format into any format.
And completely free.

I've got CloneDVDmobile as well. I've used the full CLoneDVD for years with great success. The default for DVD encoding on CloneDVDmobile is set at a quality level of 23 or about 556 meg for a 2 hour movie. What quality level are you finding works best for the Hermes and DVD encoding to get as small an AVI file as possible without making the video un-watchable?

I try to keep my avi files to around 300mb per movie. This seems to keep a sharp picture even with action scenes.

Playing video formats?

The Blackstone is the first smart/windows mobile phone i have had so after recieving my phone i tried some of my video files but (as i expected) windows media wudn't play them, i have seen on other threads that alot of people mention Core Player 1.2.5 and wondered if anyone could give answer me a few quick questions:
1. Does Core Player play most formats (im trying to play x264.mp4 and dixv .avi)
2. Where can i find Core Player?
3. is it a free program? if not how much is it in GBP?

I had this problem - Core Player 1.2.5 plays all files perfectly on the HD - commuting will never be the same again...

Coreplayer 2,5 works perfectly.The PocketPc version the smartphone one is for devices without touchscreen.
Its a commercial software.
Ideal is to use the Qtv display as video output.
I tried different encoded format and the best result is encode the avi files with following attributes:
dimension 640*480
Bitrate between 700 and 750
Framerate 25fps
Audio MP3
Stereo 128kps
Frecuency 44100 Hz.
You can use a higher bitrate till 1200 , but the video doen't play always very smootly then

I tried a couple widescreen (960x540) files in different formats (wmv, mov, avi) with coreplayer 2.5, and none of them would play anywhere near smoothly. the mov played with about 1.5 fps, the wmv with about 5 fps und the avi with something like 7 fps. do any of the numerous settings in coreplayer need to be changed or is the device simply not powerful enough for full native resolution video playback?

just tried some more videos, this time a 1 MBit/s 480x270 wmv file, and even that couldn't be played in any useful way:
played frames: 85
dropped: 447
did you change anything in the core player settings to achieve proper playback?

Firstly, the issue with the video files comes from the fact that they're larger than the resolution of the screen. (your video=960x540, HD=800x460) This means that as well as decoding and playing the video, it also has to scale the video down to it's resolution. This is why it's stuttering. Full native resolution video playback is 800x640 which, incidentally, is the native resolution of DVDs, so if DVD rips have been encoded properly, should not need resizing or re-encoding to play on the HD. (feel free to be skeptical of this, I don't own a HD yet so can't confirm this)
The 1Mbps file possibly wasn't playing properly for that exact reason, it was 1Mbps. As BerreZ states, the highest bitrate to get good playback is 750Kbp

I'm waiting for funds to clear so i can finally order one of these bad boys. I'm not too demanding when it comes to video playback on the phone. 700KBPS is the standard encoding of dvd rips isn't it? like, your traditional torrent movie file.So it looks like we can play them on the HD then using coreplayer? I'm not to concerned about HD quality playback and i've been using an XDA2i for 5 years, mainly for clips and such when bored at the bus station .
Maybe with a higher capacity card I might throw a movie or two on there

a)Native DVD resolution is not 800x640
b)700Kbps is not the "Standard Encoding" for DVD rips.
bitrate will depend on the size of the encode, the length of the movie.

Is there a decent free avi/media player?

One time, I got a cab, but lost it, with some codecs to play divx and other on the Media player. Does anyone knows something like that??

I just purchased CorePlayer. It gave me v1.3.6 not 2.5. Anyway I have tried a divx and avi film. With both I just saw a green haze for a bit and I needed to soft reset the device to recover.
I downloaded the cab not exe and installed it directly onto the device. My films are on storage.
I get a "Copy & Convert" dialogue box with "Convertion (None)" and it seems to do nothing for a while but it does seem to copy the file across ok. What that means is I can see it in explorer. That said it seems to take several runs at it and the bars never go beyond three or so.
Have I just got the wrong resolution?
Any ideas?
