assisted gps - JAMin, XDA Neo, S200 General

ive been reading about assisted GPS usint the phones built in GPS receiver. was wondering what programs are available to make use of it? any ideas?
thanks

prophet = no gps build in!

hmmm
no what i heard was that, every phone has a gps locater in it, this can be used to locate the phone using normal network antenas, there doesnt need to be a specific gps receiver in the phone,
maybe i have been wrongly informed :d

I've just been reading in another post about this kind of software : http://www.navizon.com/
hope it helps.

How To get GPS working

can anybody tell me how & what is the step to get the GPS works ?
thanks..
Put some GPS software on your Ameo and point it to COM4.
what are some of the best gps software for ameo?
I would think google maps with the ability to real time track your location would be great. Anyone try that?
Tomtom Navigator 6.
Coz it's free.
Edit - I in no way condone the use of pirated software, and I'll no doubt burn in hell for my sins....
Dopod U1000
Hey!
I have an Dopod U1000, which is the Advantage/X7500/Athena but on the Asian market.
THe first and biggest problem I have is that the GPS is not working. I cannot get a GPS-fix, but I have contact with the actual GPS-unit.
It doesnt matter where I am or for how long I wait - I have never got a fix and once every now and then I get 1 or 2 satellites with very bad connection - but never a fix.
I talked to HTC about this and they didnt know anything about it.
I then, when I asked around, got a weird answer from a company here in Sweden. They guessed that since U1000 is for the Asian market they may somehow have "preprogrammed GPS" information, so that they use Asian satellites. Sounds very strange to me - as far as I know they are not geo-stationary so the satellites goes around and thus there are not specific Asian satellites.
Anyways, anyone know about this issue? Suggestions?
Thx!

the Global Positioning System is global, and should work anywhere on the globe !! apart from in war zones (and near US military bases) where the signal is sometimes deliberately degraded so enemies cant use satellite guided missiles.

This is also a big problem in Germany - it's not possible to get it working with Google Maps. We tried everything (also to disable the GPS-Splitter and use Com5 which helps with some programs, but not with Google Maps).
So we gave up for the moment waiting for an update (maybe Athena, maybe Google).

Got mine working in TT6 by doing:
Other NMEA GPS Receiver
GPS Baud Rate: 4800
Com4
Is this what everyone else is doing ?
is the Baud rate correct?
Its quite chuggy/slow compared to tt6 on universal. i.e. 2-3fps as opposed to almost smooth on universal
Also, is it possible to change that tomtom icon thats on the today screen ? its so ugly and blocky - really detracts from the otherwise lovely Ameo screen
Mine is working great. By the way, i'm using MapKing10. When setting the port just select auto and the software should be able to detect the port in use. My unit can lock on into the satellite signal in less then 5s, thats impressive.
Hi
Does anyone know where to get a copy of the aforementioned TT6 for free? I had just bought TT navigator 6 with GB + Western Europe for my Mio A701 about 3 months ago but was gutted to find I couldnt transfer the licence to my new Ameo so i sold the boxed product with the Mio.
Anyone know where I can get one (strictly for "backup" purposes of course).
Cheers
Very easily found on torrent sites.
I won't give a link here as I assume that would be frowned on by the management....
ok, will have a look. not that familiar with all this torrent stuff!
ta
GPS Port
I looked in the registry and I found that com 5 is the official port. Strange enough com 4 and 5 work.
Getting GPS working
I purchased an A701 last week and had one hell of a time tring to get TT6 to work, even though MM worked fine. It appears that some software originally designed for ealier MS does not like Com4. I loaded a program called VisualGPSse, a freedownload, and set that to com 4 and bingo TT6 spang into life. Before using TT now I lauch that small app and it works fine. I,ll try and find the link if Google doen't find it for you.
ps. Does anyone know of an app that will allow me to use hands free, my Mio Rom R65 seems duff in this area.
getting GPS to work
I've installed my vehicle navigation software (copilot live v5) without any problem twice.
But when I tried to instal another GPS-based application called MobileGolfScorer, the system was simply unable to sense any satellite signal. Not only that, the system became extremely slow to the point of freezing up and not responding.
Then, I read about the post that says com5 is the default, so I said to myself may be I should use com5 instead of 4 in my start>setting>GPS.
After changing to com5, my MobileGolfScorer was able to recognise signal although the signal was extremely weak. Also, it was no longer freezing up. I thought that may be I've at least solved the problem and the weak signal may be due to the fact that I was not directly under the open sky.
The new problem is that after changing to com5, my copilot stopped working! When trying to reset GPS within copilot, it just said that I either did not have the GPS connected, or I was having the wrong com selection and/or baud rate. I tried all possible combinations of com and baud rate (including letting it find automatically) but unfortunately the results were the same.
Then I thought to myself may be copilot can only use com4. Since vehicle navigation is a more important application to me, I may have to sacrifice MobileGolfScorer until the problem is resolved. So I went to start>setting>GPS and reverted to com 4.
I then tried to get copilot to work but now it would not. MGS also would not work. So now I have two GPS applications that are not able to sense any signal. I can see the gsm led orange light(GPS) and green light(phone) alternating, which means that the GPS is supposed to be working, althoug the orange light disappears by itself after a while. The thing is, with or without the orange light, the software were not able to sense any GPS signal.
What do all these suggest? Any idea???
Chapter 2 to my story:
Since I'm also experiencing MD lost cluster problems, I had wonder if it could be that some system files used by the copilot program is corruptted. So I decided to hard-reset the unit and reinstall everything from scratch again. The first thing that I did after hard resett was to instal MobileGolfScorer. It did not work when I used com4 and baud rate 4800. Could not detect any GPS signal although the orange light was blinking. Then I installed Copilot live Pocket PC v5. This software has no problem detecting the signal right away. In my mind, it seems to suggest that the reason for copilot to have stopped working could be due to file corruption, while MobileGolfScorer still for some reason could not detect it. What I also failed to understnad is why for a very brief period it did detect very week signal (see chapter 1 above).
My fear: Once I was so confident that com4 and baud rate 4800 solves all problems. Now I'm less sure what is going on. If you're lucky, it works; if you not lucky it does'nt seems to work. You could be doing exactly the same thing entering the same setting but you could get different results. Is it due to file corruption? Why does it get corrupted so easily?
Let's hope some smarter mind could figure this out for us.
Its all about the sucky comport management in windows.
If one app is accessing a com port, no others can.
If windows GPS management is accessing the GPS on com5, then you shouldnt connect to com5 yourself. The whole point of the windows management is that the software port (often port4) it creates is meant to be able to be read by multiple programs.
However, most programs dont seem to like the software port. Eg, googlemaps.
I just turned off the MS GPS management and only use apps that directly attatch to com5, and only one app at a time.

How do I download the GPS log?

I can't seem to locate a relevant thread so I thought I would just ask the question cold...
Is there a way to download the GPS log from my D810? I know this question is probably not limited to this model but it's what I got. I was travelling off-road on the week-end and need to see fairly accurately where the GPS log of the trip was in relation to the map. I know there are programs that will let me overlay the data on the map, I just don't know how to get it out of the phone in the first place.
BTW, I was using Tomtom Navigator 6 if that helps.
NOOBie question !!!! dont flame plz
this is not an ANSWER to your question rather a question on my part..
after getting the device .. i upgraded to the wm6 lsvw version..
the wiki said it has gps enabled
but for the life of me i cant figure out how to get it to work..
ive tried gmaps and gps tuner and they cant find the gps..
is there a particular way to get it TURNed ON
i tried htc site for the user manual but in vain!
so plz help
thanks
Sorry, I can't help you with that. I'm still on WM5 but I just used Trinityhacks to switch my GPS on.
I think this might be what you are looking for...
http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/
To clarify on both points- TomTom doesn't record GPS tracks. Co-Pilot Live and iGO 2006 both have options to do so.
GPS doesn't need 'turning on' if you have a GPS enabled ROM (as far as I know, all the cooked WM6 ROMs are GPS enabled, and WM5 Radio ROMs from 1.30 onwards are GPS enabled- as long as the last 2 digits of teh Radio ROM are .11 , GPOS is enabled)
[Edit- some of the new WM6 cooked ROMs don't update the Radio Stack, so you may need to do this in addition to the main ROM update. Radio ROM 1.38 seems the most stable, but 1.41 is OK. Avoid 1.40! ]
GPS aware applications will automatically turn the GPS receiver on as needed, as long as they point to the correct COM port.
For the Trinity/P3600 this is COM9 and the Baud rate is 57600. You must make sure that when you first use GPS you need a clear view of the sky, preferably outside, to allow the chip to download the very weak signals transmitted by the satellites. Once you have a first fix, subsequent fixes are much quicker.

That's GREAT! Thanks korben.
Now I notice that the website makes reference to a Tomtom .pgl (navigator log) file but NeilM says Tomtom doesn't record tracks. I am confused - does Tomtom log GPS routes or not? If so, where is it on my system?

Iguidance problems

This software (iguidance) has some great feathers, but every time I try to tell it to take me to my destination it tells me it is waiting for gps signal. I then try to make sure take Iguidance sees my gps when I do the auto detect (gps port/Baud Checker) and it see it, and it still tells me it is waiting for the signal. Then when I try to detect my gps again sometimes it tells me that it "No Gps Found, please reconnect your GPS receiver." I thinking some how it is keep loseing the gps signal. Does anyone have this same problem or how do I fix this. " I have the cingular 8525" or maybe someone can gave me a better away how to set this up from the beginning. "maybe i set the gps up wrong, can some one help) thank You!
read here and see if it helps you.
also what kind of gps receiver do you have? have you tried following its manufacturer's instructions on how to pair it?
i experienced the same problem and my problem was gps receiver related. had to RMA it back and have not had any pairing problems eversince.
i have the Bluetooth GPS Receiver - GlobalSat BT-359, i will read that link hopefully this works because i hate paying cingular $10 per mouth for the telenav, (that is a real good program, I just wish i didn't have to pay for it)
EDIT: that is what i did the first time, but i guess you have to have it on the highest port com. Thanks for the info. It works good. What do you think is the best Nav software.
really depends on what suits you. i too have iG4. i chose it over the others because of its good features. i.e. TTS, tells you which side of the road your destination is and also can be used on your laptop.
however, good as it is, iG4 too has issues. so this is something you might consider.

GPS on Hermes without receiver. Possible?

Hi guys n girls,
I'm kinda new here and I have a question I've been dying to ask since I got hold of my HTC hermes. I'm currently using Vodafone's version of HTC Hermes, which is the V1605.
Is it possible for HTC Hermes to use GPS navigation without an external GPS receiver such as a bluetooth device? I learnt that HTC Hermes has no GPS chipset so it will definitely need a receiver, but I'm just curious and I wanna confirm. Thanks
Afaik, it got a GPS Chipset but no antenna

thanks for the clarification.
so, it will need a receiver to act like an antenna?
I'm not sure if you search for GPS or looked at the Wiki on the Hermes but its been covered a few times. The only thing you can really do is get a bluetooth GPS receiver or something along those lines.

I use a Holox bt-321 GPS receiver, works fine!
I was going to link to an ebay auction for one but its possibly the ONLY day when there isnt an auction for one!
I bought here from a user a Holux M-1000. Works fine and without any problems.
Give Navizon a go - > http://www.navizon.com/
its a virtual GPS for phones without GPS, Goes on Phone Cell info and Wifi AP Signals, you have to use wifi but it does pinpoint where you are better with wifi on
also out puts the data via a com port so you can use Satnav an other GPS enabled apps with it
Garmin GPS 10
I'm using an older Garmin GPS 10 that I purchased a few years ago, but it stills works great. It is rechargeable and the battery seems to last forever. I also using the Beta version of Garmin's Mobile XT, which gives my 8525 the same look and feel as "modern" GPS-only devices.
Some of the cool "toys" the software uses is:
2-D or 3-D map view
PeerPoints (sending GPS coords via SMS or MMS)
Local gas prices near you
Real time traffice
Weather
POIs ( you can have up to 4,000 waypoints/favorites/locations)
Voice prompts
Hotels.com info
etc.
Of course, some of the features depends on whether or not you have a data plan or WiFi access. I also like it because it is very small, works via bluetooth and is very accurate. I also use BeelineGPS because I also like to Geocache.

P.S. The current version of my GPS is the Garmin Mobile 10 for PDAs/Laptops
im using a "54 channel Holox" (Fake Holux) but i havent seen a quicker connecting device

Just got a touch/elf, GPS?

So I just got an Elf. I bought it new off of ebay unlocked. I'm using T-Mobile but this phone just has straight WM 6.1, no Tmobile software.
So I was able to put the T-Mobile Settings in and the internet works fine. I downloaded Google Maps and it will give my location but it’s always a bit off from where I actually am. Like maybe it’s getting my location from the cell tower and not the GPS?
I downloaded some other GPS programs like SportyPal and it will say configuring GPS and then just sit there. Do I need to do something to turn the GPS on?
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Elf
it's specs don't mention gps at all
what makes you think it got gps?
Here it says that it has:
I think it is a external Bluetooth GPS receiver.

External bluetooth GPS reciever.
External means that its outside of the device, and Bluetooth-powered is how it interfaces with it. You'll need to purchase another piece of kit to enable Bluetooth on an Elf - it is not internally native.
