I used the testwm5.exe to extract the mui files, so to be able to change the mui language to greek. I have an hp ipaq hx2490b and I cannot etract the imgfs files(the program says dont found) from the nba file. So thing that its maybe we can put the mui files( and other files) in rom without to flash via the full backup file from spb backup or pther backup program. I havent eperiance or so much knowledge about these things, so I ask if it is possible to happens somthing like this. To extract some how the files of the backup file and replace the files that we want, and after compress it again.
Just thnk about it.
Thanks!
testwm5.exe doesn't create pure copies of the original files. Compare them in a hex editor and PE analyser. However, they generally work.
spb and similar apps don't create backups of the rom files - they don't need to because they are in rom. However, this means that these backups cannot restore a rom, just user generated files.
V
You can't put the file into the ROM without flashing. Backup software do not touch the ROM, it just replaces the files. If you already have the mui files in your phone, you can do a backup. and the next time you perform a hardreset, you will just need to restore from this backup file.
Ok. Thanks for the quick replay!
So any way to change the mui on this device. So far I didnt find something usefull, but maybe I miss something. Anyone that did it with hx2490b?
Just copy the MUI to windows, set the MUI key in registry to the correct LCID and reset.
Note that system MUIs like shellres.dll.0xxx.mui must be signed to load.

Is there a way to override a rom file?
I found welcomehead.192.png the windows boot screen, not the initial imate one, the blue windows one, ive edited the png, but cant replace the file as it is in rom, any suggestions as how to do this? or is it wait until someone works out how to open the nbf file and then change that way?
Theres nothing in the registry that i can find that points to this file
anyone?
just overwrite the file with the same name. ignore errors
1. As sama says, just use a proper file explorer (Resco/Total) to overwrite the ROM file. If you delete the new file the old one will still be there in ROM.
2. The ROMs can be decoded, you can change the ROM then flash it. This is not a safe thing to do, and is complicated. However, this is a total waste of time (hours) for a 100KB image file unless you really can't afford 100KB in your Programs Memory.
3. If you want, you can also change the "initial imate one" too. Buzz has the tools and instructions on his site (http://buzzdev.net). This will be a flash job, but takes up no space and a hard reset won't wipe it.
Hope this helps.
I'm writing a little tool to restore my settings after a hard reset.
One of the problems I've run into is that I can't "overwrite" the splash screen image in the windows folder.
I'm using visual basic and the "file.copy" command.
Does anyone know how to overwrite this file (and probably also other files in "rom")? Would an api function to copy the file work better?
Total Commander, and MortScript, succeeds in copying another file to \windows\welcomehead.96.png, so there must be a way

Let me give you some hints:
1. You must edit ROM to change files.
2. Please go to URL

OK. I'll Rephrase my question:
I want to write a program to copy the file:
\storage card\welcomehead.96.png
to:
\windows\welcomehead.96.png
on a WM5 device. I'm not interested in editing the rom.
I know it's possible to write a program that can copy the file, since both total commander for PPC can do it and MortScript can do it.
It does not work when using "file.copy" in visual basic. So i'm asking if anyone knows if there's an API function I can use to do it, or if there is some other way to do it.
"Cooking a new rom" is not an option for me. Because:
I want to be able to use whatever rom i want, and I am making a tool which i can run to do the following after a hard reset (or rom upgrade):
- copy files (typically shortcuts to progs intalled on the storage card, files in my documents etc.) from the storage card to the device
- set registry entries the way I want them
- install the cab files I want "automatically"
I've got it all sorted, except that it bombs when i try to copy the file "welcomehead.96.png" to the windows folder.

You just have to overwrite the existing file...
1. Open the file

I have been able to extract the EXT ROM and OS ROMs using the NB2NBF and IMGFS tools. I know that by using a custom ROM I can save on storage space by loading in my programs. I'd like to load Pocket Informat, Alarm Today, Phone Alarm , isilo and TCPMP into the OS ROM. How do I do this? I have all their cabs. I will keep reading the forums too.
I know that some like summiter have done this. Anyone able to help me get started or point me in the right direction?
J-Man5
the only device i ever heard supporting that is walaby
dont know if it's possible with other devices
i mean the os part of the rom is well you know full already
yes it is possibel.you need a tool called [typhoonnbfdecode_v5] look for this tool and how to use somehere in the ftp, and here in the wizard forums
you need to make a dump of the os from a nk.nbf image with the above tool
then you need to extract the files from de cabs you want plus the reg settings,
simply copy the extracted files from cab to your rom dump folder
make a cab file with the reg files from the cab files an also the shortcuts to the programs.
repack the rom with the typhoonnbfdecode_v5, convert the nba image with NB2NBF back to nbf and flash, after that install the cab with reg settings plus shortcuts,
you have a long jorney ahead.
i took me several weeks to make my own rom with netcf.2,adobe acrobat e several other programs integrated to the rom.

OK I have gotten the nk.nbf extracted and the EXT ROM opened using winimage and the OS ROM dumped via imgfs.
Where I am running into problems understanding is how to unpack the .cab install files for the programs I am planning on using and how to "move" them to the \Program Files\ directories that they need to be in. For example PocketInformant is loaded into the \Program Files\WebIS directory. Do I put all the files from the .cab file in the dump OS directory? Is there some sort of program that will extract the .cab file and let me look at what registry settings are being set by its installation?
What program is used to create registry settings into a .cab file?
Thanks

Hey!
I want to add some apps to the Rom of my Wizard, too.
I have used imgfs tools to great a dump from my OS.
Now i want to Install Total Commander to a Folder "\Programme\Total Commander\".
How can i do this? Or is it only possible to copy the files without any folder?
Sry for my bad english
hey there,
i created an oem package which contains an dll file, one that exists also in the sys-folder as folder (contains imageinfo.bin and s000), when cooking with my kitchen buildos gives an error, something about that the expected file already exists as folder...
what can i do?
It's not a good idea to over-write a module; in fact, it's a bad idea, because it crashes most kitchens (buildos will crash every time).
1. Why are you trying to over-write a module with a file?
2. If you really want to do it, you need to remove the module from the sys directory. I'm not sure it's a good idea myself; you should at least convert the file to a module. If you don't know the difference between a file and a module, then you should search and find the answer. It's easy enough to do.
It would help a great deal when you start a topic if you give more information. What build are you using? What device? Most importantly, what module are you trying to replace?
Thanks Ted,
sorry for the small amount if informations. I'm using EXEcutor von pako777, it's kitchen tool for the omnia 2... almost, it dissambles the dump-file, then i can delete/add files and then it assembles it again... some kitchens i saw over here a really great, but the executor get the work done...
i found the informations, thanks for the hint i will now try reversmode.exe
right now i want to convert a taskbar.cab to an oem package and so i need to replace shellres.192.dll and some other files
I think that kheb 1.1 (search, it's easy to find) is the best way to make a package for your cab. Just run a snapshot, install the cab, then run another snapshot (+difference). Select the 'make an oem' function. It doesn't make a working oem, but it will dump the reg keys that you need, and collect all the files (I assume they'll all go to windows). It sounds like you're building the rom straight from a dump, and not with full packages? Then you'll need to just swap the new files in for any old ones (as well as add new ones), and figure out how to add the registry keys, if there are any. I guess you can use ceregeditor or something similar to import the keys into the default.hv. Convert files to modules, if that's how the dll's appear in the dump.
You have to be a little careful with an app like kheb (or sk tracker): it may dump out some extraneous files or reg keys, as changes occur all the time to a device's registry and file system. Make sure you separate the wheat from the chaff. It's best not to soft reset after the cab install, if you're prompted to do so. That creates a butt-load of random new reg values that are irrelevant. If any certificates are installed by the cab, you can probably ignore them.
Thanks again, but i used the package creator from ervius to convert the cab, converted the rgu to an provxml and the dll-files with reversmode and everything worked fine
but i will take a look onto kheb, sound promising when converting a cab with setup.dll

10.Support extra language pack(Now only WWE and CHS available.Hope your help for translation)
Installations
1.Unzip the file to \Storage Card\My Document\Visual UC .VUC.mscr and ES.mscr must be placed in the root of Visual UC.
2.Use DotTaskMgr in Copy 2 Windows to import VUC.reg.
3.Copy all the files in Copy 2 Windows to \Windows.
How To Use
1.Folder Explanations
●Cabs for cab files. If you want to install them to storage, put them into "Storage".But I advised you don't do this, because sometimes it need you manually complete the task.
●Files for the files you want to copy. The subfolder name is the destined folder you want to copy to.
●PIM for PIM.VOL
●Regs for registry files. The regs in subfolder will be imported after a hard reset when the rom you use contain Visual UC as a package.
●Xmls for xml or provxml files.
2.Auto BackUp or Restore
●Auto Restore will conduct all the operations that is enabled in settings of Auto Restore
●Auto BackUp is disabled by default, you can use Add To Auto to include the operation in Auto BackUp.
3.Define Operations
●In BackUp Files or Define in Copy Files.Select Add to start an item.A name will be asked to input for the item firstly.Secondly, you can choose Select File to select the source file or Select Folder to select the source folder(Caution: All the files including subfolders will be copyed).Thirdly, select the target folder which the files are copyed to,you will be asked whether to create a subfolder to contain the source files(Do it and name the folder after source folder if the source folder is a program that you want to copy it to \Program Files).
●In BackUp Regs,a name is also required at first.Secondly, you can choose Select to select the path of a registry key(Cautionue to MortScript's max number of an array. In HKCR,some of the keys can not be displayed and DONE button is missed) or Input to input the key path(main key must be selected first and no "[]" in the path).Thirdly, choose the target folder for the registry files(Regs folder is recomended for later restore)
●You can rename, modify, delete the item.If you add the item to auto,it will be conducted in auto restore or backup.
4.Option
●In Change Path you can change the path of CAB REG FILE or XML folder, but I recommend the default Path.
●You can backup, restore or reset VUC settings in the Option. The backup file is named visual uc.reg and located in the root of Visual UC,the file will be imported first when it Autorun after a hard reset.
Extra Script Introduction
1.Auto BackUp.mscr can automatically backup files registries and PIM.VOL .However, you should define them first.
2.Load VUC.mscr is used to load VUC.mscr and run it to silently restore after you flashed a ROM that contain Load VUC.mscr.You must put Visual UC folder in either of the three path:\Storage Card\,\Storage Card\My Documents\,\Storage Card\Program Files\.
3.Cook.mscr.You can modify it or rename your own script to the name. The script will be run in auto restore.
4.ES.mscr is a component of Visual UC.It show the process of Auto BackUp or Auto Restore.

My thanks go to Mirko who develop MortScript which makes my script possible,Noonski whose XDA_UC inspires me and help me to solve lots of problems and Dotfred whose TaskMgr is a very powerful tool(the script use it to import or export registry files and Config provxml files).
If you want to donate, you can donate them.
Statements
You can freely use and modify the script. But I take no responsibility to the data lose the script may bring to you.MortScript and DotTaskMgr are also free software, before you use it you should read their legal statements first.
This is a beta version. So there may be some bugs. You can post the bugs on XDA or just send me an E-mail to let me know.I will be appreciate if you tell me your advice.
