xda-developers....proposal

"we should create a newbie forum!"
i ve seen this post in a discussion in reply to someone who was asking for some help and explications.
i do now understand the sarcastic and ironic nature of the reply, but i also would like to point out that is very difficult for beginners(same as me) to understand all of the terminology and issues that are going on in the forum.i believe is also problematic to find the answer some people are looking for (even trying with the search button) and almost inevitably, some questions end up in being asked twice or more by different users.
i know this is an informative as well as technical website but i personally find almost no differences between the "General discussion" or the "Programmers corner", and the forum end up in being instructive only for few and rather confusing for many.
So why not?why not create a newbie forum, like cynical suggested, or (this is my proposal) an explainatory page where listed all the vocabulary that you guys are using here?and maybe why not.... a catalog of all the stupid questions beginners like ma are afraid to ask..
this is only a suggestion and is not intended to be provocative at all...
ciao.

I second that. I have asked a years worth of idiot's questions in the last 12 hours... Thanks for the idea.
We ought to have some sticky posts in that forum of the most common questions and step-by-step guides on troubleshooting. We should maybe start a list of possible topics on this thread.
I vote for:
1. How do I use the XDAtools program to change my ROM?
2. How do I use the XDAtools program for the "SD method" of flashing?
3. How do I upgrade my radio stack (be sure to mention how dangerous this can be )
4. How do I use a ROM kitchen?
5. I've screwed during flashing. How can I recover?
I know of few of these answers now, I can help if the mods are kind of busy. I'll stay away from #3 though
"Stickies" are a good idea first I think.
No-one like to go to 'newbie' forums (i would guess)....unless it was called 'start here first!' forum....but something would be good.

Searching for Modifications, Roms etc

Hi,
I like the new fast website!
I wondered whether we could have an FAQ or Link or Sticky with instructions on how to search for items.
Specifically I wanted to find out about overclocking issues with an XDA2i (Alpine), and I was surprised that seaching for Alpine and overclocking gave so few hits.
I am fairly naive on these matters so excuse me if I'm asking a daft question, or have missed something obvious. I just thought some example would help me and others.
Thanks

[Q] New Guide Suggestion / Request

Hi -
I'm new to all of this ... reading FAR more than posting and trying to learn enough to ask intelligent questions.
I've found the existing guides very helpful, but there's one that I haven't found [yet] ... if it already exists, please accept my apology in advance for missing it ... if it doesn't exist, I think it would be a great addition to this forum: a glossary of 'cooking' & related terms and abbreviations.
Thanks again for all of the info,
-dmm
Here are a couple sites to check out:
Xdasite: this has a lot of basic rom cooking info; it's old, but has definitions if you look around.
PPCKitchen: Look up RStoyguy's tutorials; again, they're a little dated, but are very good and explain all of the basics.
Thank you!
I'll start with these ... additional info always welcome ...
-dmm
You could also have a quick read around the xda wiki, specifically in the Acronyms: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Acronyms, Glossary: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Glossary, and FAQ section: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=FAQ.
I'm not sure how useful you'll find it, but there is some good info there.
Thanks!
More good material ...

Theming Resources? Themers' Input Please

Hey all,
Little late in the game, but I want to start doing my own theming. I searched around many places and found several really good guides on creating and dev'ing themes:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3175518
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4438978
seem to be a couple of the really comprehensive ones.
Got them from the OP in one of our own Hero Themes and Apps sticky post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=588351 which also has some great stuff in it.
My question is....both of those I linked above seem like older posts. Is there anything more current, and perhaps specifically for our Hero, that I should use or be aware of? Or are these still good guides that will work well even now?
Feel free to flame/bash me if I've missed anything obvious out there. Thanks for your input.

[Q] Can you guys teach me the ropes!?

I am new to modding phone and all that great stuff and I have NO idea where to start or what any of the terms are that I see used. I don't know about any software to be able to DL the themes other create or any of that. If some of you guys can give me some insight of what I am doing that would be a great Christmas gift!! So in other words can you guys help me lol
Hello there...
It's been four days since you've posted this question without any responses. Care to guess why?
This forum typically expects its members to do some basic research before posting a question or a problem. At the very least, a simple google search would turn up most of the answers to your questions.
What is perceived as laziness on the part of the OP is never rewarded...frankly, I'm surprised you haven't been flamed yet.
My advice - start reading.
Cheers
here, its a sticky in the development forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=701245
the truth of the matter is no one wants to help you. Hell, even while I was learning to cook roms and reaching out to people no one would ever answer my questions. However, you can easily learn EVERYTHING you need to know simply by browsing the forums and reading. Unless you're reading a tutorial that someone specifically created almost nobody is going to spoon feed you....
If you HAVE questions you should really learn to master Google. It's amazing how learning to use a search engine can transform your life. It's all about asking questions and using descriptive keywords. "how to flash rom evo" will tell you a lot, "android what is root", etc.....
