First, I apologize for the length of this post, but it is necessary in order to explain the problem and hopefully allow a solution to be found. I had a problem that occurred a while ago that I believed to be related to the push e-mail/xpress mail functions on my Cingular 8525. The problem was as follows:
I was encountering very slow program responses across the board one day after having made some changes to the push e-mail settings. At the time, the push e-mail didn't work, but rather, I had to resort to timed updates. The first push would work, but the log showed that all future attempts were rejected (manual retrievals worked fine).
I have a 1GB miniSD card and while trying to figure out what was causing my general slowdown in response, I noticed that the card was filling up, for no apparent reason and no files were being added. I popped the card out and put it back in and everything was fine. After every soft reset of the device, I had to go through this same procedure in order to keep the card from filling up. I eventually decided it had to be something wrong with xpress mail and I uninstalled and reinstalled it, which fixed the problem with the miniSD card filling up. Unfortunately, there was still 250MB of space on the miniSD card that was "missing".
After a tedious process of going through every file and folder on the storage card and verifying file sizes by copying files between the computer and phone (I'm sure there is an easier way, but I couldn't think of one) I found what I believe to be the culprits. On the storage card there are a number of files and folders located in Program Files, Cingular, Xpress Mail Settings folder that cannot be removed, copied, or renamed. The file and folder names are a combination of wingding type characters, gobbledy gook that kind of looks like this +z;n+-+, Iio-0!Bt, and kd0N-E.,Ca. Even the letters I have typed normally here are not the normal forms of the letters, but rather contain tilde's over them or oomlots (umlots? don't remember the spelling), or other foreign language use characters.
If I try to delete the file or folder, I get an error saying that there was a problem deleting the file named [insert file name here]. If I try to rename the file I get an error saying "A file name cannot contain any of the following characters: \/:*?"<>|" even though the name I am using for the renamed file does not contain any of those characters. In addition one of the files says it is 3.50 GB in size and another says it is 1.02 GB, which obviously isn't correct given the fact that the card is only 1GB in total size. All that to say, it appears that I have a plethora of corrupted files that I cannot get rid of.
I have tried deleting them from the computer through the connection to the phone, from the phone itself using file explorer and from the computer using a card reader. I get essentially the same errors every time.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.
Just as tedious, but have you thought of copying the good ones with the correct file structure to PC. Reformat card and then put back the good ones?
Mike
Reformatting
I will give that a try.
I’ve been using the following soft that deletes any file www.pathtoolong.com. It is not free, but it is good.

hi,
this may seem silly but i cannot seem to back my SD card up (in case of any failure)
i'm not too sure if this is the case however, i cannot seem to copy my installed software directories which are installed on my SD??? (they all have a default ending of say...
BetaPlayer.
eWallet.
Pocket Controller.
buttonMax. <<-- notice the FULLSTOP?
all the other directories copy fine except for these folders.
is anybody having any issues copying ALL files from their SD card?
is there any software that can full backup the SD card to the computer?
ie. similar to SPRITE backup?? or can SPRITE even do this? how do you set it?
Hi
Strange...
Maybe the filesystem on card is screwed up.
Try creating directories (on PC) manually (with the same names) and then copy files from inside(s).
If you succeed this way, format the SD and copy all data back.
Good luck.
I had a similar problem some time back, with those '.'s appearing after some of the directories, and not being able to do much about them, except through a card reader connected to the PC (and sometimes not even then).
eventually i had to reformat the whole card to get it working again, using CNetX's Flash Format, which also has a utility to check and try to fix cards. you can check it out here. http://www.cnetx.com/format/
Google for a freeware product called MobSync. The website is mainly in Japanese but the product is in (pidgeon) English. MobSync can sync. any directory on the PC with any on the device, one way or both ways.
I have it set to sync my Storage and Storage Card to my PC on each connect. It doesn't handle files which are too large, has the odd spelling error and has some minor issues with AS4 but as a fall back mechanism it is excellent.
Note: it doesn't convert files when it copies them - again this is a minor issue and there is a shareware product there that seems to do this.
hi i'm not too sure what you mean when you say file conversion from PC to PDA or PDA to PC?
does this matter?

It can matter but it's not a major issue. For example if you pull a Pocket Word file over via ActiveSync it is converted on the way and becomes a Word/WordPad document at the PC end, this doesn't happen with MobSync.
If all you are looking to do is preseve the data from your Storage and Storage Card, it will serve the purpose just fine.
Is it me, or can this forum be a bit hard to search? (using "" or AND doesn't work??) I KNOW I've seen more than one topic on this but I cant find it for the life of me and I'm not getting refined results.
Just encountered that problem where the Wizard suddenly makes a new Storage Card folder and renames the original one "Storage Card2". The new folder has 2 folders to hold mail attachments and a folder for PIE History.
I can see and use all for the files on the Storage Card2 (all of my movies and music and what not) but the associated programs are now looking for them in the new Storage Card folder.
How can I revert this? I can't delete the new and rename the original with the device docked. Getting sharing violation errors..
Anyone have this problem?
Thanks in advance!
Ok so I fixed it....
I took out my SD card.
From File Explorer on the device, I was able to rename the "Storage Card" that was on the Device to "Old". If you now try to delete it, you'll still get a cannot delete Index error.
I did a soft reset and was then able to delete the "Old" folder. I got "system fil" warnings, but it allowed me to delete the whole folder.
I then inserted my SD card, which immediately showed up as "Storage Card", the way it's supposed to.
My programs are now looking for their files on "Storage Card" and finding them there.
If anyone knows why this happens, feel free to pitch in....
I found that this occurred with me if I did any hacks to put internet explorer temp files, Omega One's Journal Bar files or email attachments to the storage card. I expect is was one of the first two that does it on start up and it was rather upsetting at first until you firgure out what to do about it. I've since unapplied those hacks and it hasn't happened again.

the other day i added about 30 songs to my memory card in mp3 format and now all of the sudden, my windows media player wont lrecogize the card to add the songs to the library... ive tried restarting, soft resetting, putting it in and taking it out. nothing is working. any help?
I have the same issue on my TyTN...
really frustrating but I found a workaround: browse the storage and delete the hidden folder MSMETADATA, then try to update media player library.
You won't find such folder using the file explorer provided with WM5: you must use an enhanced file explorer such as Resco one in order to view hidden and system files.
This was a fixed inanother subject and it worked for me, as I had the same problem as you.[/quote]
I just came across the same tip but you can use the built-in file explorer - just set it to show all files and the folder will appear.
Cool, works for me, but what is at fault here? Before I learned of this trick, when i went to update library without deleting this folder it took the tytn an age to add files, in the meantime all free memory on my microsd was filled. The only way to reclaim this space was to back up everything i wanted to keep, format the card then copy everything back on.??
Workaround
I have been looking into this for about 3 weeks and I am now 95% sure it is because the storage card is full when WMPlayer tries to write its DRM / Metadata to the card. Deleting the MSMETADATA folder is only part of the fix because it frees up space but it will continue to fail. It is still a bug and HTC should fix it up but the workaround it is to leave some space on the card, i.e. don't fill it full of music. I am trialling WMplayer 11 Beta on the PC and it has an option to leave some space free when syncing. Seems to be working fine. For me, this 'feature' is one of the most frustrating things about the device so if you are suffering too then I hope this helps
i dont think it is a strorage issue because it happend to me i have a 1gb micrisd card i used up about 300 to 400mb and it did the same to me when i went to add the files to the lib it found the songs but wouldnt add them it only added the ones from the internal hdd i deled every thing off the card and put it back on i havent had a prob with is since but glad to know if it does happen againg i can just del that folder
this might even happen your card has some error.
it happened to me last time, when i bought first my hermes and tried to install the WM5Storage. Theres a huge incompatibility and my microSD developed some FAT errors causing read/write issues. Once i removed WM5Storage and freshly formatted (make sure you backup) the microSD, thinks ran smoothly.
just a bit of info for you dont know if its just mine but when i had that problem and i tryed adding files to the lib it took ages so i removed the sd card and put it back it and i got a this card is write protected message
so maybe the prob could be caused by removing the card while the phone it trying to accsess it
yer its just happened to my tytn again am going to take a more detailed look at the folder as deleting it does seem to work there must be away create a fix ill let you all know if i find any thing
Hi @ all,
since a few days most of my memory card directories disapperaed. There are only the My Documents folder (which is empty, too) and a TEMP folder I created left on the card.
Although I searched for some threads like this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=294324 all attempts failed.
The space on the card is still occupied and when re-installing programms a new Program directory is created with the same name as the dissapeared one. I have one program when the installer claimed to remove the previous version first before re-installation. So it seems to find something (but I assume in Windows directory or registry).
How will I get the dissappeared folders back? Is there any other chance than formating the SD card and re-installing all programs?
I'm using bepe's cooked German WM6 V0.96 (the last one) and a 2 GB miniSD-Card. It worked quite well since a year now...
Thanks for help,
TC

... y lo cagaste, me temo.
trinity, for some reason, spoils the FAT and reestablishes it with new data. the FAT is like a directory of "where to find what on disk".
as yout fat doesn't work properly, especially it doesn't show off the used sectors or clusters, all new storage will overwrite and destroy this way part of your old data.
so if this happens, remove inmediately the sd-card, put it into your PC card reader and pass it trough file appropiate rescue programs and you'll mostly find almoust all files.
so take a breath, download file rescue pgm's to your PC (some work better, others have many options, others ...) and have a try.
after the rescue, format the SD in your PC.
mine is just passing the rescue :-( and it's rescueing about 1600 files yet

I have just tried to replicate your problem. All seems fine. I have at least 20 apps installed and have no problem.
I copied a large amount of text from one word mobile document to another and saved as different file name.
I would check with something like SK tools: 1. the current memory and 2. the temp files.
I just tried this with an existing word file and copied all the text and pasted it back a dozen times (making about 200kbytes) and it saved instantly.
