I've found many threads on issues with the back speaker... but not the front
I think I've damaged it by poking a screwdriver into the gap at the top of the face of the phone; between the two LED's. When I take a call it sounds very weird and roboty and crackly.
(I was trying to clean the phone without opening it...but then I had to anyway)
I also seem to have very poor reception since opening the phone; could I have misplaced/unaligned something?
thanks

I suspect you just need to tweak out the front speaker contacts so they more firmly contact the mother board (fairly common problem):
see here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=283490
and curiously your other thread – the springy speaker contacts can be seen in the photo!

Just tried this, it doesn't seem to have worked, I'll try again in a few hours; I'll extend slightly less. Maybe I damaged it, pierced it etc. (the speaker)
What seems to be very worrying also is the poor reception; I'll try other networks and see.
Oh, the Internet Explorer button works now though.
Thank you very much for this.
Would this speaker off ebay do the trick:

That certainly looks like the Motorola one that is reported to work as a replacement. From the picture it looks as though you'd have to bend the contacts around a bit. At least it's fairly cheap - but if you're getting it I'd do it right away - they only have four in stock and many people will see your link here!)
A thought occurs to me though from what you say. If reception is poor, is it not possible that the poor sound quality is due to the poor signal?
Might be as well to check the aerial connection is seating properly:

thank you, I'll give that a go later, the signal probelm was only after I opened the device up due to the speaker problem.
I've just bought the item off ebay and I'll let you know how I get on.
Got speaker this morning; it was damaged-1 pin missing
waiting for reply from seller
Regarding the reception proble, after a decent few days, its got much worse, so mush so call are dropped, the gold pins etc. are ok? should i get a reception booster?
also i have a little rubber button-like thing out of the device, but do not know what its for, i've attached a pretty crap pic (sorry). Its soft rubber, flexible, black, really small-less than half the size of the microSD, from atop it looks rectangular, but there is also a rectangular elevation. from belowm there is a slight indentation, and on the front face there is a slit. any ideas?

Not sure what's up with your GSM radio.
The black part is the microphone cover from bottom end of motherboard.
Mike
cheers, maybe it was a network fault.
fitted the speaker off ebay, wouldn't say its great, but it does the job-maybe its poor quality speaker, maybe its the device, I don't know. The service off the eBay seller was great though; after initially recieving a faulty recieved unit I was quickly sent a replacement at no additional cost.
The poor reception issue was peculiar, it got to a point when at times it said sim card missing; that's when it became obvious. The silver clips which hold the sim card were loose and the sim card able to move easily-tightened them by pushing inward slightly and solved the problem.
Thanks very much for your help Mike.

Hi everyone,
My Hermes does not vibrate anymore, there are two possible reasons as I see it:
1. I dropped my phone on monday, the battery cover came off and the battery fell out, the phone seemed to be fine after I put them back (most likely)
2. I upgraded from radio 1.18 to 1.27 (unlikely)
Those are the only two recent events which have happened to my phone, and as I doubt the radio has anything to do with the vibrator motor I assumed that when I dropped it, the motor broke off its contacts or something.
Things I have tried:
1. Upgrade to AKU 3.3 (previously running SA 1.35)
2. Downgrade radio to 1.18 again (no luck, back on 1.27 now)
3. Hard reset
4. Soft reset
5. BL 1.01, 1.04
6. Various combinations of all of the above
I have come to the conclusion it must be a hardware issue. I've looked at pictures of the inside of the Hermes but nothing is obviously the motor - could anyone point it out to me on an image? I'd like to have a look at it and if it has broken off its contacts, solder it back on, or buy a new one and install it if it is broken.
Also, are there any programs that can test the vibration definitively? It doesn't vibrate when I am rung or texted, even though the setting is to vibrate, and it doesn't vibrate when I toggle vibrate mode from the Comm manager.
Many thanks
unfortunately your not the first to suffer this problem:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=293004
i know that's not really of much help, in terms of fixing the issue. but i think it proves that it is some kind of hardware fault that many of us are experiencing. i've had this problem for a while now, and yeh, its very annoying, but I dont trust t-mobile enough to give it back to them to get it fixed because other than that everything else works fine, and in my experience if i get it repaired its bound to come back with even more problems
Thanks for your reply, I had read that thread but unfortunately for me I bought this phone off eBay (for £245 after O2 wanted £260 to replace my Wizard...) so I have no warrantee.
I am an electronic engineer so I'm not afraid to get inside either, if it is an obvious and easy-to-fix fault (wire needs resoldering or something) I will let everyone know.
Don't suppose anyone can point to a picture showing the motor could they?

The motor is on the back cover and contacts the mother board via spring contacts. It is possible that a sharp knock could flatten these contacts and stop connection to the board. This would be an easy fix - bend contacts back to original position and all you need is to take back cover off!!
Mike
I have fixed it - I opened up the case (just took off the back cover - this voids your warrantee) and it is located at the bottom. It has two spring loaded pins which contact the main board, and one appeared to be bent slightly out of shape. After bending it back I reassembled and everything works again!
Thanks for your reply Mike, I had actually just got back from my mate-with-the-T6-screwdriver's house where I fixed it when I read your post!
Thanks all
A hard knock can bend the Vibrate Motor's copper spring contacts enough to make them lose contact with the board. In other cases contact may be poor due to some oxidisation on the contacts.
For those who are not worried about their warranty, giving those contacts a tweak back into shape would not be a daunting task. 4 screws on the back cover, remove sim card AND Micro Card and with a bit of patience ease off back cover. That's all the dismantling needed .
Do remember to line up the little macro toggle arm on the camera with its catch on the cover when putting back together. First time I did this I forgot, got everything all screwed back and then discovered the camera macro arm was not lined up with the switch on the casing. So i would check the macro switch is working before finally putting screws back in.

Some people are able to get the motor to re-establish contact with the m/board by giving the device a few sharp taps on the bottom edge. This can work provided the spring contacts are not excessively bent. Worth a try especially for those with a warranty for whom opening up would be warranty voiding.
Cheers
Mike
Ahh...so that's why my Dopod838Pro is not vibrating at times...I knew it had something to do with the amount of times I dropped the phone...(lol) well, I will try this solution and get back to you guys.
Thanks for the info Mike.
Hey there,
i've had my jade for about a week and i've come across three issues concerning the casing.
Issue #1: On the bottom of the Touchscreen, under the htc logo, just above the d-pad, there is a small bump which can be seen when looking at the screen's reflections.
Issue #2: The battery cover doesnt fit perfectly, on the left side it's perfectly flush but in the right side it sticks out a very small bit, but you can feel it when holding it in your hand, maybe because of that
Issue #3: When applying gentle pressure on that left side of the battery cover, it creaks. It really doesnt take much, it usually happens when writing sth with both thumbs and it is really annoying and gives the phone a low-quality impression.
I just wanted to ask if someone has come across the same or similar issues here, so i can find out if i got that one in a thousand and get a better one when returning mine...
#1: Not here
#2: Yes, only a very small bit. Doesn't bother me that much.
#3: I never noticed this until I tried it after your post. Doesn't bother me because it never happens when I use it.
I guess it could be worse.
Can someone please reply to my thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=463365 regarding the sound click issue ?
thanks for the answer, i just ordered myself a new one for comparing...
1/ Yes very slightly.
2/ Yes.
3/ No.

it looks worse on the picture than it really is because about half of the width is the camera's reflection...
I only detect issue #1.
About #2,3: The case seem very solid with no substantial gaps.
No bumps or any substantial gaps; the case does indeed creak, but i just noticed it reading your thread and trying it out.
almost perfect
Overall Build quality is okay,
But there are three important things made me disapointed..
1- Very bad operation of opening and closing of Back cover..
2- Nonhandy perimeter (chrome stripe) of the device.
3- Unreachable Softreset switch w/o opening back cover.
Near Perfect

Been using my black Jade for over 3 mnths now. love it. No defect detected yet. I think lilithpro's set is one of those that manage to sneak pass the QA team.
I think the designers forgot to put a hole on the backcover for easy soft reset.
The only problem I have is that I need to remove the back cover in order to change the mSD card or to perform a soft reset.
Ah, and of course that there is no Hard-SPL available so that I can flush the English ROM!.....

It seems like some others' sets have the same problems. Doesnt seem like an isolated issue.
I resolved it by ordering a new one, exchanging back covers, and returning the new one. Now the back cover fits perfectly, without any gaps and sounds. The little bump still exists, but doesnt bother me much.
I never open the back cover, the sim and µsd-card remain in the device, since the transfer speed via activesync and mass storage is really fast (it was horribly slow on activesync with my palm treo pro, and mass storage wasnt available), so the back cover is no problem for me.

This has been asked few times by the folk who change casings but forget to move the magnet from the old casing to the new one. The switch is magnet operated and in fairness it's a tiny thing that is not obviously a magnet. See here:

Mike
PS not sure you really need to glue anything on the back of the screen do you? Perhaps a little tape might be better if really necessary.
THANKS
Didn't hurt at all
Just another dis & re-assemble all is fine now
Thanks again

I know this is kind of an older thread, but when I searched for my problem, this is the most recent thread that came up.
I'm having a similar problem to the OP--I recently took my phone apart per the wiki because one of my tracks completely came off the rail. When I put it back together, I had an extra small square shaped rubber piece that fell off the motherboard and my keyboard is unrepsonsive when I slide it out in addition to it not going to landscape mode. The only thing is that I didn't take apart the part of the case with the magnet--I was able to get the slider thing back on the track without completely removing the very back housing. Is there anything else that might be causing the problem?
Sorry if this aspect has been gone over before; when I searched, this was the only thread I saw with a similar problem.

Oh dearie me!!!
First, the little rubber piece is the microphone cover from the bottom end of the motherboard.
Second, the screen orientation does not work because the magnet operated switch is attached to the keyboard cable which is obviously not working because as you say the keyboard is not responsive.
The likely cause of both the keyboard problem and the orientation problem is this connector:
It's under the back cover and is OFTEN forgotten because when you replace the motherboard the push in connector gets curled up beneath the board rather than curling around to be plugged in. (OR you just need to push it firmly into place)
A wider angle picture:
Cheers
Oh, and WELCOME to XDA-Devs
Mike
I remember that little metal piece but did not remember to put it back when I was putting my phone back together. I'll have to give that a try later as I've come down with the flu. Thanks for the help!
Thanks for the advice Mike. It worked like a charm. Turns out one of my sliders coming off the tracks was the best thing that happened to my phone. In taking it apart, I also found that the speaker connection had completely come off which was the cause of my phone not having sound. So now aside from some cosmetic damage, my phone is back to working like new.
EDIT: 30/1/2012.
Just a follow up on this fix. Well, got sick of constantly having to replace the tape under the battery cover. Over time it flattens, so since I now use the S2 as my daily phone I decided to open it up.
First I found the GPS connection on the motherboard. It connects to / touches a small metal piece on the inside of the rear housing. It's like a U shaped connector so I decided to lift it up with my fingernail.
For a little while it worked great but the problem returned. So I decided to open it up again and lift the connector even higher. Unfortunately I broke it leaving only a flat bottom metal piece on the motherboard side. There was now no way for the 2 pieces to touch so I screwed it completely.
So I then decided to solder a small bit on the rear housing side. I did that and put it back together. Ever since then the GPS has truely been 100% fixed. It hasn't missed a beat over the last 3 or so months of trying.
END EDIT.
NOTE: This is a hardware fix for those whose GPS is completely busted (NO sat views & lock). It is NOT a fix to improve tracking or lock or make an already working GPS better.
After flashing every modem, fw and kernal version I had completely given up on my galaxy s GPS. It had to be a hardware fault.
Back when I first got it, it was OK but a few months later became useless. This fix is hardware related and takes only minutes to diagnose and fix.
It's also probably more useful for pre-October models (i9000 international) which had this fault.
I do not take credit for finding out the fix. Credit for that goes to member 'allottios' (who heard about it from 'cbdrift') for bringing it to my attention on another forum topic.
The fix is simple. Remove the back cover and to the right of the speaker is the GPS antenna. It is covered by what looks like some sort of soft plastic tape.
Now open a GPS test app and then apply light pressure to the very top of the antenna with your finger. NOT the middle or bottom - that makes it worse.
If, like me your GPS shows instant improvement then you have just worked out your problem.
Simply attach a small piece of double sided tape or similar to the top of the antenna so that when you put the back cover on again their is pressure on that spot.
Hope you get the same results I did.
Edit: PICS ADDED: 1ST PIC - AT THE TOP RIGHT CORNER, YOU CAN SEE A WHITE STRIP WHICH IS THE DOUBLE-SIDED TAPE I ATTACHED TO THE TOP OF THE GPS ANTENNA. I DID NOT PEEL THE TOP LAYER FROM THE TAPE SO IT WOULDN'T STICK TO THE BACK COVER.

Edit (03/05) - If this fix doesn't help, you may also want to try out another fix posted by 'stockie78' (post 209).
There is also a link below for more detail, including pics for this fix.
It is not as simple as the above fix and it involves removing the housing. I have not tried / tested this myself and am not responsible if you break your phone.
"stockie78
Unfortunately the g-spot trick did not work for me, so I decided to look a little closer and removed the plastic housing.
Another guy installed on the metal thingys there a cable and I did some test, too. Again no improvement with different cables and lengths.
But while fiddling around with the metal connector I thought maybe lifting it could help and indeed this was the trick for me. Improved my gps dramatically!
So instead of something pushing the antenna tighter, the metal connector now pushes harder and improves the signal quality.
Maybe a solution for some of you too..."

I can confirm that this works for me! Got a lock in two seconds and the arrow followed my path perfectly while I was on the bus, a feat that seemed impossible before! Thanks a million!
If I let go of the antenna the gps loses it signal straight away..
Seriously this deserves a bump! Got a lock on 12 Satellites(!) when putting pressure on the top of the antenna and lost it as soon as I let go.
I`m seriously impressed. Tested on Sygic Aura, iGo and CoPilot and they localyze me immediatly !!!! THANKS A LOT !!!!!
Tried on my SGS and can't honestly see and difference
I did something similar a while back by taking the phone appart to access the interior parts of the phone. I then bent the connector for the GPS up so that more pressure would be applied. It worked great at first then started to get worse after some time. I'm guessing this is because the connector reverted back to its original position (kind of like an elastic).
I suppose this is a similar trick, but instead of applying more pressure from the connector, it does it from the cover. I'll try to get hold of some tape to try this.
By the way I have a Galaxy S from July, and GPS sucks badly on mine.
Need detailed pictures!
Hope it works!!
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!
My jam just dropped. I just got gps lock within seconds... in my living room, where I had occasionally one sat in sight.
Just applied a small piece of that blue sticky stuff on the very top of the gps antenna and voilà. Cover on and lock is a go go.
Thanks for sharing this
nice one! locked 12 sats after 5 secs!
so a small tape should do the trick eh?
Getting a lock as soon as I start GPS Test! No more jumping around in Google Maps either! This is THE best fix for the SGS yet! Finally I'll be able to use my phone as my primary GPS navigator!
Is it possible for someone to post picture of area that needs to be pushed! Thanks!!!

You should see an elongated rectangle shape on the rightmost part of your phone after removing the back cover(just to the right of your speaker and sim card) - just apply some pressure on the top part(for me it takes a fair bit for it to work) and voila you're done. I'll try to post pics soon!

This actually works!!! I bought the galaxy s back in july and the last few months I have been unable to get a gps fix no matter what I tried! After reading this thread I went outside and pushed the top of the antenna. In a few seconds i got 5 meter accuracy and 8 satellites in use! Now I have to find a way to keep the antenna pressed! Thanks a million for the tip!

How much money did they spent to fix that issue?
Thanks man!

Well guys, I would like to try it, but my display seems to stop working as I remove the back cover?! Anyone has same issue? What could be wrong?
With backplate cover on, everything works just fine, but without....black screen. Although that phone seems to be responding
My DHD GPS contacts were broken when I tried to improve GPS function. So I used an electric wire( or any metalic wire) for antenna. I connected it to the broken position. And I made a hole over the flash cover. I made about 3 ~ 4 cm long wire come out of the hole. It works very well but ugly. Wire is flexible, you can hide it inside a jelly case, and you can take it out when necessary
Acutually no need to contact two points. Only one contact near to camera is needed. Here are some pictures instead of my poor english

can you post more photos of the mod? I'm interested...
My another photos
You can use any conductive metalic wire for antenna.

Ugly indeed! :-\
Maybe you can mod that retractable telescopic old-style radio antenna thing on the phone casing. It'll give a retro look to the phone

I have hoped so. And some manufacturer might make a special flash cover capable of enhancing GPS performance.
TO the OP: How broken are the contacts? I also had GPS issues, then I read somewhere that you can drop on a ball of solder to fix this. Basically, the thickness of the solder ball forces contact with the antenna.

First I soldered them, but overheated to destroy the point on the cover So I created another solution. Anyway this works well. Somebody said the length of wire would be best if 9.5 cm because it fits the frequency of GPS signal. But I think it's too long to carry in my pocket. He suggested another length, 4.75cm ( 1/2 of 9.5 cm ).
What Watt soldering iron did you use?

Why would you do something as ugly as this mod to your phone when you could at least hide the wire inside? Not to mention this mod has been posted and around for awhile. This is old news. And whoever told you 9.5cm or 4.7cm for antenna was pulling your leg.

Well 4.7cm is the correct size for a quarter wave antenna. So that is correct.
GPS Accuracy 1 meter!
Yesterday on a moving( 88 km/h ) car.
I used about 5 cm long cable for GPS antenna replacement.
Do you have pictures of the inside connection to the GPS module ??
The inside connection to the GPS module.
I extracted a thin cable from a USB cable( including some thin cables inside).
I tied the cable to fix it tightly on the flash cover. And I made a hole over the cover.
The flash photo uploaded is an old one. I broke several covers : (
You can connect it to only single contact. But I think connecting two contacts would be better.
The cable is very thin, so you can hide it inside a jelly case. In my case, eiven if it is hidden inside, GPS signal can be detected( but accuracy is low then ).
My current cass with the GPS anttena.
It's a jelly case. I made a hole on the upper side of the case. Not very ugly, I think.
easy fix
Hey guy's,
Here is an easy fix download GPS status from market touch the menu button and select tools and select manage aGPS settings reset the data and select download restart your phone it worked for me got around 5 satellites in 5 seconds
But any software tweak is useless if you have connection problem... I tired every software, gps.conf file but eventually i ordered a replacement flash cover/gps antenna from ebay about 10$ with tools.
I don't know about u man but that really worked with my dhd
after using the sensation battery inside my desire hd, i'm curious about such mods, but i hope i don't have to use this one, because it's really ugly
but nice, really nice

It's very possible to put the wire inside the antenna cover and get almost the same performance with no external sign of modification.
True. there are different ways of hiding the antenna. You'd only loose maybe 3-8m of accuracy, but it's better then having a wire sticking out.
