Hi everyone
I've been searching for an answer to this for a long time now!
I need to do a hard reset to solve a niggling ActiveSynch problem (At least I hope it'll solve it!)
However when I did this before with the old XDA I I lost all my SMS messeges, both Received and Sent! Che pizza!!
As an incurable romantic I would hate for this to happen with my XDA II.
Is there anyone who can point me towards a method or a program that will securely backup and restore these precious utterances?
Sincerest thank in advance!
Conor
Sprite pocket backup allows backing up of email/sms to storage card.
Will it back up JUST the sms messages?
Thanks for that!
I've read the Sprite website and downloaded the trial version.
However, It's not too clear to me if the program will backup and then restore JUST the text messages.
I'm a bit out of my depth here but I'm guessing if I backup and then restore the entire XDA I'll lose whatever benefit the fresh hard reset might have given me as regards the underlying Activesych problem.
Can anyone confirm that Sprite can be used just for text messages alone? Everything else will resynch with outlook and my shared files etc. I can reinstall the other programs afresh. Just queasy about my vulnerable texts!
Best regards
You can do a partial restore of just messages.
Wait - Sprite Backup has problems with SMS
The current Sprite back-up CAN restore your SMS messages, but it kills SMS reception after a restore.
Your only option is to restore WITHOUT the SMS'es.
Sprite is working on a new version, don't rely on Sprite to back-up your SMS'es yet.
I am copying the content of the SMS'es from my girlfriend to a HPC Notes document. That way they get back-ed up to my PC automatically.

Michael
Do not miss this free software( SPStudio )...:
http://smartdev.51.net/
It can Backup all your SMS in any folder  ...
Do NOT buy Sprite Backup!!!!
Here I am again - almost 24 hours later - one whole day of my life gone - and I'm fairly sickened!!
I coughed up €30 or so for Sprite's Backup premium edition and - you know how long it takes - backing up restoring etc... - got through it in the end.
Everything looked good - SMS were restored. BUT my mid-afternoon had a strange feeling that something was wrong. NO SMS messages received all day!!!
Then I read Michael's advice which came too late for me!!! [Thanks all the same though Michael! ]
Sprite will take your money, allow you to do a nifty looking restore of everything including your SMS, BUT THEY TAKE AWAY YOUR ABILITY TO RECEIVE MESSAGES!!!
I am hopping mad!
There seems to be plans for a fix in a few week's time, and even a complicated interim workaround, but these are USELESS if the messages you are trying to save have already been trapped in a dodgy backup that neuters your SMS box!!!
Now I doubt I'll EVER restore those messages...
How can they be allowed to sell that junk? I will be insisting on my money back.
In the meantime, I don't suppose anyone knows how to salvage those messages from a knackered backup of my whole XDA II?
I know there are more important things in life than old text messages, but this is VERY annoying. Thanks for listening to this rant...
Thanks too to Alkandery75 but that program you suggest doesn't seem to work with Pocket PC, seems only for smartphones.
By the way, does anyone know why Microsoft doesn't integrate the Pocket PC SMS folder with Outlook? Seems like a glaringly obvious improvement to me!
Best regards to all
Conor
Sprite did work great for ppc 2002
Sprite really did Restore SMS with PPC 2002 but since 2003 you loose all further incomming SMS.
Solution to that is Cleanmail.exe from Spritesoft (which kills all your mail-folders ).
Sprite is working on that and has a pre-Release of Version 2.3 which you can get if you send them an email.
2.3 does restore SMS properly and you still can receive SMS. It has some other Bugs but i can live with them (as long as the final 2.3 comes out).
But i hope the final will be available soon 8) 8)

Fidl
Does anybody know by what mechanism there is a block on receiving sms after restore using Sprite?
Sprite Kills SMS - not just blocks them!
I should clarify that the Sprite Backup and Restore not only blocks incoming SMS but it actually finishes them off for good!
In other words, and I've verified this with another phone this, you will not get them all by later putting your SIM in another phone. And people who've sent messages to you DO get their usual instant notifications that you've received a message when in fact you haven't a clue!!
For anyone in business this could really create a poor show with clients.
Yes, it's been a bad day!
Thanks fellas!

Hello Conor,
I'm so sorry you face what I face long time back, and after a full week of researching, testing and HardResetting my XDA II, I found this nice free software (SPStudio). Also, I found that it is the only way for Safe Backup and Restore for SMS, as you said it has been designed originally for SmartPhones, but that does not mean it is not working for PPC WM2003 PE, it is working like charm, you have to give it a try  ... I'm sure you will never stop using it...
So Sprite is physically poking memory on the sim card and destroying the ability to use the sim for sms in any other phone too, man that sux. Is this only when you backup/restore just sms because if it does it when using full backup it means my sim is knackered too, has anybody found out if it is possible for the service provider to re-enable sms on the sim?
Too late. Just discovered my sim is bankaxed, cannot receive sms messages even though sender gets delivery report confirmed
Restoring SMS'es
Connor:
1. Make a fresh back-up, but don't overwrite the original
1. Restore your SMS'es using Sprite
2. Using Cut and Paste, copy the content to another application - i use HPC Notes Professional. This will create a back-up copy on your PC
3. Hard-reset and restore the backup minus SMS
You now have your working PPC back - and the text of the SMS'es saved. I use HPC Notes Proffesional to save those SMS'es from my girlfriend that I like to keep.
I actually like Sprite Backup, compared to x-Backup it is very fast and once the problem is fixed, it looks perfect. I have done a restore with Sprite from my SD card several times and it just works.
Sorry the warning came to late.
Regards
Michael
I wasnt too bothered about my old sms so I did as you said, hard reset, restore without sms option, now my sms messages are enabled again on my sim card.
SPStudio?

Hi again Alkandery75!
Thanks for that! I did try to install it but it didn't work. If it's working fine for you on an XDA II then I obviously didn't install it correctly. It seems complicated - CAB files etc. Out of my depth! Would you be able to spare a couple of minutes to post here the step-by-steps to get it installed and working?
Renewed thanks!

Thanks for that Bodstrup!
Can you tell me if you copy those SMS one by one with that program? Or will it actually copy the whole folder, dates, times etc.?
Cheers
Conor
HPC Notes Professional
No, this is a one-by-one cut and paste operation.
What I like by HPC Notes Professional is:
1. You have all notes in one database, not scattered in individual files.
2. It supports bullets, numbered lists, various fonts, colors etc
3. It can password protect individual notes as required
4. It syncronizes with the PC, offering you a very nice Windows GUI to view or edit notes. Edit in either end, and the other device will get the update immediately (if connected in the cradle/using USB)
5. They have a 30 day trial.

Yes! Yes! Yes! SmartPhone Studio is de BIZ!!!
Excellent! Thank you Alkandery75 for pointing me to it!
It's exactly what I was looking for! All I wanted was a simple safe SMS backup/restore utility. Could I possibly be the only one wanting this? Anyway SmartPhone Studio seems to be the cat's pyjamas.
It connects perfectly with XDA II. It makes backups [and claims to restore them too naturally, but after the last couple of days I think I can't face another hard re-set just to check it. And anyway all my old messages are finally let go - apart from a few classics that I just cut and pasted!! ;-) ]
SMS Cool! Is hardly worth paying for in my humble opinion because there's no backup and restore function. But this dude who created SmartPhone Studio should be paid. I can't believe it's free. Maybe Sprite should take him on!
Anyway my thanks to all who helped with this - especially Alkandery75. The whole sorry tale above might help a kindred soul somewhere. I have made a small contribution to this site in gratitude.
Best regards
Conor
hi,
well i am pretty collective in nature as far as sms is concerned,
right now its loaded with more than 250 sms and i really like to
keep as a collection.
well recently i decided to hard reset my xda but i know all the sms archive
will get erased if done so...
so anyone who knows how to back up the sms ........
Try Sprite backup software
I think this is the program you are looking for! I Found this the No1 backup software there is out there at this moment! It's super FAST
and there is a sms backup option in it!
To download this program for beta-testing purposes go to this forum:

Make sure you get the latest version of sprite backup otherwise you will end up being unable to receive any sms messages.
Is Sprite Now working?
Hi!
I think you could answer my post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=5854&start=25
shortly... it seems that current version is 3.0, is this one free from the SMS back-up problem?
Thanks,
Chris
Hi,
does anyone know how I can copy my SMS and telephone-Database to another phone.
I want to reinstall my MDA II and I don't want to loose all my sms and my telephone entries (shorcuts).
How can I copy them?
Erik
Make a backup and then restore those databases. I recommend Sprite Backup software highly for this, and general daily backups.
Well.. Whatever Your Current Cell is.. You Can use the "mPhone 2.6"..
It's at: http://www.mobem.com/products/mphone26/index.php
As It's able to Grap All your Phonebook, SMS, Dialer, Logo and Ringtone... Plus Many more Features..
Pretty Cool bit.[/url]
Some of you may have heard of this. This is for those looking for a backups solution for their SMS messages. It does not work with MMS.
I did not make this.
http://android.riteshsahu.com/apps/sms-backup-restore
For people who wipe and flash ROMs as often as I do, this is a perfect solution for saving those text messages.
Post up alternate methods if you have any.
Please donate to this guy. He can't put up a paid version because he lives in Australia.
+1
I've been using this for a few days now and have come to rely on it. Very easy to use, although I was not aware it wouldn't back up MMS messages.
Titanium is much better. Will backup SMS/MMS storage file in about 1-2 seconds and restore in the same amount of time.
could have swore i saw another program called mms backup on appbrain.
and where in titanium does it have the option for sms and/or mms backup? cant seem to locate it.

I've been using Titanium for a while now too, but didn't know it backed up SMS! Can you direct me to the element where the SMS/MMS stuff is stored?
Edit: Nevermind, I found them in the backup list. I had not noticed them before. It also backs up bookmarks and (appears to) your Sense config!

It's called Dialer Storage aka SMS/MMS/APN in the list.
Can anyone recommend an app to backup and restore messages?
Thanks

I have seen that, and others, in the Market.
Because there are many to choose from, I guess what I should have asked is if anyone has used and likes any one in particular.
sms backup by michele valentini works great.
I was curious about this too so I tried out SMS backup & restore by Ritesh Sahu just now.
I was able to make a complete copy of all of my messages (about 200 texts) in a xml file stored on my SD card. I then deleted the messages off of my phone and tried restoring using the backup. Everything seems to be back in the original place.
One thing that was nice was the ability to view the texts from the backup without having to restore them. This might be useful to have a copy of the text somewhere but not on the phone itself.
I haven't extensively used the app but first go through is positive, and there are many thousands of ratings on the marketplace for the app.

you can also try my backup pro, it's a paid app but you can backup your MMS and SMS to your sd card or online. You can also backup your call history/call log, your calendar, alarms and apps....
