PPC2003 ROM Device Authentication cracked...

I just cracked the Device Authentication.
I was using our 'dumprom' script and noticed one of the files contained in the new ROM is called 'DevAuth.exe'. Given the window title 'Device Authentication' on the annoying box that told me I could not play with my new toy, I figured the two were related.
So.... If you replace the only occurence of 'DevAuth.exe" in the image with something else (I used "DevAuww.exe"), the ROM will start just fine.
Expect some screenshots soon (Carlos, can you help out?), but first impressions:
- Most importantly: they bought my favourite game 'Bubblets'. It's now called 'JawBreaker' and resides in games. No wonder the guy never got back to me when I asked if I could include the shareware version in the Special Edition ROM...
- Bluetooth in the control panel (ofcourse our device still doesn't have the hardware).
- Windows Media Player 9
- Lots of things have a slightly newer look
- No major functional improvements to phone and other apps that were immediately obvious to me.

So, Let's hope something running linux crack the rom for us.
By the way, is the rom "4.00.05" which provided by Source O2?
If yes, why it display 3.04 on the booting screen?

I guess these version numbers are just put in whoever builds that particular ROM image. They don't mean that much...

Here's the real question: Who will be kind enough to
convert this ROM to a usable one, preferably an .exe package, for the rest of the group. I don't have a Linux box handy today to do this, so anyone who does, please get on it! We are all waiting.....

Is it possible for me to convert the .nb1 file to .nbf without using the sd card as I don't have one? If so how is it done.

sorr forgot to mention I have access to a linux box just need the instructions on how to do it.

excellent. I tried running dumprom.exe on the nb1 image and it crapped out. do i have to convert it to nbf? after u extract the rom how do i rebuild a new one? is it possible for you to post it somewhere to download it?

PPC 2003 / Ozone comments
All you need to do is load the PPC2003PE.nb1 file in a hex editor and replace the only occurence of 'DevAuth.exe' with something else (e.g. 'DevAuww.exe'), and put the file on an SD with XDArit, use the bootloader to burn it and presto.
About Ozone/PPC2003: I'm seriously underwhelmed. Ofcourse the next version of the Special Edition ROM will use it as a base, but the functional differences between this version and what we have with e.g. O2's 4.17.03 ROM are really minimal. I smell a tick layer of hyped-up marketing covering a relatively minor upgrade here...
I suggest the playful among you give it a try, but if you can live without it for a little longer, stick to the Special Edition, and unless something is seriously more difficult than we think, we'll publish a patch to this to make it "Special Edition ROM v1.2", Real Soon Now.

I patched the rom and writing it on the SD card now.
I think microsoft will charge for anyone provide the 2003 upgrade, I don't believe O2 will provide the new rom free. If the upgrade is free , it will be the greatest news for all XDA user.

As I said before: do not get your hopes up: this is a minor upgrade with a lot of marketing money thrown at it to make it look like a big thing.

It works!!!
After patching the ROM, I now have Pocket PC 2003 on my Qtek!!!

Hmm, so while I like playing with the latest stuff, it sounds like I should just wait for a 2003 SE ROM. I'm sure we'll have one to try really soon...

Back to the old ROM...
Everything seems to work fine with the new ROM, except that you can't change GPRS authentication method... My ISP uses PAP authentication and there is no way to change to that...

A little funny thing found on the new rom :
There is some unlisted program on the \windows folder
I tried pacman, it's GREAT ;-).
Also it provided DUAL VOLUME , you can set system / ring volume seprately.
However the rom is far from perfect.
I found 2 major problem.
1. The SIM Contacts is worse that the old SIM utility. It can do nothing every copy all contacts from the SIM to the device.
2. Wireless Modem is missing.
It seems it's still a develop version of rom.

I did, and it's really great. No issues with camera, WiFi, or lines on the screen, all is well. I "upgraded" from the latest O2 Atom wwe rom.

Well after having the modified exec rom on my atom for a few days i have decided to resort back to the original atom firmware "4261".
To be honest i could not find anything valuable enough to keep it. The original rom gives you the choice to install O2 plus and phone plus and the headset patch through O2 connect.
The wireless manager looks pretty and the world times is boring, so back to the original firmware for me. There are still a few bugs with the exec rom so i wouldn't bother.. CAM works fine and wifi work fine no matter which rom i use. I did notice i couldn't use small icons on my today screen with the exec rom.. other than that, nice try....
Does anyone know where you can get some cool themes for the atom like woftam has used in this thread?

P.S if you need to resort back to the original firmware, remove your sd card, connect device via activesync, hold the cam button and the soft reset button to force the device into BOOTLOADER mode. Next run the rom exe from your PC and you are away.....

Unfortunatly there is no official release for a English orbit rom and as of now no one knows how to back up a rom,so guess we shall have to wait.I also have a O2 Orbit with the UK rom.

as far as i know there is none, but maybe a extrom is all U need (settings ....)

I am in same position, as you will have seen from other thread. Have you managed to get a copy of the T-Mobile ROM? It looks like you couldn't get it to load, from your voting post. Where did you get it from as I can't find it. Happy to give it a "go" as I have nothing to lose at the moment!

Spoke to O2 the chap at tech sup was very unhelpful
I told him about my problem... minus the part the pdamobiz and he said SORRY CANT DO ANYTHING NO ROM!!! SO BUGGER OFF
then I rang again and a nice lady called Audry said that I could return it and they would replace it so long as it was not User error that cause the problem.
my problem is should I send it back and risk a bollocking or keep it and wait for the illusive O2 UK ROM?
also I hear that you can CID Unlock the phone from IMEI-UNLOCK even if it is bricked

Not exactly the solution,but yes ive read on the forums that they do revive some phones(not sure about the artemis though) As far as O2 goes knowing their reputation they may just as well say that it was your fault.But then you have nothing to loose,if they say that it was your error take the phone back and send it to imeiunlocker or the other case senerio is that you can end up with a new PDA from them.
PS; Try flasing the TMUK rom .

bdangol just go through this entire thread carefullyy and see if it helps you,seemed to have helped some guys with bricked devices.If u can revive your phone with this rom then by using duttys tool u can always flash the OS of any rom to ur device,hope this helps.

I spoke to them - its £40 plus £7 postage BUT they are on holiday and not back until end of month AND they cannot flash the O2 ROM as they have not got it either - they WILL unlock the CID and reflash with any ROM of your choice, if you supply the file and/or link.
Looks like a solution . . . albeit a bit expensive, but we all learn by our mistakes!

He says they already know about a couple of bugs:
1. After opening Settings > Phone, the window can't be closed.
2. "Missing card." [-]Whether he means the SIM or the SD card I'm not sure.[/-] It's the SD card that can't be detected, thanks aaronx.
3. "This isn't an official 6.5, because the .VM and .ROM in 6.5 aren't the same as in 6.1. Since the HP612 has never come out with 6.5, there's no place to find the precise .VM and .ROM needed to transplant [WM 6.5 onto the HP612], unless an expert can properly modify them based on 6.1. Here, I've used the resources from 6.1. However, not trying out [the ROMs for this reason] simply won't do - on the basis of the PocketPDA Xiu Mutou's 6.5 ROM for the Dopod U1000, which basically has no problems. From this we can see that using the .VM and .ROM from 6.1 can produce a ROM without bugs - as to the other properties, I just don't know."

there is a stable wm 6.5 , 21193 build
..but it is in simplified chinese, I flashed it and it seems so far so good
I think there is english in the rom since when I shutdown it actually give english message in the popup box, so it may be able to changed to english by registry
but I haven't had time to look at it yet

Hi,
Sounds nice, but for an WWE interface you need the complete langpack : 0409.mui and as there 's still no emulator for the WM6.5 , it's not available yet....

May be i wiill look at some some 6.5 rom in ppcgeeek to see if i can copy the english mui over? Do you think it is possible?

Not to mention you'll need to replace ALL references of the old mui to the new, include fonts etc ... and even then you can have some driverproblem.
Guess I'll wait some more time

i extracted the rom and notice it is probably protected...package tool cannot recreate sys and oem folder
so i think the whole thing need to be start from scratch, but at least we know it is possible

some update for my first rom cooking!
I successfully flashed mine to ENGLISH 6.5 using xip extract from the chinese rom and combine it with the sys floating around here/ppcgeek
wifi work...but the problem is PHONE does not work
so need to compare files with the chinese rom to see what i am missing
if anyone know why the phone doesn't show up in the communication manager let me know
EDITED: may be because i used a cdma sys? let me try to use different sys lol

i replaced ril.dll, phone.dll and rilgsm.dll and now the phone works
i will start a new thread when i package the whole thing up

I tried te rootfs and the herald cab works fine for me I my orbit.
The GSM works I receive a phone call and a SMS too and both works.
Need more work for let use the buttons: the right softkey and windows button type "6" and "N" and "M" respectively, and We need a back button urgently
If i use the wizard or prophet cab I use android in portrait because all is in landscape.

Can this be installed on a memory card or does it have to be installed into the device memory

This rom cannot be updated on shady 313 WM6.5 Rom. if you want to update android you should change your operation soft ware to any other one.

its not a rom
it's still experimental
it isnt finished yet
getting it run on half working hybrid 6.5 rom will be quite far down the priority list
just for the developers information, it runs fine on pdhee's last 6.5 rom...or rather it did until i tried it this morning and it crashed out with the kernel error that others are reporting (cant mount fs).
reading the dev lists it looks like some poeple think this is an sd driver issue or something that was introduced in the new version
waiting for a fix anyway

the reason for that you dont close applications its because until now we dont have mapped the hardware buttons.
xplayerku is working on that and maybe darkstar too (i hope so).

if you read the thread, they are discussing making a specific artemis board config.
i think this needs to be done before we get any more progress
once the board config is done for artemis it can be fixed to run properly, but we need to wait for them to do this.
at the moment there are board configs for wing, prophet, herald and wizard, but no artemis so our phones are being booted pretending to be one of these 4 devices (which is why it doesnt quite work properly yet)
