You have to stop the application that has the filelock. Try (on the PPC) closing all running apps and stopping all services. If it's Windows itself that has the lock, then you'll have to extract a ROM image and go from there.

Converting EXE to CAB for Extended ROM Auto-Install?

Hey Guys,
I have been customising my extended rom so when I hard reset I get all the applications I want (Resco file explorer etc). I have been doing this with .cab files fine.
The problem is that I have files which are .exe setup files (e.g Flash player 6). These have to be installed on the PC, and the cab is copied to the XDA and run. I would like to just have e.g a flash CAB file to put on the extended ROM.
is there a way to convert the PC EXE into a XDA cab file, or some way to run the PC exe on the device automatically in extended rom?
I know some .exe setup files can be extracted using winrar which then give you the cab file, flash player isnt one of them though.

Jez.

Use Windows Registry Editor (regedit.exe) to look for the path where your Desktop Exes are extracted to PocketPC Cabs:
Look for this value:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows CE Services]
"InstalledDir"="k:\system\hardware\pda\imate\ASync"
Now, open your Windows Explorer and go to the path. You will find your cabs in corresponding folders (e.g, folder MacromediaFlash shall contain Flash6.arm.cab and etc...)
If you need to do more complex restoration, use Restorator tool. It restores your directory and file structure, registry settings, installs cabs, writes boot screens and does everything nice...
Oh my god, you are both bloody geniouses!!
This is wicked, cheers guys!

Jez.
Any other ways to xtracting & repacking to cab?
Renaming the file format (exe to any formats) & exe xtractor software doesn't work.
I can compress any data to .cab, but how to xtract perfectly exe files?
Convert EXE to Cab online without having to download any software
If you have an EXE file that you would normaly run on your PC to install a sofware... it looks like this online converter work to have it converted into a cab file for your cell phone!!!
try it!
1- first you need to compress your EXE file into a ZIP folder... that will create a ZIP file on your desktop.
2- then you go to http://media-convert.com/convert/
3- browse on the first field to determine witch file on your pc you want to convert .. select the ZIP file you just created...
4- on the second part of the page you will be ask what format you want to convert your ZIP file to .. on the scrolldown menu select . CAB... and hit the convert button .. the online service will do the rest ..
Basicaly will upload your file onto their server , process it and render it to you on a file download link ...
There you go you have now a CAB version of your EXE file to upload on your phone with ActiveSync...
My problem
how to say... the site is cool ,and i get my file converted. However, the nature of that file hasn't been changed into a cab. it is still an exe. I dunno if i have done something wrong when converting.

WM5 copy/move files

I am trying to copy or move a file from \windows which is a .dll file. I am getting an error when trying to do this programatically in C# with .NET. Does anyone know how to access the files in \Windows directory without access restrictions?
Thanks,
heimlich
if they are in the rom one cant just delete or in some cases access them runtime only at pre flashing rom image time
Could you be a bit more detailed? I want to get access to a .dll to see what their function calls are. How can I get the dll onto my desktop to view it?
Thanks,
heimlich
try copying them to your sd card using total commander
I tried that. I get an error telling me it is unable to copy files. Looks similar to error I get when I tried with native file explorer and .net File.Copy();
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
heimlich
If it is in ROM, you can't copy it right out as a file, the best you can do is to LoadLibraryEx it with LOAD_LIBRARY_AS_DATAFILE, then if you can locate it in memory, you can dump it out to a file on disk.
How do I know if something is in ROM? I know it is in \windows and that is about it and in file explorer I can see the file as .dll.
thanks,
heimlich
One way is to use GSFinder. It marks ROM files with a different icon. Most of the files that are in the \Windows folder are in ROM.

How to copy file with 'ROM' attribute? (or how to change that file attribute?)

Hello,
I am trying to copy a file (from my smartphone to SD card), which have a 'ROM' attribute set and... it is impossible - acces denied is showed (even in Resco Explorer, Total Commander). I can't even change that attribute.
Please help me to find any solution
Best greetings,
RA
You should be able to extract files from the ROM file on your PC thanks to the tools provided in one of the sticky about ROMs modifications.
Unfortunatelly...

I have extracted an 'nb' file from my ROM file, but WinImage can't open it ("not FAT16, FAT32 file"). It is WM6 image file, what tools to open this 'nb' file?
Best greetings,
RA
I, too, am trying to find a way to copy some ROM attributed files.
Ultimately, I am trying to move/copy some apps from one smartphone (WM5) to another (WM6). Is there a way to copy them to a zip file and move the files that way or maybe even using a backup copy (i.e. using Sprite Backup?) and restoring to a different phone?
Any help or direction would be appreciated. If there is another thread out there, please be sure to point me to it since searching brings up a lot of different threads.
u need to extract the rom.
Funny, but you make it sound so easy... ;-) I've been searching to figure out how to do that and found some instructions I'm hoping I can follow for the one phone, but not sure it it will apply to the old phone (WM5). If I do manage to dump the ROM, where does it go and does it extract the files in cab format for easy upload?
Update: I found a file extractor at http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/ppc-6700-xv6700/56057-6700-rom-dump.html which may have originally come from Buzz... (thanks Buzz!)? so now I have all the files and modules off the old phone, but am running into some issues installing. I can transfer the files indirectly, and can find the specific application file, but when trying to run the app, it tells me that it's still missing files to enable the program. Any ideas on how to determine which files they might be or how to install the files via Activesync?

really newbie question - install software

hi.. i download a few program for my nike.. all in winzip files.. so how i want to install to my nike? using sync? memory card? tq..
The files inside the zip's should be cabs - extract these, stick them on your SD Card & put back in the phone, browse to the file with File Explorer & just click the file & hopefully it should launch. Some cabs require a reboot after installation so don't be surprised if it asks you to do i
thanks bro.. find some zip file contains exe icon.. but some zip files does't support by winzip.. so cant open it..
.cab - should be open on PPC
.exe - on Desktop (sometimes on PPC)

[unresolved] Copy entire contents of device storage to windows hard drive?

Is it possible? The easy solution would be exploring files from windows mobile device center but i think it's not possible to explore inside \windows from the desktop.
yes it is.
in Windows 7 open explorer, click "organize", then "folder and search options" , click tab View then check "show hidden files and folders " , then uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and there you go !
unplug device and plug it again either in activesync or disc drive mode.
that doesn't work, i got loads of errors "the process cannot access the file because it's being used by another process"
Maybe try to copy to SD Card first and then to your PC.

Yes, try JR_de's method also ! other possibility is to work in the Windows safe mode.Or try some Linux live editions then transfer files.Note that files in \windows folder are marked as "read only" , so you need to uncheck it.And do not copy files on desktop...use new folder in one of your computer partitions.
Did you see what processes are blocking ?
It's not as simple as that since it's the phone stopping the copy no matter what OS you use the phone will not comply, try and copy files even to SD you will get this, just the same as on a PC try deleting something in use "locked file"
Same reason why we use ROM Extractor to take ROM files since you can't just copy.
so i should be able to do it using ROM extractor? can it take all device storage files or is it just for ROM files?

Just single files.
I'm not sure what you trying to do but it may just be easier to dump a ROM, why do you need all files?
