can anybody tell me how & what is the step to get the GPS works ?
thanks..
Put some GPS software on your Ameo and point it to COM4.
what are some of the best gps software for ameo?
I would think google maps with the ability to real time track your location would be great. Anyone try that?
Tomtom Navigator 6.

Dopod U1000
Hey!
I have an Dopod U1000, which is the Advantage/X7500/Athena but on the Asian market.
THe first and biggest problem I have is that the GPS is not working. I cannot get a GPS-fix, but I have contact with the actual GPS-unit.
It doesnt matter where I am or for how long I wait - I have never got a fix and once every now and then I get 1 or 2 satellites with very bad connection - but never a fix.
I talked to HTC about this and they didnt know anything about it.
I then, when I asked around, got a weird answer from a company here in Sweden. They guessed that since U1000 is for the Asian market they may somehow have "preprogrammed GPS" information, so that they use Asian satellites. Sounds very strange to me - as far as I know they are not geo-stationary so the satellites goes around and thus there are not specific Asian satellites.
Anyways, anyone know about this issue? Suggestions?
Thx!

Ted

the Global Positioning System is global, and should work anywhere on the globe !! apart from in war zones (and near US military bases) where the signal is sometimes deliberately degraded so enemies cant use satellite guided missiles.

This is also a big problem in Germany - it's not possible to get it working with Google Maps. We tried everything (also to disable the GPS-Splitter and use Com5 which helps with some programs, but not with Google Maps).
So we gave up for the moment waiting for an update (maybe Athena, maybe Google).

Got mine working in TT6 by doing:
Other NMEA GPS Receiver
GPS Baud Rate: 4800
Com4
Is this what everyone else is doing ?
is the Baud rate correct?
Its quite chuggy/slow compared to tt6 on universal. i.e. 2-3fps as opposed to almost smooth on universal
Also, is it possible to change that tomtom icon thats on the today screen ? its so ugly and blocky - really detracts from the otherwise lovely Ameo screen
Mine is working great. By the way, i'm using MapKing10. When setting the port just select auto and the software should be able to detect the port in use. My unit can lock on into the satellite signal in less then 5s, thats impressive.
Hi
Does anyone know where to get a copy of the aforementioned TT6 for free? I had just bought TT navigator 6 with GB + Western Europe for my Mio A701 about 3 months ago but was gutted to find I couldnt transfer the licence to my new Ameo so i sold the boxed product with the Mio.
Anyone know where I can get one (strictly for "backup" purposes of course).
Cheers
Very easily found on torrent sites.
I won't give a link here as I assume that would be frowned on by the management....
ok, will have a look. not that familiar with all this torrent stuff!
ta
GPS Port
I looked in the registry and I found that com 5 is the official port. Strange enough com 4 and 5 work.
Getting GPS working
I purchased an A701 last week and had one hell of a time tring to get TT6 to work, even though MM worked fine. It appears that some software originally designed for ealier MS does not like Com4. I loaded a program called VisualGPSse, a freedownload, and set that to com 4 and bingo TT6 spang into life. Before using TT now I lauch that small app and it works fine. I,ll try and find the link if Google doen't find it for you.
ps. Does anyone know of an app that will allow me to use hands free, my Mio Rom R65 seems duff in this area.
getting GPS to work
I've installed my vehicle navigation software (copilot live v5) without any problem twice.
But when I tried to instal another GPS-based application called MobileGolfScorer, the system was simply unable to sense any satellite signal. Not only that, the system became extremely slow to the point of freezing up and not responding.
Then, I read about the post that says com5 is the default, so I said to myself may be I should use com5 instead of 4 in my start>setting>GPS.
After changing to com5, my MobileGolfScorer was able to recognise signal although the signal was extremely weak. Also, it was no longer freezing up. I thought that may be I've at least solved the problem and the weak signal may be due to the fact that I was not directly under the open sky.
The new problem is that after changing to com5, my copilot stopped working! When trying to reset GPS within copilot, it just said that I either did not have the GPS connected, or I was having the wrong com selection and/or baud rate. I tried all possible combinations of com and baud rate (including letting it find automatically) but unfortunately the results were the same.
Then I thought to myself may be copilot can only use com4. Since vehicle navigation is a more important application to me, I may have to sacrifice MobileGolfScorer until the problem is resolved. So I went to start>setting>GPS and reverted to com 4.
I then tried to get copilot to work but now it would not. MGS also would not work. So now I have two GPS applications that are not able to sense any signal. I can see the gsm led orange light(GPS) and green light(phone) alternating, which means that the GPS is supposed to be working, althoug the orange light disappears by itself after a while. The thing is, with or without the orange light, the software were not able to sense any GPS signal.
What do all these suggest? Any idea???
Chapter 2 to my story:
Since I'm also experiencing MD lost cluster problems, I had wonder if it could be that some system files used by the copilot program is corruptted. So I decided to hard-reset the unit and reinstall everything from scratch again. The first thing that I did after hard resett was to instal MobileGolfScorer. It did not work when I used com4 and baud rate 4800. Could not detect any GPS signal although the orange light was blinking. Then I installed Copilot live Pocket PC v5. This software has no problem detecting the signal right away. In my mind, it seems to suggest that the reason for copilot to have stopped working could be due to file corruption, while MobileGolfScorer still for some reason could not detect it. What I also failed to understnad is why for a very brief period it did detect very week signal (see chapter 1 above).
My fear: Once I was so confident that com4 and baud rate 4800 solves all problems. Now I'm less sure what is going on. If you're lucky, it works; if you not lucky it does'nt seems to work. You could be doing exactly the same thing entering the same setting but you could get different results. Is it due to file corruption? Why does it get corrupted so easily?
Let's hope some smarter mind could figure this out for us.
Its all about the sucky comport management in windows.
If one app is accessing a com port, no others can.
If windows GPS management is accessing the GPS on com5, then you shouldnt connect to com5 yourself. The whole point of the windows management is that the software port (often port4) it creates is meant to be able to be read by multiple programs.
However, most programs dont seem to like the software port. Eg, googlemaps.
I just turned off the MS GPS management and only use apps that directly attatch to com5, and only one app at a time.

Well, first off let me say I have just upgraded from iGuidance 2 to iGuidance 3. iG 3 is about 8 MB bigger than iG2 and therefore I had to install it on my mini SD card. It works perfectly fine, loads seems to be just as fast (since maps are stored on the mini SD with either program. Anyway, my problem is basically that the program works great, but when the lady comes on telling me when to turn, lets say in 2 miles...it is REEEEAAAALLLY slow and exhagerated. She goes like, Turn.........left..........in........two........miles...... I recently started overclocking my 8125 to 260 MHz to see if it was a speed issue, but no change as far as the sound goes. Any ideas?
turn off your internet connection and you should be OK
DNO
IGuidance 3
Runs fine for me, at stock speed, program and maps on the mini-SD. Maybe it is the overclocking?

I have Iguidance 3.0. Now I need the GPS module.
Which GPS module do you all use? What is the best now? Holux, Globalsat? or some other.

i use the Rikaline GPS-6033 Bluetooth from buygpsnow.com its $89
picks up 32 sats works indoors and its fast at cold startup locks on to sats
in under 30 seconds i use tomtom and iguidance 3

I tried it at stock speeds and overclocked speeds, it still did the same thing. I'll try turning off my ActiveSync with my Exchange later today when I'm going on a small road trip and see if that solves the problem.

I use the Holux GPSlim 360 I think it is. The number may be off though. It's uber small and I just throw it in the center console in my car and use it when necessary. Cold start is about 30-45 seconds.
The Rikaline GPS-6033 does not show to be SirfIII. I thought this is the latest technology to get. Is this a more recent technology or is the SirfIII over blown?
I brought this to the attention of iNavcorp, makers of iGuidance, a few weeks ago. This was their reply:
"Our programmers are currently looking into this issue. In the mean time, while turning off the phone will resolve the issue, based on our knowledge, you should be able to simply disable the gprs (wireless data connection) function on your PPC phone which will also resolve the slow voice issue, but this way you will still have phone access."
I had told them that turning off the phone solves the problem. Anyway, they are aware, and I am hopeful that they will fix this in an upcoming patch.
p.s. DNO's answer was right on...

It is the GPSlim 236 and it is a great unit! I love mine.
The voice on mine works great, I could not get it to instal to the SD, I had to install the CAB there, and then run that to install the actual program to the phone. My problem is that the maps haven't been updated with streets that have been made in the last few years, and the shopping POIs arn't that great.
I have a Houlix 268 slim (I Think thats the model), and it randomly loses connection, so I have to power-cycle it and restart IG3, for it to regain connection.
Also every once and a while it does a wierd click sound when I'm slowing down.

I did notice this was the issue this weekend. Is there a "quick" way to disable GPRS? I guess i'll keep an eye on iNavcorps website.
Turn it off from the comm manager. Mine works fine while I am using BT for my headset and on the phone talking.
Do iGuidance do maps for Europe? THey seem to have discontinued their european product; if I can get the europe map from v.2.12 will it work with v.3.0?
Cheers.

Here's an idea: try not stealing.
i don't nomaly steal but as i don't know how stable tomtom works on my phone or how stable bluetooth gps works on my phone i am reluctant to spend 80quid to find out.
works very well, you have to config your exec to get TOMTOM to work with bluetooth gps( you can find that on here somewhere).
It works fine, but slower than on a QVGA screen device.
I have used v5 and v6 on AKU 2, 3, and now Crossbow ROMs, it works fine on the Universal, so you can buy it without worrying.

You don't actually have to config anything if you have the TomTom GPS, it turns on BT itself, and finds it.
If you have a non TomTom BT GPS, simply pair it, and select an outgoing COM port, then when you fire up TomTom, tell it that it's a BT GPS on whatever port you chose.
All very easy.
cool, that is the kind of information that i was looking for, does anyone here use the live trafic update service? does it work well and divert you automaticly and how much does it cost to subscribe?
cheers
If I can remember, you and get 1 free month to try. Traffic is not always update!!!!!
It's good if there's a large incident, but in my experience you usually get stuck in things before they hit your device, and you see the road signs on motorways and things warning you anyway.
I stopped the subscripton, and just reroute myself if I see warnings, or hear something on the radio.
I am using TomTom 6 on my Exec now.
Previously used Navigon MN|5 which required *LOTS* of memory, so TomTom was a nice refreshment with its 7-9 MB memory trace.
Had problems setting up Bluetooth receiver. It wasn't showing up in the port list when I selected Bluetooth one. What I did was: added an incoming serial port, run TomTom and set port to this one (did not work yet!) then closed it and removed the port; after that TomTom just worked straight away At this point, an attempt to change port led to inability to get out of port selection, and you're buggered again. I'm sure that's some glitch, but I solved it anyway. May be there's a neater way of doing this.
But the software itself was good and stable, does what's on the tin, copy a directory to your card and you get Full Postcode navigation (very useful when finding businesses and not residential homes), and POI Warning function is built in now -- a *major* plus, never really got time to make POIWarner work properly. Tunnel mode -- progressive marker movement when lost GPS signal in a tunnel -- and that won my heart.
I do understand people's need to try BEFORE you buy, not after your money is tied up with some dud product and you get no refund. Go Trial, go.
Well in this case I'm pleased with TomTom 6 and its services. You can easily get a camera database each month from the Net and probably can live without Traffic service, but for me £33 a year doesn't seem too big a dent in my wallet - compared to £170-200 TMC receivers currently available on the market.

AlanJC: Have you tried TT6 under WM6 and did all work well? Also, was TT6 happy after you upgraded the ROM - did you have any problems with TT6 thinking the Device Code had changed, thereby needing to re-register the software?
I have installed a (legitimate since you ask) copy of tomtom NAVIGATOR 6 onto my MDA Vario II. The 4+ Mb programme resides in main memory and the Western_Europe map and everything else is on the 2Gb Sandisk Micro SD card. I have a Fuzion SiRF starIII bluetooth GPS receiver. tomtom's US website says the hardware and software are compatible, the UK site does not. The programme runs very slowly (it's not smooth as I have seen demonstrated on a Mio, which had a 312Mhz processor, but is stilted). Sometimes the machine locks up and I have to press the 'OK' button. When browsing the map, the machine struggles to process the picture. I ensure that there are no running programmes. What is the cause, please? Could it be that the hardware and software are incompatible?
just try to flash aku 3.3 to your vario. it will make ur phone work smooth and will not hang at all. then u will be able to run tomtom 6 perfectly
Rather than risk aku 3.3 issues I suggest you are probably right and there is soe sort of hardware issue. I have navigator 6 and TOMTOM BT receiver and hav absolutely no issues at all
I use TT6 on a daily basis and I can say that under WM5 AKU2.3 it used to hang very often when putting post code. I ran ok. After flashing AKU3.3 it works flawlessly. The same with WM6. Now it also seems to run a little bit faster.

What you need to do is disable all the POI's except the speed cameras. Mine did exactly the same thing. You can still navigate to the POI's, they just don't show up as you're driving past.
Cheers.
ok... maybe you guys who have already told him to upgrade his phone to aka3... somthing or other do know best BUT...
could you please say what version of tomtom 6 you have. (there are at least 3 versions i have used)
to find this
load tomtom
on the navigation window tap the section of the screen that shows GPS signal strenth this will load the route summary window.
in here below the right hand side pannel that again show the GPS signal strength it should say the version number 6.XXX
please let me know what versino you have... i have found varying levels of stability and performace with diff versions of tomtom.. might be as simple as a different tomtom build to resolve your issues.

yep this is the same on mine, disabled all but a few POIs and no or very rare freezes. if it does freeze up hit the hangup button and relaunch.
there was some hope with the Version 7 tomtom out soon that there would be a fix for the problem.

ok. i have had pretty good results with 6.0.30 but it might be worth you trying the 6.0.20 version and see how you get on.
at least you will loose the anoying mute on start bug. (the phone sees a data connection and asuumes its a phone calls so starts in mute.)

Hi there,
i am running tt7 on my Asus P535 with WM 6.
I have this problem:
TomTom is always about 200 meters behind my actual position. I think this is so because of an not well resolution. Only if I drive very slow (about 30 km/h) tomtom shows my position correct.
I tried all versions. Repack 3 qvga, qvga... 7.450,.. 7.541...but each version came up with the same result.
Is there a possibility to stop this annoying lag ? Or do I have to cope with it. Did anyone else notice this , also?
With TT 6 (6.032) this problem never appeared.
If you're using a bluetooth reciever it sounds like it hasn't got many channels. More channels better reception - more accurate.
If the phone has gps built in then check the position of the phone in the car. It needs a clear signal to work properly. under the windscreen is best, not on the seat beside you.
Otherwise it sounds like memory problem. Other apps using ram and limiting how much the gps program can use. though most of the time when I had that problem it just kept jumping all over the place.
You have to slow down, you're driving too fast
You can also try turning off points of interest and any info you don't need. Even street names can make it laggy.

I don't think it's Tomtom's versions problem... it's the GPS signals likely
If you don't get a good signals or number of Sats yo will be far from your real position.
Consider if there are alot of obstacles which would cause or interfere with the signals:
- Tall buidlings, trees, objects
- under ground car park, buidling
- Metals (depends)
- Raining and not clear sky
- Other devices or in a high EM
- GPS chips got faulty
- Firmware or memory that store calculate functions got problem
- Not enough numbers of Sats
- ...
Hi again,
I don't think it is an GPS Problem.
I have an built-in- GPS- Receiver and I get between 6-11 Satellites.
Another user (he has the Diamond) had this problem, also. But he took the wrong tt7- Version. After using the right one everything was okay.
But it also might be the processor of my P535 ? Might that also be possible?
oh, I got about 18- 20 MB of RAM free

Have you tried using iGo or other GPS apps and experienced similar lag ?
Even on my old Wizard TomTom7 runs without problems.
Have you tried it in another car, or outside your car? Maybe your front window has a special alloy to prevent sun emission. Know this problem of some of my friends, they have had this problem (Mostly on new VW,Audi,BMW i know this problem, maybe other cras have something similar).
Hello,
I tried many other GPS-Systems. Navigon, IGO, MIO,Garmin, tt 6. But this 100-200 m lag appears only with tt 7. And this was all in the same car.
I have no ideas anymore what this might cause this.
I know, my P 535 is not the latest one but it still has got a 520MHz Intel Xscale..
It is not the map, also. I tried 3 different tt 7 maps already..

As was mentioned above by snachez, I believe it's the amount of poi's you have showing on the screen while driving. I had the same problem with about 20 poi's showing. When I turned it down to about 4 poi's, the problem went away, and now it's SMOOTH as silk.
Hope this helps!
Sorry to chip in here. Seems like you all here uses GPS. I just bought a new PDA. MWg Zinc II with built in GPS. As I am living in Singapore, I would like to know is it possible to obtain igo Singapore map for free? GPS maps are very expensive and I would like to know where can I download it and use it as a full version without paying.
Ok, so i installed TomTom navigator 7.450 on my P3600.
The program works fine, i can change settings, add maps,...
The only thing it won't do is find my GPS device. Whenever I want to view the GPS status, it just sais it can't find the GPS device.
Anyone know how to fix this? Or should i just go back to navigator 6...
Help would be greatly appreciated!
Have you flashed it's ROM or Radio?
If so what versions? Earlier Radios didn't have the GPS enabled.
Re
I just have the latest ROM from the HTC website.
Tomtom navigator 6 works fine so i guess there is no support for navigator 7?
Did you remember to point the device at the internal GPS?
It's probably under settings somewhere. usually you select 'Other devices' then look for 'GPS on COM9'. with baud rate 9600.
what do you mean?
when tomtom said i didn't have a device, i selected internal, but it wouldn't do anything...
if it's a general setting, tomtom 6 works, so i guess that's ok there
When I first install TomTom6 On my Trinity I had to manually select which GPS device to use. I select 9600 baud rate and the device 'GPS on COM9'. This was under the 'Other GPS devices' menu. I can only assume you're going to have to tell it which GPS to use. Or it might think you've got an external TomTom bluetooth dongle or something.
I haven't actually got TomTom7 yet, I'm just trying to suggest things it could be.
wow, it worked :|
thanks a million!
Glad I could help.
Now you can do me a favour and tell me how TomTom7 behaves on the Trinity.
How fast does it tend to get a signal?
Is there much of the dreaded GPS lag when you're driving along causing you to miss exits?
I might upgrade if it's any good.
Well, i haven't driven around much using it yet (just went on my motorcycle and had a little spin) but it reacted quite fast.
The first time it took less then a minute to get a signal.
I drove to a friend's place to drop some stuff off and turned off my pda while i was there. When i turned it back on, it almost instantly found my location! (must have saved the positions of the satellites or something)
It works quite fast and even tho there aren't allot of big changes, i noticed it worked allot smoother.
I mainly upgraded so i could use the new maps. I don't know if it's really worth the upgrade when you don't need new maps, but this made my day.
hi,
I to use Tomtom 7, and have used it on various Trinity's .... and it runs flawlessly.
the settings that never fail for me are:
'other NMEA receiver'
baud 4800
GPS on Com 9
my Tomtom version is 7.450 (9028) with UK v7.20.1802 maps
Yep, I used 9800 because of chimpsinties tip. Works flawless until now.
Going on a road trip next week, so I'll notice if it doesn't obey my wishes
Has anyone gotten mapshare to work with Tomtom 7 on Trinity? I just get a message that the device or map isn't supported. Of course, Trinity isn't in the supported devices list... but is there a workaround? I use TT7.450 and map WCE8.35.
i don't use any of the tomtom services, so i wouldn't know

9600? I always thought the recommended baud rate on Trinity was 57600?
Mattster.
Well it works perfectly on 9600 for me and has always done.

Interesting to know. I guess I'll try it and see what happens! To tell you the truth, I'm not even sure what baud rate even does!
Mattster.
Basically by setting the baud rate, you are letting the computer know how many signal's the device is going to be transmitted per second so they can understand each other.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baud
If you set it higher than it needs to be it probably doesn't make any difference, It will just be processing a lot of blank signals and thus possibly wasting effort.
