How do you set the screen to go totally black when not in use?
At the battery management (in Settings) area, find the one that will turn off backlight when not used for X seconds/minutes.
I have it set to 10 seconds but it never goes completely black.
Press the power button briefly. This will put the device in sleep mode and give you a totally black screen.
Have you got a thing about black, perchance?

so I will still get texts and calls?
Of course... Lamp will flash orange if you have received SMS or missed call(s)...

Today I had an alarm set, when the alarm went off I tapped hit the power button on the top of my phone to turn the screen off (and hopefully the alarm... but only the screen went off). The alarm continued to go, but no matter what I did, I couldn't get the screen to come back on.
I can fully interact with the phone (as if the screen was on). For example, pressing talk twice redailed my last call. Pressing power prompted to shut the phone off (could hear the "blurp"), etc.
So, after shutting the phone off (or resetting with pinhole reset), the display works fine while it is displaying the "Cingular - Raising the Bar" nonsense. As soon as that screen is done (where it would have normally showed the today screen), the screen just goes off...
Any ideas?

nevermind, when I put it under a bright light I realized the screen was on, the backlight was just off... somehow I must have hit some shortcut to turn the backlight off.

Don't sound too relieved...
Say hello to the Backlight bug.
You're backlight will keep setting itself to the lowest setting after every soft-reset, when you let it go into stand-by itself.
I'm still sufferering from it. It started when i first installed PocketZenphone.
So just want to give u a warning. Everytime you reset your phone, remember not to let it go into standby itself. Either tap the power button and turn the screen off, then turn it on agan. Otherwise, the Backlight will go to low again.
I know this problem has not been resolved yet. However I read that if you boot android when the keypad lcds are off, they will stay off. That is my problem. Im unable to boot android when they are off because they stay on for the duration my screen is lit, in other words, they only turn off when my screen turns dark. To wake the device up I must press the buttons which turns them on again. How did you guys work around this?
the keypad backlight is only on for about 10 seconds...
if this isnt the case you have installed a little tool that it hangs together with the lcd backlight...
my keypad lights don't turn off at all for some weird reason..
also my orange led at the top stays on always..

You should try to look in the startup folder of windows. It might have keypadledcontrol.exe which makes it "keep on" while the display is on. Just remove it from ur startup list and you are done. now the keypad will turnoff after 10 sec (by default - configurable through registry).
I hope it sorts your problem out.
This is driving me nuts! I can finish a phone call, put my phone down on my desk, then look over 5 minutes later and the screen is STILL on. I have to hit the power button to make it sleep, it will go black, then flash the lock screen and then follow the 15 second screen mode I have set and go black then. what gives? Its not rooted, i dont have a lot of crazy apps on it. Anyone know what causes this?
Hey guys, yesterday my note 3 fell off and the battery flew out of the phone. I connected it, tried to reboot but the screen remains black. The phone turns on, the notification led works, the back and menu button lights are on and every once in a while it vibrates when I receive messages, but the screen still black. I tried to open it and see if something happened to the connections inside but everything looks fine to me. What should I do now? Send it to repair? Do you guys think I'll have to replace the display altogether?
Hi,
I've been having screen issues with my phone. First green lines started showing on the screen, I turned auto brightness off, and it fixed the issue. But now when I want to wake my phone, it flashes white, but the screen stays off, and it does this for~3 more clicks, the fourth one turns the screen on though.
I'm on stock by the way. Not rooted.
Figured I'd ask before taking it to Samsung.
