For some reason my xda 11 says i have 91.68 mb allocated for storage
yet the last time i looked at it there was only 28mb in use.
I have no pictures or sound files no extra programmes and have only 2.2 mb of data above 64K. I've closed down all my active programs and performed a soft reset yet nothing seems to help.
Any ideas??
I'm a bit confused about your terminology here - I read it as you have 98MB allocated, 28MB in use, and therefore 70MB free - does this correspond with what you're getting in the Settings-Memory applet?
I'm confused because I can't see a problem with the above - although it only leaves you with 29ishMB allocated for program execution it's a perfectly reasonable config. You can change allocation between storage and program by sliding the slider. You probably know all this, I've probably got the wrong end of the stick.
Looks like a bit has gone somewhere, I have 126.03 to begin with, you are out by a bit as yours only adds up to 119.68.
memory loss
ok sorry if i'm not explaining myself properly
i am currently looking my memory settings
which tells me i have 91.69 MB in use for storage leaving 10.19 free
and 18.06 MB in use for program and only 6.09 free
now what concerns me is that having been through file explorer i don't know what is taking up so much storage memory especially as i have no voice or picture files or have got any additional programs
firstly there is insufficent memory to run transcriber properly and secondly what happened to increase my storage use from 28mb to 91 when i hadn't even used it.
(i haven't even connected my xda to the net yet)
Any comments would be appreciated
cheers john
Hmm 90odd MB in use is indeed strange. Are you sure there are no large files anywhere? Have you installed anything recently? Have you made a recording and forgotten to stop it manually so that it filled the available memory (although you'd still find this as a large file). It's not normal for PPC apps to take up such amounts of storage, and without a directory listing or access to your device it's unfortunately going to be pretty much impossible to work out whats wrong.
Incidentally. storage vs program memory allocation can be automatically adjusted by the device itself if it needs to.
Check for camera files, or do a backup and do a hard reset back to factory settings, then look at it from there and check it as you install programs/files.
memory loss
Thanks for that guys I can't explain it either
i've got 02 data support looking in to it and they're stuck as well so they are escalating it ie sending it to someone else. I should hear back today or tomorrow.
i guess in the end i'll probably have to do a hard reset. I'm just worried that it might come back or i have a virus even though they don't exist on ppcs at the moment.
i want to get a 1gb storage card any tips ?
ps thanks again if you ever get arrested (not that you will) send me a private message and i'll look after you. (I'm in the old bailey tomorrow on a murder case)
Dear friends:
I have posted a similar question on the Hermes Mobile 6 section. Sorry for being a bit ridiculous. But I am quite desparate because this problem is driving me crazy...
I'm using a T-Mobiles MDA (838Pro) running WM6, CE OS 5.2.1437 (Build 17944.0.3.1), ROM Version: 3.54.707.3.
For the last month or so, I kept getting messages to say that my Storage Memory is critically low.
I have all my documents, ring tones, music, photos, video, etc. saved on my storage card. So there is practically nothing stored in the device ROM. I've checked all folders under "My Device", and there weren't really a lot of files in there.
I've used Oxios ClearApp and Hibernate to do clean up a few times a day. But that doesn't seems to help.
I've installed Clear Temp and use that to clean up the temp files. It works for a few days, but then the problem returned.
I've even deleted some programs, but it looks like whatever gets freed up will just be quickly be eaten up again.
Tonight, things have gone worse... My Storage Memory has dropped so low that I can't even send out any long SMS anymore.
It looks like I might have found where the problem is, but still don't know how it happened and how to solve it.
First, when I open Settings>Remove Programs, I see that practically all the appication programs are listed under "Programs in storage memory", including those that weren't even installed by me, like "Cyberon VoiceCommander". I'm not sure whether this is talking about the same "Storage Memory". But I thought that when I choose "Install in My Device" when installing a program, it is supposed to go into the "Program Memory", not "Storage Memory"?
Secondly, I took a closer look under "File Explorer", and I've finally found a few files that are very large size:
pim.vol (in root directory), 6.35MB
cemail.vol (in root directory), 412KB
compimeh.0904 (in Windows directory), 16.8MB
It also looks like these files will be amended every time when I do an ActiveSync. Not sure whether this is what caused my Storage Memory to go down everyday.
Has anyone experienced something similar? Would anyone have an idea of what these files are and whether it is safe to delete them?
Any help would be appreciated!
Thank you very much!
John
Internet Cache
Im sure you have already done this but make sure that your Internet Explorer Cache is stored on the Storage Card. This can eat memory very quickly.

I think I'm always keeping them there. And I have been using Clear Temp to clean them up to. But it doesn't help.
But just in case I haven't done it right, how can I check or change it? I checked the "Options" in IE, but couldn't find anything.
Thanks!
Thanks to those who were reading and trying to help. I have part of the mystery solved.
From this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=343878&highlight=compimeh.0904
I learnt that the file compimeh.0904.dat is in fact the dictionary that the Hermes used to autofill when we type our e-mails and messages. It will keep growing as we use those functions.
I have followed the instruction on the thread and deleted the file. Now I have 16.8MB back.
But I still don't understand how 30MB of my Storage Memory would be occupied. If some friends here can shed some light, it would be most appreciated.
When installing programs, if you select 'device' as the target, the program will be installed in storage memory.
It's a bit misleading, but program memory is ram, where running programs reside etc..
The number one thing I need to do here is thank the xda dev Herald forum, and a lot of the people who have contributed. I learned a lot of valuable information in the last 48 hours of immersing myself here trying to fix my Wing.
However, I'm at my ropes end, and can't figure out what to do.
I've had my Wing for a 5 weeks. Took some getting used to (had a couple of Dash's before that) but the phone had potential. I had installed a single game (Soduku) and was on my way.
Fast forward to 2 weeks ago. I start getting a message I'm sure you all are familiar with:
*Storage Memory - Your phone is running low on free storage space. Delete old or unused items to create more space.*
Now, after years of using the Dash, getting such a message after only 5 weeks seemed incredible. I went through the cleaned Temp Internet files, MMS messages, and whotnot, to no avail. After about three days it just went away on its own.
This brings us to three days ago. My phone just starts locking up on its own. I go from never having soft reset it before to having to do so almost a dozen times in 2 hours. This is when I start my search online for solutions. I find this place. I start learning about ROMs, RUUs, SPLs, registry tweaks, .cabs, some of this stuff I knew about from my Dash, some of it new.
Two days ago that Storage Memory message came back. Followed by a new one:
*Storage Memory - Storage memory is critically low. If the storage memory is not increased, other programs may not be able to start. Use File Explorer to delete files that are no longer needed or move some files to a storage card. *
I redouble my efforts. Throw Battery Status on there, and DL the files for the Page Pool change. This did not work, as I can't run .cabs or .dll files from my phone. I don't know if this is a PPC specific thing, but that's how I always installed stuff on my Dash; just run the .cab from File Explorer.
However, on this phone, when I try that, I get:
* itsutils.dll - There is no application associated with "itsutils". Run the application first, then open the file from within the application *
Same thing with .cab files.
This brings us to today. I can soft reset the phone and I get a Storage Memory message before the phone even finished loading the home screen. I can't go 90 seconds without getting a Storage Memory message. I deleted the one program I had installed (from the storage card), changed the registry to save Temp Internet Files to the Storage Card, nothing.
My Memory is:
Storage TOTAL 31.44 MB IN USE 31.44 MB FREE 0.0MB
Program TOTAL 47.89 MB IN USE 35.36 MB FREE 12.53 MB
I can no longer do anything useful on this phone. Text messages won't send. Half of my programs don't open. I can receiver calls but not make them. I went into the Remove Programs part of the Settings; that window is blank, and where is says Total storage memory available, its also blank. All T-Mo tech support can do is tell me to hard reset the phone.
I went through and deleted all of my text messages (about 2400 total), with absolutely NO CHANGE in memory. Every time I touch my phone, I get a Storage Memory message, unless one has already popped up on its own. Sometimes they stack on each other, too.
The only thing on this phone are my contacts, and Battery Status.
I'm about at the end of my patience here. My blood pressure has gone up 15 points in the last three days, and I forsee this phone getting very familiar with my 21" ASP followed by some Zippo fluid, in about a day.
Some basic stats:
WM6 Pro
CE OS 5.2.1622 (Build 18128.0.4.4)
ROM 4.26.531.1 WWE
OMAP850 201MHz (clocked to 247)
Model HERA110
IPL 4.26.0002
SPL 4.26.0000
That's all I can think of. I'm going to thank in advance anyone who even reads this, for taking some time out of your day. If you can help me, even better.
Cheers
By what i can read you are probably using a stock rom. considering you are running low on storage space 1st i would recommend use one of the BIGSTORAGE or Light Roms. Most of them have a big storage data and a lower Page Pool and less unnecessary programs. As a Wing user for over a year once i have flashed a custom ROM i have never had a low memory message. Been trying different once and using Open Touch 7.7 now. Not much of Storage Memory but i have a 4Gig memory card so i dont rly need it.
Also its a good practice to use the task manager to shut down programs if u run low on Program memory.
Thats about what i can think of for now.
Believe me, the Wing is a rly good phone.
Edit: Here are some Higher Storage Roms that i have used:
ttran001's Light Roms
ivanmmj's ROMs - 1
ivanmmj's ROMs - 2
Yeah, stock ROM.
I've been trying to DL another, and Hard SPL; every time I do it downloads about 900K and then the DL stops like its complete. But thats a story for another time.
I realized (and cant figure out why) that I can't actually delete any text messages. I delete them, and for whatever reason, I'll have to soft reset the phone, and then they're all back again.
I managed to get into the Remove Programs, and deleted EVERYTHING. Bought myself 2.2MB of Storage memory.
45 mins later, of the phone just sitting on my table, it was gone. Storage Memory is just back at 0.0MB.
I'm about to just hard reset and call it a day.
I'm using "JustMe" Ivan's ROM. A lot software installed. Some softwares in main memory. Because needs install there. But still i have 47,53 MB storage and 15 MB program memory. Thanks Ivan
Hello Guys,
Today I installed a cab to my phone. Usally I have around 100MB free on my device. But today there where only around 10MB?
I searched around and found a mysterious directory in the Application Data directory called "Volatile" which exactly eats up the missing space...
I said to myself, mhh are you trying to move that directory to storage card and risk a hard-reset? I did it and my device still works.
But I want to know from where this directory "Volatile" came?!
Scilor
the app data\volatile folder is a system temp folder. clearing shouldn't be a problem (unless maybe you clear it before restarting after installing something, perhaps).
You can also reg edit the location to move it to your storage card, at
hklm\system\filesys and change the path.
Thank you, so what exctly it is for?

its the wm5 and above equivalent of \temp in wm2003. just somewhere the system dumps files, especially when installing and such like. so long as nothing is running when you do, just empty it now and again.
Keep it off!
As for the HD2 - you may NOT delete this folder!
Reason for my frequent hardresetting in the past was deleting this folder - directly or by third party apps to gain storage space.
If you did so - your phone won't be able to recognize soundformats - it won't ring or play anything after deleting this folder!
Cover arts will be skipped very fast, because sense thinks that tracks are played in no time. Very frustrating bug.
Discovered it this morning ... and wanted to share it with the community as none knows about that.
I never had a problem with this, I only deleted the content. But thank you for that info.
So I will now just move the files to my SD card
I emptied it regularly when I was on winmo, never had a problem.
As some of you may remember, my first Note 3, which I got a week ago yesterday, was returned for a full refund the next day due to a Nandroid restore failure through TWRP.
However, some of you may also remember that I had an extremely annoying error message pop up continually for the entire 24 hours I had the device.
The error: Unfortunately IndexService has stopped
This error revealed itself every 1-2 minutes. I could not figure out why as there was little information anywhere on the Internet.
However, after picking up a new Note 3 yesterday, and after many hours of trial-and-error file transfers, I think I found the reason ... a corrupt or otherwise damaged/flawed PDF file.
All other files, Word, Excel, Images, Videos, etc., were NOT the cause, and it had nothing to do with the SDCard. It doesn’t matter if you use a 64MB, 32MB, Class 6, Class 10, or UHS-1 type card. The card is not the problem. I know this because, this time, with my new Note 3, I never put in an SDCard. I transferred all files directly to internal storage and, unfortunately, the IndexService error still appeared … every 1-2 minutes.
This time, however, I noticed that the error message appeared only AFTER I transferred all my files to the device, so I knew it had to do with these files, and that’s where I focused my attention.
It took about 9 hours last night and early this morning. I began by deleting all personal files from the device. Result: No error messages. Then, directory-by-directory (I have 12,554 files and 371 directories), I transferred them back to the device, each time waiting about 3-4 minutes to see if the error message would appear. I read in other forums that the problem might be related to PDF files, so I first transferred all other file types. Result: No error messages. Then I begin transferring PDF files. I did so in groups of about 50 at a time. Yes, I have many PDF files; about 2,100 of them. It all came down to two PDF files. Wow, 2 out of 2,100! I can’t explain why, but when I transferred those two files to the device, the error message appeared, and when I deleted them, the error message disappeared.
Fortunately, the two files were not important, so I permanently deleted them; however, before doing so, I thought that they might have originally been written using a very old version of Adobe, and that they simply couldn’t be “read” by the Adobe reader on the Note 3. With this in mind, I opened them in the latest version of Adobe on my PC, and then re-saved them with a new file name; however, the result was the same. They still caused the indexing error. So, at this point I have no idea why they are causing the problem.
Finally, after all my files were transferred to internal storage, without the 2 problem files, I waited 1 hour. No error message. I then put in my Sandisk 32GB UHS-1 card, copied all the files over, and then waited another 30 minutes. No error message. This morning I deleted all the files from internal storage so that I only had them on the SDCard. No error message. It has now been over 24 hours, and still no error message.
SUMMARY:
1) The indexing error is NOT caused by the external SDCard.
2) The indexing error is PROBABLY caused by a problem PDF file(s)
3) The size of the PDF file is irrelevant. My problem files were each about 10MB; however, all smaller sizes, and even the remaining larger-sized PDF files do not cause a problem.
4) Others have suggested that I turn OFF a particular service, but it didn’t work for me.
5) Others have suggested that the error relates to files larger than 200MB. This does NOT appear to be the case in my situation. I have many files that are more than 200MB, and there isn’t a problem.
6) Another xda member said to create a file called .nomedia and place it in the root of the directory where the problem files are located. I tried this, but I still get the error message.
I hope this helps others.

I have been trying to get this problem solved as well -- thanks for spelling out what *isn't* working; I've tried several of these things as well. Killing the app/service, asking the s-finder not to index files, putting the .nomedia files in place have all failed to make it go away. It is a little mind boggling that this is an issue as I've had the same loaded SDcard data (fresh card now, same data) on a note1 and note2 and never had this sort of trouble.
Even when I've killed the indexing service it seems to come back without power cycling, perhaps there is something triggering it to come back.
Hopefully there is an official answer on this soon, the phone becomes unresponsive for seconds all too regularly.

It looks like we've gone through the same thing. Sadly, when the IndexService error exists, it REALLY sucks battery power.
I hope you get yours resolved.

Since I'm going to be travelling this week and need the phone to be reliable, I tried just deleting my document archives for now ( ~ four thousand PDF files mostly)... and what a difference in battery life and keeping that error message away. I hope they fix it so I can have my docs back.

To be honest, I'm not sure if "they" will ever fix it.
At least you know, for sure, that it has to do with your PDF files, just like my situation. Perhaps you can now do what I did, and start copying all the PDF files back to your device, but in large groups ... perhaps 100 at a time. Then wait about 5 minutes, and try another 100.
Logically speaking, though, it would be best to try half your PDF files, so about 2000 first. Then, if you get the error message, remove them all, and re-copy 1000 of them. Slowly but surely you'll narrow down the culprit files. Yes, it may take you a few to several hours, but it can be done, and you'll probably discover that it's simply a few files, or even just ONE file that's causing all the problems.

Peter,
I appreciate your comment -- but the issue is pretty widespread and I suspect the noise level will rise as people start really using their devices (only released on Verizon in the US this past week). They would be unwise not to fix it; the two previous generations of the stock note phones did not show this problem. A bit selling point is the ability to have so much storage (between internal and SD). It is possible that I will someday put the effort in to find any specific files that cause the problem, but the whole directory is synchronized with dropbox and I don't want to have to separate it and lose sync just to work around samsung's bug.
I guess I will give some of it a shot, at least I will copy the folder with mostly books (large files, a few hundred) before the archives of technical literature -- that is a start to see if I can narrow it down. I'll have my nexus7 with me, which happily deals with the same files...
Cheers,
Lance
So if I let this service to run long enough to do its job, will it ever finish? As I noticed it runs only when the screen in on. And the culprit pdf (600Mb) in my case is the only one I really need. Is there any way to block it without root access and permanently?
Thanks!
I think if you add a file named .nomedia to a folder it will prevent any indexing in that folder. A very similar problem can occur with a corrupt music or video file. In that case also, the battery life is killed quickly since it can't complete its scanning. Best to identify the bad files and get rid of them, but if that's not an option, add a .nomedia file to the directory.

This is what I was going to suggest; however, it doesn't always work ... but give it a try.
The ".nomedia" file should be created within your device.

Im surprised you couldn't find anything on the Internet about this issue as it was discussed here in several threads a couple of weeks ago & corrupted .PDF files were seen to be the cause.
I think you could have saved yourself A LOT of time by simply searching XDA for posts "Note 3 indexservice" ....

I'm astounded at your brazen reply. Yes, I searched everywhere, including xda, and there were, at the time, no concrete answers. There were many ideas, but nothing definitive.
Case in point, the ".nomedia" idea from another member on xda seemed believable, but it didn't work for me. Also, and I repeat, AT THE TIME, the majority of suggestions had to do with files over 200MB, but this was also not the case with me.
If you want to help, offer ideas and suggestions. Simply trying to make a person feel bad is counter-productive.

What you don't seem to understand is that the unit I have now is the second Note 3. My problem began with my first unit, which I got on release day in Canada, which was October 4. I returned this particular unit the next morning for a full refund. Believe me, I looked at your link, and the date was October 5, AFTER I returned the original unit.

So is there any way to change pdf files so our Note would not go ballistic about it? How to distinguish between ''good and bad'' pdfs?
Deleted lost interest...
Yeah... I use ezPDF from my S2 on, mainly because it does not have problems with handling any kind of pdf... Adobe and Polaris on the other hand are inferior in my opinion. Any way I am thanking everybody who contributed information on the issue! Hope permanent solution emerges and it should not be the one by eliminating pdf files from my collection.
Regards!
Hi,
This is my temporary solution to the problem…
1. Create folder named ''.nomedia'' (not file in folder) - (I didn't try, but I think that you can name it whatever you want as long as it starts with ''.'')
2. Reboot
3. Copy pdfs to your phone or SD card
4. Unplug USB and move pdfs to folder .nomedia
5. Reboot – because as soon as pdf file that is causing the problem is on the phone's memory, Index service starts and will not stop until you reboot your phone
6. You can access your pdfs through file manager and open them from there.
