Perfect internet, but no email - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

So I've searched the forums for ever combination of email, error, synchronize, and synchronizing and have found no answer to my question. I have AT&T Wireless and I just upgraded my ROM and reloaded the WAP settings. I can surf the internet fine but whenever I try to receive my email in Outlook I get an error and am told that my connection settings are wrong. When I tried another set of wireless settings I could get my email but not get on the internet. Any idea what the problem is?

I have the exact problem that I'm trying to figure out.
I'm using T-Mobile with Schap's WM6 ROM v3.57a.
If I use "My ISP" with the T-Mobile wap.voicestream.com access point, I can get email, but the internet connection (PIE, streaming media, weather updates) fails.
If I use the "Work" connection (with the T-Mobile proxy settings), the internet works, but email fails (Error Synchronizing).
Anyone have an idea of how to get both to work together? It used to work fine...before I updated the ROM (the last time it worked was with LVSW's 3.24.0.4 ROM). I believe it stopped working after I did my first "official" ROM update with the DOPOD release.
On that note, I think the Connection settings options are different for this new release. I could have sworn that I could add proxy settings for the default "My ISP". As it stands, it only allows Modem setup with access point setting.

On inspection, I think this is T-Mobile's evil doing:
1) My wife has an 8125 (WM5), and hasn't changed anything. She could do both, now only her email works - no internet.
2) I went back to the LVSW ROM. Same behavor.
I think it was a coincidence that it stopped the same weekend I updated.
I think we're screwed.
...At least with the T-Mobile $5.99 plan.

Okay...just to continue this conversation with myself, it appears I spoke too soon.
The good news is I got both to work.
I didn't realize that when I set up the POP3 email, I had to select "Work" instead of "The Internet" for the Network connection (in the "Advanced Server Settings" screen).
Like, DUH!
Excellent. But I'm not sure why the change had to happen. I know I never made that setting before.
Unfortunately, I still can't get Windows Live Mail to work anymore. But, I'll live. I was more concerned with the POP3 stuff.

T-Mobile USA GPRS cannot reach google web sites

I signed up for the T-Mobile USA internet (GPRS) few days ago.
I could establish the connection using my Universal.
I could browse most web sites, and could download emails from my company exchange server and Hotmail.
Only one strange thing, i could never download emails from Gmail. It will go to the login process, and when it reaches the Sending and Receiving... it will go forever.
I also noticed that I could not browse any google.com web sites including www.google.com, mail.google.com, news.google.com etc..
I tried to get T-Mboile technical support help but it has been useless and helpless. Somebody told me that it might be something to do with the MTU size that the T-Mobile network can pass along today.
If I swicth over the connection to Wifi or dial up via GSM, I can reach everything including Gmail and Google web sites just fine, from the same device (Universal).
Any one, that uses T-Mobile USA GPRS as well, can you please help?
Thanks.
hey I have t-mobile usa also but with the PDA2K (BlueAngel) when I was running WM5.0 and now back to 2003se I had no problems connecting to google.com/pda but I do know that their is a registry hack to make it go to the default google.com but I wouldn't advise it, becuase it interfeirs with other web sites.
Also T-Mobile has 2 data plans WAP and Total Internet the wap is limited to wap sites and such but the other is open to all sites, check your settings to make sure you are connecting to GPRS and not WAP.....
The difference is like 20 or 30 a month though
WAP 19.99 or 9.99
GPRS 29.99 and up for MyMail or VPN MyMail
I have the full GPRS (the new name: Total Internet for $30). Now its bundled with the hotspot and they are not longer offering the $20 for GPRS only.
Can you tell me what access point you set in your device? Mine is set to wap.voicestream.com and use no proxy. i noticed some ppl posted before that they proxy instead.
Thanks.
your connection is incorrect if you notice it is set to wap. even though you have the total internet that is only connecting you to the wap
your access point should be
internet2.voicestream.com or
internet3.voicestream.com
I used 3 on WM5 and it was fine I also use 3 on wm2003se
negative. I could connect to internet2.voicestream.com but not internet3.voicestream.com
internet2.voicestream.com gives me exactly same result.
I can connect to any websites but not google.com with both wap.voicestream.com as well as internet2.voicestream.com
very strange. anybody in Texas particularly has same issue?
I'm out of Massachusetts, but was in Dallas a few days ago and had no problem connecting to Google. I use internet2.voicestream.com
This issue has been driving me nuts for 6 months. I've been trying to nail down the problem, I'm wondering if it's a regional setting with T-mobile's servers or incorrect account set ups. Some people with other Universals and Wizards in other area's claim they do not have this problem.
Here's a general thread on Ho-fo that's been getting some hits, when I posted about it here on XDA forums there wasn't much response.
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=605044
I actually have a couple friends how work for T-mob that thought the problem was with my JasJar until they got ahold of the MDA and discovered the exact same problem.
I've emailed google, just got a response saying they would forward the concern to their tech's. Please share any info or response you get so we can try to get this resolved!!
I've actually had the same problem and I'm on Cincinnati Bell (which is also Cingular & AT&T). I used to be able to connect with no problem on my PDA2k but with the Universal I can't connect. Actually, I've been able to hit the www.google.com/pda site and type in a search but then it just sits & spins forever.
I have the same problem with my MDA from T-mobile. It only happens sometimes. It always connect to google and m.gmail when using wi-fi, but is very hit or miss when connected over GPRS.
Thats the least of my problems however, as I am constantly getting dropped from the GPRS data network even with full coverage, and I'm in the NYC area. I have alerted T-mobile to both problems and am considering turning in my device since i still have a week to do so not because of the device but because of the connection issues with the network.
This has been a bit of a nightmare when it comes to email, because I came from using a blackberry where all my accounts were instantly pushed, to this now when sometime i get email, sometimes not, my Gmail doesnt work properly, and it can take a half an hour for the email to finally reach me.
No problems here
I have no problems connecting to Google.com from my Blue Angel, or from my friend's Wizard. I'm still waiting for my Universal.
I don't have Total Internet Plan, though. I just have the T-Zones hack: In Settings/Connections/Connections, go to "Edit my proxy server" and select "Advanced". HTTP server should be set to 216.155.165.50:8080. Any other HTTP settings should be cleared.
I've noticed in the past two days, however, that Google seems to have changed what it considers a "mobile device", based on the client's User-Agent string. It goes to www.google.com/xhtml if it detects a mobile device. Previously it went to www.google.com/pda , but for a smaller number of devices. Google's "mobile" page has fewer links on it, and is not as useful as the main page.
I use NetFront 3.2, which allows me to change the User-Agent string to make it look like a desktop browser. Today I changed it to:
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; en) Opera 8.51
I also changed the language/platform to en/x86.
This seems to make Google go back to the normal page.
But no connectivity problems are happening with GPRS. I can search Google, browse results, search newsgroups, search News, etc.
There was an T-mobile outage reported in California last week (search HowardForums). Perhaps this is related (routing issues?).
PS: It seems to depend on the User-Agent, whether www.google.com/pda or www.google.com/xhtml is used. If I run Pocket Internet Explorer, it still goes to /pda (searches work fine). If I run NetFront with factory settings, it goes to /xhtml. If I run Opera, or change Netfront as above, then it goes to the Google main page. In no cases does it have problems connecting. Response is a little faster on the main page, though, which would seem to indicate that Google Mobile does something which is slower.
[rant]
Google saying that they "don't support T-Mobile devices with Google Mobile" is like saying "best viewed with xxx browser". The phone provider should have no effect on the usability. Nor should Google have to go out of their way to provide a different experience for Mobile users, or to second-guess their needs based on a User-Agent string -- anyone with any browser should be able to use Google, and nothing special should be done for mobile.
I say disable Google Mobile, by changing the User-Agent.
[/rant]
I have a T-Mobile MDA with the Total Internet plan and Google works fine for me.
Thanks for feedback folks. This isn't a new issue, I've had this problem for 6 months. I currently have my user agent set to IE 5.5/NT so that I can access my bank web page, I've tried several combinations of user-agent settings with no luck, can you explain the exact changes I'd need to make to try your current setting?
Also, I'm hoping that when Netfront releases a WM5 compatible version I can run through a proxy server (which I've also heard solves the problem).
This is with Blue Angel (SX66), WM2003, T-Mobile T-Zones proxy, NetFront 3.2, so your mileage may vary. I will be getting an O2 Exec any day now.
Tools/Browser Setting/Misc/User Agent/Edit

appName: (blank)
appVersion: (blank)
appCodeName: (blank)

Tools/Browser Setting/Network/Proxy (T-Zones only, not Total Internet)
Use Proxy: (checked)
Proxy (hostort) 216.155.165.50:8080
Note that NetFront 3.3 is coming out soon. I'm sure it will support WM5.0, but right now Access says "(* Its verification is not completed.)"
Have you tried Opera? It works with T-Zones proxy, at least in WM2003, if you set the proxy in the GPRS Connection Settings.
It might be worth trying the T-Zones hack. Go to My T-Mobile, log in, and then go to this T-Zones page (if that does not work, go to "Plan&Services, Learn About Services, Communication, T-Zones"). Add T-Zones (aka T-MobileWeb) to your plan. Then you should be able to use the proxy as described above. You can remove it later if you don't want to pay the $6/month extra. Some people have even reported being able to add it and remove it immediately, but keep the services.
I tested to connect to the internet via T-Mobile GPRS with my universal as a USB modem hooked up to my laptop.
And it gives a totally different behaviour compared when used directly from the Universal (with pocket IE and Mail application).
Besides a decent speed, I could browse to google, perform search etc, everything seems to work perfectly (from my laptop, Universal as a USB modem). When I browse the same thing again from the Universal, same problem occured again, never get any search result back from google, and GMail will stuck in the step "Sending and Receiving..." which will go forever until it times out.
I also tested with my Wallaby the same thing to make sure its not the device problem, and it turned out the same problem exists also.
I really could not pin point where the problem is. Please help to think, folks. Its not the device problem? Is it T-Mobile GPRS network problem? Or what?
Are there packet sniffers for PPC? Something like tcpdump, traceroute, ping? That would be my next step. See where it's hung up.
There are some PPC tools for that stuff, I played with an app called TCPTune (I think) but couldn't accomplish anything, I'm totally ignorant of the network stuff.

Holly crap I made this change (still with full Tmob internet plan) and a few registry edits based on your Netfront settings (probably butchered my registry) and manually forced a connection via my WAP settings and THEN LOADED GOOGLE OVER GPRS!! FULL HTML GOOGLE, NEWS GMAIL, IMAGES, ON MY JASJAR VIA GPRS OMG!! I'm really feeling very strong emotional feelings of like towards you right now Leek!
I'm having some trouble with google local not returning results (starts to load a page with a text box and then stops), not sure why but I suspect it's a problem with my hacked up user agent registry settings.
So, here's my question - I really don't mind paying the full $20 for regular GPRS (and wouldn't want to worry about full access via the $4.99 tzones going away), how do I either make this work using my regular GPRS settings (so I don't have to use an alternate connection) or how do I get the WAP settings to work as my primary settings for all programs? I was able to update my feeds and load images over this WAP settings just fine, but when I tried to check my email or load Agile messenger it tried to load my regular GPRS settings.
In order to figure out exactly which change made this work I went back and reset my PPC to a backup from last night. The only registry edits I have now are my old ones that made PIE show the version as "MSIE 5.5" & the platform as "Windows NT 5.0". Other than the changes below, I'm using the T-mobile CAB settings from i-mate.
I went into settings > connections > and below My Work Network I went to Manage existing settings and then clicked on the Proxy Settings Tab. The two check boxes were already checked but the proxy server was blank so I entered the 216.155.165.50 and then click on advanced. and it then showed that server under Type HTTP but the port was 80 not 8080, I then clicked on the HTTP server and edited the port to 8080 and then hit ok. I left all the other servers that were listed as is.
From the main Connections > Settings screen I then clicked on manage existing connections, it brought up the T-mobile WAP connection and then I click-held on that and selected connect. I then loaded PIE, navigated to Google and grinned as it loaded everything.
Under this connection type most other web pages I've been trying work fine, although some (like howard forums and search.yahoo.com) don't work. *edit hofo might be down right now*
The problem I was having initally with Google local (via web, haven't tried the local java app) is resolved and it now loads fine, as I suspected it must have been my hacked up user agent registry settings. I'm now also able to check and send POP email with this WAP connection, Agile Messenger connects to the servers.
Big thanks to leek for posting this fix here, now how can I make this my default connection and should I try to downsize my account to just the $5 tzones account?
found how to make it the default connection method (connections > settings > advanced > select networks > and then set the top drop down to "my work network".
Leek, buddy, I owe you a case of beer... This had been driving me nuts for 6 months, you solved it!!!
hi galt and leek,
I'm so excited to read that you guys succesfully solved this.
i could not try it out anymore, I changed my T-Mobile plan yesterday, I removed my total internet plan as I don't want to pay $30 per month without even able to access my primary email account: Gmail and google around.
SO, can you give summary again how to make this works?
I assume no extra application to install beside all standard application built in WM5.
Pls clarify:
1. Get T-MobileWeb /t-zones plan ($5.99)
2. set the proxy setting for HTTP with the port 8080 and left others empty (including the SOCKS, WAP)
3. Use the APN: wap.voicestream.com
Do I miss anything? Any reqistry setting I have to make?
That's it? And you can have full access to the internet? Can you clarify if Gmail is working via POP3?
I tried the proxy setting when I still had my total Internet plan but it did not work out. :`(

Live Messenger DOESN'T Connect thru GPRS

Hey,
I can't seem to get WLM for Windows Mobile to work. I have searched XDA as well as HoFo, I have tried various roms (Xplore 1.1, Xplore 2.0 Beta, Faria's 'The Real Thing,' Faria's AKU3.3 WM5, and even T-Mobile's 2.26), and I have tried multiple connection changes.
I have also tried various Radio ROM's including 2.19.11, 2.25, 2.61, and 2.69.
The way I have my settings in "Settings>Connections>Advanced>Select Networks" is as follows:
1.)For the top option, I created a new network titled "WiFi." The only additional change I made to this one was to tick the box "this connection connects to the Internet," I did not tick the box for "Use Proxy."
2.)For the bottom, I also created a new network called "T-Mobile Web." For this, I added a modem (Cellular GPRS), entered an APN of wap.voicestream.com, did not add a VPN, turned Proxy on with a valid entry, and made sure the WAP and Secure WAP had valid entries.
With this setup I CAN access any website with Pocket IE and Opera 8.6x. Unfortunately, I cannot access Windows Live Messenger:
1.) Open WLM through the Program window
2.) I can either say "Sign In" on the homescreen, or go to "Cancel" and enter in my display name, but either way when I click sign in I get...
"Signing in to Messenger will add your Messenger contacts to your phone's address book. Do you wish to continue?"
3.) I say "Ok" to this, my phone notifies me that it is "Connecting to GPRS," then Windows Live states, "There's a connectivity problem. Make sure you're in an area with good phone reception and try again."
4.) I can press "Retry" as many times as I want, nothing changes.
I can also get a different error message if I click on the "Sign-in to Windows Live" from the Today screen. My phone then connects to the Internet again, then, after it successfully connects, I get, "Windows Live was unable to establish an Internet connection. Please check your Internet settings and make sure that you have access to data services under your billing plan. If you need help, please contact your mobile service provider."
I have tried removing the Live Messenger Today screen item to resolve it ( not that I thought it would work ). I have tried enabling the WiFi and that did not work. I have tried setting both Options in Settings>Connections>Advanced>Select Networks to my connection "Web," but that did not work.
I have tried in areas where I get full reception + GPRS/EDGE and I have tried in other areas, nearly one hundred miles away, where I had varying reception + GPRS/EDGE.
Any ideas?
im a beta tester for windows live mobile and can probably say without doubt its expired. mine wont connect when i new version comes out. they disable the older versions when a new build comes out. the latest build was realeased something like 2/4/07. thats how i can usually tell there is a new build available without going to the microsoft connect site, it just stops working.
try finding the latest build and you shouldnt have a problem
dolbe,
I would agree with you, but other people are using the exact same one that I have...only they are successful in connecting. Thank you for your insight, though.
I think you should change the thread name into something like "Windows Live Messenger DOESN'T Connect thru GPRS "
Good luck

I think the problem could be with the radio version or the rom,
Windows live/ email synchronisation connection solutions
Hey All,
Web browser working fine but you can't synch your e-mail account or windows live account? ... I was puzzled by this for quite a while myself before it finally clicked (I even got to a stage where I could sync my email and live account through my wireless internet but not through the mobiles own GPRS/3G)
The problem lies in the data connection that windows live account/ your email account attempts to use. The good news is that, it is usually very easy to select the right data connection for your email account to use:
1. Go through the E-mail account setup, where you enter your mail server settings. Continue to enter these as normal.
2. When you get to the "Outgoing (SMTP) mail server" page, tap "Advanced Server Settings". Under "Network Connection" you have the option to choose the data connection. This is usually set to "The Internet" as standard, but usually needs to be changed to "t-mobile internet", "vodafone internet" or whatever network connection has been setup to get your mobile connected to your providers own GPRS/3G. BINGO, your done... well most of the time.
The bad news for Windows live/ hotmail users is that they do not get the chance to select the network connection a windows live/hotmail account uses. On the very first part of the e-mail setup, as soon as you type in "[email protected], or [email protected]" , the account wizard completely takes over declaring that "settings found for hotmail.com". And even after you type in all your details you do not get to option to select the network connection to be used. (This is consequence of the fact that Microsoft Windows Mobile thinks it knows best how to configure microsoft based e-mail accounts for windows mobile.) The network connection that is automatically selected is called "The Internet". As you cannot select another network connection, you must edit "The Internet" connection so that it has the right settings for your particular mobile service provider. To do this:
1. Go to Start --> Settings --> Connections tab --> connections --> manage existing connections --> select "The Internet", and then tap "Edit".
2. Leave the name as "The Internet", but fill the rest of the boxes with the GPRS/3G settings of your individual mobile service provider.
Note: Getting these settings is relatively easy: 1.You can ask your mobile service provider. 2. You can search the web for the GPRS settings of your network. 3. If your web browser is working fine, you probably have the settings. Check under manage existing connections, and check the values used for "t-mobile internet", "vodafone internet", "orange internet", etc... and just copy them.
Enjoy,
AK
Hi AK,
could "The Internet" settings be hidden? I can't find the settings under Manage Existing Connections
This is truly a b*tch! I recently upgraded my Samsung i780 to Windows Mobile 6.1 via the free upgrade offered by Samsung (http://www.samsungmobile.com/support/i780/nr/subXb_xp.jsp) - and after that I lost my settings to make MSN work..
I remember that I spend lots of time to make it work last time aswell.. and at that time it always created two connections when I started to use MSN and check email at the same time.
After that, I used my phone on a flatrate 3G connection for almost 3 months in Asia without any trouble - it worked just great, I was emailing, using Skype, MSN, Google Map and everything flawlessly... Buut ofcourse I had to upgrade to 6.1 which I am happy about, since my phone is faster now.
Anyway.. tonight I finally got it working again; I wish I could make some kind of walkthrough.. but I can't..
What I did was to have two online configurations from my Danish telecom provider "Telenor" send to my phone by SMS (I could type in my phoneno. on their website, selecting which config I wanted); I got one for WAP called "E-GO" and I got one for Internet, called "Internet". For a while, I was using "Internet" as my default profile for everything, and it worked fine with everything except for MSN which refused to even attempt to logon.
Now I went to to Start --> Settings --> Connections tab --> connections --> manage existing connections --> and selected the "WAP" connection as my default connection instead.
Now everything suddenly works - I selected this connection also to be used now for my GMAIL account (under server priveligies while setting up your email), Skype works, MSN works, Google Map works, Explorer works, Opera Works..... all running full 3G HDSPA mode!
My guess is, that the problem rely on the fact that you cannot select any default connection for MSN. So the connection you select as your generic connection must be capable of running MSN and all the rest - so if it doesn't work with your "Internet", "My Internet" or "The Internet" connection, try changing to another one. If you don't have it, try to setup from your telecom provider - maybe another setting will work.
Last thing to do for me now.. a full system backup with "SPB Backup" to make sure nothing goes wrong ever again

8525 wifi - page not found

With my 8525, i connect just fine to all access points. However, when i try to browse the internet, I get the message "Page cannot be found. Please check spelling and try again". I get this message with all with web sites. I know there's something wrong becase this happens even on unsecured networks like airports, coffee shops etc. I recently upgraded to the to the new version that was released for PTT(Pust To Talk). Cans someone please help me. I really need this.
Did you change the rom on the phone???
Be sure that you are disabling the Proxy (assuming you are using an AT&T ROM). The WM6 ROMs from AT&T use a different method to manage proxy and it is ON by default. You should have two little apps called "Disable Proxy" and "Enable Proxy". Always run "Disable Proxy" before accessing anything besides your MediaNet GPRS account via the cell network. In other words, if you are accessing via wi-fi or if you are accessing "My ISP" or some other non-MediaNET account, disable the proxy first.
I've disabled the proxy on my 8525 and it seems to have done the trick. I've since been able to browse the internet using a wifi hotspot
i hope it continues to work
thanks
I've had success with the disabling of the proxy. However, sometimes in the middle of browsing i get the same message "page cannot be found...." and the the page progress indicator says "locating". it's like the proxy setting is not maintained. Can anyone provide some assistance in how this can be avoided......PLEASE?

Checking email when not on Wifi not working?

Hi there,
I have set up my POP3 email account on my HD (though have set to leave messages on server) and it works fine on Wifi (checks, downloads, sends, etc). However when I'm not on Wifi and I'm on TMobile data (HSDPA, 3G, GPRS, etc), I get an error when I try send and receive. It comes up with "error synchronising" and a popup appears at the top saying...
"Cannot connect with current connection settings. To change your connection settings, tap settings." If I go into settings, I get the list of connections, but can't see anything in there that needs changing. I'm on T-Mobile in the UK, and it lists "T-Mobile Internet" and "My Work Network". If I go into the T-Mobile Internet settings everything seems fine in there. And it all works when I go into the web browser, or Youtube app, etc.
Its almost as if the mail app doesn't have access to the data connection unless its over Wifi. Is there something I'm missing, or an area where you can tell it when to use the data connection? I've even tried manually enabling the data connection through the comm manager (rather than it starting when an app needs it), then switching to mail and clicking send/receive - still the same error.
Thanks,
Dave
Can anyone help me? I'm not sure whether its connected but I also have a problem where another programme (Lotus Notes Traveller client) doesn't seem to be able to get access to the internet connection on the phone, regardless of whether its Wifi, 3G or anything else.
Thanks.
this may sound odd but bare with me! i can get on the net and emails but my hd would not check emails when in standby no matter what i did. I then realised i couldnt send or receive mms messages! all the settings seemed ok. Anyway in my mms connection i changed the wap setting to 1.2 from 2 and my mms worked! But since then my phone now checks email in standby! I didnt realise they were connected but may be worth checking.

How do you change that wap setting. I have the same problem, but on T-Mobile USA
Hi,
I found I could sync emails using Wi-Fi ok but got the dreaded "failed to sync" message when using the GPRS method. I am also on T-Mobile.
The problem is T-mobile only let's you send emails using there smtp.
You need to go into the email options menu and keep clicking through the settings until you get to the send using smtp box, here you need to type smtp.t-email.co.uk
This will send mail using the T-mobile network.
Please post back if this helps

Some apps not triggering HSPDA connection

Hi all, got my new HD2 yesterday, got phonealarm, TOMTOM7 and a few other apps loaded plus all the HTC patches and latest ROM. Its an HTC branded phone on T Mobile PAYG.
When I go to check my e-mail, it pops up asking me to check my data settings with a dismiss button. When I try and use Twitter it says the service is temporary unavailable. When I use the Weather to update I get a similar message.
Browsing and FB are fine, I have requested the T mobile settings but they arrive as a voicemail message which is odd. Any ideas?
Thanks all.
tmo uk use a proxy, which is the first thing to turn off,
settings menu all settings connections* connections manage existing connections proxy tab untick uses a proxy.
try that, if that doesnt work, at the * point above, there should be a 'connection setup' app. Give that a try, but dont forget running it will probably re apply the proxy.
Genius maty, works a treat now. Also my twitter is now working. Could you explain why unticking it works? Cheers.
i'd assume its to do with the proxy traffic shaping in some way. i believe tmo compress images too,
Its the fault it did'nt even try, just popped up with the connections error and the dismiss button.
Just tried it again, fine, goes onto 3G, jumps to H, then checks mail no prob.
Only other thing to sort its the weather, it picks up my local town which is coded in. But the "my location" won't work. I get a connection error Retry YES or NO. Get this regardless of whether its wireless or active sync.
