want to ask two general question for PPC phone - Advantage X7500, MDA Ameo General

1. how to delete all contacts in one go? as I am going to pass my XDA orbit to someone else after removing all my personal contact. But i want to keep all the installed program. therefore, i want to know is there any way without hard reset?
2. how to reset call duration statistic each month? as i want to keep track of my bill.
thx in advance!

1) Rename pim.vol and then soft reset. then delete the renamed pim.vol..unless your contacts are on sim.
2) not sure there is a way to reset call duration with native app. Some third party apps, track specific time frames..but you do know that the call duration times will not match your bill, right? Bills usually round up for each call.. Some companies round up to the next minute, some to next 30 second or 15 second mark..so it really won't match anyway

thanks eagle,
i will try yr first solution. as for the second issue, i am getting a package rate for 1000 minutes. that is the reason i want to have a rough idea how many allowance is left before getting charged for excess usage.

You didn't mention which provider your using, but most provider's have an online lookup for your current and past usage which may be more relevant.

i do check online billing. but as handy check, i still want to figure out how to reset that call duration monthly.
BTW, yr first tip works well. thx again.

This one was dealt with qiute a few times in the Uni forum. Basically, the answer is (a) it's very difficult and (b) noone should show you how to do it. Although you want it for legitimate purposes, most people don't (i.e. passing a used phone off as new).
The simple answer is to take a note of the stats every month or check online if your provider allows it.

[help from universal owner needed] GSMbeam

It seems like I have been working on this for a very long time. This is the most complicated thing I have ever done yet at the same time easy to use.
http://odeean.veritel.com.au/programming_files/gsmbeam.htm
http://odeean.veritel.com.au/downloads_files/GSMbeam.exe
GSMbeam is what it sounds like. Two people can use it to beam stuff over the phone. No gprs, no special lines needed. Most sims from most networks (here in Australia anyway), prepaid or account will do this no problems.
The idea is that you leave it on all the time. Don't worry about wasted cpu time or battery life because most of the time the threads are in wait states doing nothing. When you push off there is no processing by GSMbeam, the hardware "wakes up" the device when a call comes in, and then it does its thing.
This beta release has an expiration date at the end of September. After that time it will do nothing.
It can send very small or large files. I have been using it to send pictures from my camera, about 150KB. I have not tested it with VERY large files. One reason why it's beta is that I have not tested it in critically low memory environments. So if you run out of memory the theory is that it will just stop doing what its doing.
I do not recommend changing most of the settings, but if you do, remember that the gsm phone network is slow so it will not get you a miraculous speed increase.
If your phone plan has no flag fall then to send 22kb (mms size) is cheaper. To send a GSMbeam long text message is not worth it for small messages because the connection time of the two modems outways the savings. For long messages it can be cheaper. If you pay 15 cents a message then 10 messages is a $1.50, the same amount of characters costs me about 50 cents.
This also has the built in shortcut generator.
The object this creates is more versatile than what I have used it for here. In future versions I am considering opening it up to be accessed from other programs. I have done a couple of tests using a file as a buffer for data then some named events to signal read and write times. Because of this there is file in the config folder that is only getting flushed when the program is turned off and restarted. if you were to go a month without doing so and had received a lot of data in that time it could grow too big.
..Enjoy.
<edit>
this is embaressing but...
I found a bug alredy. If a file comes in the phone is not getting restarted until after the accept/reject dialog is dismissed. This means that if you receive a file but do not notice you can't receive another call until the os restarts the phone. This normally is about 3 minutes. I will fix for next version.
wow nice app thanks!
i posted it in my blog.
I added a list of known problems at the bottom of its page. If any other bugs pop up just post them here.
oldsap - Thanks for putting it on your site. I would not describe it as freeware. Freeware would not have an expiration date. That is in the about dialog, but I added it to the GSMbeam page to make sure people know whats going on.

Cool software. Now all I need is more people who I can transfer with.
Thats why the core functionality will always be free (ie receiving any size file/message + sending messages and small size file). When it gets a final release you would be able to purchase a copy to send your big stuff ang give all your friends a copy so you have someone to send to. Can I take it that it worked on your device?.
I have fixed the bug where the phone is not restarted for 3 minutes. The phone now gets restarted about 10 seconds after a call ends. Incoming files get qued for acceptence. The user sees a dialog asking to accept/reject. If more than 1 is in the que a series of dialogs pops up, each in turn after the result of the first (not all at once). also I fixed a bug where the minimize was malfunctioning after one of the modal dialogs was displayed. Hopefully now when GSMbeam is minimised it dose so without disrupting the ok button in other programs. version 0.194 is now at the link.

Oh sorry, ill try to change it to shareware
could you explain a little more on how many sms equivalent is uses per kb of file sent?
I don't know exactly what you mean. It dose not use any sms to send anything. It uses the same kind of call you would talk over, except instead of talking the modems talk. The numbers of characters in an sms could be sent in much less than 1 second. The only problem is that the modems need around 10-15 seconds to connect with each other. On my phone account I pay 20 flag fall and 1 cent per second. So for a page of text in a message it would cost me around 21 cents. For a much longer message, say 5 pages (on the ppc screen) it would cost me 22-25 cents.
If you are sending files that are bigger than the packet size (most would be) then there is some overhead. There are two "layers" working in GSMbeam each with its own small amount of headder information in a packet for that layer. This is really insignificant though. For sending images the cost is higher. Images are normally relitively large in relation to text. You would have to test it with your own account to see what it costs. with many phone accounts there are free times or free minute from phones in the same network. If you have such free periods then GSMbeam costs nothing to use. When I call my wife it costs me nothing if I have "vodafone to vodafone minutes" left that month.
oh now i get it. ( sorry for being so stupid )
so it uses call time. great! i have free unlimited calls to the same network as mine so that means it would be free to send files to the same netowrk?
Correct. Thats beautiful hey! In Australia they make us pay through the nose for anything to do with data, but now there is a way around it. Imagine, here it cost 75c for a 22kb mms. The picture quality is not that good and there is complication in getting the correct sim and configuring it.
this is a very useful app. thanks again. btw, any chance of porting it to smartphones and also nokia phones?
I can't do smartphone because I do not have one. This kind of thing dose not work properly on the mulator. As for nokia, I have no idea how to program one.
Thanks a bunch
Great Shareware
works on MIO A701
NAdavi.
Thank you for the confirmation assasins. The hope of definite works/fails feedback on the functionality is the main reason I post here. If anyone finds it dose not work, thats what the diagnostic logging mode is for in the settings. After veiwing the log it may be possible for me to find any bugs.
I just found a new bug. In 2003 and 2005 devices, if you change the settings it crashes. It looks like it still works but really its kapoot and needs to be turned off then on again. I was testing on an old xda a lot and it did not happen there so I failed to notice it. I will update with a fix soon. I also thought I fixed the problem hiding the main window, but again its popped back up, but it only seems to happen on my mini.
<edit>
I have fixed this. Version 0.195 is on my site now. The problem was I was calling free on a pointer pointing to memory not allocate by malloc or realloc. I wouldn't have expected it to go so badly.
The OK button thing has really beaten me. I have changed the main dialog minimize to the X and it seems to work. The funny thing is, it is still producing an IDOK and I am still responding to it in the same way. Only now when the dialog get hidden so dose the menu.
version 0.196 is now at the link.
This fixes the on/off functionality of the call filtering so now you can set up the black list and turn it off at will. I also streamlined code in various threads to allow a more swift response to incoming calls. This lets the phone be turned off faster on slower devices so there is less chance of the phone giving a ring.
Get GSMbeam for FREE
I think GSMbeam is finished now. I have fixed many bugs including a malfunction in the stop button. I have added functionality like a que for incomming text messages so more than one can be stored. The incoming messages can now be sent to the clipboard or log file after reading. I added the option to have a sound notification. I added a preview window for image files in the file open dialog. I also put in the password registration. Its based on the hardware ID of the device.
I would like more people to use this before I feel happy calling it finished. If anyone would like to download this and post their hardware ID in this thread (the one generated by GSMbeam) I will pm the first 20-30 a registration code - that is if there is anyone interested.

Need Help Understanding My HD

is there any kind of option or tweak or whatever for the mobile internet use of this thing. On any other normal phone you would get they ask for permission to access your internet if it needs to. this thing ends up costing you a fortune when youre new to it. yes ive now unchecked update weather and stock things but it still does it in some instances without me knowing. when i was on google maps i think even though i was using wifi at the time!
while im on one the text messaging on this thing is a joke. why the hell is there like 2 interface sort of things with it. the one on the sense thing sucks as when you go to reply and it says 'tap to compose text' it takes 20 million taps to do anything. not to mention when you do eventually hit send after having to rewrite half of it coz it looks like its written in german it goes to your outbox without sending. the times i have been waiting for a reply for about 2 hours only to discover that its not been sent!
first job, go and instal either all the hot fixes on the htc website, or better still a full rom update if it will letyou.
sounds like you are still on the original rom which quite frankly sucks for many people.
About the net stuff: Smartphones like the one you just got, or an iphone to get a more popular reference ( ) are pretty much meant to be connected to the net all the time, and thus used with a data plan that suits it.
If you want to disable mobile connections just do a little search for Modaco NoData.
I sincerely get upset by this kind of messages. It is his/hers first message on this forum and it's only negative in the sense that the device is not doing what he/she wants. When do people realize that they need time to get to know what there/this device can/cannot do before posting threads with stupid titles.
Sigh!!
There *are* notifications warning the user that using apps like weather auto-update will use data connection and may incur charges. They only appear once, when launching an app for the first time. So it's not really phones fault that you didn't read them.
I believe it's not the phone that is stupid in this case.
Yeah, you need to update. The latest 1.66 ROM should fix your sms issues as well as a couple other ones.
As mentioned, these modern "smartphones" are made to be connected to the net 24/7. As some of their main selling points is the automatic updates of your social networking sites and what not. I personally do not use those features and have them all turned off. I personally have never seen an iPhone sold without a data plan as that is just pointless.
I would look into getting an unlimted data plan (which this phone warns you to have) or get that Nodata thing.
Smartphone my ringpiece. If its that smart why cant it just ask you if you want to connect via contract internet? I do use the internet on it a lot but mainly wifi so i dont see it being worth paying for unlimited usage. Wether I want to do that or not isnt anything to do with the question.
Don't get me wrong I like the phone but my main beef is that these bloody companies release most their products only half finished. If your paying as much as you are for these things you expect to be able to send a god damn message.
As for so called warning messages i didnt get any of this. And of course you expect something like this to "do what you want". You dont expect to buy a £600 phone to not be able to text someone. If you're so 'upset' by this message then why bother replying. Maybe leave it to someone who can actually be a bit more informative.

You had your answers. For the SMS issue install the hotfixes, or better flash the latest ROM. For data, delete the internet settings or get NoData, or this.
An iPhone doesn't let you disable internet connection by default either.

how to set timer back

when you go settings-->telephone info -->software info on the bottom you find usage, the timers of incomming and outgoing conversations.
how can I get that to go back to 0.
I'm willing to sell my phone and want it to be as clean as it comes new out of the box.
thank you
First, it is not right to do that (you would not like others to do that to you)
Secondly, thanks god (for the others), there is no way you can do that...
If your reason is not to leave any personal information on the phone, then flash it with a stock ROM and wipe the SD card (assuming that you are supplying it with the phone).
If your reason is to con somebody into thinking that they are getting a brand new phone, then can you give me your ebay account name so I can keep well away from anything you sell?

I always think of this feature as specifically there for things like this: you can't try to sell the phone as brand spanking new because the call timers can never be reset & will always tell you if the phone has been used.
it's not for making people think it is new, will it isn't, but it's more something about privacy.

what is so "private" about a timer showing only usage hours? theres no info there showing anything that should be considered private or dangerous... i think you just want to make the phone appear newer than it really is...
either way, only way to do it is to flash a new ROM

[Attention] Big Data usage have reported with WP7

We have many report for big data usage on wp7 also when i usage data connection my hd2 is too hot.. that make me sceptical..
for that reason i make this thread if is not the right place please mod move it to the right place
Microsoft say: the problem coming from 3rd party apps
Some other say the problem coming from many differnet update that use the wp7 system e.g.email update, contacts update/facebook and more
Some other report says the HTC hub is one of the reason... use so much data..
That you can do is: set all account manual about the sync
Just go to settings / account and tap every account and set it manual
Fot htc hub go to in to hub and settings , do the same..
HERE you can found what Microsoft say!
HERE the report of HTC hub!!!
PS. is simply blog but have some good news.. so take a look around for other news..
Edit
Thanks for report i fix a little bit the body of the message..
I don't know if this is true or not. I am not experiencing heave data absorption without my knowledge. I can check my data consumption on the Voda website and I have a 1Gb allowance each month. I've been using WP7 as soon it went semi-public and I'm still having about 780Mb out of 1Gb left. (last update was yesterday) It is not like I am not using the internet, but I do check on mobile websites as it just renders faster and it doesn't need the zoom too often. Multitouch zoom on HD2 is a bit of a problemchild.
I do had my concerns about the social networking integration as I thought it would pull everybody's picture gallery to my phone and would upload every picture that I have to Skydrive, but that doesn't seems to be the thing.
Overall, though the WP7 was not meant for the HD2, it's going to be here for always on my phone. sob...
do you always
write your posts
like this?
and of course
you always need to
post in wrong sections?
There is not useful information in your post. "We have many report for big data usage on wp7" Who are we? What is many? Disable Data connection if you don't like traffic. Connect on Wi-Fi, log all connections from your computer and take a look where the traffic goes and you'll know what app you need to delete.
Funnily enough I just happened to check my bill after reading this and I'm up to 750mb since the start of the month. Normally I'd average about 200mb at most.
I had the HTC hub installed which has been promptly removed so I'm gonna keep an eye on it now and see if that was the cause of the massive data jump.
Pretty old news and really annoying way of writing.
why
on
earth
do
you
write
like
this????
I did notice a single big jump in data downloading on initial setup, this was because of facebook i think, not the facebook app, didnt happen until i had set that up so my feeling is its downloading pictures and other info, if you have many many friends on FB this would be exponential. anyhow, i didnt notice this until i got a out of starage space message, because my SD card hadnt worked first time round. So, if that is indeed the case and not just a huge coincidance connect up your phone to your PC and install/setup facebook, then see what happens

Nice way...!!! Do you know any program that can count the traffic? Do you have count any program?
Another thing to add to the 'Reasons to avoid WM7 like the plague and stay on Android' list.
Share Wi-Fi from your computer/laptop, connect mobile through it, install any traffic counter or firewall on your PC (or use proxy that provides logs/reports), look where your traffic is going. I don't care about traffic on my mobile at the moment, so I am not going to check it myself, but that's pretty easy task.

Simple solution. Get unlimited internet without fair usage nonsense As I usually go over 1 GB with my HD2 regardless of the OS that's what I did. You pay a little more but don't have to worry that a facebook photo may cost you 1 Euro

[BOUNTY] Ultimate thief catcher $50

Forgive me if this is in the wrong place.
As stated in the title, I'm willing to offer a $50 bounty to anyone who can create this app for me, the perfect thief catcher app. Here's how it works:
The app runs in the background constantly (possibly as a service to avoid task killers), so it must be as minimal as possible. Upon receipt of a specifically worded text message, the app will trigger the GPS and wait 5-10 minutes for full lock. After this time has passed, the app will text the GPS coordinates to a preconfigured email address and then disable the GPS.
Optional function: Activate the front facing cam (silently and invisibly if possible), take a picture, and attach to said text message to be sent to preconfigured email address.
The main focus of this app is to accurately capture the location of the device while being light on battery, so that optimal capture can take place in the event the device is stolen.
If something like this already exists, please let me know so that I can donate to that developer.
Specifics: I have an Evo with CM7, if it matters in coding the app at all.
Lookout has lost phone features similar to what you are asking for. I have Lookout on my phone, uses almost no battery.
They also have an app called Plan B that you can install after the phone is lost to get a GPS location on it.
Both are free.
I don't expect the bounty, but feel free to buy me a sandwich for helping.
Lookout causes too many problems from what I've seen. I'll check out the Plan B app.
Bounty is still up.
I'm not the "fastest" coder in the world, but I would hazard a guess of minimum 20 hours for development, testing, etc.
Great app idea but I'm not writing code for $2.50 an hour ...just sayn'
And Android OS prevents someone from NOT being able to stop a Service.
Try apps "Where's My Droid" or GPS Tracker. Both have remote activation capabilities.

Yes I read the entire op and wasn't very impressed. Texting coordinates wouldn't be very reliable way to catch someone. There's a very good chance the person could be driving at the moment you send your activation text.
Same for turning on the camera. Highly unlikely they'd have the camera pointed at their face or anything recognizable. Or even if they did, probably couldn't make out much without the flash.
Just my opinion. But I'd much rather have an app that gave me continuous GPS coordinates as does the apps I suggested.

Look up Prey. it runs as a background service and has a lot of cool stuff. Google it, they have a whole web interface and everything, you can use the same service on your laptop under the same account. I think it would suit your needs.

The best lost/stolen app imo is Theft Aware. From the app's website:
Theft Aware runs (and this is worldwide UNIQUE) completely invisible in the background. That's right! Theft Aware is COMPLETELY INVISIBLE. You'll be able to remotely control your phone by SMS at any time. Theft Aware will reply to your commands by SMS as well. The sent or received SMS leave no trace on the mobile phone, no signal will alert the thief - who will feel safe!
Sure, as soon as the thief changes the SIM card of the phone, the phone number of it will change. NO PROBLEM. Theft Aware will detect the change and will inform your buddy automatically about the new phone number by SMS.

Best thing to do with lost or stolen phone?
-Call provider and they'll kill the phone.
-Buy new phone
Edit: Mainly a reply to an edited out part of a post but still applicable so I'll leave what I wrote
At 9.99 EUR, Theft Aware is far from free but I understand your point. It's good to watch for security and privacy issues. I would only caution that one could easily miss out on good/helpful apps if generalizations are made based on one bad app(le) or the possibility of one. But really this is what Android is all about...individual choice. To each their own.
I've been using Prey for a while now and I'm very happy with it.
All the current apps are dependent on your sim card remaining in the phone so you can text it. So in the reality of your phone being stole they will be useless.

If a thief changes the SIM card, Theft Aware will proactively send you the location and the new phone number of the thief to predefined friends of yours. Once you got the new number, you will again be able to locate your phone at any time.

So even if the SIM card is changed, the app will inform you the phone number associated with that new card by messaging both of the numbers you assigned when you set it up. Once you have that, you can message commands invisibly to that new number to control Theft Aware as well as now knowing the thief's phone number to hand over to police, your carrier, or to figure out the owner of that number on your own.

However, if i ever stole someones phone, the first thing I would do is take out the battery and let it sit on the shelf for a month or two until the previous owner has given up. And trust me, you will if it happens to you. It happened to me.

Theft Aware
Theft Aware isn't sim card depending. If the sim gets changed a sms is sent to up to two notification numbers you define on installing theft aware.
it meets all requirements you specify (except that the location is sent via sms not email).
but that will soon be available via a webinterface where you can control your device.
I don't need the bounty either - try theft aware and buy a license. thats enough compensation as my company sells theft aware
Check out "watch droid"......
Every beginning thief knows that if you steal a smartphone you get out the body the battery and SIM card as first thing. Second thing is looking for hard reset instructions.
It should be something deeper than OS level.

It's been said a couple times that Theft Aware can detect a SIM card change and inform you of the new number so you can continue to control it through text messages. It will also survive a factory reset if you have rooted your phone and installed it appropriately. It won't survive a full data wipe like you would do when flashing a new ROM through recovery, but nothing can...that's the point of a full wipe. If you are waiting for or expecting something to come out that will persist through a full wipe, then you will never be satisfied.
