Copy telephone and SMS database to other phone - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

Hi,
does anyone know how I can copy my SMS and telephone-Database to another phone.
I want to reinstall my MDA II and I don't want to loose all my sms and my telephone entries (shorcuts).
How can I copy them?
Erik

Make a backup and then restore those databases. I recommend Sprite Backup software highly for this, and general daily backups.

Well.. Whatever Your Current Cell is.. You Can use the "mPhone 2.6"..
It's at: http://www.mobem.com/products/mphone26/index.php
As It's able to Grap All your Phonebook, SMS, Dialer, Logo and Ringtone... Plus Many more Features..

SMS Backup Restore XDA II

Hi everyone
I've been searching for an answer to this for a long time now!
I need to do a hard reset to solve a niggling ActiveSynch problem (At least I hope it'll solve it!)
However when I did this before with the old XDA I I lost all my SMS messeges, both Received and Sent! Che pizza!!
As an incurable romantic I would hate for this to happen with my XDA II.
Is there anyone who can point me towards a method or a program that will securely backup and restore these precious utterances?
Sincerest thank in advance!
Conor
Sprite pocket backup allows backing up of email/sms to storage card.
Will it back up JUST the sms messages?
Thanks for that!
I've read the Sprite website and downloaded the trial version.
However, It's not too clear to me if the program will backup and then restore JUST the text messages.
I'm a bit out of my depth here but I'm guessing if I backup and then restore the entire XDA I'll lose whatever benefit the fresh hard reset might have given me as regards the underlying Activesych problem.
Can anyone confirm that Sprite can be used just for text messages alone? Everything else will resynch with outlook and my shared files etc. I can reinstall the other programs afresh. Just queasy about my vulnerable texts!
Best regards
You can do a partial restore of just messages.
Wait - Sprite Backup has problems with SMS
The current Sprite back-up CAN restore your SMS messages, but it kills SMS reception after a restore.
Your only option is to restore WITHOUT the SMS'es.
Sprite is working on a new version, don't rely on Sprite to back-up your SMS'es yet.
I am copying the content of the SMS'es from my girlfriend to a HPC Notes document. That way they get back-ed up to my PC automatically.

Do not miss this free software( SPStudio )...:

It can Backup all your SMS in any folder  ...
Do NOT buy Sprite Backup!!!!
Here I am again - almost 24 hours later - one whole day of my life gone - and I'm fairly sickened!!
I coughed up €30 or so for Sprite's Backup premium edition and - you know how long it takes - backing up restoring etc... - got through it in the end.
Everything looked good - SMS were restored. BUT my mid-afternoon had a strange feeling that something was wrong. NO SMS messages received all day!!!
Then I read Michael's advice which came too late for me!!! [Thanks all the same though Michael! ]
Sprite will take your money, allow you to do a nifty looking restore of everything including your SMS, BUT THEY TAKE AWAY YOUR ABILITY TO RECEIVE MESSAGES!!!
I am hopping mad!
There seems to be plans for a fix in a few week's time, and even a complicated interim workaround, but these are USELESS if the messages you are trying to save have already been trapped in a dodgy backup that neuters your SMS box!!!
Now I doubt I'll EVER restore those messages...
How can they be allowed to sell that junk? I will be insisting on my money back.
In the meantime, I don't suppose anyone knows how to salvage those messages from a knackered backup of my whole XDA II?
I know there are more important things in life than old text messages, but this is VERY annoying. Thanks for listening to this rant...
Thanks too to Alkandery75 but that program you suggest doesn't seem to work with Pocket PC, seems only for smartphones.
By the way, does anyone know why Microsoft doesn't integrate the Pocket PC SMS folder with Outlook? Seems like a glaringly obvious improvement to me!
Best regards to all
Conor
Sprite did work great for ppc 2002
Sprite really did Restore SMS with PPC 2002 but since 2003 you loose all further incomming SMS.
Solution to that is Cleanmail.exe from Spritesoft (which kills all your mail-folders ).
Sprite is working on that and has a pre-Release of Version 2.3 which you can get if you send them an email.
2.3 does restore SMS properly and you still can receive SMS. It has some other Bugs but i can live with them (as long as the final 2.3 comes out).
But i hope the final will be available soon 8) 8)

Fidl
Does anybody know by what mechanism there is a block on receiving sms after restore using Sprite?
Sprite Kills SMS - not just blocks them!
I should clarify that the Sprite Backup and Restore not only blocks incoming SMS but it actually finishes them off for good!
In other words, and I've verified this with another phone this, you will not get them all by later putting your SIM in another phone. And people who've sent messages to you DO get their usual instant notifications that you've received a message when in fact you haven't a clue!!
For anyone in business this could really create a poor show with clients.
Yes, it's been a bad day!
Thanks fellas!

Hello Conor,
I'm so sorry you face what I face long time back, and after a full week of researching, testing and HardResetting my XDA II, I found this nice free software (SPStudio). Also, I found that it is the only way for Safe Backup and Restore for SMS, as you said it has been designed originally for SmartPhones, but that does not mean it is not working for PPC WM2003 PE, it is working like charm, you have to give it a try  ... I'm sure you will never stop using it...
So Sprite is physically poking memory on the sim card and destroying the ability to use the sim for sms in any other phone too, man that sux. Is this only when you backup/restore just sms because if it does it when using full backup it means my sim is knackered too, has anybody found out if it is possible for the service provider to re-enable sms on the sim?
Too late. Just discovered my sim is bankaxed, cannot receive sms messages even though sender gets delivery report confirmed
Restoring SMS'es
Connor:
1. Make a fresh back-up, but don't overwrite the original
1. Restore your SMS'es using Sprite
2. Using Cut and Paste, copy the content to another application - i use HPC Notes Professional. This will create a back-up copy on your PC
3. Hard-reset and restore the backup minus SMS
You now have your working PPC back - and the text of the SMS'es saved. I use HPC Notes Proffesional to save those SMS'es from my girlfriend that I like to keep.
I actually like Sprite Backup, compared to x-Backup it is very fast and once the problem is fixed, it looks perfect. I have done a restore with Sprite from my SD card several times and it just works.
Sorry the warning came to late.
Regards
Michael
I wasnt too bothered about my old sms so I did as you said, hard reset, restore without sms option, now my sms messages are enabled again on my sim card.

Hi again Alkandery75!
Thanks for that! I did try to install it but it didn't work. If it's working fine for you on an XDA II then I obviously didn't install it correctly. It seems complicated - CAB files etc. Out of my depth! Would you be able to spare a couple of minutes to post here the step-by-steps to get it installed and working?
Renewed thanks!

Can you tell me if you copy those SMS one by one with that program? Or will it actually copy the whole folder, dates, times etc.?
Cheers

HPC Notes Professional
No, this is a one-by-one cut and paste operation.
What I like by HPC Notes Professional is:
1. You have all notes in one database, not scattered in individual files.
2. It supports bullets, numbered lists, various fonts, colors etc
3. It can password protect individual notes as required
4. It syncronizes with the PC, offering you a very nice Windows GUI to view or edit notes. Edit in either end, and the other device will get the update immediately (if connected in the cradle/using USB)
5. They have a 30 day trial.

Yes! Yes! Yes! SmartPhone Studio is de BIZ!!!
Excellent! Thank you Alkandery75 for pointing me to it!
It's exactly what I was looking for! All I wanted was a simple safe SMS backup/restore utility. Could I possibly be the only one wanting this? Anyway SmartPhone Studio seems to be the cat's pyjamas.
It connects perfectly with XDA II. It makes backups [and claims to restore them too naturally, but after the last couple of days I think I can't face another hard re-set just to check it. And anyway all my old messages are finally let go - apart from a few classics that I just cut and pasted!! ;-) ]
SMS Cool! Is hardly worth paying for in my humble opinion because there's no backup and restore function. But this dude who created SmartPhone Studio should be paid. I can't believe it's free. Maybe Sprite should take him on!
Anyway my thanks to all who helped with this - especially Alkandery75. The whole sorry tale above might help a kindred soul somewhere. I have made a small contribution to this site in gratitude.
Best regards

saving SMS messages to PC ??

How is it done if possible?
Is it possible to backup only Datas and not applications...?
.. need help before doing a hard reset.. Thank you
Sprite Backup can do this. The professional version can back-up directly to a PC.
www.spritesoftware.com.
You do need the pre-release of version 2.3 - the current 2.14 will not work - or rather, if you restore a 2.1x backup, you kill the ability to receive SMS'es.
The pre-release has a few issues, but I have succesfully performed both backup and restore with this version.

Michael
well if you only want to copy sms from your xda you dont need any software... you can find all your sms from all folders in folder windows\messaging
they are .mpb files but they are merely text files chang their extensions and there you are...

can you expound? what issues are these (so i know if they also concern me or not hehehe)
also is the pre release an eval version (expiring?) or does it accept a registered serial number?
cheers,

if i copy these files from windows messaging, then reset my device, install a new rom etc and then copy them back into this folder later, will it restore all sms as well as the sms folders???
thanks

Mephistodan ---> You are my hero!!! Thanks. Why o why hasn't anyone mentioned this anywhere in my search for a way to backup sms messages!!!
Not perfect, but all I really need is to save sent and recieved sms's ;-)
Thanks again!
I think the is the tip of tips... IMHO!
WM2003/xbackup can handle everything else for backup, as far as I am concerned.
F**K sprite and all other pay stuff for just the sms backup.
Personally, I think MS will (AND should) integrate sms and mms as folders in future outlook versions.

Maybe I was a bit quick to reply... I have some 0 byte files (looks like my inbox), yet I can't find the message of the sms's recieved?
The ones I have sent (and e-mail inbox) appear fine as i rewrite the mpb extensions to text...
so my question is...
where are the inbox files hiding? In the att files (attachments folder)? I don't think so, but mephistodan do you know where the recieved sms's are located, as these are really the ones I mostly would like to keep.

Talking to myself...
Now using dbExplorer (nice prog. -> think I may buy this one) to find the data in the database. The SMS inbox is called something like fldrXXXXXXX and dbExplorer lets you export the db to a *.csv file easy to use in Excel.
Works for me... no more worries that sms data is lost. I guess with some fiddeling, you could easily replace these into the database as well.

cannot receive any new SMS

hi all
i just found out that i cannot receivce any sms anymore.
this is really hard to notice if you don't KNOW that someone is sending you an sms . so i can't tell till when it did work, and when it stopped working.
anyone got the same problem before? this happened to me the second time now, and the only solution (for me) was to HARD reset the device (which is no real fun ).
any ideas?
regards ize|man
Have you, after doing a ROM install, carried out a Sprite Backup Restore?
If so, that's your problem.
Don't ask me why (just do a search on this forum for more users examples), but when you restore the SMS/Email folders as part of a Sprite Backup restore, it corrupts the sms so that notifications are not shown, and the messages are not listed/stored.
In effect, invisible sms.
So far, I've not heard a single response to any user from the peeps at Sprite about this, even though this is a common and widely known problem now. But to be fair, i don't wish to be too harsh, as I find it a life saving application. How I got round it was to run the restore option on the phone NOT the PC (as this is the only way you can do a SELECTIVE restore of items), and unticked anything relating to sms/emails.
Then I found I had a decent restored phone (albeit minus any emails/sms), but with SMS working properly.
Let me know if this might be the case with you...
@shadamere
i'm afraid you're damn right i did use sprite backup - and i did (of course) restore my sms folder and me inbox folder.
i thought about that possibility as well - but wasn't sure of course. now that you're telling me it's sprite backup i can search for that in the forum.
and, i agree with you too: it is a very important app for me as well because i like playing around with a lot of programs ans roms ect....
thanks a lot for the help
bzw: maybe this could help: i just read about a sprite backup 3.0 (though no info on the homepage so far)
regards ize|man
had the same problem...
I had the same problem; ended up having to flash the damn thing and re-install all of my applications.
I DO use Sprite Backup, but I have no idea if I had done a restore or not and whether that terminated the capability.
HELP AND ADVICE TO BOTH OF YOU THEN...
If you haven't done too much to your phone since the problem, do a HARD RESET, and then re-install Sprite Backup (the APPLICATION, not the data), onto your XDA.
Then, connect to your PC, and run the PC Service (needed for a restore if you saved the file to PC).
Now run the Sprite Backup program, ON YOUR DEVICE - this is important!
Choose the data file you have, that you wish to restore from, BUT, then go through the various options where you can tick or untick what you want to restore.
UNtick anything relating to the Email and SMS folders etc, and then start the restore process.
This SHOULD (if done properly), leave you with an XDA with all your apps, videos, photos etc etc on, and able to receive SMS messages as normal.
The only downside is that you will have lost any stored sms etc that you might have had.
But it's MUCH more preferable to an XDA with NONE of your data on at all.
Hope this advice is useful to you, and doesn't arrive too late!
Or alternatively download CleanMail from their website and run it, this requires a soft reset but cleans up the mail/sms system and it will work again.
It also deletes all existing mails.
i also had the same problem with spirate & what i do is restore without sms message & e-mail but i use spstudio to back them up, so after restoring with spirate i use sp studio & retrieve my sms's  long way but something stupid in the sms db wich i think it is due to the constant changing of the db headers that doesn't allow u to retrieve message with db u need a program that talks to the inbox only & not the db
I had this exact same problem!! I never received any SMS messages telling me that I had voicemail and I had about 10 messages and people pissed off because I never called them back! I used the tool on the Sprite website and POOF all the problems went away. I lost all of my prior messages, but not receiving SMS's was worse  !
- Cheers
It's a SWINE to find on the Sprite website, so here's the direct link to CleanMail for any that need it...

WOW!
This is the first I've heard of this CleanMail program thanks for the link. 8)
OK, Sprite Backup 3.0 Pre-Release now restores SMS/POP/IMAP correctly.
http://www.spritesoftware.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=971
We'll be making it the official release, depending on customer feedback obviously (its a release candidate).
Any existing backup files will need to be restored with email deselected. From then on Sprite Backup 3.0 will backup/restore email/SMS services correctly.

SMS Backup

I've done a search here / google / www.freewareppc.com and still couldn't find the SMS backup tool that I have seen floating around before. I believe SCHAPS has it on his ROM but I am unable to locate it anywhere.
If somebody would be so kind to post it or link I would be very grateful.
Thanks in advance.
Peronaly i use PIM Backup. Used it to successfully transfer SMS and Contacts from one Trinity to another.
sms backup
here you go. this is always my favorite application.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=300689&highlight=jeyo+sms+backup
Even i'll give points to PIM Backup, one of the best applications, i ever had.
Very compact and light application, but with advanced functionality. Can take a backup of messages, tasks, call log, contacts, speed dials, tasks etc. all at the same time. On top of that, you can schedule the time of backup, at which it will create a backup file, that too everyday. So that your backup is up to date.
It would be already there in some other threads, still postin' you a copy.
Adieu..

[Q] duplicate entries calling list

Hi guys,
Im running blackstone new V rom for a while now. I recently returned to a backup cause of a crash of the phone. Now i restored all my stuff perfectly but one question still remains for me. When i call a person or when a person calls me in de call list all entries are now double. So every call i make of have taken is places double in the call list.
I know i have seen this problem before but cant remember how to fix it. Maybe somebody can help me remember.
Gr Alexander
what backup software did you use?
a full backup suite like spb backup, resco backup...
or a backup solution for pim data only like pimbackup or ms myphone?
i don't know how important your past call logs are to you, but every solution that comes to mind includes deleting them.
- you could simply delete the logs and see if new entries are created twice as well then. OR
- after you have restored your backup, create a new backup not including your call logs, hard reset (or delete pim data, depending on your backup type) and restore the new backup, which does not include call logs.
