I need help putting .cab files and running programs on my Wing - Wing, P4350 General

Hello I am very new to this and i am having trouble putting programs on my wing. I wanted to do the page pool and the iphone theme but i don't know how to put the files on my phone once i downloaded them. I have my phone synced to my laptop. i tried to copy and paste them put when i go to my phone the paste option is not available... i need help an im sorry if i sound dumb. I was able to put battery status on my phone fine, but that was because it installed itself...

If i'm not mistaken, you can just drag them and nothing bad will happen.

In ActiveSync, click the "explore" button, then click "my windows device", go to program files, make a new folder for the respective applications, then copy them there.
You can then run the .cab's from your phone via the File explorer

it still won't let me. when i try to drag the .cab file into the folder the no sign is displayed....

What folder are you trying to drag it into?
Screenshots? Probably unneeded, good to have.

Copy apps to another device

Hey guys.
Was out and about yesturday with my mate who also owns a Universal, and thought we would just fiddle around with them. I had MS Portrait and we wanted to try it out, but he didnt have it installed, and I did. I know you can install the program via a PC, or through a cab. But, what if you dont have these when you are out? I though Cabbackup would do it, however, i have heard that it is not WM5 compatible. So does anyone know of an app that you can copy programs from one device to another?
Any help would be much apprciated
Chris
Hi Trunk_z!
Programs are usually stored in /Program files/Name_of_app/ folder. You can transfer it via bluetooth, create a shortcut and use it.

Assuming it is completely contained within that directory. Wont work if the program installs files to another folder, like Windows, or edits the registry on the device...

Installing separate files...

Hi there, I'm having trouble installing programs that seem to come in loads of separate files. One of them is an XML file and the rest seem to be unopenable/unrecognisable by windows.
Can anyone give me advice on how to install these onto my MPV3100. I've search for Install help but there doesn't seem to be anything specific on how to do it.
Thanks.

I can't be sure but it sounds like you have decompressed a .cab file on your PC before trying to place it on your device. If so that's not the way to do it.
There are in general threetypes of programme/files you can download for WM5
1. ,cab files
2. .exe files
3. .zip files
.cab files you place directly on the device by connecting via active sync using the Explore button on the PC active sync screen. If you have a storage card inserted navigate to that and drop them in there. To run a Cab file just click on it on your device.
.exe files in the main you run on your PC whilst connected via active sync. The programme will automatically instal the programme on the device. Keep an eye on the device there maybe some taps you have to make.
.Zip files in general you extract these on the PC and then you'll see if they are .cabs or .exes and then treat them as above.
Most programmes will then show up under the Start>Programmes listing on the device and you run them from there. Some though may not especially if you chose to install them to storage card. In which case use file explorer programme to navigate to them.
Ultimately you'll want a programme that allows you to create short cuts to them probably on the desktop screen.
Hope this helps

Location of tsk themes???

Hi,just setting up my M700 and need to transfer my themes over.Usually do this by just restoring from sprite backup. However this time I did a complete clean install. Problem is I cant find the normally present themes folder so as for them to appear in the today menu. Usually its in the windows folder but I cant find it.Where can I put them oe where is it located (the're a lot of them in a folder I created called themes) so as to be visable to the device ie usable/selectable as today backscreens? Thanx all.
The .tsk files should be stored in \windows
When you say that you can't see it, do you mean that you can't see \windows in the explorer on your PC when the phone is connected via ActiveSync?
If this is the case, then it might be due to the fact that the \windows folder is hidden and the explorer on your PC is not showing hidden files and folders.
Try also in My Documents.
Thanx for the reply, unfortunately didnt work
@Its : I can see the windows folder in both my trinity and pc
@MacGuy2006 : Have looked in my documents to no avail
Perhaps another way of posing the question would be how or where do I put additional themes so i can use them. I would rather not have them just put in like that in the windows or whatever folder as I'd like to keep them tidy and organised in their own sub-folder called themes. That way I can edit/remove/add them easily. What pathway or tweak if possible could I use to run them off the storage card to save on space?
Thanx again.

You can put the tsk files in the ROOT directory "/" of your miniSD card and WM5 will find them. I do this to save storage on my phone.

ok thanx matterhorn. May have to do that as its proving a pain.Just that I have more than enough space on the trinity itself.just cant get them to be seen
I download the zipped up tsk file to the storage card.
When I upzip it (by double clicking on the new icon shown in my storage card it gives the options of where you want to send it). I send it to the "my dococuments" on my phone. Then when you go into "settings", then "today" screen you'll have a choice of all your new tsk files added to the original ones.

Icon in games

Hi -
This is driving me crazy and I can't find anywhere to answer it (I'm sure it's trivial to most of you).
I copied a game (just the .exe file - not a .cab) into the \program files\games folder. The game icon is in that folder and it runs just fine - from that folder.
How do I get the icon to display whenever I Start/Programs/Games ? I'm guessing that it must be that I did not formally install and register it as a .cab but I am not that familiar with this OS to be sure.
TIA
Thats why it doesnt show up, because it's not installed. One thing you can do is get something like iLauncher and make the .exe a shortcut... and the icon will show up on your today screen.
Thank you! Is there a way to package the .exe in to a .cab file such that it properly registers as a game in to the game folder? Again, let me guess - get an existing .cab file and decipher it and use my .exe instead of the one that's in the .cab? Just a guess.

I have no idea how to make a CAB file... why not just find the game online, download the installer.. install it, and replace the .exe file with yours.
Hmmm.. Not trying to set the cat amoung the pigeons, but I'm not sure you need something installed to have an icon.
A few months back, I downloaded a battleships game that was just an .exe. I copied the exe onto my storage card, then placed a shortcut to it in the Windows/Start Menu/Games folder. When I open the Start > Programs > Games folder the icon showed up nicely.
Sorry, I've got no definitive answer on this, or even anything constructive to add, just concerned that I think you might be heading down the wrong path with the "cab needed" thing.
Ok, cool - I can try that - thanks! Right now it's not on the storage card and the program, not a shortcut is in the games folder in main storage.

I found instructions on how to create a cab file on MSDN (Microsoft Developers Network). Search MDSN for "cab wizard".
As for installing one program, and replacing its exe with another, I'd be careful about doing that - there may be checksums, registry entries, other required system files, etc. which may not play well with the new exe.
In the old days, you could get away with things like that. Today, you don't have a clue what and where a cab file places system entries. There are .ini files, .xml files, etc. involved in a cab file and I wouldn't want to second guess what is supposed to go where. (Open one with winrar and check it out).

Don't know if links like above are permitted - if not - mod please delete and I apologize.

Which OS do you have?
Which ROM are you using?
Which clocks did you try install?
Why didnt you use a proper title, ie descriptive of topic? ("need help" is not a topic title)
what you've done is extracted the cab files.
download them again, take the files that you downloaded and run them on your phone, they might look like zip or .rar files but they aren't they are cab files which you should just place on your sd card an tap to run them.
always install clocks and things to main memory..
hope that helps...
thats what i did but everytime i open the file it keeps taking me to opera
can you give us a link to the thread you downloaded from or attach the files you downloaded to a post in this thread...
also for some reason i cant drag and drop to main memory, always just memory card, i dont get that

thats probably because your selecting the usb storage option when you connect to the pc. if you choose activesync them you can access the device memory....
you don't need to store the cabs in main memory, just install them to main memory when prompted during the installation process....
Rawrscary's Neon Sliders2.zip is the file
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=678863 url
ok the cabs are inside the folders named by colour so if you want the blue one then open up "blue" place the cab on your device and tap on it....
I guarantee you those cabs are fine because I've been using them for a looooong time....
