SIM Card Read broken ?

Hi,
after i change successfully my harddisk, I try to use
the Sim Card for the 3G Connection for the first Time Today.
I use this Sim Card normally in an Vodafone UMTS Card.
My Shift displays only the Message "Sim Karte fehlt"
I have have no Idea where the Problem is.
Can somebody help me.

If you have replaced the 5mm height drive with a 8mm drive height you will be putting excess pressure on the SIM card socket. This could be causing a bad connection or maybe even damaged it completely.
Try replacing your old drive and see if that restores SIM socket function.
Please be aware that any modifications done by people on this Forum are NOT fully tested at this time and you do them at your own risk.

I know that i do all modification on my own risk.
I open my shift again an I take a look on the read, the SIM Card is not fixed in der Read.
If i insert the SIM Card it sound like the Card is fixed, but if i release my finger it will be squeezed out again. I think that i have a Problem with the Metall tongue that should fix it in the read.
Is there anyony else how had that problem ?

SIM Hotswap

Hy,
I hotswaped my SIM card few times.
Went to Comm Manager, Phone OFF, take SIM out, put another one in, Phone ON...
I'm just curious if something could go wrong by swaping SIM this way, since it is a lot faster not waiting the device to reboot.

Bend it over the battery with a toothpick/stylus or fingernail, then just slide it out. Its actually easy, and it saves time.

Yep its possible !
I would be wary of bending the metal sim retaining bracket though.
On my Kaiser I had to pack it out with a piece of paper to ensure the sim made good contact - and on that phone I hot swapped with no problems.

I have been swapping sim cards quite a few times, I always use paper, the size of a sim card and leave it in inside the cover.
Very easy and the paper protects the battery and sim card from being scratched.

No sim card error

I have the ATT Galaxy S4 and it's been great, but lately it randomly has No Sim Card Error, and askes me to insert one, the only fix for it is taking out the sim, and putting it back on.
Anyone having this problem?

How long have you had the phone for?
I read on another forum, back in early May someone with an S4 also getting the No SIM Card error.

Is your phone modified in any way? Root? Customs roms? Etc. Perhaps there's a problem with your sim card. I would start with that.

it is running a custom rom, but it happened with stock touchwiz also, im trying the tape method, hopefully it'll fix it.

Try getting your company to exchange the sim card and if issue still happens just replace the sim tray yourself unless you got an insurance plan that covers free defective hardware or ship it off to samsung for repair.

I bet I have more experience with this than anyone else with a Samsung Galaxy S4 for AT&T 16 GB
This hand set was run over by a large SUV and I was amazed it survived and kudos to otterbox.
Since then, I've been having this SIM error as well, at random. I see it reported that pulling the SIM out and putting it back in was the only thing that worked, I'm glad simply rebooting works for me, so I don't have to peel apart the otterbox all the time.
I tried the tape and it didn't fix it so I replaced the SIM/SD card tray. The new part on Amazon cost me $14 and the YouTube video showing the operation of peeling these things apart was helpful. I didn't see a video in particular about how they're glued down but I managed to peel the original SIM/SD card tray off, scrape off the adhesive that was still stuck on the motherboard, and install the new SIM/SD card tray.
I still get random SIM errors. No change. Putting a layer of tape on the SIM chip was easy, replacing the tray was difficult, and neither one of these efforts to fix it worked.
My SIM errors are the definition of random, I get one error right after another in just a few minutes, or it will stay lit up and working for hours.
So I put my wife's SIM card in there to make sure it wasn't the SIM itself making the problem. She's never had a problem with her SIM in her Note 2. Guess what, she let me use her SIM in my S4 and it wasn't very long and there it was again. "Please insert a valid SIM" emergency calls only. I gave her back her SIM as soon as I saw the error, as she was not happy about having the cover off the back of her Note 2. I did not get the error when I put my SIM into her Note 2, but was not able to test it for very long, as I got the error on my S4 with her chip so soon.
Next I am going to peel it apart as thoroughly as I can and look for any connector plug that can be unplugged and snapped back in. There was only one little ribbon with a 24 pin connector from the new tray to the motherboard. I'll pull that off again too, and inspect it with a magnifying glass.
I will report if I am able to figure out how to fix this problem.
My wife thinks it's because I flash it, but I doubt returning to stock is even worth the effort. I've never heard of a ROM being the culprit.

It occurred to me that the tape making the SIM chip thicker seemed to help the problem and less SIM errors.
I will also mention the replacement tray was identical to the one I thought was bad.
I was about to take apart the S4 again when I decided to try lots of tape! I stacked 4 or 5 layers of transparent scotch tape on the back of the SIM chip and it was very snug to slide into the slot.
It was so snug it barely returned from it's "in click"....
I am pleased to report an "up time" of over 16 hours, and that's the longest "up time" achieved since getting run over by a full sized Suburban on Olympic Boulevard.

How many pieces of tape did you use? I have been having the same problem and one piece helped for a little but but it has since occurred a lot more often.

I guess I dropped my phone one too many times... started getting the no sim error last week. A reboot fixes it temporarily but the error always comes back (sometimes I'm good for 5 hours sometimes its 5 minutes). Tried the tape method without much luck. Went to the AT&T store to swap out my sim... still no worky. Looks like my only options are replace the phone or fix the hardware. I'd rather not send in for warranty repair/replacement as I don't want to lose the ability to run a custom recovery.
Anyone have any personal experience with replacing the sim/micro sd tray or sending in for third party repair? Found this tutorial on youtube. It looks pretty straight forward and the part is fairly cheap (~ $9) but not sure its worth the risk.

Took the plunge and replaced the sim/micro sd tray myself following the tutorial above. It was pretty painless and only took about 20min. Everything is working and no sim error messages over the past day. :good:

I might keep this in mind, but will wait to see if you really fixed it.
I haven't had a sim error in over a week now, and before that it was over a week as we (just that one time in between).
Sony know what made the problem go away but so far so good.

Well crap... insert sim error just came back (probably jinxed myself with my post). Not sure if it's hardware or software but it's definitely not the sim reader itself. May try to revert to stock just to rule out some variables.
Long story short, don't bother wasting your time, money, or taking the risk of replacing the sim tray.

Me too. Happened twice yesterday.
Is there a possible tasker setting that we can make to restart the sim card if it gets disconnected?

So guys I found a solution that worked with my phone. It seems that the ribbon connector that connects the Sim and microsd is really temperamental so just push down on it and reboot and signal should come back. As a permanent fix I took a 1/4" piece of foam rubber weather stripping and stuck it to the top of the ribbon cable (where it attaches to the mother board). This kept permenant tension on the connector when I put the plastic back in place.

Not a bad idea but I've never played with tasker. If that doesn't work maybe we could find a sympathetic dev to write a few lines of code. Might even be a way to make the system query the sim card to reestablish the status and clear the error without rebooting?
I'd definitely be willing to throw in a few bucks for a fix but I don't think there are enough people suffering with this issue to put together a bounty and/or get anyone's attention. I did manage to grab a logcat if we can find someone willing to assist.

Just purchases an S4 on the good ol craigslist with this problem. It was unlisted as an actual problem of course, however I am 100% certain that's why it was for sale.
I too get the No sim card inserted message. I took everything apart, testing out a few variables. I have isolated it to the actual ribbon cable as someone mentioned above as well. It seems if I reconnect the ribbon cable and reboot it, the phone will read it until the error comes back. Which happens more often than not. I can't even get the plastic housing on without the error coming back.
- I have tried the tape method as well. On the sim, on the top of the ribbon connector, on the back of inside phone shell.
- I have determined it was the ribbon cable by applying pressure to both the Sim and ribbon locations, both at the same time which is the first time I got the phone to read the Sim. Then isolated each area with pressure and a reboot. The ribbon cable and pin connector seem to be the issue.
Reading over some of the other posts in this thread it appears people have already tried a new sim/sd card piece with no improved results. That makes me want to lean towards this is not the SD/SIM side of the connector but more so on the motherboard side. If it is the motherboard I then I am pretty much at a loss and it is not deemed worth investing another 150$ into the phone for a new motherboard.
Will continue to see if I can do anything to improve this issue. Currently the phone is unusable as I fear for any movement on the device before it disconnects the sim, and I remain on my S3 while I continue to investigate.

So, did it fix it? I took the plunge and replaced my reader as well...but still randomly getting that error. I do have an i337m and running an M919 rom though. Im wondering if it might just be the rom but i have tried two different M919 roms...

Stuck SIM tray

hello guys, yesterday I was trying to switch my sd card and what I didnt expect, I couldnt remove the tray.
I thought maybe sim or sd was stuck, so after a while, I was able to gently remove it with a knife.
As it turned out, that wasnt a problem and I still cant remove it fully...
ye...why does this have to happen... anyone have some trick maybe? Or experienced the same problem?

It's possible that your SIM card (or a storage card) has become disloged, ie; is not laying flat in the tray. I think the best you can do is to gently push the tray back in and lay it flat face up and see if you can shake it a bit to get it to settle into the tray. If that does not work, I would take it somewhere for repairs.

I managed to break it, so the stuck piece is still in my phone, but now I am at least able to put a sim and sd card into it.
Contacts little bent, but its how it is and the phone works. Will have to ask about warranty service on this, I am really curious, what will they say...
So be aware, even thing like this can happen...

Yes, this SIM tray is very fragile. You are not the first.

Exact same thing happened to me. I believe there is some clip or contact that detects when the Sim tray is inserted or ejected and it gets caught there. They used a flimsy plastic Sim tray and it breaks in the same place.
The SD card and Sim tray still work. Just have to reset the phone when you change it for the phone to detect the changes.

Happened to me exactly like yours...i used a very this bit of plastic, with a bit of blue tack very firmly attached to the plastic and gently, VERY gently pushed it in to the sim/sd card slot and only took 2 attempts but the bit that broke off came out!!
Then went on Ebay and got a brand new sim/sd card tray and voila!
Cost me £4.50 for new sim tray, but working perfect now.

Any ideas on extracting w/o breaking the tray?
I have the exact same issue as the OP (before his tray broke).
Does anyone know any tricks to extract a stuck tray without breaking it?
edit: nm. Broke the tray. Took no force at all.
So the issue here is one of the SIM reader pins is sticking up and is catching the tray. Trying carefully to bend it back where it belongs.
edit #2: Can't bend the pin back w/o disassembling the phone. Going to borrow a heat gun.

Hey there Matt, I got exact same problem, tray got stuck and I rushly pull left over broken tray. I replace the sim tray but now sdcard not working. It is detected and attempt to format the card but fail at 20%. I'm still try to repeatly removing sim tray before I take it to LG.

So you meant when replace that sim tray, you need to hard reset so it will detect the sdcard? Because I have sim tray replaced, sim worked but sdcard wasnt, it keep fail to format at 20%.

You must have damaged some pins. For me all my.pins are intact and the broken piece is still in the phone. I have to do a hard reset for mine if I want to change the Sim or SD card

Same here. Damaged SIM reader pin. Tore the phone down and it's not clear if it's repairable or not.
Regardless, I'm writing off my G6 (just 1 month after I got it). I'll pickup a V20 for now, so I don't have to look at another SIM tray.

I went to LG and they ask for mainboard replacement cost $400, what a joke! Looks like they wouldnt replace only damaged part.

Even if you replaced it. It won't be long before it breaks again in the same spot... If it was a metal Sim tray it would be a lot better. I'm going to avoid LG phones from now on.

Happened to me AGAIN yesterday mate, now, like you...my SD card no longer works..ARRGHH!!!

Bad design
I have had 3 LG G6s, each one has had this happen. It sticks in the corner by the sd card contacts. After it catches it will not read SIM until i get a new tray. I think there may be some sort of pressure switch. I wish LG would replace it with a G8x...

Even the models w/o dual sim capability have contacts for a second sim. These rub against and can get stuck at the tiny pads on the underside of many mSD cards. This will cause the tray to get stuck in the frame for additional friction. If this happens to me again i will try to pull the tray out with some adhesive tape to be able to apply force in the middle or at the left side, where the sd sits, instead of the opposite side via the hole.
Especially the newer, bigger mSDs seem to have such pads, none of my old ones has one, that's why i didn't test whether you could sadely remove the pad. Probably there's the bare flash die underneath.

I solved the problem...its called the LG V30!

Hi, I got the same problem. The tray broke down only for the SD card and SIM slot is intact. But the phone does not anymore recognize SIM card. So do you think that I did not damage the reader and it's only a matter of getting a new SIM holder?

If you ran into the issue with a sticky mSD, the contacts for the second sim msy be bent/broken/shorted. Whereas only a short may prohibit use of the primary sim slot. And the contacts may not even be soldered to the pcb on a single sim phone like p870. Otherwise just the flimsy plastic tray broke. On my Iphone 4s it was made of metal. And the lever to push the thing outwards was centered and not to the right side, which makes even pushing out an empty tray difficult.

I finally got replacement tray and can confirm that SIM reader started working again. So it indeed seems that there is a pressure switch and it did not activate when the SD card compartment was damaged. No I just worry do I dare to remove sim tray ever again.

My current 128GB mSD in the p870 has a sticker on the back like most mSDs at higher (32/64GB and up) capacities, but this time there's no friction with the useless contacts for dual sim.
But anyway, once the tray has been pushed out slightly, you have to try to grab and pull from the opposite side while pushing the pin in, otherwise there's high friction.

SIM card not found?

I have an issue with a SIM card recognition. I am on LineageOsS 19.1, I tried changing APN, using different SIM cards, back to stock (same problem), resetting phone with no results. Do you think is it a hardware problem? IMEI and phone number are recognized as you can see on screenshots, so maybe there is an issue with software? Any help much appreciated.

Do you stll have the little white (cardboard?) tray in yours? I think that tray helps put pressure on the sim card.
Also try using a paper clip or something to push the sim card in a little further.. I once had some kind of issue where i guess a black cover fell off the covering door.. and i had a similiar issue.. i eventually figured it out and did this... actually i think if ound the door and pushed it on again..
or maybe teh white tray is in there blocking it and you need to pull it out ?
i think it's something like one of those issues and you can get it working again.
you might even try adding something to make the sim card a little thicker if you don't have the white tray thing.
