I have several question about Microsoft Direct Push, I greatly appreciate if anyone can answer these questions:
I just setup a direct push through my company's exchange server. Everything works fine but I don't get it:
1. I set my Activesync to sync "As items arrive". Then GRPS will start and start sync'ing with exchange but it will stay on and won't disconnect. Is this normal? GPRS is very expensive in my country, I can't afford to have it on all the time.
2. If I disconnect GPRS and close Activesync, when I reopen it, the configuration of Activesync changes from "As items arrive" back to "Manually" > is this normal?
3. If I set it as "Manually" and close the Activesync and disconnect GPRS and try to send an email to myself. It will not push the email like I expected. I have to either go to COMManager and click on "Microsoft Direct Push", which will turn on my GPRS and will make it stay connected to GPRS.
4. If I use WiFi and send an email to myself, I will not get push email. Unless if I go to Activesync and press "SYNC"
5. If I use BT connection to my laptop and start Activesync. It will only sync with server when Activesync sync'ing with computer.
6. Why does Direct Push doesn't work like a Direct Push, it's more like a Direct Pull to me? I always thought that Direct Push meaning that it will connect to GPRS and retrieve an email and disconnect. JUST LIKE MMS.
7. Is there a way to make it a real Direct Push? like it will connect to GPRS only when I'm about to receive an email. Or it will push the email when I'm connected to WiFi?
Thank you for your help. Any comment or any explanation will do. If anyone has a website that explains this, it'll be great also. I have done researches as usual before I post this email but I can't find any answer.

Same problem and same question about direct push.
I bought a tytn with WM5 to Orange (France). With VM5, the synchronisation is ok with usb and GPRS / 3G also : The 3G goes up as soon as the usb is disconnected and falls down as soon as USB is re-connected up.
With USB, the scheduling is about 5 mns. With 3G this is really "As items arrive".
Today I use WM6 (schap' s 3.54b) with ROM radio 1.51.00.10. The difference with WM5 is the following: 3G / GPRS with pushmail is ok, but when I connect up the usb, the 3G connection remains active, but I think that it is not used by activesync. I'm not sure.
I think that the directpush works only with the 3G, never with wifi, bluetooth or usb.
However, I do not know what has an influence on connection. Is this WM6, the version of protocol or the version of ROM radio? I have not found any doc yet.
If you have any suggestion...

Yes, I read from somewhere that push mail will not work over WiFi or USB. When you are using WiFi or USB, you must click SYNC manually to sync with exchange. It will not push the mail.
I hate that fact that the GPRS won't disconnect after getting an email. MMS works that why, why can't push mail be that way?
GPRS is very expensive in Singapore. I wouldn't use it for Push Mail. I just have to make sure that it's doing it manually not "AS ITEMS ARRIVE". That will hurt my pocket and kill me slowly with bills.

Push mail is when the server send a signal to your device so the latest can sync an retrieve any new event signaled. What it means is your device must be reachable from the outside world : your device NEEDS an IP address.
So yes, GPRS (EGDE, 3G, whatever...) needs to be activated all the time, or else the server won't know how to send a signal to your device.
This is like asking someone to send you some package without giving him the address...
You can replace the GPRS with a Wifi link, btw it would need to be always on, and I mean real ON, not the device falling a sleep. The PDA would run out of power in less than 2 hours.
Via Activesync ? Good try. Unfortunally although the device has an IP address, this one is not reachable outside from the computer. Only Activesync classical synchronisation can do the job.

For blackberry, you need a gateway to format all messages from exchange to cell phone.

I have just updated my wizard to the newest Qtek-ROM (186504-ruu_9100_2170702_21707102_20710_qtek_wwe_ship.exe) with AKU2/MSFP and DirectPush. Everything works fine when I am using a cellular-line.
As soon as I change to a Wifi the ActiveSync tells me the error 85020013: "Your current sync schedule requires a cellular data connection. Please set up a cellular data connection as described in online Help or change the sync schedule." Whats that :evil:? Is there a way to setup DirectPush with a Wifi-connection?
As far as I know Directpush works only with GPRS not via Wifi.
If you disable directpush in your active sync it can connect via WIFI and your error will be gone.
It will sync by wifi even if directpush is enabled but this error will come back every time it sync's according to its schedule.
But your device has to be switched on for this.

I had the same question for days.....
Every peace of information you read about microsoft Direct Push says it's possible to sync using gprs AND wifi.
But.... as soon as direct push is enabled and only wifi is available the dreaded error appears.
It doesn't make sense..... wifi is, just as gprs is, a normal IP connection which supports the heartbeat signal en HTTPs notification.
Perhaps someone could clarify this matter

Possibliity one:
Its got something to do with the legal IP address associated with the Wizard. This address is crucial to the "always on" connection since there's an IP socket associated with it for port 443 (or 80 if you don't use HTTPS) on the FrontEnd Exchange server. If the IP changes, then the connection is dropped and has to be re-established. That in itself is no big deal, but I believe that there is no mechanism in place to notify Direct Push on the Wizard that this has happened.
(more likely) Possiblity two:
There must be some low-level tie to the Direct push app from the GPRS connection that allows it to function when the device is in standby mode. Have you ever noticed that your WiFi connection is dropped when you place your wizard into standby mode by pressing the power button?
Yep.... i've noticed the WIFI standy but it still would be nice te recieve pushed mails as soon as i start using the wizard.
All this without having to do the manual operations.
Perhaps something for the future.................
@Sleuth255: I am convinced that possibility two is the right one.
Wifi takes a lot of power (at least with my wizard it seems so) and so they don't let it on when the device is in standby (you are right). Switching off GPRS or GSM wouldn't be so clever for a phone so this is probably the reason for making DirectPush only work with a cellular connection.
Ok I set up a POP email account on the phone using one of my isp email accounts. At first everything was fine, I can send and receive mail without a problem. I noticed it stoped sending mail all of a sudden. I thought it was a program I installed on the phone, but I was not sure. Today I plugged my phone into my PC and the email message I had in the outbox was sent. I disconnected the phone from the computer and I tried to send another email it would not send.
Why would the phone send the e-mail when I am connected to the computer, but when I disconnect it will not send it. Is it using my internet connection from the computer when it is synced?? I am lost I hope someone can lead me in the right direction.

Yes it can and does use your internet connection whilst synced to the pc, you can browse the internet this way. Question is why it stopped while not connected, have you checked your gprs settings, can you browse internet via gprs, edge or whatever you use?

I can still connect to the internet when I'm not connected to my PC. Do you think it changed something in the phone, the first time I connected through my pc? The question is what. I have to completely wipe out the phone in oreder to get this to work again. Like reflash the rom again. It may be something simple, but I am still at a loss.
I figured out why this is happening. My isp does not support authentication, so I can not check my mail out of the network via pop set up. Once I hooked my phone up to my pc I was connectiong through pc to my isp and the emails were being sent. :roll:
I've set up mail2web account and configured activesync on my mobile with mail2web settings for push mail.
I've been unable to get any mail "Pushed" to my device that way when I'm connect with WIFI. I have to go to acivesync on mobile and click on "Sync" and only then do the emails get downloaded to the device.
I've been searching through the archive and I actually found people saying you cannot use Wifi with pushmail. But also found replies of some claim they are getting their mail pushed while being connected only with Wifi and not GPRS.
Keep in mind at this time my device doesn't have GPRS so I have no other choice but to use Wifi. More so, it would seem very idiotic to program pushmail to specifically not work through Wifi. After all why not? Wifi is a lot faster, and if you're at the office or an hotspot somewhere it would seem much more logical to get the mail with Wifi than with slow GPRS. but I wouldn't be surprised if MS didn't think about that.

Or use Blackberry or Goodlink or any other push e-mail solution.
You can also move to the Nokia implementation using ActiveSync for push-email on the E61 and that will work with WiFi :twisted:
I think push email does work on Wifi.
The only thing is that my GPRS connection pops up automaticly. But when I want to send a large email, i need to disconnect GPRS several times in order to send it over Wifi

This irritated me as well, but I've found that if you modify the ActiveSync schedule to sync every 5 minutes instead of "as items arrive" you can connect to Exchange servers over WiFi.
You won't get true push email, but it's still better than nothing
check out the mobile team blog. Push on activesync is hardcoded to use cellular only. nothing you can do will get it to work on wifi.
Hi guys. once more I'm trying to find whats preventing my email account to connect using the wifi connection. It seems as it will only connect through 3g data connection. I've tried everything. the only thing I can think of now is that there's a problem with the wifi modem driver because as you can see in the pic below it wont appear as a modem connection:
can anyone check is they have another option there that I dont?

Well than lets find out whats wrong! Do you have those same options like I have?
I think that people that have a working email client should have another option there for the broadcom etherenet card and I want to compare.
Why are you going so "deep" in the "useless" settings?
Set your network cards to connect to "the internet", not "work", and set the email client to use "the internet"... and everything will work together nicely.

That would mean your 3G connection doesn't work either... but you did say it was working earlier, right?
I'm on WM 6.5 and the screen is different. But in the options I only have 3, Bluetooth is absent.
BUT that screen is not related to wifi at all, so your problem should not be there.
This connection screen is set by the configurator for your country/operator to get the data/mms connection settings. If those work, the problem is somewhere else.
If it helps .... I only have the 3 options you have. BUT I am pretty sure that the screen shot you showed has nothing to do with your ability (or inability in this case) to establish a wifi connection.
I re-set up my Telstra WAP connection and then my Active Sync settings in order to connect to Exchange as it did not connect straight out of the box (gotta love Telstra!) but all is working now that I have selected "The Internet" and have the right Telstra settings ....

I had the same problem last night at home, and quick resolution was to reset the WiFi access point. I know for a fact that it's not the HD2 because occasionally I had the same problem with my old phone (Nokia E60).
However, I too was puzzled by the message you are quoting. If WiFi does not work, the HD2 should fall back on 3G / GPRS / GSM, which in this case it does not.
I'm not sure whether your problem too may be related to the access point. If I were you I would:
a) Turn WiFi off on the HD2 and check that mail works fine;
b) Check that you have set your WiFi connection and your email client on the HD2 as suggested by kilrah earlier (to connect to "the internet", not "work", and set the email client to use "the internet")
c) Turn WiFi on and check that the HD2 does indeed connect properly to the access point (green tick mark next to the SSID). If it doesn't try resetting the access point.
d) If it does, check that email works as expected (which at this point should be the case).

The most "effective" -simplest- solution i was able to find to the problem is to "duplicate" the email account.
The "duplicate" accout was created "while i was connected to the internet via wifi".
Actually this "alternative" account was created - obviously with a different "name" - to be able to clearly identify it and different smpt - to be able to send messages via the adsl provider-.
Now when i want to check the mail via 3g i use one account while when i want to connect via wifi i use the "alternative" account.
This way you may have every now and than the problem of duplicate incoming messages which need to be manually erased but at least don't have to make too elaborate modifications to the settings prior to access the mail.
I have the same problem but the other way arround. I mean that my Gmail account won't sync unless I'm on Wi-fi . Through Gprs it won't work !! I get a "Cannot Connect" message. HELP ME

When I leave home (it disconnects from Wife) and the mobile device stays connected only on GPRS, I do not receive my e-mails instantly. I have to do a manual Sync so send/receive e-mails.
When I'm on GPRS only and i check the server status, I see the following message:

Result:
The server could not be reached. This can be caused by temporary network conditions.

I think You need to have the proxy turned off before adding the exchange server, then everything worked fine.
and if you don't have a choice -as the post arrived- already you will need to delete the current exchange server, make sure the proxy is off, then re-add the exchange server......

just use CWSProxyManagerGroup to administer , you can disable or restore it
