REQUEST; Little app for using flash light - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

Hi,
I want to tell this is my first thread, but anyways.
I have a little request to program land
I see, that i am using my flash light of my camera alot, while i come in some dark places, or i am lots of time behind my PC, wich is under a desk, and most of the time it in the dark, so i grab my phone, need to start Camera, and then set on the flash function.
What is happening there, is that the Camera is on, and sucks my battery.
So i need to do all things quick, and some time's i do it wrong, becuase of the quickness.
What sould it look like.
If you pleased to, i would like the app to switch the flash on and off like CicleBT. But then use it as a button or like on the today screen press the app and show current status of the flash-light, with icons, or just on and off text. I am a bit handy with icons, so if you need small resources of icons, i could help with that, but i am not an programmer at all..
So thats why i requested this.
Greetings all,
Justin..

You can always use...
There are already some apps to use the flashlight
you can try this great app from vijay555 , you can find it here:
http://www.vijay555.com/?Releases:VJCandela
and see if it works for you.
Note: it's stated to work on the Universal...but should work on any htc phone.

Button or Icon for Flashlight

Hi, I apologize if this has been posted before... I was wondering if there is any hack or program that would let me use the flash as a flashlight withouth using the camera or if I could assign one of the buttons for it. Thank you for your time.
if you'd've searched for 'flashlight'
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=41642&start=75
vijay's still working on it off and on, but I don't think he's got anything working for the wizard
This would be a GREAT little hack. That flash is useful as a flashlight when I'm stumbling into bed at night.
oh dear lord!

Application Launcher Applications, do they exist?

Hello!
I am looking for a launcher. I don't want a panel, I don't want a today screen plugin - I want a regular program exe so that I can remap my x-panel button for quick access... Ideally it would be very customizable, look good, use next to no space or ram, cost nothing, and cook me pie. Mmmmm... pie...
Anyway, that is just idealism... bare essentials - I want a screen of icons, shortcuts to programs that I choose. It should be something along the lines of smaberg's action screen, only not using the power button and giving me the choice of what to put on it.
Anything like that out there?
Oh, and on a side note, great forums, really saved my bacon when the phones came with the dreadful Swedish all over them.
i use this :
http://www.fantasticbytes.com/products/launchmanager
not free though but i think there's a pie-making function in there somewhere ...
Hey thanks, that seems to do the trick! No pies though... but other than that, it works great.

App Request : Enable keypad backlight while screen is on

For any devs out there...
Would it or is it possible to develop an app that will keep the backlight on for the keypad ? i.e. On while the screen is on and go off when the screen goes off ?
In the dark its very annoying when using the Hero and having to fumble for the right key to press - Home, Back, Search etc.
i second that
well erm just press any key and the light will go on dude, you dont need an app for this
So you fumble and hit Home or even power off (to sleep) the screen when you only wanted to hit search or back.
Flicking the scroll wheel is the only way to light up the keys and not press the wrong one by mistake, but that tends to highlight a button, link etc... and sometimes if you hit the ball too hard, you select a screen element.
Still a pain and TBH not like any handset I used before. Backlight time out was always linked to screen time out.
You dont need to hit any key, just move the scroll wheel even slightly and lights come up. And it does need decent amount of pressure to press the scroll button, you wont accidentally press it.
er, yer, I know... but I don't want too
lets just say "even if it doesnt make sense to some people, WE want it!"
btw, there is one app "dark keys" that keeps the backlights of the keypads off all the time. this was made for the white G1. maybe it can simply be rewritten to make the reverse happen?

i'm beeing annoyed by the keys not being lit as well ...
Glad I'm not the only one
Yeah, I want it too. Thanks for bringing this up!
I think it's good idea, btw it looks cool at night. I want it too
Good idea. +1
So which dev is gong to earn a couple of $$, ££, €€ by writing this for each copy sold then ??
From what I can tell of the API docs (http://developer.android.com/reference/android/os/PowerManager.html, the SDK only allows for the keyboard backlight to be on in FULL_WAKE_LOCK state, meaning the screen will have to be full brightness.
So I don't think this request can be achieved by a pure SDK app.
How come it lights up at any screen brightness on the Hero ?
Surely its also a hardware call and not just an OS call ? These would be independent of Android and particular to each manufactures handset, else they would all be the same.
Not questioning you, but it would seem strange that its not addressable separately to the screen ???

I'm by no means an Android SDK expert, just posting what I found in a quick search round the docs. Happy to be proven wrong!
Lee
Of course - wasn't criticising at all
Might be able to dabble in the /sys/class/leds/ folder.
I'll take a look when I get in.
Not a dev though. Lol.

Correct.
echoing a value to:
/sys/devices/platform/i2c-adapter/i2c-0/0-0066/leds/button-backlight/brightness
through adb shell turns on the backlight.
I think an SDK app could be created as a service with a broadcast receiver listening for the power state changing that just writes a positive value to the file above.
Loads of similar examples here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=565015
I'll take this on, just about got it working.
Wicked thx
You are stars (especially fullerlee)
Don't make it too expensive though

"flashlight" function - quick question please

Okay I apologise in advance to potential flamers.
I thought it was possible to use the flash as a torch without any extra cab/app but am I correct in assuming that this is not the case as I must source an app to do this? I have search the HD2 forums and all threads seem to discuss apps....
Don't know why I thought I saw this function on the phone when I got it....
Anyway if not is Torchbutton the simplest?
Is using the flash for this preferable to having the screen go bright [is this even possible?]
Thanks
search for "torchbutton". works a treat.
Sure...simple...press the camera button, then hit the flash button twice..LEDs turn on...hit flash button again LEDs turn off!
No apps, hacks, cabs takes all of 2 seconds!
torchbutton is great, i use it every night to navigate the cellar to the top floor, heh, simple instant on/off quicklink on my home screen, job done. (theres another one floating about that takes 5 secs to start, very annoying)
wayyy brighter than using teh screen to navigate, , dont forget how dark most of the screens are on your phone, they just dont cut it.
There is also HTC Flashlight - you can choose between 3 different levels of brightness.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=630297&highlight=Flashlight
...and the 3rd one is really insanely bright

Is there a way to force the flash on the camera

I was taking a few pics against a bright background so of course, i couldnt see the subject. It would have been a cool shot if i could have used a flash but the camera's metering only gave me the option of automatic and off. Is there a mod out there that gives me the option to turn the flash on no matter what?
i have 3 flash options, auto, off and on.
I have to agree with shak7i
when taking a picture, top right hand icon i have the X to close the camera and under the X is the symbol for the flash, off, always on and automatic, i just select always on which is the arrow, and arrow with the A is automatic but you probably know this already!!
rather strange you only have 2 options, I know when the battery is below 20% that it is disabled but that just makes the options grey, and does not limit the options,
I just put my phone to a very bright window and i still had 3 options so not sure how to help you now!!( i thought maybe when its a bright shot that maybe you could not select always on but i could!!
hope you get it sorted!!
Really odd, I press the flash buttons and its either auto off or on
Weird - found it
So i guess i just missed it somehow. I just tested it on myself. Note to self: the flash is SUPER bright, not flash it in your eyes....
Flash ON = Photo light?
Resurrecting the thread...
I'm curious about the Flash ON mode. Is there a way to use the "flash" as a photo light? When taking pictures in very low-light conditions, you can't see anything on the screen! Once I take the picture with flash, I suddenly see improper shots (either a subject is missing or I'm unintentionally focusing on something else).
Bottom line is: Does anyone know how to really force the flash on to use it as a photo light?
P.S. I know about using the flash as a torch and going into the camera, but that's a little low-tech and cumbersome, don't you think?
sorry if i might sound like a newb since this is my first post ever here but i think you can "force flash" by having the flashlight app in the background and then opening your camera, hope that helps

How do you do that? My flashlight app always stops the flashlight when in background.

That's true, with the exception of the camera. Just go into the flashlight app, press the hardware Home button, go into the camera, and the flashlight app will turn on again.

Hey, thanks for replying!
I did that exactly and the moment I go to the main menu, the light stops. BTW I'm on a TMO US HD2 with TMo stock ROM.

No problem.
Yes, it does that, but once you enter the camera, it should turn on again.
If the light will not stay on for you, search the forums for "torchbutton"
I know it works, just tested it ....

Thank you for the suggestion, I will definitely check it out
just want to say that our roms have photo light behaving correctly
you press auto - it only goes off when necessary
you press on - the light goes on and stays on (until you change flash mode or exit the camera)
you press off - it goes off
Does it have to do with drivers?

So is it something to do with the camera drivers? Or can that be achieved by registry tweaks?
Something interesting: In my previous ROM, I was able to use the flashlight app and go into the camera, where the flashlight will turn on as a photo light. In the ROM I flashed last night (the one in my sig), I am unable to do that same thing! That's just weird!
Ive been looking for an answer for this too,
Ive tried several different roms & noticed that that the 'flash always on' option has only worked on stock European & roms without 576mb ram, (the last one i tried was kwbr 2.0 wm6.5),
The TmoUS based roms ive used the flash only activates in low light.
Hope some chefs can shed some light on this on... (sorry!)
If you switch to the video camera, there is an always on option ....
indeed it is driver realted, and not something that can be fixed via a cab either, it has to be cooked in.
all our roms (there are a lot) are 576 + tmous + flash properly always on
