WiFi uses GPRS Proxy - Fix without removing Proxy? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

I've got GPRS and WiFi working perfectly.
However, everytime I switch between WiFi and GPRS, I got to reentern/remove the proxy server.
My GPRS REQUIRES the use of the proxy, so there's no going around that, and there are no unlimited data plans on the non-proxy access point [face_cry]
I've looked through both HowardForums (where I am from, I've been a Symbian user until now) and here for already existing info.
Aside from finding tons of people who couldnt get the wifi to work because of the proxy, none of those threads gave a solution that included KEEPING the proxy server for GPRS.
If there is a thread with the information to get WiFi to NOT use the GPRS proxy, just link me to the thread and Ill figure out the rest on my own
Thnx! Hope I'll get my post count increased fast so I'm not considered as a post-and-leave user.

of course u can keep the the proxy server for GPRS and surf the internet via wifi ~~
but pity that my device's interface is in chs & my broken english
(if i misunderstand ur thread, dont brick me )
u can fix it ,follow below
start menu--setting---connection--connetion,or u can see my device' captures pic1
(i dont really sure if ur device is that path,i just translated it from chinese to english)
select the icon in green (pic1)
a new window like pic2,just do it
and the key step in pic3:
the two places in red circle
dont select ur wap setting ,select my isp or my network is ok
when u want to connect internet via gprs,u rechange to ur gprs setting
enjoys

oh I understand what you mean. Yes that way I dont have to retype my proxy addresses.
Sadly, it's still not automated from what I see
I'll have to make a shortcut for that section.
Thanks woohyuksheng!

Cingular proxy cabs
Cingular has a set of cab files that enable/disable the proxy settings. if you search this forun you will find then. they are also in the latest cingular rom, black 3.0, and custel 1.3.
if you are not on cingular you could try and edit the cab files with your carrier info.
give it a try.

It didnt work for me. I'll explain below, but first I want to say I found my own fix. (however, it sucks to switch my fix back and forth)
Woohyuksheng's trick didn't do anything either.
My fix for WiFi usage
Thanks JCB Dalek!
All I needed was to add DNS addresses for my Wifi adapter and to EnableAutoDetect=1

Ignore this , I changed everything I said

Vodafone live and jasjar

I have a normal sony 3g phone and i can access all the vodafone live content with streaming video etc, how can i set my jasjar up so it can access the same content and stream video etc from vodafone
Cheers
Chris
you need PV player installed (find it thought a search on this forum) plus the direct url which im still trying to find myself.
First off, you need to connect to Vodafone live! using the wap connection details rather than the usual "internet" APN.
Set this up using the "Work" connection. Go "start", "settings", "connections" then click on the "connections" icon. Go to "My Work Connection". Click on "manage my connections" then click on "Vodafone wap" which should have wap.vodafone.co.uk under the number column (I am assuming you have installed the Vodafone CAB which automatically puts in this connection). Move across to the tab which says "Proxy settings". Tick the box which says this network connects to the Internet. Tick the box which says This network uses a proxy server. Click on Advanced, then tap on HTTP . Enter 212.183.137.12 in the Server box and enter 8799 in the Port box. Click ok. Right, that is first part done.
Second part requires editing registry. PEASE BACK UP your registry before proceeding. For Vodafone Live! WAP page to think you are a 3G mobile, you have to fool it into believing you are an 'approved' handset. For internet explorer, the registry key to change is:
[HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\5.0\User Agent\]
Change (Default) from Mozilla/4.0 to 'Nokia6630' and clear all the other values such as compatible, Desc, Platform, UA-language, Version.
You may need to reboot after making these changes.
Once you've changed these settings, connect to Vodafone Live! (make sure you are in UMTS coverage) and goto: http://live.vodafone.co.uk
Now you should see Vodafone live come up in full view with images and extras. Sky TV is available but I still have problem getting it to link properly into the PVplayer. At the moment I have to copy the link and then open PV player and paste it for it to play. use the Pocket Plus Internet plugin to do this with ease. Sometimes some of the channels are not working properly, so go to Channel 4 and test that first. Hope this helps.
admsi
might seem strange i follow your instructions right the way through but then everytime i get to the live page it trys to download a file called my docusmts/If i try to rename or save elsewhere or even save as that name it says file in use by other program and wont let me do it.
Any ideas
Peter
Would it not be easier just to make a note of the urls (link address) then connect your universal to the wap gateway (as directed by admisi) then enter the shortcut into pv player? This way would save you messing with pie? BTW I tried the instructions out myself however all I managed to do is make my pie crash (had to hard reset to fix things)
Hi Ratcom,
Just sent you a pm making some progress now got live working etc etc

PM repied ! Good luck and dont forget them url's
Thought the same myself about the URLs and even saved them all as favourites in PV Player. But, you guessed it, they keep changing, so URL doesn't stay valid. Pain in the backside.
Pvplayer
I am Trying to setup Vodafone Live on my XDA Exec according to the Instructions of this Forum.
Unfortunatley I cant find a copy of PVPlayer. does anybod know how to get it. ITs available on there site for a nokia for a very reasonable price, however I cant find it anywhere for Pocket Pc.
Any Ideas?
Hi
Here it is
Authorization Failed
I think I am getting warmer.
I have entered all the settings as above.
However clicking the link does not launch the tv in pvplayer.
so I tried copying the link rtsp://stream.vodafone.co.uk/lv/lv01/live/vf-stream-t-27.sdp into the pvplayer directly, however I get a message saying Authorization Failed.
Anybody know what I am doing wrong?
Thanks for the info guys worked a treat, only thing we need to fix is the live tv streams to open and work automatically in pvplayer, anyone any ideas how
Thanks
Chris
anybody know where this vodafone cab is?
I don't have a clue what to put as username, password, domain or access point name if i try to create a connection manually.
I did find a cab Vodafone UK Contract.cab from Imate, but it did nothing, i installed it into main memory, resetted and nothing had changed so I uninstalled it again!
I dont have the Vodafone Cab File but here are the settings that u need:
Make an internet connection,
use cellular line GPRS 3G
Access Point NAME: wap.vodafone.co.uk
username: wap
Password: wap
then for this connection you need to setup a proxy.
Http: 212.183.137.12:8799
This should work i think.
This is the cab file run it and it will install the vodafone internet and wap settings on your device then you dont need to enter any passwords etc.
I have done this and followed all the instruction byt cant get the tv to play it says unauthorised anyone any ideas
Cheers
Chris
excellent, working like a dream over here!
shame that the tv's buggered tho any progress on this working?
ERm is that Cab file Above Complete?
I ran it however it does not seem to have added any connection settings?
it changes the registry to point to /program files/vodafone uk contract
however when I browse for that directory it does not exist.
Is the Cab Above just for the Imate or would it work on a XDA EXEC Also?
Thats all i did and it installed the wap connection settings
I assume those guys getting Unauthorised Access are using Vodafone SIM cards with 3G enabled - otherwise you're wasting your time!

Complete newb to my Qtek... (Cingular US Settings)

Hi there, I'm about to update my Qtek 9100 to the latest WWE ROM posted last week. Is there anything very important I should know before I do this? I already backed up all my information and files, and I'm currently running on the Cingular US network. I tried searching for the official Cingular 8125 ROM but wasn't able to find it. I really, REALLY want to have the exact same settings as the 8125 does for connecting to the internet so I get full speed EDGE and the best phone signal it can offer. Could anybody please tell me how to set up my Qtek so it's exactly the same, including the E icon when I'm in an EDGE-covered area? I did a search for everything, but all I managed to find were a bunch of posts where everybody knew what everybody else was talking about. I managed to find the cab file named "Signed_Edge_Icon.sa" but I honestly have no idea what to do with it. As I said, I'm completely new to this, and I just want my Qtek 9100 to perform the best it possible can on Cingular's network. Thank you so much!
Cingular Settings
Hi,
Cingular has a blow by blow description of the settings.
https://onlinecare.cingular.com/dev...ingular.atgnow.com/cng/tutorials/KB56475.html
are the internet settings
.... and .....
https://onlinecare.cingular.com/dev...ingular.atgnow.com/cng/tutorials/KB56044.html
are the MMS settings
And for the cab file, just use activesync (press the explore icon) to drag the cab file to you phone and then tap it to run it.
Cool, I got that cab installed, but I'm having trouble with those Cingular settings... I don't have a "Set up Proxy Server" option under the first My ISP list. I do have it under My Work Network, but to my understanding that is a completely different connection option. Is it okay to have the wap.cingular connection under My ISP and the proxy server information under My Work Network, or should I just put everything under My Work Network and leave My ISP alone?
Through my experience the proxy settings for Cingular do two things (one good one bad) and your decision to use them should be based on which is more necessary to you.
1. The proxy settings allow you to use the MEdia Net homepage at device.home
2. The proxy settings screw with your WIFI connection and cause timeout errors and such when attempting to browse at home.
I personally find that the MEdia Net homepage is nice, but I can live without it or even replace it with other things like google.com/ig.
If you want to enable the proxy settings on the My ISP panel go to the advanced tab and create a new profile where My ISP is. For some reason the new one will allow you to put in proxy settings, but the default My ISP won't.

Vodafone GPRS Settings?????

Assistants required!!
I have attempted to set up GPRS on my M600 (Unlocked for Vodafone sim)
GPRS has been enabled as I have the G icon up!
I have been on the vodafone website and tried there settings with no luck!
I have been on the Filesaveas website and plugged in all of those settings with NO luck, Have also installed the I-mate .cab again with no luck!!!
I am starting to go insane spent three days trying all different settings and No luck at all!!!!
You name the website and I think Ihave probably tried it.
Does anyone have any useful advise for me, provide me with some form of sanity check!!!!
Ideally I wold love a .cab file to install!
But would like feedback from anyone else in a similar position, on how they resolved this some what annoying issue!!!!
regards
Wilko_007
I set up my Vario II for Vodafone with no problem. These settings (*.pdf file) seem to be the same as the ones I used, see how they compare with the settings you are using.
Many thanks I will give it a go!
Ok have now got connection but I can't surf?
I have seen comments about GPRS beening fully enabled?
Are there 2 forms of GPRS that can be enabled? WAP & WEB???
Do I need to worry about the Dialing Rules???
Thanks in advance for your assistance!!
[/img]
Could you be a little more specific i.e. does it come up with a pop-up box stating that it is connecting to GPRS? If yes, which connection does it say it is connecting to, is it the correct one (i.e. the new GPRS settings that you have just keyed in)? When you say it won't surf, what do you mean exactly ... are you using Pocket IE and does it come up with any error messages etc...
Connection via GPRS No probs I then get the Small G and the two arrows fixed on the bar.
Enter IE and type google for example.
get the status bar flash up breifly and then disapear, with no change to the original Orange World Home page!!!
No errors what so ever????
okay ... the next thing I would probably do then is download an alternative browser to see if it still happens in a different browser. Netfront is pretty good. At least that way you should be able to establish if it is a GPRS problem or a browser problem.
Ok I now have installed Netfront and connected to the GPRS!
typed in www.google.com
I have a warning screen:
Browser Warning
Cannot load Page
Type: DNS no server is specified
?????
Okay .. I am running out of ideas now, it does sound like your GPRS Settings are still wrong.
Click 'start menu', 'settings' and go to the 'Connections' tab. Now click 'Connections', then the 'Advanced' tab then 'Select Networks'. The first box (ie. Programs that connect to the Internet automatically) should say 'My Isp' and if you click 'Edit', it should show you 'Vodafone Internet' is selected.
If you then select to edit that, you should see in this order 'Vodafone Internet' and then it should show modem type as GPRS, next page should show Access Point Name of 'Internet', next page should show User name 'Web' ... password is the same, domain field should be blank ... nothing needs to be done in the advanced tab because the default of 'Use-server-assigned IP address' should automatically be selected, same for the server tab too, default should be server-assigned.
These are the settings that work fine on both my XDA Mini S and my MDA Vario II.
Right I have checked both ISP and MyWork Network, all correct!
The only thing I can see is that the password box has loads of characters (*'s) instead of just 3 *'s for WEB (***)
But every thing else is as the PDF??
Stumped!!!!
you can try messing with the newly released ms network tools there is a link in development forum
or you can try manualy typing in a know dns server in the settings
unless the gprs dont route the request
any dsn server ip will do
same as pc's really
I am afraid I don't know then ... we have reached the level of my knowledge (which isn't high )
Perhaps somebody with a little more technical knowhow on GPRS issues may be able to help you.
Sorry I couldn't get it sorted for you.
Thanks for your help a least I can connect now!!
Thank you again!!
anyone heard of the connection No. being *99#?
Vodafone instructed me to put that in the setup?
I guess that goes in under the " My Work Network" Vodafone Wap - Number?
This is now becoming a huge headache anyone got any ideas?
not sure how vodaphone handle it but i never heard about
ppl having to add numbers when they picked gprs as connection
belived that was only if you connected around grps

I'm expericening a similar problem.
My phone was sold as an O2 XDA Mini S. My O2 contract/account doesn't allow GPRS (they want me to upgrade) so I tried my Vodafone PAYG SIM and it works without having to have the phone unlocked in any way. By that I mean I can use voice calls and using the settings I've found through this site I can send MMS messages via GPRS but I cannot connect to the internet. I've checked with Vodafone and the account will allow internet and GPRS etc.
The only thing that I can see that is wrong is the password. Whenever I type "web" then finish, it always defaults back to a string of 16 ***'s when I re-check the settings.
I've even done a hard reset and used the corporate install to no avail. I don't want to run any sort of unlocking software if I don't need to as I don't want to create a very expensive door stop.
Any ideas?
The string of asterisks is normal, I think it is just a method used by Windows to make the password more difficult for someone to guess i.e. by disguising not only the characters but also the number of characters.
I just double checked and my fully working settings also show a row of asterisks despite it being a 3 character password.
Thanks Nicky
I'll keep plodding away with this but hopefully someone might steer me in the right direction soon.

Hit advanced
Select Use server assigned IP address
Select Use IP Header compression

Select Use server assigned address
HIT OK
Hit finished
Proxy Settings:
Select This network connects to the Internet
Select This network uses a proxy server. . . .

Select MEdia Net then its totally done and to test it out go to
http://device.home/(It wouldn't normally work with out the proxy settings)
Well, I found them.
It's all over Howardforums.com for years if you'd search there.
I searched and nothing. But this is help full for people on here too.

Am sure a few lazy so and so's like...erm me (sometimes) will find this useful. Maybe put some other settings up on this post for other operators. Perhaps worth a look around via search first as its likely to be something that someones already done. But can't be sure.
best

Why not just use a .cab to do it automatically?
This is the one I've been using:

Also, I recently found out I could add MediaNet under My ISP. So now if I have Wifi on, it'll use Wifi. Otherwise it'll use MediaNet.
I had MediaNet seperate so I kept having to change it. Much better this way.

This is something that I've been trying to figure out for a while. How do you add MediaNet under My ISP. I would love to be able to be on the WIFI while at work and then change to ISP when I leave.
thanks,

I am also very curious about this.
Settings > Connections > Connections
Advanced tab > Select Networks
With My ISP selected, click "Edit." Then click "New..." at bottom and enter in the MEdiaNet stuff.
Thanks alot for the info. I was having trouble accessing Cingular Video after flashing to Duttys rom.
i was very confused about this and erased all of the connections
why is there Media Net and AT&T ISP GPRS?
I know this is supposed to be for *dummies*
so i guess i am one
But what's the reasoning behind needing two of them?

One is Media Net Access(and the whole internet) and the other one is for tethering.
5 stars!
Thanks, this helped a lot. Now to figure out how to tell my cooked 6.1 ROM that I am on AT&T and not roaming. Seems to be a bug on every 6.1 ROM I have flashed.

It is the only way to learn.
Are there any new settings for at&t? I want to update this.
I was hoping someone would figure out how to manually select a tower in AT&T.

I am not sure if there is anything new but this didn't work for me. I tried this on my Tilt 2 flashed with Sergio76's The Cell ROM v9.5 AT&T (just has the AT&T dialer and nothing else AT&T). I had used a cab that fixed all of the settings to what's in the post except the AT&T ISP which I took care of no problem. However, when I go to Media Mall and search for an app, I'm told there are no results for my handset. I looked at the device ident in the settings and the IMEI is there but the s/n is wiped and I can't edit it. Maybe with a regedit...I dunno. I haven't had the time to try that. It was an idea. There's something that was wiped off the phone that identified my device to AT&T...maybe some sort of hidden proxy or certificate or simply the s/n. I haven't found any Tilt 2 users so far that are able to or even use the Media Mall so I dunno. If anyone else knows something or has figured this out please clue me in. I wouldn't mind being able to get back to the media mall.
Thanks for any help...

Has anyone been able to figure out or locate a cab for adding an Internet Sharing? I found few cabs but nothing that works... Please help! Thanks...
Update, Internet Sharing cab working with T-mobile Web proxy!
Never mind.. got it to work.... I was getting an error message in Internet Explorer when trying to use the cab with Proxy hack from T-mobile similar to this:
HTTP ERROR: $CODE$
$MESSAGE$
RequestURI=/
To fix this, look here. All you need to do is enter your proxy settings & port into Internet Explorer or Firefox and you will instanly be able to use the Internet Sharing...
eruscool said:
yes i connect with the proxy on a regular basis, you have to set IE to work with the proxy. assuming you have IE7 tools/internet options/connections tab/lan settings and check the box that says "use a proxy server for you lan" once you do that enter the same proxy from you r phone along with the port ( 216.155.165.50 :8080 ) you will now be able to surf with the proxy, just remember that when your home and connect you laptop to your Wlan or whatever you have you have to go back into the settings and uncheck the box "use a proxy server for your lan" because if you dont IE will still be trying to reach the net through the proxy server and you will have no internet, the only draw back is that you will have to check and uncheck every time you switch connections.
now i never use anything other than IE so i dont know what programs can reach the net on the proxy.
