Is it just me, or is the Wizard not as good looking as the Magician?
I wish they would give me integrated wireless, WM 5.0, a better bluetooth stack and more ram on the same device.
I really don't need the stupid keyboard. It seems to add quite a bit of thickness.

I totally agree. Its looks like a cheap and tacky attempt to make something look futuristic.
The Keyboard is really personal preference. I know I will get a ton of use out of that keyboard since I type about 30 emails a day on my phone and it is a logical step for HTC.
The wizard has not yet been branded by O2, Orange etc... these companies will add their own personal cosmetic flavour to the device. Have you seen the pictures of the CDMA version of the wizard? It is a very nice looking device(except for that ugly antenna sticking out)

I wouldn't even consider this device if it didn't have a keyboard. A keyboard is the absolute most important factor in any device I consider. Without a keyboard, I don't even look at it.
I thought the spirit of the Jam/Magician was to have a fairly full featured device in a small form factor.
If you need a keyboard, perhaps you should be looking to the Universal.
I bought a Javo case... thought it was too big. I then got a silicon skin for it and still felt it was too thick. I have now resorted to keeping my Jam naked and it feels just right (all puns intended).
Another 4-5 mm from the Wizard and I might look like I'm happy to see everyone I come across with this thing in my pocket.
It might have been a good thing in my dating days, but I'm married now.
Beleive me, if there were rumors about Sprint carrying the Universal, I would be getting one for sure. I'm only considering the Apache because I know I can get one within the next couple months.
Well, I guess I would probably get an Apache for my wife either way. But I would definitely get the Universal for myself. But as it stands right now, it's going to be 2 Apaches, 1 for me and 1 for the wife.
There are no rumors of a CDMA Universal, so there are definitely no rumors of my carrier (Sprint) offering a CDMA Universal. I'm locked into a contract with Sprint, so I can't just leave them. And besides, here in the USA there are only 2 3G networks at the moment, Sprint and Verizon. And both are CDMA (EVDO) so it would have to be a CDMA device for me to get it.
I won't consider it without a keyboard, but I won't buy it unless I can have broadband Internet on it.
I seem to be in the minoriy here, but I don't find the Wizard all that bad in terms of its shape/size/design.
I think first and foremost we need to be focused on FUNCTION, not form. HTC could have made something that looks fantastic and not do anything.
When looking at the side-by-side comparisons of the thickness of the device against the Magician, the extra thickness was necessary to add the slide-out keyboard feature. This is a feature that, IMHO, is well worth the extra thickness. When holding a device in one's hand, thickness is the dimension that's least noticible. I'd rather a device that's a bit thicker than wider or longer.
Couple the slide-out keyboard with WM5, WiFi, more internal memory, and approx. the same width/height as the Magician, and I'm sold.
While I agree it doesn't look "great", its far from ugly. Thickness? Please, it's still overall smaller than a Nokia 6600 and compared to the Magician the extra thickness is only half a centimeter... oh no!
I would have preferred that they went with a more professional look rather than this "styled" look. I'm glad to see that they keyboard is backlit - all the photos so far (except for the ones on the .nl site) haven't shown this.
I think I'll be getting the Wizard over the Apache simply because of the aerial. I'm not too fussed about the slower speed, but an external aerial would annoy me.

All I wanted was a thinner JAM with wifi. I don't need a keyboard with my pdaphone. If i did, i would be going for the Universal, the Treo, a Sidekick or some HP device... :roll:
The JAM's design is elegant and functional. The Wizard's design isn't elegant, even though it may be very functional. (the Galaxy looked like my perfect pdaphone, until I realised it wasn't one... ) :lol:
Here's hoping that HTC will bring out a true succcessor to the minimalist JAM.

As has already been discussed - its a dual core processor which should help somewhat AND since it has a low clock rate this will help save battery life.
This isnt meant to be an "uber" PDA, its meant to be a small phone that can do the tasks of a PDA. If you want something faster, then you're going to have to get the Universal which is also bigger and has a VGA screen.
Whats the problem with MiniSD other than having to buy a new card? I needed to get a new SD card anyway... so I guess this is another non-issue for me

I fail to see why I am a "dumbass". It will be considerably slower than a 400MHz Xscale processor, but the fact that its dual core will help it out. I see no contradiction between those two statements.
As for the SD cards - theres always eBay to sell your old ones on

Gotta admit it DOES look as if its scowling at me when put next to the magician
Cant really see why people are getting so personal in their insults and defences about this phone tho .... when it comes down to it the phone hasnt actually been in anybodys hands yet so until some brave soul actually goes out and gets one its all just conjecture
is anyone else here disappointed with the lack of choice at the moment? its either the Universal or Wizard and each one for me has serious drawbacks: universal is tri band with no high speed option for the US, wizard has miniSD ( i currently have over 1GB of data on mine.) The BA design has everything and just needs EDGE for US and 3G for Europe, improved camera, WM5.

Well there are the HP IPAQ 6515 (and the future 6715 which has WiFi and WM 5.0). Plus the new Motorolla Q so there are others out there coming out soon.
Hi all... After some thorough and deep thinking, I have finally decided to buy another Windows Mobile device. HTC Wizard is definitely the device of choice for me, as it has the one thing I need to have, a QWERTY keyboard... Except the processor powering it kind of downer (although my hopes are up again with the recent benchmark). But today, out of nowhere... I got myself a BenQ P50 to be tested! The fabled device that shook the gadget world last year, and off course, a laughing stock of many because it's only available in Taiwan and some part of England if I'm not mistaken...
I work for a gadget magazine, and the arrival of the P50 is a shocking event indeed in my country (it is sold by private importer, not BenQ). It has BT, Wi-Fi, [email protected], and QWERTY keyboard WITH backlight! (I remember reading it doesn't have a backlight) And should I mention the price? It's only US$610! US$40 cheaper than the O2 XDA II Mini (the price might hike as demand soar... And I bet it will)
Off course it only has 64 Megs of RAM and ROM so WM 5.0 upgrade is out of the question. But it has QWERTY keyboard and Wi-Fi, with a proven fast and power efficient processor. But currently, XDA II Mini has nothing to offer besides longer lasting battery to boot against the P50 (The P50 has a laughable 1260 mAH)
One thing I like about WM 5.0 is the persistent storage, but other than that, nothing... I dunno... It's very tempting to buy the P50, as the Wizard might be available early next year here in my country... I am ready as I can be to let go my Treo 650.
Ive heard really bad things about the BenQ - poor build quality, poor performance, poor battery life etc...
The Wizard's TI CPU is far more battery efficient than Intel processors and (apparently) does more per clock cycle than an Intel CPU.
The Wizard is smaller (because the keyboard can be slid away) and the keyboard is backlit too.
Windows Mobile 5.0 is a godsend - persistant storage means that not only will you never lose your apps or documents but you'll also have a longer lasting battery!
I seriously would forget the BenQ.
Okay... Your point is very much valid except for performance (the joystick doesn't offer good tactile feedback, and the QWERTY keyboard is not as practical as the Blue Angel). As of speaking, I am running spb benchmark program on the P50, XDA IIi result will follow... I will update my post after the benchmark. But anyway, does anybody have a benchmark result for the Magician?
From what I read on the Hofo thread on the P50, the ROM and its updates are horribly unstable and have all kind of flaws. Screen not turning off, problems with speaker, etc etc. Enough bad news for me to wait for the Wizard. WM5 is something I really look forward to, since I hate worrying about batterylife and losing my data. I have Big Storage on my Compact, so I save almost everything in there, but still WM5 would be ideal for me. Plus the benefits of the Wizard over the magician in terms of Wifi, keyboard and a better bluetooth stack are enough to convince me of the Wizard.
That P50 looks really nice. Keyboard, WiFi, only problem is it says WM2003 and not WM5. But as it isn't released yet who knows. Any idea on expected date and price?
Personally, i don't really like the look of the P50. It just looks odd with the keyboard squished on the bottom. Also ooks like the keyboard will be very akward to use as it's right at the very bottom and all that weight hanging out of your hands, far to dropable.
It is for sale through various channels, just check out the thread on the P50 on Hofo (www.howardforums.com). There are quite a few people who own one there and all are more or less unhappy with it. It is definitely running 2003 SE and there is no WM5 upgrade to look forward to. prices etc can also be found there. To me the P50 looked nice a year ago, but with the WM5 devices around the corner the P50 is old school and too late to market.
As promised, direct comparison between the P50 and XDA IIi (Alpine) using spb benchmark... From the left most column... BenQ P50 (optimized mode), BenQ P50 (battery save mode), and Alpine (Turbo mode). The modes I stated is located on the battery tab on the settings menu. Well, it's a good news benchmark wise... Especially on the graphics, despite the processor of both device push 320x240 pixel, the small screen probably helps. Dunno, it seems consistent that devices with smaller screens perform better on spb's graphic index bench.
And yes... The unit I tested is horrible... If I closed the mic when using speakerphone, there's a weird feedback sound. The sound from the speakerphone is minimum (I use the speakerphone to speak normally, because the internal speaker is so weak) but when I used the speakerphone the mic often brushed my cheek... And there's that electric feedback sound problem. Not to mention the very dark camera... It's very awful... The picture taken with my Treo (VGA) is whole lot better in quality :x
But after all, I am reviewing an engineering sample, so probably that's where the problem is... I'll be asking for a non sample product next monday.
Battery... Well, it's not that bad, comparable to the Alpine's 1300 mAh actually.
But all in all... This device (feature wise) can bring down the Magician to its knee (discounting the problems it have). But compared to the Wizard...It's like you guys tell it is... A no contest... But I will monitor closely the processor power of the Wizard.

I had my QTEK 9000 (Universal) well before Cingular (USA) launched their HSDPA. I travel and work at times in the UK so UMTS 2100 is great when I'm overseas. Sadly, Cingular's HSDPA is 1900 & 850, making the QTEK 9000 default (slowly) to GPRS .
The next device out of the chute with multi-band UMTS, VGA resolution, hign end processor, loads of memory and an upgrade path to WM6 for me was the Dopod U1000. It's a little bigger than the QT9000, but after geting used to carrying the 9k, moving up to the U1000 was no problem. It merely opens up new opportunities for other accessories, like the LG Style-I since you can't (won't) hold the Athena up to your face to talk. I've done the BT Headset thing for years and the Style-I is a nice 'eye-catching' gizmo along side the Athena. Both serve the same purpose, not many have ever seen them so the looks are frequent and numerous.
As for the features, the HSDPA in the US is excellent on the Athena and WM6 has been a joy. I have not had to carry (lug) a laptop to the UK as I can do all I need on the Athena. The 5 inch screen is a welcome expansion from the QT9000, and even that being VGA 3.8 inches was much sharper than the over done 320x240 devices which dominate the market. If you want to own one of these devices, IMHO, you want to differentiate yourself from the crowd. Your device speaks volumes about you without you saying a word.
Love the Screen, love HSDPA, love the storage.
Hate the keyboard, hate the lack of vibrate, hate the battery life.
Still can't get myself to get rid of my Universal but do love the Athena.
Satisfied.
Love the Universal keyboard and backlight. Everything else I think I love the Athena on. I won't go back the Universal....the Athena outperforms it so love the additional power.

i love it had universal n a few other pocket pcs this is the best untill the shift comes !! downside again need bt headset no vibrate a pain at work as is on sillent n its big but welll worth it
Im just about to finally part with my Universal (XDA Exec) as I am now happpy with the Ameo I have.
I'll miss the keyboard as the Ameo one is totally pants and very unresponsive - but im working on getting a small USB one for it soon so wont take the crappy one with me any more!
I love Athena more than UNI except the keyboard and the size. The rest Athena outperform my UNI.

As far as I am concerned the Athena is very good. I use mine for a lot of things every day,and my only complaint is the un-lighted keyboard.
Now, if the Shift is anywhere near as good as this one is,I will be in heaven.......LOL

Hate the keyboard, waste of time and has caused more scratches then I would have without one.
Love the possibilities on this thing though and having a 5" screen makes it all worthwhile...Universal does just not cut the mustard like the Athena IMHO.
You gotta be on crack to ask such a question.. who wouldnt be fully satisfied... It has way better performance and structure. I hate putting the Uni to my ear and this ones done it!
It's great... For about 2 hours a day.
Battery life is atrocious. Using it the way I do, fpr MP3 player, GPS, calls, web browsing, Push Email, the battery dies on me in about 2 1/2 to 3 hours. Carry a USB cable or my charger with me at all times now... Love the device itself, tho.

I love the device more and more as problems get solved. I believe the last major problems to be fixed were the Jabra BT8010 issues - thanks to the program Priority256_fix.
I'm sure I would not have liked the device nearly as much without the help of this forum.

I also have the same feelings as other members have posted.After Update to WM6, I had been facing problem with Bluetooth Sound, I use this as my main phone.I get 100 calls a day and in some cases the caller cannot hear my voice.I use Jabra 8010.
Else, the device is cool.I hv tried disabling Microdrive and battery lasts for 3 days
Any one here can make/find disable Microdrive Programatically, then it will b boon.
The Universal has severed me well for several years, but I feel that there must be something newer, shiner out there.
(I basically want a new toy)
I love having a proper keyboard, the ability to open word/excel files as well as web browsing and email.

I got an XDA Orbit - but still keep going back to my Exec. It may be bulky but I still love the flexibility of it.
Take a look at HTC Athena or HTC Shift, its bulky but a step up indeed.
I'm not moving on, the Uni is still the best IMHO. No other phone has a full keyboard (including number buttons), VGA screen, normal sized SD card slot, 3.5mm headphone socket, 3G, and massive extended batteries of over 5000mAH. The Athena is not counted, since you need a headset or speakerphone to use it as a "phone", which I find too inconvenient.
I will not upgrade until a phone comes out which has most if not all of the above features.
I upgraded to O2 XDA Atom Life a couple of weeks ago. I never used the keyboard of universal, so, being keyboardless on atom life does not hurts. 1gb rom is a big plus. I've stored everything on my device(including a 600mb movie too ). Its fast(624MHZ) too. Its qvga, but, at 2.8', it looks sweet. And hey, its beautiful from outside too
Overall, a happy guy. Impressed with quanta's hardware quality too.

Kaiser - the HSDPA and GPS nearly makes up for the lack of VGA screen and full number row.

I'm upgraing to... The universal! Yep apart from going to the athena which i dont have the money for nothing compares to the Universal. Must admit the Kaiser did appeal to me but with it's GPS chip, but a 400 Mhz processor and QVGA persuaded me to that the Uni was better. Now if HTC was to put a GPS chip in the Uni? It'd be perfect and have everything.

Which way are the ROM cookers going to jump? I have to say the hard work of those guys really brought the best out of my hermes.

i would guess the cookers who pref keyboard will go kaiser

I don't like the shoddy video performance on the Kaiser, it's also not quite clear to me if the Kaiser can be folded out flat, which is far more useful if you aren't at a desk than the 'pop-up' motion. Also, I use a bluetooth Sirf Star 3, which is infinitely better than the crappy built-in GPS on the Kaiser.
The Kaiser (and my hermes) just seems to be beginning to feel just a little too bulky !

1. I already have a Garmin GPS 10 (Bluetooth), so I really don't need the GPS of a Kaiser. I run Garmin Mobile XT (& BeelineGPS) from my SD card, so space isn't an issue either. And this is all more than accurate enough for my Geocaching adventures!
2. I have a 2 gig microSD (soon to be upgraded to 4 or 6 GB), so I really don't need the extra memory of the Kaiser (especially with these memory freeing ROMs - thanks to our ROM Chefs!) Even with my GPS maps, I still have plenty of room on my microSD.
3. I just recently went from carrying a Motorola RAZR, Dell Axim X50v and Bluetooth Keyboard ... to carrying only the AT&T 8525 (a.k.a. Hermes 100). So, I'm still enjoying carrying only 1 device.
4. True it's sort of large, but not as much space as 2 devices. Besides, it's not that bad when I use the leather belt holster or place it in the hidden pocket of my Docker's Mobile pants (part of Docker's premium line - so I can wear them at work). It's small enough that it doesn't bulge out on my leg, so it truly remains hidden!
5. Also, as far as size goes, if the keyboard/thumbboard was any smaller, I think it would loose it usefulness.
6. With all of our cooked ROMs, we're getting all sorts of software-based advantages of newer models. Why pay more $$$ for the same stuff?
Maybe I should be a salesman for HTC?

If you used your Hermes for video playback and want to continue doing so with your new device then you'd better steer clear of any of HTC's devices using the Qualcomm 7200 and 7500 chipsets!
Why ditch your phone just cause your contract is running out? Pay month to month and keep your Hermes!

I went into o2 on thursday to see if i wanted to get out a contract for a kaiser.
saw the phone picked it up and the screen was abit loose.. wobbling when flat on the keypad. I had also read about the issues with drivers / choppy graphics and that was the decider.. i walked straight back out and got a hermes, and imo it feels alot better and more secure than the kaiser. so i would wait until they revise the design of the kaiser or something.
I'd have to agree that the few advantages of the Kaiser are not enough for me to trade in my Hermes. The video issues alone are incredibly crippling...I watch alot of video on my Hermes and to have to fight with video drivers on a $600+ device is unforgivable.
The Kaiser does have a 3.0MP camera, but the default camera drivers on HTC phones has always been ****. Cool Camera's software give much more control and was the software that took the photos from my Hermes from looking so-so to being very nice. I could only guess that the Kaiser's camera could only look even better running Cool Camera software on it.
The GPS issue isn't much of an issue for me. I don't use GPS too often, but it would be nice to have it built in rather than to have to get out the Bluetooth unit.
The tilting keyboard I've yet to be able to see as very useful. I don't put my phone on a table and peck away at my keyboard...I hold it and type with my thumbs. However, I could see it as being slick for watching videos.
But even with all that, I don't want to drop all that money for a phone that does the same thing mine does, just slightly better. A tilting keyboard, slightly better camera, and built in GPS simply aren't enough to warrant the cash required for a Tilt.
Even though it is being somewhat of a traitor around here, it was the Kaiser's lack of large enough advancements that caused to pick up an unlocked iPhone rather than a Kaiser. I figured I would have the Hermes with all of its Windows Mobile bad ass-ness, and the iPhone for music and video.
...and then Slide 2 Play with coverflow comes out two weeks later. Go figure. There went my reason for the iPhone. ; )
