Hello all,
I want to modify system files from extracted ROM (translation purpose - I don't want to make it with mui files because of speed reduction) but from what I know I need to sign modified files with some Root Certificates... Can somebody help me with this? Somebody like BEPE...?
BTW I'm modifying system files of Mio A701 (ROM OKI-024).

Hello All,
Firstly, I would like to say how great this website is and tip my hat off to all the people involved in maintaining this site.
I am very new to the whole XDA modification scene and have a ton of newbie questions. I know some of these questions have been asked before; however I still have not grasped the concepts fully. I have tried to restate the questions asked before so that I (and hopefully other newbie’s ) can fully understand how to modify XDA’s.
Any help anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated.
So here goes the questions:
When creating a customized ROM (using mkrom) my understanding is that one has re-create the initobj.txt and the Default.reg. Is it possible just to install all the applications you want, and then download the initobj.txt and the Default.reg and place them in the cfg directory for the custom ROM?
If this does not work, how does one know what to edit in these files?
When mkrom request a Rom image, is it requesting the backup ROM IMAGE? Will any image do?
When backing up a ROM, what option does one have to select to backup the operating system, settings and programs inside the ROM? Does CE do all of this?
What is CE, Boot, GSM stand for in the boot menu?
If one wants to just create a new boot image, what is the simplest way? Does one have to create a whole new ROM?
If one wants to just have the unlocking software, what is the simplest way? Does one have to create a whole new ROM?
When creating a Rom using RomKitchen, it asks you add Add your own ROM files? Is this your backup rom?
In RomKitchen one of the readme files asks for:
bootimage.bmp,_initobj.txt,_initdb.ini,_default.reg,xipchain
Is the default.reg and the initobj.txt in this directory have to be pre altered for the new programs one wants in the Rom like the way the mkrom wants them? Does the setup program create them for you?
Is the bootloader.nb0 file specific to the boot loader you have?
Very confused what is exactly needed in the /CFG directory.
In the CFG directory do you place your backup Rom dump?
Some ideas.
The most important issue is to know that you have to put the files you want to add int the folder files2 (up to 5 MB minus the amount in the folder directory) or in files1 (up to 900 KB).
The key is to manage default.reg (the registry of windows CE), you have to register the .exe's and dll's you want to use. It can be very useful for you the ssnap.exe (to show registry modifications by autoinstallabe programs) and a registry editor.
In initobj.txt, there are only links, but you should put links if you want to access to your programs in Start Menu-> Programs or in the Start Menu.
I suggest you to make different posts for each question, it would make easier to answer.
Regards.
I used the testwm5.exe to extract the mui files, so to be able to change the mui language to greek. I have an hp ipaq hx2490b and I cannot etract the imgfs files(the program says dont found) from the nba file. So thing that its maybe we can put the mui files( and other files) in rom without to flash via the full backup file from spb backup or pther backup program. I havent eperiance or so much knowledge about these things, so I ask if it is possible to happens somthing like this. To extract some how the files of the backup file and replace the files that we want, and after compress it again.
Just thnk about it.
Thanks!
testwm5.exe doesn't create pure copies of the original files. Compare them in a hex editor and PE analyser. However, they generally work.
spb and similar apps don't create backups of the rom files - they don't need to because they are in rom. However, this means that these backups cannot restore a rom, just user generated files.

You can't put the file into the ROM without flashing. Backup software do not touch the ROM, it just replaces the files. If you already have the mui files in your phone, you can do a backup. and the next time you perform a hardreset, you will just need to restore from this backup file.
Ok. Thanks for the quick replay!
So any way to change the mui on this device. So far I didnt find something usefull, but maybe I miss something. Anyone that did it with hx2490b?
Just copy the MUI to windows, set the MUI key in registry to the correct LCID and reset.
Note that system MUIs like shellres.dll.0xxx.mui must be signed to load.
Please help me someone how to make CABs which can replace system files in ROM (e.g. gwes.exe etc.). I know that there are many users who know how to do these CAB files...
BTW I have searched all available WM5 forums and found nothing
You can't actually replace ROM files using a cab. What you can do is overwrite any ROM file once, with a file that has the same name. The actual file will be stored in the normal storage memory and referenced instead of the original ROM file by anyone trying to access it.
If you hard reset (format) the device the original file will be back.
There are no special actions required to do this. Create a cab as usual with the files you want.
Note two things: 1)You really don't want to mess with gwes.exe because you are likely to crash your device. 2) On some devices, replacing system files may require changing security settings first. If your cab fails because of permission issues, search for 'Application unlock' for your device.
Thanx very much for your reply I want to mess with system files because I'm going to make translation of my device I tryed to make CAB file but it seems my device (Mio A701) is locked so you say I must search for "application unlock" specially created for my device? Isn't there any universal unlock for WM5 devices?
Dear all,
my smartphone runs a TEGIC ET9, but unfortunately german language has not been installed. Could please someone check on his phone, whether he has the files:
eT9.German.Ldb.dll
eT9.Dis.Qwerty.German.kbd.dll
(usually located) in directory //Windows/Programs/Tegic/eT9 and upload or sent them ?
I thiink, I was able to apply the usual changes to the registry, but still do not know, where to get the matching dll files.
Thanks a lot, Sirup
