Looking for a ROM that is good for Media - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Short Version
What ROM is more Fun and Less Business.
Long Version Read Below.
I am a newbie that just got my first Pocket PC phone. Thanks to help from Babski and a few other great members of this forum, they have shown me where to get the info to learn to update my HTC TYTN. I have upgraded the radio and changed from WM5 to WM6. Now I like WM6 however the one I installed, is really not what I am looking for. I really want to be able to play a great range of media files. It seems like the Windows Mobil media player only likes about 1/4 of my Video files. I plan to drop in a 4 gig SDHC card and bring Movies and TV shows along with me. I am using a 1gig card for the time being.
What ROM would be best suited for Media. I am not really using the business end of the features so I don't mind giving up on a lot of those.

Search for TCPMP. It will play everything

It took me a bit of digging to find it, but thank you, I tried one of the files I could not play before and it worked so now I am loading a few other files to see how well they work. Oh and I changed up ROM's to Black Satin as well.

when you say media files do you only mean video files? If so then i would say the advice given is spot on...
however if you also want to play music files then take a look at HTCAudioManager.
I have been blown away with it in comparison to WMPmobile.
Also not to put a downer on black satin, but you might want to try TNT 2.0 i use the 6PM pro version WITH the HTC home built in.
I LOVE it! extreamly FAST, has tcpmp built in as well as HTCsudio manager, and the HTC home bar allows for music play back control from the today screen.
if you're playing with roms i would say you ahve to at least try the latest TNT it ROCKS!!!!
(speaking of which its also rock solid stable, only 2 soft resets in over 3 weeks BOTH of which when running tomtom and i think it was tomtom that killed thep hone not the rom.)
Acuum
(Drunken too much to spell check... good luck)

Hiya! Some Recommendations please!!

Hi Everyone!
I just joined this forum as I've just found some answers I've been looking for!
I've got an XDA2i - the O2 branded version, after a very happy partnership with an XDA2 since early 04.
I've just gotten rid of the O2 active software after hard resetting and setting up in corporate mode. Unit seems to run 'quicker' - however I'd like to gauge some opinions.
1. Is there a way of getting back the battery meter and Profiles functions? if not, I guess 3rd party software would achieve this - but which ones are recommended? ot thought highly of here on this forum?
2. I'd like to get a better media player, is there any addons to Windows media that include a graphic equaliser? and allow playback of more video files and enhanced codecs? if not, again, whats the general consensus here as to which application works well?
3. I (slightly shamedly) have the hooky version of TomTom 5, I envisage more driving coming up as I get the ball rolling on my new business startup and will be getting my own registered copy. I've noticed the 'freeze' problem with TT5 and am now hoping that without the active software, it'll run properly. I looked through a posting that mentioned a 'patch' ? will I need this? another posting mentioned TT are aware of problems running TT5 on the XDA2i - Is it just best to wait till a new release comes out that takes care of this issue? Has anyone got the XDA2i and TT5 running smoothly?
4. Is it worth updating to the latest ROM? I've read a few of the posts and it seems the newer version has issues!
5. Finally, I know theres those utilities that look after quite a few functions and are what should have been included in Windows Mobile anyway. Something called 'Sqb Pocket plus'? is it any good? I want to be able to put more icons on my 'desktop view' be able to switch between applications easily and be able to 'close' programs properly. Any recommendations on good performing software?!
Overall, I'm very happy with my previous XDA2 and now this XDA2i, I try to perform a reset every 2 days or so, and other days it just keeps on going for 3-4 days before needing one. Apart from that, I've found the unit to be reliable, well performing and a great all in one unit.
I use a Scandisk 1GB SD card (normal speed one), along with a silicone carry cover, looking now to see what else I can install and use!!
Cheers for now! Hope I get some feedback! sorry for the long post!

Hi there, while I don't own an XDA 2i so I can't help you much on specific issues regarding that device I can certainly help with the first two questions.
1. For a battery meter I strongly recommend you check out Spb Pocket Plus, it comes with a battery and memory monitors and is highly configurable to do a lot of things. I've heard there are some issues with version 3 of the software with regards to the XDA II, I don't know if this carries over to the IIi as well, but I'm running 2.5 and have no problems so check it out!
2. As for a media player I'd recommend TCPMP (Formerly Beta Player) it will play all sorts of files, including those encoded in divx and xvid, and it's totally free too so it can't hurt to check it out!
Hope this helps and I'm sure others in the forum can help with the more device specific questions!
Hi
I like you had an XDA2 since early 04 and upgraded to the 2i in Feb this year. Good move, though in a few months you'll wish you'd waited for the Exec ;o) I'm ditching my 2i soon for it!
1) The o2 stuff comes as all-or-nothing, once it's uninstalled it's all gone I'm afraid. I would recommend Pocket Plus from SPB (www.sbpsoftwarehouse.com) as mjames_84 has suggested. It's probably the most widely used utility in the PPC market and that is for a good reason. You can have battery meters on the Today screen, but also with P+ across the very top of your screen which is always present. Very useful. There is also Journal Bar, which provides something similar plus one or two others (http://www.omegaone.com/journalbar/default.htm). www.handango.com or www.pocketgear.com will allow you to see all the alternatives.
2) Beta Player is OK and is better than it appears, though I personally would recommend either Conduits PocketPlayer, or PocketMind's PocketMusic. I think these are considered the Big Two commercially speaking. My preference recently switched from PocketPlayer to PocketMusic. Very customisable, easy to use and the extra features are what gives it the edge over Conduits'. It's also good value for money.
http://www.pocketmind.com/pmfp.htm
http://www.conduits.com/products/player/
3) TT5 with the 5.1 upgrade plus PC_Arcade's Tomtom POI patch should remove the freezing. It certainly seems to have with mine. Don't download the first one you see though, once you've installed 5.1 (though you may have to search for a "hooky" one elsewhere as I've heard the genuine 5.1 update removes whatever hooky 5.0 installation cracks are in there) look towards the end of this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=24268&start=25 for the 5.1 POI patch and install it. I still have the issue with POIs showing causing lockups but I believe that's the phone / SD card problem even though it's a Lexar 32x 1GB. If you turn POIs off but set the POI warning feature to show the ones you need to see, you will still be warned as you approach them.
4) Always upgrade to the latest ROM. Is your 2i straight from o2 or have you bought it third party? If it's from o2 then download the new ROM from http://www.my-xda.com/xda2i_soft.html and install as normal. If it's not then you'll need to follow the instructions set out in various sections of http://forum.xda-developers.com/vie...ostorder=asc&highlight=straight+imate&start=0
5) Pocket Plus as mentioned earlier is the best in my opinion, though there are options such as iLauncher and Journal Bar, amongst others. Search for them in Handango or PocketGear, though I'd highly recommend trying out P+.
Hope this helps. Don't worry about long posts...everyone on here is always happy to help.
Cheers

Sound
For better sound quality:
After upgrading my Himalaya to WM6, PocketMind's PocketMusic versions 3 to 5 don't work properly anymore.
I've tried Conduits Player but the sound is worse.
TCPMP doesn't play WMA although it says it does.
I've tried GPS Player but the sound quality is not still perfect.
Not even satisfied with iMusic withMP3.
Can't find replacement for PocketMusic.
Until somebody recommended SRS WOW HD.
It's like having sub woofer in your ears!
It works great with plain Media Player; no need for equaliser.
(Just set profile to Headset, Treble Reducer.)

New Wing Owner. Could use some tips.

First of all, I love it.
I have currently installed:
-Pocket Weather
-Google Maps
-Battery Status
-And a 2gb SD card.
I have overclocked it at 247mhz. Read it was save, and so on.
Now, I have seen other phones with MUCH more memory. I have been having about 10mb free daily.
I have seen phones with 85mb+ daily. Just curious how that can be established.
My phone is great, and quick at the moment, but there are those time where it holds back for a second of 2.
What can I do to keep the phone running good? Without crashing, keeping it up to date, and keeping it save?
Another thing would be, how can I watch videos on Youtube? I downloaded a flash player a while back, but it never seemed to work. Heard people downloading Flash Player Bundle, but it never worked for me :-(.
Thanks a bunch guys!
to watch youtube you need a streaming media player (HTC)..... as far as the memory you S.O.L. unless you flash your rom!!!!! the only tip i can give you is do some reg tweaks, page pool is a must and since its new do a hard resest and when it start to load the ppc apps do a soft reset (or pull the battery out) to stop it from load alot of that stuff you wont use. Also get a 4gig sd card and put everything on it, right now my wing has 23 program memory and 14 storage memory that with about 20 programs on it... GOOD LUCK....keep in mind this is all trail and error ive hard reset alot in the beginning and now i softrest about 10 time a day trying to make it better..."dont be afraid my brother close yo eyes and sqeeze the ************" fad2blk
if you want to get the most out of your phone, I'd reccommend flashing a new rom.
Personally, I'd recommend one of ITJE or ASERG roms.
If you want to watch Youtube movies on your device, Download the latest TCPMP and Flash Video Bundle. Install them both, then go to youtube page with your device.
Search on a title and tap on the picture.
You'll get 3 options.
Play Video: Open TCPMP and streams the video.
Save Video: It saves the video
Linked Page: It open the page is it would on your regular computer. without the player.
This should do. And if you want to run it faster or anything, Take duprade's advice.
Read a manual on How to Flash A New ROM. There are cool features on a custom ROM.
Such as the TCPMP as i mentioned before. You'll get more memory and you can make the phone run faster as you have now.
Oh.. about the memory issue. Why you have about 10MB free is the fact that the standard Windows Mobile eats all the space.
Our ROM developers here on XDA-developers have cured this problem.
Im running Touch-IT right now and i have 36 MB storage free and 15 MB programs.
I know this is a long reply but since your new here and your new to your wing, i thought i gave you this advice.
Welcome to the forum. If you need any help about your wing, feel free to post a new thread and we'll help you!
Flash your phone~!
You should flash your [hone. The new stuff that has been released thanks to all the geniuses on this forum has made the wing a great ppc. check out ttrans forum for windows mobile 6.1!

phones with 81mb of memory (program OR storage) are simply equipped with more memory than the Herald is.
something that i do that works great
before i change my rom i copy all the programs that are installed on my phone to my computer for example games, internet browsers, all media players except for TCPMP and Windows Media, picture viewers, google maps, and drawing/ illustrating programs. they are all pretty stable and run perfect when i update my rom and copy them to my Micro SD Card. i save at least 20 MB of program storage.
oh and the rom i use is OpenTouch V3.0 Lite. saves me a ton of memory
Alright, so where is a good web site to download this stuff? (Player and Page pool)
There was a web site that had a bunch of free downloads. It was pretty neat, but I lost the link to it...

Some very noob questions here

Hello all,
I have receintly upgraded to an Xperia X1 on Vodafone UK, coming from a very old out of date phone, it is quite a leap, though i am use to Windows mobile.
I have been reading some of the topics here and have come across some questions, which i hope some kind sole does not mind answering for me.
1) A lot of talk is about flashing ROMS, i assume this is some kind of upgrade to the firmware or OS. Would somebody mind just explaining what it is and why its of benifit.
2)Another thing that has generated a lot of talk is hard SPL, again what is this?
3) I am a keen gamer and want to get some good games up and running on my phone. Though a lot of what i try does not work, i have seen suggestion on other forums that a bit of software can help a lot of compatible games run. Does anybody know what it is i may require? I have seen a video on youtube of somebody running some FPS games is this fake or is it possible?
4) As a new Xperia owner i would also like some suggestions of anything that people think to be essential, to get the best out of my phone. Be these software, firmware upgrades ect. I have installed Batti and Xperia Tweak both of which have been extremely usefull.
Cheers in advance for any help.
1) Have you ever formatted your PC because it's full of junk and it's the only way to remove the crap and start a fresh? Bit like that with some ROM's. Others start from nothing and install programs for you. I find it best to use a clean ROM (Jacks) then install what I want on top.
2) Hard_SPL allows you to flash a new ROM onto the device.
3) FPS is possible but remember it is a phone at the end of the day. Alot of games run fine and the rest just need the VGA fix as it's a different resolution.
Hope that helps
Thanks for the swift and helpfull responce.
So if i was to flash a new rom would it speed up my phone any or stop/reduce all the random errors i get?
I have heard that i may need to install .net framework 3.5 onto my phone to get some of the games working. How easy and safe is this to do? I assume it is just like adding anyother software to my phone.
Yes I would (and have) installed 3.5 framework. It is easy to install and maintain as it's just a cab installer.
I use the Jacks 1.4 Lite ROM. It's much quicker than stock and is as stable as you make it really. I highly reccomend at least reading up about it.

Well so far I've installed SPB Backup, which does pretty much what it says on the tin. Useful if you plan on doing any modding, I guess. I also stuck SPB time on there coz I needed a decent stopwatch. There's a neat little program called Touch Response that basically makes the phone vibrate slightly when you press the touchscreen. The strength of the vibrate can be configured. It's not essential but it gives a nice physical feedback which touch screens often lack. Flash 3.1 is available for download and works with the Opera 9.5 browser. Oh yeah, coreplayer's a good one too. I can't remember where I got all of these but there should be some links on here. You could also try www.xperia-x1.com or www.inexperia.com or www.modaco.com
My current software setup includes:
Resco Explorer - Nice touch-friendly file explorer with many options
Mini Stumbler - Helps you find wifi hotspots
Call Firewall - Nice people ditcher
Coreplayer - for playing videos with assorted codecs
G-Alarm - Cool alarm replacement, you have to solve a puzzle before being able to snooze it
Missed call reminder - beep reminder for missed calls
Newsbreak - RSS reader
Pocket Tunes - iTunes playlist sync for winmo
Resco Audio Recorder - lets you record voice notes and your own phone conversations
Spb Wireless Monitor - lets you run reports on internet usage
Stopwatch - standard stop watch
hTorch - turns your camera flash into a flashlight
This is why i sold my iphone to come back to windows mobile, it's sooo much flexible, I missed being able to mod my phone.
Thanks once again for the great responces and help, they have been of great use i will be getting a good 80% of what has been suggested, it sounds right up my street.

Just Bought an HD2 WICH Apps are really needed for daily use??

As you see the title! Please put some apps for HD2!
Thanks a LOT
Appreciate it!!
Wifi remote access for file transfers (if you have wifi in the house) because it's faster than a usb cable.
The newest version of the facebook app from MS marketplace
Pimbackup
dutty's task manager
I have more but they aren't for day to day use (except for maybe coreplayer but that's not free). Also search for tips and tweaks and have a read.
+1 Wifi Remote Access
G-Remote ($9) if you watch TV/video through your PC and want an ace remote control
TCMPMP Video Player (free) - so you can just drop videos straight on to your phone (like Divx and Xvid) and play them straight off (or CorePlayer but it's $30)
AlReader2 - The BEST ebook-reader bar none
Google Maps (obviously)
TomTom or iGo (both paid) are both great GPS navigators
FPSECE (I've not tried it since it came out of beta) which, for $10, gives you a frickin' PLAYSTATION on your phone!!!
MyPlayer (free) is the WM iPlayer equivalent - plus other freeview channels and live TV (assuming you're UK)
And down the line, consider looking at how to flash ROMs etc. if you want more tabs/newer features/better speed and stability (if you choose the right ROM!)
There's a Torch application (free) which uses your flash as an emergency torch - very bright and very handy!
Oh, and Windows MyPhone is (imo) the best way to back-up contacts, texts, etc.
Lastly, need a game for the bus? Try Experiment 13 - it's free and the graphics/physics are great!
Oh, and want to replace the basic mp3 player? Try S2P, very colourful, and fast to navigate, very similar to the iphone music player if you've seen that - although it's just left beta and is now $4 (although probably an old version about)
---
All of these are findable on XDA. Finally, welcome to the forum!!
Hrs of fun ahead

firstly download marketplace to get microsoftmyphone very useful
Mainly download cookies 1.8&editor you'll end up tweaking your hd2 more than playing with apps I find.
Come back to this section very often as you'll always find something new all the time.

I happen to know that there are some major issues with cookies home tab 1.8. Don't you think recommending a piece of know buggy software (no matter how good previous versions were) is a bit reckless?

There seem to be serveral crash bugs in it, major slow down issues and from what i can gather it's a bit of a mess. All the custom rom threads are on fire with request for 1.7 cabs (fools should have kept backups) and declarations of wishing to wait till 1.8.1
Personally i think sense is perfectly fine for my needs. It just need s kick in the butt to make it faster when it's after it's first boot.

I've not had no problems with cookies 1.8. I think it actually runs much smoother and is far more customizable than previous versions, no issues so far from a mess, anyways he was asking for opinions on apps & I gave mine
I like Bing for movie times. It also has turn-by-turn directions. Map-wise, I think Google Maps looks better, but Bing is a far sleeker application.
No issues from 1.8 for me... But let's keep this thread on track for our newbie friend, right?
To newbie : Cookie's Home Tab is a fantastic modification to your homepage, which provides you with many more shrtocuts on your homepage and tons of other configurations (such as a music player, task-list etc), but as you can see, the latest version may be buggy. Previous versions are stable as anything tho.
Thanks!
Thank you all for your quick responses!! LovE YA ALLLL!
i think everyone forgot to mention office mobile 2010 and i forgot to mention the following:
Leo Cpu speed
Chainfire's 3D driver patch
BSB tweaks
SRS wowhd 2.1
myriad java
vncviewer
And if you like gaming and a bit of nostalgia try out fpsece. It's a playstation emulator
just about to type BSB tweaks and saw the post above..
Fpsece - a must
skyfire - for browsing flash sites like tvcatchup.com
xda shutdown - handy for a quick reset
HDWalls - full screen wallpaper
JWMD icon changer - change all icons in start menu etc.
LeoCPU speed
world cup app - www.mobilepractices.com
Scilors Groove Mobile/Downloader - stream or download any tune
G-Alarm - not free but very good alarm app
mem maid or SKTools - to clean up your HD2
my Player - great bbc iplayer and live TV app (in the UK)
Sky - (if you've got a sky box you can remote record)
Games....
Mini Golf Wacky Worlds
SPB Puzzle
Experiment 13
Pool Rebel
Ivy the Kiwi
Morphgear
Fpsece (so good I put it in twice!)
that should keep you going for a bit!
if your gonna suggest the world cup application then i'll suggest the F1 live timing application. Watching the canadian grand prix on sunday with it was amazing.
My essentials are:
1. Dial-up Enabler/Disabler
2. NETCFv35
3. RegEdit
4. Remote Tracker (with MyMobiler on the PC)
5. SPB TV
6. WunderRadio
7. Total Commander
Navi: MN7
Other: GPS Weather Radar, mobiPocket Reader with Wikipedia (2008)
Works fine alltogether!
Greetings
oldT830man (now a new HTC HD2 man, but I keep my T830)
Hello All, thanks for this thread, very useful. One question, what is the right regeditor?
I have used TCM, but can't figure out how to import reg keys (tweaks exported to save effort next time I hard reset). PHM regeditor seems to have the import keys greyed out. Mobile registry editor and Tascal seem to import files, but the keys don't actually change. Am I just a n00b and missing something?
Figured it out, simply copy the reg file into the registry root. TCM does it all then!
i use remote desktop client to log onto my pc im suprised more people dont use it as often as i do to control their pc its so easy to set up
all u got to do is right click my computer, properties and enable remote connections from there.
then when ur on your own wifi just connect to the pc's hostname or ip.
forward port 3389 on ur router to your desktop pc and you can do it over the internet too by connecting to your external ip / hostname
i use it a lot to do stuff i cant do on my phone, also if i want to download something when im out i can set it and it will be done when i get home etc
.........
i also play emulators and just installed as many tower defense games as i could find.
tomtom and igo... both installed to memory card and the shortcuts are set up to reinstall when i flash. the settings DO save, but i have addresses set in my contacts anyway and tomtom has the feature to look up from your addressbook
i use torch on my shortcuts, but a different one that doesnt have a user interface its just on and off.
i have my brightnesses (both) set to dimmest, and i have the app autobacklight as a shortcut so i can switch between dark and auto (which is always bright enough). its usually on auto unless im in a dark environment. 1 click dim mode lol
batti is another good one. there are lots of programs like batti that let you put your battery level accross the top of the screen, but batti is the best to me because it lets you customise the colours perfectly so you can match it to whatever colour theme you got going on or just have it how you want it.
i used to use s2u2 because you could change the background randomly and show lots of appointments on the main screen. and read texts check missed called etc. dont even have to unlock your phone half the time...
i just installed omarket and that has unlocked a lot for me. you should def do that. i had to make an account on the website but it was worth the hassle.
metaldetector is a great app. so wierd how it actually works.
i have various guitar tuners, im still looking for the best one though...
lmt is another good one that basically makes your phone way more useable. i dont use all the features, but its still added a lot to the way i can use the phone
i read some pdf's on my phone now that it doesnt take ages to render pages...
ive used wififofum in the past, i should have that on my phone now really its v useful when you wanna see all the networks around you.
msn to chat once in a while
mostly been using energyrom

the most common way is to plug your hd2 into your pc via usb.
then copy the files you have downloaded (usually its .cab) and paste them onto your phones sd card storage (via my computer)
then unplug your phone from the pc
then on your phone, use file explorer to find the cabs and run them. that will install it.
then to run it, find it in the start menu...
as for what to install first, system stuff.
but really, if you install a rom you will wipe all your data, but dont worry about flashing and roms yet, just try out different apps and customisations you like while you pick it all up.
i install things like s2u2 first (lockscreen app) when ive set my phone up i use it for a while before i install the next thing, so that if a problem pops up its usually because of the last thing you installed/modified.
read a lot of stuff. dont worry if it doesnt make sense at first.
After you install all those recomended applications above, try a keyboard called Swype, your head will hit the roof with amazement!! so be careful.

[Q] android really faling here

coming from wm6.1 and having the streak for one day..i feel really a bit disappointing.
the screen is great, it's fast but..the mean purpose of the streak is surfing and multimedia.
so after one day of testing.
stock 1.6..i don't think 2.1 is better.
-lost my streak icon in explorer..so no exchange of files possible..it there under usb in the manage pc tab..but i don't see it in explorer and others
only a icon showing up in the streak saying...scanning existing media files..and it stays there.
- no bluetooth connection possible to the pc..not recognized..all my other devices had no problem with it..nokia, htc etc
- no streaming possible..not recognizing the format (codec), so no orb stream, no tversity streams, no direkt stream from the server (only one or two formats).
really horrible.
- no wifi connection to pc, only to router. tried everything.
damn if i coult port wm6.1 to this device, it would be a super mini mobile computer.
some things could be done but it takes ages to find the right app for it.
the pc connection is the biggest problem for now, been seaching for 4 hours on differend forums and nope...no solution yet.
some idea's or solutions please
EDIT: found the solutions..thanks all..damn the big screen is incredible
Right - it may just be that your windows drivers aren't set up correctly. Did you install the dell suite?
If you are on 2.1 you need the upgraded suite from the dell site. Also you may need to muck around with the drivers
see parts 1 to 1.14 step 11 from
Link:http://android.modaco.com/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=64083
for a good explanation. Also make sure you have clicked on the status bar and selected the option to copy files to and from the computer otherwise the pc wont see the sd card.
Ad hoc networking only works on Steves 2.2 (froyo) build release 1. Which has the advantage of being a lot faster as well and it has flash.
AS for streaming media -I'm not sure what you need for that - I copy to SD card and watch using rockplayer, I have seen people discussing streaming and all I remember is that people were using mp4 files, but not which program they were using.
~I think you have to remember this is a new os to you so think how confusing windows was on the first day you tried it. Android becomes second nature after a few days.
Good luck - and stick with it, I'd never go back now...
i try
i can see my dell on the pc now..after 2 hours searching
i installed websharing so i could transfer files to and from the phone.
the streaming is important cause i have a server with a tv-card running..so i could stream recording to the dell and other pc's around the house. Also all my donloaded movies are on that server.
i installed yxplayer ..pffff, makes me feel happy again..plays divx, xvids etc withoud a hitch.
still no luck with streams..but i keep searching and will reply if i find a solution.
now i have to find a decent app for making folders disappear in the pictures and video app..so i can keep the private pictures private in one app and see them in another app

Android takes some time to learn. More so from a nuts and bolts (hacker) view than just the general UI. However, I've found it gets progressively easier when you take time to understand ADB and the basic linux structure of Android.
