Exchange Server Solutions for my wife and I - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

I need advice.
Currently, my wife and I each have Wizards. We each sync our phone to our personal laptop and then to the shared kitchen computer. This way, our contacts and calendars are available on all of the computers. All the computers use Outlook 2XXX.
So I'd like to do this automatically WITHOUT ActiveSync'ing them to all the computers.
I've been looking into the various hosting solutions and it looks like I'll be paying about $10-15/person/month.
I'm just not convinced that my goal of having shared contacts and calendars will be achieved.
Can anyone offer any advice? Any recommendations of hosting companies?
As more and more couples get PDAs and the such, you'd think that someone would want to tap this market (the uber-geek married techno dorks with kids market)
We're not a big company or anything. I just need to the phone number of the babysitter once my wife puts it in her MDA! IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK!?!?
HHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEELLLLLLPPPPPPPP

you check out www.mail2web.com? sounds like thatd would work out just set them up to use the same account. or am I missing your question?
ohh btw mail2web is free...

I use mail2web (live version is free), I can sync the wizard at anytime via GPRS and via USB with the desktop, all three stay synced together.

Exchange Sync plus sync with work

Hi guys,
got a little question.
I have got a exchange 2003 running which i sync to at home, which is all well and good, but i REALLY need my works outlook/exchange Calender syncing to my device too.
Now as far as i can make out this isnt possible. is there some sort of hack/workaround/3rd party hack for me to be able to do this? I cannot use Exchange sync with work because they are only using 5.5 and wont allow me access even if it did work.
any advice much appriciated.
How about just setting activesync up using the option "sync with 2 computers" Would this do it for you or must you do it remotely?
well yes this is the only other option i could think of, but that means i have to use rubbish pop3 to collect my home emails.
any other ideas?
OK, but I guess that I am not sure why you would have to use POP at home... Why not have the work machine and the home machine both use their separate exchange profiles, and activive sync the device to each one? Unless your home and work PC is a single unit that you share. I am probably missing something in what you are trying to achieve....
Your other option may be to look at using i Anywhere's "Pylon Anywhere" product, that provides some enhanced syncing capabilities and 'push' e-mail to the PPC device.
i would activesync to each one... if... the XDA's OS supported syncing to 2 exchange activesync's.. and if exchange 5.5 had any sort of mobile integration.
Mmmm...well I guess the way I work around it is that I have my mail eyc downloaded form exchange to the PC's and stored there. That way its only a local synce with each on the PC's. Does that make sense or am I still missing something...?

Is syncing with ANYTHING but Outlook possible?

I have had it with Outlook. I loved my Palm Desktop - one job and it did it extremely well. Now with Outlook syncing on 2 machines it's managed to duplicate every note, manages to change my contacts all the time. My wife is no longer listed by her name but by her email address. I have about 2 dozen contacts that are listed 4+ times, Outlook always bombs trying to get 1 email message thats 1k big... I can keep going.
I hate OUTLOOK!!!
So please, can I sync to anything Anything ANYTHING but outlook!!!
Thanks in advance
Well, yes, if you have a Mac around
I also just switched over from Palm and I too hated Outlook when I first had to deal with it.
So I got this: http://www.markspace.com/missingsync_windowsmobile.php and am happily syncing with my Intel iMac through both Entourage and Apple Mail. Much happier now
You can use FinchSync to sync with Mozilla Lightning and Sunbird. Yes it does work with WM2k5.
I'll try the Fynchsync but there's gotta be something else out there that this crappy phone can connect with.
Any ideas?
I could never get Outlook to work...
I've been using Yahoo Go....

I tried FynchSync.. it seems alright when I install it.. etc. However, at the last step of getting a link to sync, I notice that it still needs active sync (e.g. if you do it via USB cable). Sigh. But I think you ought to able to do it via wireless.
Sync with Lotus Notes using mNotes
You can sync with Lotus Notes (if you really want to use this as your client) as well. I'm lucky :?: enough to have this at work and have bought a personal license of CommonTime mNotes. It's £40, which is a little excessive, but it does a good job and I've not encountered any problems yet.

Exchange Server

I have recently signed up with Mail2web and love how it works, but there are limitations. as far as I can see you can only have 1 email address per account and the synced info is limited to mail, contacts, tasks and calender.
I am wondering if anyone would know of any software that is GPL/free that I can use to set an exchange type server on a laptop that can do the same functions plus some. Sort of a small office setup where I can have 2 or 3 emails and have the users share a calender, contacts, data files for applications like shopping lists.
Thanks
What else would you like to remotely sync? Also you do realize that hosting your own exchange server you will need to leave the machine running 99% of the time, not exactly well suited for a laptop. As far as an open source gpl implementation of exchange check out this site, http://www.open-xchange.com/
I forgot to mention what I wanted to sync, a few pda/cellphones and a few desktops. I like the small size and lower power consumption of a laptop, maybe a mini pc would be better at the task, I am not sure.
thanks for the reply I will check out the link next.
I guess it really depends on what you wanna do. If you want to deal with setting up a mail server try the open exchange if you have the money get the MS version. This would be a great way to go for medium sized business but if there are only a few accounts to manage a hosted service such as mail2eb is much more viable and there down time is next to never. With there business plans you can manage multiple email accounts and share there calendars with a variety of devices and email clients.
I looked at open-xchange and it looks pretty good, I have never tried to set up an email server but I am will to pick up a $100 laptop and try setting it up. It looks like the cost of Mail2web business account is $15 per user/per month, sounds like it would be worthwhile setting up my own server, and learning something rather then tying myself to $30 a month for me and my wife. I can definitely see an advantage for a business to sync up there data and sharing files with mobile devices. I am willing to learn
Thanks for the info
I still think that a laptop would not be good as an email server. Your 100bucks would be better spent buying desktop off of craigslist. but thats my 2cents.
Lets us know your success!!
I just looked at open xchange, geez how much!? Buy MS Small Business Server 2003, its bloody cheaper!

[REQ] Sychronisation Options

I know there are a load of threads out there regarding syncing OTA but I thought I'd canvass some opinions from people to see if my current method can be imporved upon.
A little background:
I use a desktop PC running Windows 7 (build 7100) primarily but also have laptop for taking to Law School with me (also running Windows 7 build 7100).
I (obviously) also use an unbranded Touch HD.
I'm a devoted user of Outlook and it manages all my contacts, calendar appointments and tasks and neatly ties into my Onenote workbooks which I use for Law School.
The Problem
It's surprisingly difficult to keep all of the above in sync! Originally both machines were running Vista and I used my (very old) Hermes to keep the two sets of PIM in sync. This however produced quite a few confilcts over time and things like birthdays would appear repeated over and over again in my calendar.
I'm now using Google Sync to keep my calendar in sync which works well but doesn't sync the categories that entries are set with nor does it allow for attachments to sync with appointments.
For tasks and contacts synchronising I'm still plugging my phone in between the two computers but wondered if there was a more elegant solution.
I'd love to set up an exchange account but most of them are geared for corporate use only and (for example) the Microsoft Hosted Exchange requires a minimum of 5 users before you can sign up.
I'm managing with push email provided by Seven on my phone but would love to be able to have tasks and contacts pushed as well.
So, wise crowd of XDA Devs, would do people suggest? Any other options open to me? I've looked into Mail2Web but can't seem to get it to work properly, likewise Zimbra desktop but I really want to keep using Outlook (there's 5 years worth of information stashed away in my .pst file!).
Suggestions? Please?
As an attorney I know the importance of what your needing to do. Are you using gysyncit? http://www.daveswebsite.com/software/gsync/. I believe it gives you ota wireless sync for your calendar...not sure about tasks though.
Thanks for the links but it seems as though gSyncit does exactly what the offical Google version does but charges you $9.99 for the privilege?
Google licensed Activsync from Microsoft towards the start of the year rendering (IMO) all the 3rd party options a little redundant for syncing Google Calendar and Outlook.
For anyone reading this, you can find out more details over at the offical Google page.
Have you considered mail2web?
The provide an exchange server for a small monthly fee and offer outlook web access.

You can try Missing Sync but cost a lot of money...

Why not sync with Google contacts and such though? What is bad with it?

some people are PARANOID about their privacy
same PARANOID people that will not allow BlackBerry to run in USA & Soudi Arabia, because their Security Service CAN NOT HACK the encryption used by Black Berry (although USA kinda of drop this issue, as they setup their own BBserver for the security services to tap into it)
Yay! for Black Berry
it's just a shame their phones are not up to my standards, i like the BB email service though.
Ditto on the BlackBerry thing. Cloud is the way forward. Fighting change is a losing battle. Privacy is important but so is keeping up with the times. I hope your issue gets resolved.

Co i want to do i localy, not OTA, i relly dont like google services... and i dont want to share my contacts and personal info with it
BINGO!
I Knew it!
LOL
personally i've been swaying away anyone using Outlook to use something else
Outlook is the worse program ever by Microsoft
Go use Lotus Notes instead if you want a real software that works and that is productive
For personal use i prefer Thunderbird, it's simply perfect
It's not all about security.
There are some simplicity issues here as well.
Syncing to Google servers, then syncing back to Outlook is way more complicated then just syncing to Outlook in the first place. What if he got no WIFI around, what if he got no APN or data plan is pricy as hell?
Simple syncing to Outlook is too much to ask for?

Agreed. But add your account in the Android Email app, avoid the Samsung "social hub", it is crap. I don't know why these manufacturers try to re-invent stuff already built into Android.
i dont have any exchange server at least for my own private/business usage, u just use outlook cos i em used to it, i need quick and responsible "office" boundle
and that what outlook is, you can spit at it but its true,...
i tried missing sync and it wont do the job for me

Exactly what I was going to suggest..
Although, one question you must also ask yourself, is how much do you trust your email provider. Remember, Google basically told China to go f* themselves. Many email server owners wont be willing to do the same.
You should also ensure you are using SSL connections to your email servers (most people don't). Because if you don't use SSL on your computer to communicate with your email server, the entire process is pointless, because they are more likely to read the traffic at your ISP.
You must also ensure that you are enforcing SSL in your browser properly (disallow HTTP connections from HTTPS), use plugins to always try to connect to SSL sites first, and checking that passwords entered are entered in HTTPS. Otherwise, you are wasting your time completely..
