TCPMP plugin for Flash video v0.4 released - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

It looks like a new version of the flash video (.flv) plugin for TCPMP was just recently released.
For those not in the know, it's a plugin designed to work with the great freeware media player TCPMP, that lets you play flash video files.
It is designed for Pocket PC 2003, Windows Mobile 5.0 and higher. The plugin will never support the commercial successor to TCPMP CorePlayer (licensing issues).
This version allows you to play flv files directly over the internet via the site http://www.mobytube.net/ which lets your search and play YouTube and Google Video files via a mobile browser such as Pocket Internet Explorer.
I tried it out and it works great.
1.) For ease of use you should make sure TCPMP is associated with .m3u files.
2.) Then just visit http://www.mobytube.net/ with Pocket Internet Explorer (or Opera Mobile or other web browser that lets you download/launch files).
3.) Search for a video, once you find one you want to play, click on the video to download/launch the .m3u in TCPMP.
4.) Depending on your settings in TCPMP you might have to click the play button to start streaming the video.

wow, thanks for full info. i used prev versions, and it is very good thing.
btw, works fine in 0.81.

How do you install this on a Mogul/PPC-6800/WM6 and which one do I download?

You should first have TCPMP installed, download the Windows Mobile version from here:
http://picard.exceed.hu/tcpmp/test/
Also, download/install any additional plugins you would like, though they're not required for playing back the flash videos.
Then download tcpmpflvplugin-v0.4.zip from here:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=196939&package_id=232906
Unzip and copy the files in inside the zip file into the folder (not in a subfolder under it) where you have TCPMP install on your PDA (on my device this folder is located in \Program Files\TCPMP).
Make sure TCPMP is associated with .m3u files by :
1.) Starting TCPMP
2.) Taping on the "Options" menu item
3.) Choosing the "Settings" menu item
4.) Tapping on the "Select Page" button (lower right)
5.) Selecting the "File Associations" menu item.
6.) Selecting/Checking "M3U playlist files (M3U)" from the list.
7.) And then finally tapping the "OK" button.

The plugin is corrupt
*edit* for some reason FireFox was downloading it incorrectly.

thanks for the heads up - 0.3 always worked well but went and upgrade to 0.4 anyway. cheers.

Is that Coreplayer 0.81 or is there a TCPMP 0.81? Latest TCPMP I found is 0.72RC

New release: tcpmpflvplugin-v0.4.2
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=196939

This plugin is just brilliant.
Warning : it COULD eventually induce a slight addictive usage of your PPC.

Great development, but only works for mobytube.net and .m3u files.
Can't play directly from youtube.
I'd love for this plugin to be made compatible with smartphones 2003SE (with TCPMP).
Can't understand why WM2003SE arn't supported?

Viewing movies - Mpeg Avi etc

Hi All,
First post from a real novice. I have just got an xda 2 and am trying to copy a couple of movie clips from my pc to the mobile device.
Some copy and some do not. I have downloaded Pocket TV and
Pocket MVP and highlighted both, separately, when trying to copy in explorer. Every time I get an error message. This is the second half of one of the files I am trying to copy:
My Documents\Audi Pictures\hendrixTTad.mpeg.mpg
Appreciate any help in advance.
Have you tried playing them through the inbuilt windows media player version 9. What is the nature of the error, is it when you are copying the files ot attempting to play them?

When I am in Media Player (9) on my desk top in the 'Copy to CD or Device section' - I hit copy and it comes up 'An Error occurred' on the text of the file. It doesn’t even start to copy etc. The file plays perfectly well on the desktop media player.
Thanks
try to drag and drop the file using file explorer.

Nice one! I copied the file to my documents in the xda on my lap top and it worked.
Then when I went to Pocket TV it was there ready to go.
A couple of quick questions: 1) What is the quickest way to get to 'My Documents' on the xda 2?
Where exactly are these mpegs stored as I can only view them when I'm in Pocket TV?
Thanks again.
my advice is to use pockettv it's a better player then wmp9

I like pockettv, but it only seems to play mpegs. Is this the case?
It seems that I have to watch mpegs in Pockettv, Microsoft files in Media player and AVI's won't play in either. I got Pocket divx, but it won't play any file with sound. It keeps comming up with an audio error and invariably crashes. Am I doing something wrong here or is there a one for all solution?> Thanks.
Take care of the codecs used for audio / video
When you create files for the ppc, you have to make sure, that you use only codecs for the audio / video part, that are supported by the players / device.
Check http://www.mathiaspohl.de/mda for a short "How to" guide about the creation of divx or WMV files for the pocket pc.
If your file cannot be played by the media player, just re-encode this like described on this page.

What do you think of inbuilt WM5 Utilities?

Hello
Am I the only one who has problems with the inbuilt Microsoft Crap, in particular File Explorer. When ever I use it, for example trying to open the Windows Directory, the 'Please Wait Circle' goes around and around for minutes, or it simply crashes the system needing a Soft Reboot.
However, Resco Explorer opens straight away, Gsfinder+ again opens straight away.
Windows Menu System, so slow, install Wisbar Advance and it fires up straight away. Why can't Microsoft ever get anything to work properly, yet third party developers really boost the system?
Is there any way to strip down WM5 so releasing Memory and just use third party software?
Well, you are not the only one. Not that that is much comfort.
Here is another story for you:
Transfer 5MB directory with file explorer over WIFI (from shared folder on PC) - 1min 30sec.
Same directory with Total Commander - 25sec.
And of course there are little things, like file extensions or opening files directly from shared folders on PC.
Unfortunately, you can't get rid of the built in crap because it is part of ROM. So there is no memory to be reclaimed (unless you are good at cooking your own ROMs and can substitute programs directly there).
Personally I use:
TCPMP / WinamPaq instead of WMP
Total Commander instead of File explorer.
I use TCPMP like you as it appears to play just about everything, but have you noticed that if you tap on an AVI up comes Media Player by default to tell you that it does not support the file.
Microsoft even say on http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/windowsmobile/faq.aspx#5_1
"5.3 Why can't I play a file that I copied to my device?
You are trying to play a file format that Windows Media Player 10 Mobile does not support (such as files with the extensions .avi, .divx, .m4a, .mpeg, .mpg, .ms-dvr, .ram, .wav, or .xvid)"
I thought this might be due to the supported Codecs
Microsoft MPEG-4 codec version 2.0 and 3.0.
ISO MPEG-4 video codec version 1.0.
But they appear to use the extension MP4
So if Media Player does not play AVI, why is it associated with Media Player?
It's because MS is BEEP BEEEEEEEEP BEEP.
But seriously, in TCPMP go to:
Options->Settings->Select page->File association
select all the file types you want associated with TCPMP and click OK.
This should solve the problem, and you will even see TCPMP icon next to the file names in explorer.

windows media player mobile reg edit.

I installed some sh!tty player on on my precious wizard, then removed it. Now I can't open my media files with wmplayer. I mean I can open them from the inside of the player, but not when I browse them from file explorer. I looked for reg edit command to change the program media files open with, but now luck? Anybody knows how to do this?
Also I cannot seem to get my image vieweing thing to do a slideshow.
Thanks -Greg.
Just choose the file you want to play in file explorer and then click menu-->open path-->new path and direct it to WMP in the windows folder. After that, all of your files of the same type should open with WMP again, atleast that's how you fixed it in WM2003 anyway. I haven't had to try it in WM5 or WM6 to know for sure.
I don't know about the slideshow thing though, I've never used that before.

The crappy player you installed was associated with (wav) files that are for windows media player. Try re-installing that same player, look at its file associations, uncheck (wav) may have kept settings after removal, and then remove the player again if you still don't want it. soft re-set, check files in file explorer, and if all the above actuated, the files should have the wmp icon. Word of advice from experience....always remove settings from programs that were installed before you remove that program. As far as slide show, are you meaning where songs play in sequence (queued up)? By the way, what was the crappy player? I've removed a few of them myself..
hey guys thanks much for replies. Xeno I couldn't get the path thing to work. If I type in \windows\wmplayer.exe it just opens player in library mode, doesn't change the way it opens either. The player was pocket dvix player. I was looking for something that will play AVI dvix and xvid files. Now I installed something called TCPMP pocket pc player and it works very very well.
TCPMP is way better than WMP anyway. Sorry the open path didn't work, but like I said, I wasn't sure if it still worked that way or not in WM5 and 6. Atleast now you have a better media player. TCPMP is the only player I ever use.

BBC iPlayer Mobile - For WiFi enabled devices only

Hi all
I hope all you Brits out there are enjoying the snow. My office is closed today so I thought I'd share my experience of using the BBC iPlayer. I believe it can work for you too, if you're UK based. N.B. at the moment it only works over WiFi. Don't blame me for that, it's the BBC's restriction on their website. Also, this worked on my Kaiser, so again no guarantees it'll work on other devices, but I see no reason why it wouldn't.
Here's what I did:
Install the Opera 9.5.15529 cab that are attached to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=475986
You will also need HTC Streaming Media. I've attached a version available on this forum. I don't actually know whether this will work on your device as I have the sreaming media cooked into my ROM (see below). Obviously if you have a VGA device you should use the equivelant version of Opera for VGA devices.
There are two other files attached. ASPlayer.exe and ASPlayerLNK.lnk. ASPLayer.exe is infact VJBrisk.exe renamed from an installation of VJBrisk by Vijay555 and a renamed link to the sreaming media player application. If you are installing the Media Player app attached then you need to check the shortcut to ensure it's correct. The one attached is for the executible in the windows folder (\Windows\StreamingPlayer.exe). You can edit shortcuts on your device using TotalCommander.
Once you're happy that the link is correct, copy ASPlayer.exe and ASPlayerLNK.lnk to the \Windows directory of your device.
In Opera type: opera:config in the address bar. Scroll down to User Prefs and open this section. Go to Custom User-Agent. Here type "sgh-i900" without the quotes and then scroll down and select save. Exit Opera and restart it. Go to:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/mobile/iplayer
in Opera and you will see the mobile iPlayer page load up. Select your chosen TV or Radio programme and click to play. The streaming app should now open and display your programme.
Hope this helps. I watched "Who do you think you are?" with Rory Bremner in bed this morning!
Best wishes
andrew-in-woking
Thank you for this tut, I have followed your instructions and all seem to be ok (I didn't watch a video but the streaming media did kick in when i clicked play.
I will test later and get back to you
I got as far as the file being played. Audio is fine, but no picture.
Any Ideas?
Tried this on a touch and a hermes

Hi
If the HTC Streaming Media doesn't work on the Xperia then you will need equivelant software. You could try the media player attached if nothing else works. Real player might work also. Obviously you'd need to manually edit the shortcut in this case but hopefully you can get it working.
Cheers

Hi
Yes, this is the way the website behaves. Obviously the BBC believe that this is necessary at the moment as they'd rather no compromise on quality.
I guess for now this is not available for phones with no wifi connection. I'll change the first post to make this clearer.
Many thanks
andrew-in-woking
Your post is it VGA or QVGA as sounds great
Almost there!
Thanks for your post, I'm using a Hermes wm6 with your htc streaming media installed. It opens up streaming media ok but then has an unknown error message (both for tv and radio). Could be running low on ram causing the problem. Also tried Skyfire but it doesn't like the IP address and doesn't recognise me as British. I am not giving up just yet though!
Just tried on a Touch... sound only however nothing at all on live streams (memory not an issue here, my ten year olds xmas pressie!)
QVGA

Hi wapvirus
It's QVGA but should work with a VGA device as long as the correct streaming media player is installed and can be linked to the ASPlayer.exe shortcut in \Windows.
Hope that helps. Love your QVGA colour task bar items by the way!

i got 'unknown error' for the htc streaming media player on my lg ks20. Any ideas? how do i link it to the ASPlayer.exe?
Help me plz
Still tryin on my hermes, the best player to date was a dopod version (works perfectly.... but no video!!! Sounds great). After a little search I stumble on an updated tcpmp player which should play the files ok BUT how do I change the ASPlayer to use this as default, or do I change one of the Streaming Media files to use tcpmp ? It will not let me change the aslink.ink page and I presume we leave the opera setting on sgh-i900. I think I have at least 10 different media and streaming players now installed & have become very confused...
shame this cant be make into apanel for the x1 like they have done with youtube

Hi redflag
The simple answer is that you need to edit the destination of the shortcut: ASPlayerLNK.lnk which you copy into windows along with ASPlayer.exe. This link can be edited with the file editor in Total Commander PPC. Hope that helps. If you're unsure about shortcut editing do a search for it on this forum.
Cheers
andrew-in-woking
Success... kind of
Thanks for your reply, have taken a flood day off work! Total Commander is not letting me save the edited LNK.Ink file so I went back and had another go at Skyfire and have got it working on both my hermes and on a touch. The only disappointment is that ,whilst Skyfire uses the main iplayer site which allows downloads, it doesn't feature live tv which yours does by using the mobile site. Keep up the good work!
Had problems getting video to work but when I used this version of the HTC Streaming Player it all worked fine!

media file not supported?
thanks andrew-in-working
so i followed you instructions...opera installed, streaming media, changed user pref. All goes very well from iplayer in opera, link to streaming media and then... streaming media opens, a black screen and 0% buffering message appears, it hangs for a while and tells me this:
"media file not supported"
any idea why it should state this? odd that it is not recognising a file type?
any help would be appreciated..

How to stream internet audio on the HD2?

It seems like the basic music player doesn't support streams, there doesn't appear to be any support in windows media player for streams either...
In the end I searched for some tools and GSplayer came up as supporting streams, so i tried that and copied the CAB install file to the storage card, it showed up in the start menu...I can run it and open a URL or local .pls file and it starts to stream...you see the percentage buffer quickly shoot up to 100% but then nothing happens...no audio, nothing.
I'm basically trying to play audio from an internet radio station I use a lot at home (xfm.nl) if you click "Luister Live" on the left you'll see shortcuts for all the streams.
Can anyone help? My settings are OK I think, I can get to the internet and recieve my email and use all the web based apps, so I don't think its a connection thing...maybe GSPlayer just doesn't support the HD2?
Try Skyfire browser.

I have WunderRadio but since you know the stream you want to play coreplayer will open it.
I just tried this using Skyfire and GSPlayer.
I clicked on the Winamp mobile link, and it downloaded the .pls stream to my storage card. GSPlayer opened automatically. I've set GSPlayer to own .pls files, so maybe that would help.
Just tried clicking on the downloaded .pls file and it also opens up GSPlayer. Hope that helps! At least you know that it can work
I want to know something fairly similar, is it possible to make a player stream a song or file instead of having to download it first. Sometimes with very large files I just want to play it and let it download as it plays instead of waiting for the entire file to download before being able to play it.
Try Groovemobile or nanogroove.
I just upgraded from a Touch Pro 2.
I have a few shoutcast .pls files I used to open and stream in coreplayer 1.3.6 build 7427 with no problems.
I have changed from o2 to orange but all other streaming seems ok (e.g nanogroove/groovemobile/youtube/myplayer etc).
On the HD2 when I try to open the .pls files I get an unknown file format (0106) error or sometimes coreplayer just crashes.
Anyone know how to get coreplayer working with there files again?
I enjoy accessing last.fm using the skyfire browser.
Try SPB Radio, pretty good!
I just wanted to thank everyone posting suggestions, I will be trying some of them out soon
There is also coreplayer which handles .pls and .m3u file attachments.
