[Q] New Guide Suggestion / Request - Windows Mobile

Hi -
I'm new to all of this ... reading FAR more than posting and trying to learn enough to ask intelligent questions.
I've found the existing guides very helpful, but there's one that I haven't found [yet] ... if it already exists, please accept my apology in advance for missing it ... if it doesn't exist, I think it would be a great addition to this forum: a glossary of 'cooking' & related terms and abbreviations.
Thanks again for all of the info,
-dmm

Here are a couple sites to check out:
Xdasite: this has a lot of basic rom cooking info; it's old, but has definitions if you look around.
PPCKitchen: Look up RStoyguy's tutorials; again, they're a little dated, but are very good and explain all of the basics.

Thank you!
I'll start with these ... additional info always welcome ...
-dmm

You could also have a quick read around the xda wiki, specifically in the Acronyms: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Acronyms, Glossary: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Glossary, and FAQ section: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=FAQ.
I'm not sure how useful you'll find it, but there is some good info there.

Thanks!
More good material ...
-dmm

ur asking an awful lot from people. i can see however that you havent got the latest o2 update. go to http://www.my-xda.com/xdaexec_soft.html to update!
there is so much of this information on this forum that it isnt funny asking for it again.
I can see that you have only ever made 2 posts, so it would seem that your first forum is out of naivety rather than stupidity.
As such, here are some hints and a starting point for you. Please be aware, that there is quite a good search function if you take the time to look and can use the multiple fields to narrow down your search function.
You can also try the wiki ftp site if you just want some software and utilities to use. In the end though, you will find the best outcome and most stable device if you go and buy it.

Agreed, this has been posted a great many times, each trying to be the definitive post on all aspects of the Universal - something which I think is frankly impossible as no single post can cater for everything.
In the defence of somewhat overwhelmed newcomers, however, I do think it's time for x-d to be reorganised (how many times have we said this??) and broken down more specifically than just General, Upgrading and Accessories. There should also be beginners guides, for just this kind of thing.
@ brightming: the links provided above are a good starting point, read them all thoroughly!
Cheers
Ant
I've been (mostly) lurking here for a few months and I'd agree - it'd be fantastic to have 1) more specific/detailed forums under the Universal heading and 2) some well-written, clear guides for newcomers - particularly given the repetition and duplication of many subjects in different posts. An alternative place to have some good how-to type guides might be the wiki, especially considering that it appears to be underused at the moment. Any mods fancy tackling this?...

Searching for Modifications, Roms etc

Hi,
I like the new fast website!
I wondered whether we could have an FAQ or Link or Sticky with instructions on how to search for items.
Specifically I wanted to find out about overclocking issues with an XDA2i (Alpine), and I was surprised that seaching for Alpine and overclocking gave so few hits.
I am fairly naive on these matters so excuse me if I'm asking a daft question, or have missed something obvious. I just thought some example would help me and others.
Thanks

Polaris ppl: Please Vote>>>MODERATOR! Please lock "HTC Polaris tweaks and tips.."
Seriously, guys, the "HTC Polaris tweaks and tricks" is completely out of control and ruining our Polaris forum. Issues that should be posted in general, or that deserve a new thread are all being posted in the tweaks and tricks thread. It has over 890 replies as of date! Its impossible to read, and a lot of good information and good answers to questions are getting lost in it.
Please, please, can a moderator lock just extract the original tweaks and tricks and lock the thread.
I've even included a poll so that we Polaris ppl can vote on the issue.
completely agree, i follow this forum almost everyday, but I never look there, it's too big a mess for me!!
good idea!
My god please do this!
all the usefull post (of the ts) should be putted in a new locked topic so you get 3 or 4 post with only usefull information!

The thread is a mess, it served it's purpose but has now become too cumbersome: remove the sticky and let this thread drift off into history.
As said above, we need a new page with the final list of Tweaks and Tricks, to be locked and linked to from the Wiki page.
The Polaris part of this site is completely amateur compared to some of the other areas I been on before - it's like it's still being treated like a beta product rather than the full production product it is now. Lots of people are running around developing different versions of the same things with very minor differences and no one wants to collect and document things in any standardized or useful manner. Unless you read every post in every thread you risk missing some valuable setting and having a system which can't do everything you need.
It would be a dream to have a wiki page with links to official roms, cooked roms, radio roms, utilities, tweaks and issues; with every thread linked from the wiki being no longer than one page in length. Strict enforcement and removal of off-topic posts would help.
It's great that everyone is working on developing continuously improved versions on a theme but if nobody builds-up the knowledge base around it then most of these efforts won’t get to the people who need them.
agree with you guys .. at 1st I found it useful because I knew where to look (at what pages) if I wanted to find anything .. now If I wand to find some new tips I have 2 read the thread for 2 days to see there are no new news.
If you could do something to improve the meaning of that thread if would be GREAT. If not, close it and remove it from "sticky" threads list.
cheers
IMO the thread is still useful, I vote for "let it open"
Why don't U just use the board function "Search this thread" to find your
solution?
I have to agree to Lock the thread - even though im relatively new to the forums i have been coming here for a very long time.
Additionally its not just that thread but a couple of the others too. TAKE BEPE'S Rom thread / and Udk - You have to go into them to see if any updates have been carried out - Bepe's says 0.65 , however 0.67 is available. New rom should = new thread!
In general it needs a clean up.
Thread is very usefull, but has become monster. It contains many usefull tips & tricks (as intended) and a lot of questions which are obscuring answers. I'm aware that without questions there would be no answers...
As I altready suggested there, it needs cleaning up... and there's no way you can search "iGO", for instance...
well guys..!
Who can make new thread ?
If some one here can make new thread beter than old one.I will lock it
Cheers..!
It voted for close it. I think a Tips and Tricks thread should not contain questions. Only the answers to questions, asked in other threads, should be put in the Tips 'n Tricks thread, as a kind of summary. Else it should be called the Ask-Everything-You-Want-And-Write-Anything-You-Like-In-This-Thread-So-It-Becomes-Unfindable-thread.
why do we even need another thread? can't this one just be closed and we use the forums as normal, creating a thread for an individual subject as and when we need to - I don't see the point in closing it just to start another one...
Someone could create a wiki out of the old thread and leave it at that, or just leave it there for peeps to look at/refer to when needs be.

I think that is an excellant idea

Herald Forum Overhaul Needed. (Suggestion)

There's a couple things I'm noticing...
First: People post in the wrong places...
Yes I know that some people are just dumb and don't bother reading. But what's the difference between the Herald forum and the Herald Mobile 6 forum? I'm not sure I understand... Although I'm sure there's a sticky note somewhere explaining it all, but I just took a brief look and didn't find it. I think the forum should be redivided into 4 or 5 sections. Ideally it would have: Herald Tutorials, Herald ROM Development, Herald Question and Answers, and Herald Accessories... So that way it's kind of hard to miss where to post the question and answers, and where to find the exciting tutorials.
Second: A lot of these posts are out-dated.
The ROM reviews seems like it would be one of the coolest, but it's falling behind on some of the best and most recent ROMs. The CAB collection(s) hasn't been updated in a while... There's like 8 or 9 cab collections I think... I'm sure there's a better way of doing that and keeping on top of it. Perhaps we just need some more people who are willing to keep up on all of these updates and post them.
Now I understand this would probably be a ton of work to create these forums and then move the threads that are still fine, but I think it would help a lot. I'd be willing to help in the process... I'm not just here to complain and not do anything.
I've been interested in rehauling the Herald forums, but unfortunately, I'm not a mod and they're not taking mod applications at the moment...
The whole thing needs a whole overhaul.
Herald and Herald 6 are redudant. The stickies are innefficient. No one posts where they should. If I were to be a mod, I'd spend a few weeks cleaning the place up. Of course, the ROM review thread and CAB collections would have to be updated by the original owner or by someone who had the time to undergo testing all those ROMs and collecting all those cabs.
wiki?
another idea is to create a wiki. it should based upon mediawiki (used by wikipedia). there you can create create cab collections, tutorials and so on.
it would be possible to create a seperate page for every custom rom.
discussions could already be done here in the forum. in the forum could be special threads for the pages and there could a be a link from the article to the thread.
EDIT: if some is interested in doing that, i would help, of course.
There already is a wiki, look at the top of the screen. It's just that no one uses it. No one writes to it and no one reads it.
i know. don't ask my why, but i don't like this wiki, too.
it is difficult to read because of the design. it is confusing...

I agree it's a little... ugly.
But I think that aside from that, out of the few people who DO write on it, most of them don't really format the articles very well.

Yeah, but if the stylesheet is not .. well .. very good, formating the articles doesn't really help.
Yeah, these guys should really be using MediaWiki.
I can write whatever plugins are needed. I'm fairly handy when it comes to writing plugins. I ported DomPDF to MediaWiki as a means of being able to convert any Wiki article into PDF using only PHP.
i've saved a lot of informations i gained form the forum and the wiki in my personal wiki at home (separate wiki only for herald ). when i'm back at home, i will publish these informations in a new wiki and post it here. propably, we can show how comfortable mediawiki and the design is and then propably the admins will use mediawiki

Someone to keep the wiki up to date.

Hi everyone.
I'd like to start out by saying that most of you don't know me as I haven't done anything (yet) to help the community. However, in an effort to contribute something I'm proposing that I will help to keep the wiki up to date. I have learned most of the syntax to MediaWiki and have gone through and cleaned up our section. I believe the wiki idea is an awesome (and easy) way to find info as it is needed. I have really been enjoying editing the wiki and hope you guys will help me by letting me know when your ROMs are updated so I can update the wiki. Keep in mind that it is still open for anyone to edit and that I'm not asking for a "Wiki Mod" type of position, I just want to help. If you have anything you want posted to the wiki and don't want to do it yourself, my gmail is mbobino(at)gmail.com, or you can send me a PM and I'll update it as soon as possible.
Here's a link for anyone who wants it:Hero CDMA Wiki
I didn't see what it looked like before, but it looks good.
Nice job
Looks damn good and clean. Keep it up buddy.
Great job!!
The only things I can think of that should be added are more Guides:
-How to adb (I know someone wrote a thread somewhere but can't find it atm)
-How to use adb to remove Sprint Nascar, Stocks, etc.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=581635 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=581976
-How to boot into recovery/do stuff in recovery/nandroid
BTW this needs to be stickied or posted as an announcement in all subforums (General, Q&A, Development, Themes) because much too often I've seen the same question asked 10 times/week...
glad someone is doing it finally.
Thanks for all the support guys.
I'm working on adding more guides tonight. I'll write up an in depth guide on ADB. I don't think one has been done to the extent I have in mind.
