Hi im looking for a PDA phone to replace my N70 and my phone carrier has offered me a s200 or a Touch PPC for the same price. After reading some reviews i see that people with the Touch are really happy about it but i see the s200 has some better capabilities like 128mb memory (is that ram or flash?) or the UMTS connection.
I actually love the design and size of the Touch but i'm a little afraid that i get a slow PPC. What do you think?
What are you talking about? Memory and processor are both the same, and the Prophet does NOT have UMTS capability!
The differences are the size, the OS, the screen layout, and the SD-card format.
Ok im sorry i got a bit missinformed about this. I only read the features tab in the carrier website and it looks like that information wasnt quite exact lol.
So if both are the same in performance id better go for the Touch wouldnt I?
Yeah, I would recommend that.
You should always check here - http://wiki.xda-developers.com/
Well, assuming you're actually talking about the S200 (Prophet), it has a couple of advantages over the Touch (Elf), like more hardware buttons, separate USB and headphones, cheaper SD cards and easy upgradeability.
But the Touch is newer and supports WM6 natively, is smaller and lighter ... offered at the same price, well, I guess you have your answer

What do you mean by easy upgradeability? Does it have 3.5mm exit?

No it only has a 2,5 mm jack outlet.. But you can use a adapter for that to 3,5 mm .. The Elf does "only" use the new type of htc's headphone outlet that it the same as the charging outlet, which is in my opinion a shame..
But i would no doubt choose a touch (elf)
I have an S200 and my girlfriend has Touch. I would prefer the Touch anyday, it's lighter, much smaller and it's pretty much the same on the specs...
I've had the S200 for 8months and my first experience was that the moder board got fried. Probably a bad unit to begin with. I had to send it to Spain where it was purchased so it could be repaired under warranty. I also notice that it requires more soft resets than my old Tmobile MDA(rare) which is also by HTC. I think the issue is the software that I have installed from here is not fully tested and as we all know has some bugs. I still appreciate that we are able to get this software otherwise I could not use it here with a Spanish rom. i do love the device size and when it works well it is awesome. The touch is smaller and lighter but it has the same slow porcessor 195mhz.
i hv both.
if u want style go for touch.
if u r going to use pda features more then go for prophet.
i would personally recommend prophet with a customized wm6 rom.

There's no way this is going to replace my Universal. I wouldn't even consider anything without a VGA screen at this point. Besides... I like the swivel screen that affords a larger keyboard.

Agree.
Hermes looks like the 3G replacement for the Wizard anyway.
Hoax photo - video cam spelled as 'vedio cam'
And it's a JAM style phone, not a 'true' XDA type phone.
No contest.

For me, there is a contest. I'll miss the VGA screen, but I think I can cope. I went from a JAM to an Exec for 3G, now there's no reason for me not to go back to the smaller size, especially since I have an aquapac and a RAM Mount holder all at the right size for my bike and GPS...
What's the going rate for a second hand Exec?
I dont know if its the same pic or not (too lazxy to click the link, and correct my spelling apparently)
But heres the pic of the Hermes I came across a month ago in another article.
In any case this is just a spiffed up 3G version of the Wizard, I dont see it as a competitor for the Universal.

For many, thnat's effectively what the Universal is.
(And a damned good one!)
What other good alternatives are coming?
I'd like a VGA but don't want to come back to the Universal as it's too big for me.
im not dealing with HTC anymore..the new one i bought crapped up on me 4days later. (white screen)
I think i will go Symbian OS

All hardware has a percentage of faults. Don't let one faulty device make you change to a completly different OS, you fool.
You obviously wnted a HTC Windows OS device for some sort of good reason.
Why not simply get a different Mobile Windows device?
Is that too easy?
Yeah, you are right. The screen that died on me has made me moody and thats not right. Infact WM 5 devices are of the advantage if you want to use it corporately..
Yes, in a corporate usage it is a must; although I also enjoy playing great games, which I'm not quite sure to get the same quality in other systems... There are also a huge choice of all kind of softwares available...
I can't imagine going for another OS.
I am considering the Hermes as well but I am waiting on the replacement for the Uni to come out [if HTC has something planned] before I make my decision final. I'd probably miss VGA as well I tried using a qVGA device again [hp iPAQ rw6828] and always ended up going back to the Uni's gorgeous VGA screen. I've since sold the iPAQ.
As for Symbian OS I think it depends on which variant of the OS, for now I'd stay away from the N series [3rd Ed of Symbian Series 60] as most people I know who got these mobiles complain that they're really slow... maybe the hardware needs to be updated by Nokia to support their *new* OS.
Ehm, hello? Hermes is a mobile phone with PDA capabilites and the Universal is a PDA (rather even a UMPC) with phone capabilities. These two are different kind of devices, as both are what they are in first place, but can never be perfect for what they are supposed to be in second place! I always wanted a replacement for my Psion Revo, with a keyboard big enough to actually write. And I do write with 6-8 fingers on my Universal, where as on the Wizard I can write with 2-4 fingers max - that makes a difference. Plus I can put the Universal on the table and put the screen in such a position so I can do video calls without having to hold the device - impossible with Hermes! Don't get me wrong: Hermes is a wonderful device for those who want a mobile phone with A+ hard- and software. But it can never be a replacement for those who want a UMPC they really can work with...

I have also got a lot of fresh air with the Uni, maybe the first time after leaving my Revo.
I'd say that both are PDAs with phone capabilities, and not a phone with PDA capabilities. However, the Uni is more focused on PDA (maybe 80% PDA 20 phone) and the Hermes is something like (60% pda 40 phone). HOwever, right now I'm after an Advance TC MAGIC. I'll miss my Exec's VGA though... if only we could upgrade screens to VGA at will... along with the appropriate OS tweaks, of course.
Is this the first release of it in the UK?
The Register reports on the Orange SPV M3100.
There's also HTC TyTN already out.
nope, not a universal upd8/upgrade/replacement as its not VGA.
yes, i do agree that WM PDA-phones r more PDA than phone as opposed 2 symbian devices w/c r more phone than PDA. d palm OS PDA-phones (treos) can b classified IMO as d more balanced PDA & phone. but im more of a PDA person than phone so i still prefer WM PDA-phones.
y doesnt HTC release another VGA PPC-phone? isnt d universal popular enough?
Alright, Quite a while ago I dropped my MDA Pro, and it was total loss.
Luckily my insurance covers it, and I can now buy a new phone for the same price.
The problem is that there's a new phone on then block, the HTC Tytn, and I'm not sure wether I want another Universal or rather a new Tytn.
As far as I can see, the advantages for the Universal are:
Universal has bigger screen
Universal has 640x480 (while Tytn has 320x480)
Universal has normal SD cards (thus 4GB, and probably faster), Tytn has MicroSD which have only just reached 2GB. (And I've recently bought a 4GB SD card)
Universal has a larger keyboard.
Universal has a proper headphone jack, whereas Tytn needs a converter from the MiniUSB thing (that will probably let loose very easily)
And the advantages for the Tytn are:
Tytn has 2.0mp camera, while Universal only has 1.3
Tytn has Bluetooth 2
Tytn has Quad-band and all those extras (EDGE, HSPDA etc)
Tytn is (supposedly) faster
Tytn is smaller
Another problem is that all the stores currently have the HTC Tytn in stock, yet noone seems to be able to sell me a HTC Universal/QTek 9000
Anyway, I was hoping for some feedback as to which phone to buy, and possibly some differences I didn't take into account yet...
So basically, which one should I buy ?[/list]
Difficult decission. If you can wait, at the end of 2006 will arrive the Universal successor. But if you cant i prefer Universal. For me, VGA and large keyboard is critical.....
Cheers
I don't know how often you travel or the places you carry your phone to but size plays a big factor. I often find myself grabbing the HW6515 or a Wizard device over the Universal to take to places because they're more pocket friendly and are easier to use. But my biggest concern is damaging the Universal, not only is it expensive and sexy, parts and a replacement for it here in the US is scarce. 8)
The only way for me to recommend the Universal is if you also have a smaller device you can switch to when its size will be a problem. I really don't use my Qtek 9100 much now that I have the 9000, but when I need it I have it, with pretty much the same capability. If this is your only phone, I suggest getting the TyTN or Hermes (same thing).
I'm currently testing hTc Z, a variant of Hermes100 for Japanese market, and I tend to agree with those recommending Hermes. It's probably the best WM5 phone edition device you can get at the moment. TyTN is Hermes200 but it shouldn't be much different.
Having said that, the big difference is the keyboard. Not only is the size smaller, the key touch isn't as robust as Universal's and I really can't type fast as I can with Universal. I almost hate typing with Hermes.
If you don't need to type much with your device, I recommend getting Hermes. Otherwise, Universal should be better or you should wait for its successor.
My 2 cents...
I had then universal, then I sold it and I replaced it with the hermes (my current pocket pc phone).
I miss the great great great screen.... but now I download files on hsdpa network at 1.2 mbit / sec, and if an area it's not covered by umts/hsdpa I can count on edge (190 kbit /sec). Imho the Universal is tooooo slow and too bigger. It bought Hermes for its dimensions! It's just a bit longer then wizard but if you hold it in one hand (with wheel) you can do everything (except typing on keyb, you need two hands)! However I found the micro-sd a lot slow when I paste mp3s from my pc, and it lack 3.5mm jack!!!
Regarding the universal, all I can say is that it is BULKY BULKY BULKY. If you are going out, last thing you want is this phone in your pocket. I end up carrying it in my hand which actually sucks. Also, its not too fast and the battery will last you a maximum of about 7 months or so.
On the other hand, the screen is gorgeous and it looks really cool
So guess you have to weigh your priorities.
If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't have bought the Universal and would have been much happier with a smaller phone.
Cheers.
I had this phone for about 2mths its the greatest phone in the world except in virginia reception sucks with cingular. So i have to change despite my many long waiting period of finding any way to keep it.
So im gonna sell this. Now i need something either comparable or better, the size is not an issue for me as i would keep this if the reception was better.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

I don't know why all the new HTC devices have micro-SD slots, I love normal sized SD cards because they are very cheap and very high capacity (8GB SDHC cards only £29.99 on eBay!). And what's with all these 2.5mm (and even mini-USB) headphone sockets?! The 3.5mm jack on the Universal is perfect, so why change it HTC!
I also like the cheap 3rd party add-ons for the Uni, I have a 3200mAH battery which was like $20 from eBay, and now 5200mAH are even available! So your phone can run with light use for almost 2 weeks without needing a single charge, no other phone even comes close to the Uni for battery life

Yeah, a real shame to as an upgraded Universal is about the only thing I would consider buying right now. Universal was the perfect size and usability. I just wish it had a few upgrades (quad band, faster cpu, gpu, built-in gps, ext display, more memory).
I almost upgraded to Athena, but it is a bit to big, and the keyboard is just held on magnetically, not really a clamshell, hinged thing and so doesn't meet the need of being able to easily flip it open and type anywhere as there is that possibility of the main phone dropping away from the keyboard while typing on the go. Plus the size and no vibrate were deal killers.
The Universal is just perfect. Small enough to use as a phone should the BT headset not be handy. Form and Function it is just amazing.
Anyone considering the ETEN Glofiish M800 yet?

Sounds like the Nokia E90 If you love Windows Mobile and can't live without a touchscreen then this is probably not acceptable.
I have both an E90 and an XDA EXEC and swap my SIM between them depending on what I need to use my phone for, but the SIM tends to stay longer in the E90 as I find it more and more difficult to be without the:
- larger screen,
- better web browser,
- better camera with VGA recording!,
- better battery life: I charge my E90 once or twice every week if I don't use the GPS,
- faster 3G,
- call recording using IVCM: saves me money on not having to pay my operator for this!,
- super-duper sound quality from Nokia HS-39W stereo Bluetooth headset with Sony MDR-EX71 earbuds) and
- more stable OS: the E90 has only crashed twice since I bought it half a year ago and that was before I updated to the latest version.
But with all these things that the E90 does better, it lacks a touchscreen which is a constant pain in the backside, and the Office suite is especially painful to use without a stylus. Try scrolling through a 1000+ line Excel file using only the cursor keys...

People complain a lot about missing video driver and sluggish response on kaiser when refreshing screen or using video, gps etc....Did u notice any of those? I really don't care about video or camera in the phone. It will not be major issue with me.
One more thing - Kaiser is 20 gm heavier than hermes. If i get touch cruise then it will be 60 gm lighter than kaiser. Touch cruise also has the same missing video driver problme.
I never used keyboard on my hermes so I think I should get something without keyboard to slash some weight off my pocket.
How about Eten or atom devices like x800 etc. Are they as good as HTC performance wise?

I haven't had any big issues with the video drivers, but my old PDA phone was quite old and slow (HP iPAQ hw6515). Especially with the new ROM that att just released last week the menu response is really fast, and the video is better, but like I said it still was far better than my old device. I run TomTom Navigator 6 on my Tilt, and have had no problems with video issues. I don't do stuff like YouTube though, so I can't comment on that.
I was just suggesting that it should be something to consider...

I plan on purchasing a brand new 7501. I know a new model came out 7510. I already read the differences between the two and currently leaning towards the 7501, because it is cheaper. I don't see the point of paying 500 dollars more just for added memory and a new OS.
As of now, I can only find Amazon.com selling brand new 7501 for 850 dollars.
Now for my questions:
I know it's a year old, isn't too much to pay 850 for it? If any of you guys know a cheaper store, don't hesitate. Let me know.
I know it comes with WM5 OS, does it have a WM6 official OS?
I read up that radio 1.57.00 is the best, which ROM version is the best?
What is the highest capacity micro SD card does it support?
I have not tried ebay yet, to be honest, I am hesitant to buy expensive stuff off ebay.
Any input is appreciated.

hi there! i see your uni has reached its shelf life... same as mine, I think Im ready to retire it. Im also thinking of getting the athena (dopodu1000) and you're right, the 7510 isnt worth the extra price.
Looking forward to the other athena owners to give inputs to you... as it will help me as well. I suppose the only uni replacement is the Athena hmm?
Good luck
I've had my Athena for ages now and I love the size of the screen and it's power, it's a great device - especially with AP4 ROM, but coming from the Uni you will be disappointed with the keyboard - the one on the uni is great.
Someone here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=391485 is advertising one already pimped up if you're interested - caveat emptor and all that.
The 7501 is a great unit for what I got it for which is to use it for mobile internet access, the large screen is clear and easy to read. The keyboard is ....well to cut it short crap, I tend to get the Caps Lock mode for no reason and it is annoying when you find you have typed a couple of lines without noticing!
I use an external keyboard these days, but leave the inbuilt one attached to offer some additional protection while the device is in the case, I purchased a Piel Frama case in green for my unit as I didn't like the case it was supplied with. Sme users have found this aftermarket case a poor fit, mine seems very well made and I am happy with it.
Overall the device is decent, although heavy internet usage using the 3G connection speed which is fast in use hammers the battery, after a couple of hours use you will be looking for somewhere to plug in a charger.
I used the Uni for quite a while and the Athena seemed to be the next logical step, but it is a large device and you should really try and find one in a shop before purchase to see if you like the size and weight of the unit. It will fit in a pocket, but you need large pockets, the only other accessory I purchased was the 4 in 1 cable for the unit to add the capability of USB connectivity and composite video output - Mike

not to mention the loss of buttons... :C ... actually, I was really holding back for 4 months now. I wanted to know more about its successor before deciding myself, but I can't convince myself to shell out 500 dollars more just for the extra 8 GB and a slightly improved keyboard layout. Now if they improved the processor speed to 700, then maybe they might hook me up for the 7510.

The size does not bother me, coming from an O2 Exec with extended battery, the weight of the Athena might be lighter in comparison.
I plan to use an external BT keyboard and BT mouse, which brand are you using?
I will probably purchase the highest micro SD available too, do you know if it supports SDHC micro SD cards?
I plan to buy a BT headset too. I read the LG HBM-500 with OLED Display and Vibra works well with it.
I might invest on the HTC 4 in one dongle for presentation purposes too.
===
I just read the differences between 7500, 7501, 7510 : http://www.htc.com/www/product.aspx?id=474
Does this mean the 7501 has no second camera even though it has WM6? Thus no video conferencing capability?
===
AP is the Athena Project, AP 4.0 is the latest cooked ROM based on the 7510 ROM and is WM6.1 - not official but you'll be waiting a long tome for WM6.1 to be released on the 7500!
The 7501 has no camera as it was intended for the US market where there is no video calling so the front camera was dropped to save costs or so I believe.
The Athena is about the same weight as an O2 Exec with extended battery (subjectively - I just held one in each hand and they feel the same) but the Athena is quite a bit bigger - hence the gorgeous 5" screen
got mine 7501 after almost a year looking, searching, waiting for the new one. the loss of hardware acess to functions was the main point to stay with the 7501 instead of the new one. the additional memory and improved keyboard (how much?, it will keep being an emergency keyboard!). it's big but very handy due to have everything big on screen, easy to track a message, to hit the right place on the screen, just very handy. I'm using on the original leather cover without the magnetic keyboard to save some volume. for small text input the large letters the softkeyboard pull out on the big screen is reasonable enough. for serious work a cheap and thin USB keyboard connected by the 4x1 cable is perfect. there are no other machine like this to fit in between a cell and a laptop. try one and you will find out. i had several others before, last one the Kaiser but the advantage is really a heavy contender for anyone interested in having a powerhorse at pocket.
I know i'll get flamed on this but
I've done extensive research and reading on x750x series and im sold, im sold to the point i bought one and it comes in tomorrow, its x7501 already unlocked. i've scoured this website, i've read up on all that i can, i know all the procedures all i now need to know is what order do i do them in, the radio 1.57 first then the unlocker? is that right, and do i need to use the athenawrapper at all?
is it two steps or three or four, radio unlocker wrapper
or radio wrapper then unlocker or
just radio and unlocker
or radio, unlocker, wrapper, updater?
