I've used severall PC programs that sends an webcam feed to the net, and you can see it with a simple browser, anywhere in the world thru internet. It's really good for home security and stuff.
The thing is, I cant see this live feeds in any Pocket Pc Browser Any Thoughts?
Try it using a program called "netfront" instead of the PIE, i use axis cameras, and servers, and have a PPC program just for viewing the cameras it works everytime
John
I've Tried NetFront. and can't see the video feed of any webcam survaeillance prog I've tried.
I wonder if you could imporove your odds by installing Java on your PPC

Hi lovemyxda,
You can try ViewCommander from www.viewcommander.com. There's a compatibility list of cameras there.
I've tried viewing using WiFi and GPRS. Have not try using 3G yet

Hi macsoft,
I've tried using my PPC as a webcam but to no avail.
Since you've succeeded in setting up your PPC as a webcam can you post your procedure here and the software you used.
Many thanks
Hi macsost, I have a Creative Webcam which come with a sorfware enabling it to send Jpeg to the net (like IP camera) . However, I don't know how to use such function. It seems that I have to set FTP ... or so on in order to see my webcam.
Could you kindly advise step by step which procedure I must follow to see my webcam.
There are several apps helping you doing this. but, a better option would be a network cam. they are not that expensive anymore. look @ trust.com
get a second hand axis 2100, and use a program called ACE, Axis camera explorer, we have 7 cameras and a 4 port server here and i check them all the time on my XDA, over WiFi and GPRS
John
yep , BEST solution ! gr8 app for pda and best network cams
Windows Media encoder
I have been using my £7 web cam from Ebuyer and a copy of windows media encoder.
I set the media encoder to use the web cam for video, my soundblaster Audigy with Mic plugged in for sound and then set to broadcast at the best quality it can.
I have been watching my house from next door using my Wifi router and windows media player on my MDA compact.
This is pretty cool, lags about 2 seconds behind the real action.
The good thing is that it broadcasts over the net without set up, you just click the find empty port button and your away!
All my mates have been well impressed, when I get home Im going to try to set up VPN at home, go to my mates house and use my MDA compact through his wifi to connect via the t'intawob.
If its possible I'll post my findings! I cant see why not.
View Commander for pocket PC
I run a Panasonic BB-HCM331 IP camera.
To connect I have attached to a Wireless client device via the ethernet port.
Allocate one of your public IP addresses to the camera this will keep it off your network. Then input this ip address into View Commander and Hey Ho you have a transportable wireless IP cam. Great for watching your garden in the Pub.
Demo available at www.cccamera.co.uk.
Bonus this is Pan Tilt and Zoom. Even works over GPRS
Cheers

a barcode scanner and a webcam... wouldn't that be hilarious?
For the first thing our PDA should pretend to be a USB keyboard and translate the photographed bar code into its numbers.
For the second thing our PDA should pretend to be a USB webcam and instantly stream each picture to the USB port.
You think it's impossible? I don't think so. Softick managed to have the PDA pretend a USB stick. Other pretended devices shouldn't be a problem then!
Chatty - I don't know anything about interfacing with the camera, but obviously from my SuperBright Magician screen adventures, I know that you can kind of control the camera programatically. From there, you could use a timer to snap pictures every X seconds, and use code to FTP them (using wifi), or RAPI them over to the desktop if that was what was required (using USB). On WM5 I believe that this will be significantly easier.
That's not going to give you video I guess. You might be able to look into container video formats to see if we can stream the video, deleting as we're going, so we just stream straight from the PPC to a non local source without taking up much local space. But I've got no idea if that's possible.
Converting the pic from a barcode: you'd have to write custom "ocr" type software I guess. I've never done that before.
Good luck though

do a search in the forum for camara api or stk
and find that htc is not much for sharing the interface to the camera
Rudegar - tell me about it! At least <WM5 I think the camera is very proprietary, but it can be arm twisted into taking snaps programmatically.

direct show / camera
may I suggest to have a look at CameraCapture sample in msvc-8.0
Any code to get access to a pixel pointer is welcome
I want to use xda as webcam under Linux...
Barcode reader is great, too

I know this software works to 'stream' the video from the camera to the desktop. I haven't tested it as a webcam, maybe it does work (?)

any one tried that app yet?

If you mean XDA-II or XDA-III, then the ADCM
camera module is not a problem, there is
a linux driver for it. The problem is the
undocumented ATI 3200 video capture port,
where the camera is connected.
It will be much easier on Magician or Universal,
where the builtin PXA27x camera
interface is used.
I tried Camera Capture sample from Windows Mobile 5.0 SDK and
I can access big camera, but I can't get image from small one.
I tried "CAM2:" as camera name, tried FindNextDevice() - it doesn't work.
Does anybody know how to access second camera?
Undocumented interface?
Registry setting?
HELP!

i'm also interrested about this info.
I am also interested:Nobody knows how to use the second camera for the skype or messenger you have installed in you HTC Universal, not as webcam for desktop computer.
*Bump*
I've searched through the forum and unfortunately haven't found any DirectShow solutions to access the front camera of the HTC Universal (or TyTN). Only thing I found was some low level .dll hacking.
If anybody has found a way to access the second capture device (front camera), please share.
Thanks in advance
I don't know how to access second camera.
But I know that CoolCamera can use the second camera to take pictures, and also as a webcam for desktop computer
I have wireless IP cameras (LinkSys) in my house to keep an eye on things when I'm not home. I can view the cameras from any laptop/PC through a linkSys internet site. However, I can't see the camera video from my HTC TyTn when viewing the website. This may be because PIE doesn't support ActivX? Are there any browers or software available that will let me view the camera video from my TyTn? Thanks.

I doubt this is exactly what you are looking for but rather a fall back solution if all else fails.
Use logmein to view your home PCs screen. Would require the PC to be left on though screen could be off. Not sure whether video would be very smooth/lag free. Since it's all free I guess you could try it.
Like I say, not ideal.
Mike
Try using Netfront to view it--works for me.
if you have an old pc at home and want to play linux, www.zoneminder.com is an open source cctv application that works brilliantly. works with video capture cards and also many ip cameras. the is a "live cd" available to download via a torrent that will let you test it if you like without installing. the same cd can also then install a full linux system on the pc for you. the learning curve is a little steep (mainly getting head round linux). But there is great help available on their forums. it will motion detect etc, also includes a webserver. So just get a free dns from dyndns.org and you are away. currently it cannot stream to phones. it sends jpegs etc. There is also an xtml interface for standard phones.
Honestly is worth a look, its also very stable!
Thanks, all, for your help. I'll check these out.
Here's one stupid question.
Altrough the camera seems to be ok in terms of hardware drivers i can't seem to find any utility to start it neither in control pannel or anywhere else. I cannot use it in yahoo messenger or similar services. Can someone enlight me about that camera?
camera does work , but only in MSN messenger
I played with the camera too...
The only program that recognizes the camera, and uses it OK , is MSN (live) messenger.
X-Lite (Voip Software with camera option) usually detects any camera I got.
However, on the Shift, no joy !
Also, another program called WinTLV (Superb windows time lapse recording software)
does not see the camera.
Drivers...drivers...drivers.... c'mon HTC .. supply us with new ones

With the program Active Webcam from Py Software can use the build-in Shift camera.. You can do video and photo
yep the Active Web Cam program works. I've tested it yesterday without any problems. However the program can't facilitate the usage of the camera with other programs.
I want to run the camera alone to take photo, do you guys know any good software out there with good and clean interface which does this job?
I use Dorgem v2.1.0 it's a small and freeware software.

Nice little camera app. Thanks.
Yu can use this one too
http://www.nchsoftware.com/capture/index.html
I had the same problem of the camera showing as installed but not recognised by MSN, Skype, etc. So I just deleted the driver (from Device manager). Windows then rediscovered it and then it worked fine!
I have been using "cheese" on ubuntu. it has preview and can be used to capture video or still pictures.

This one is more than capable. The one posted earlier on page 1 (can't remember what it's called) has been discontinued.
But the one quoted above is perfect just for using the camera for point and shoot, video or stills.
Thanks.
Edit>>Struggles a bit with video (low frame rate, a bit like video calling quality, or like video phone you see on the news!) but I haven't really had a good luck around the settings yet too see if it can be manually improved.
I have installed the Debut Video Capture Software on my Shift, but when I run it it defaults to 'screen' which replicates my screen image but when I click 'Device' the selection remains at screen. I can't see any options to enable my camera device.
Anyone know what to do next?
(The dorgem one worked fine so my Shift hardware is not in question.)
Camera software
I tried a program called "AMCap" that I had. (You will have to Google for it, I can't remember where I got my).
It seems to catch the video & audio and lets me take stills and such.
