I'm not sure if it's just me but I don't have a GPS settings icon inside the settings folder. My other PDA which has WM5 and GPS has the GPS settings so you can change the com software port, hardware port, etc. So does the P3600 just not have it or am I missing it? Oh and I'm also updated to the latest ROM from HTC's website.
search this forum. there is a reg key for it
Most apps don't need it, especially with the newer ROMs (Radio 1.38 onwards)
Just point your GPS apps at COM9 (the GPS Hardware port) at 57600 baud, and the software driver will intercept the call and provide the signal.
Older ROM's still need the GPS registry fix to show the CP

Add GPS settings icon
If you have a GPS device, you can add a GPS settings icon to your Start > Settings menu using:
HKLM\ControlPanel\GPS Settings\Group = 2 (DWORD decimal)
HKLM\ControlPanel\GPS Settings\redirect <-- delete, or rename, this value
Note that '2' stands for the Connections tab, '1' is System and '0' would be Personal
Note also that this has reportedly disabled one person's USB connectivity. To restore, set "GPS Program Port = None", "GPS Connection Port = None", "Automatic GPS Management = on"

I have done this but I have tried 3 programs (1 was TomTom) and it can't get a fix

Be more patient.... and make sure you're in an open space... (that means uninterupted view at the sky from y'r device).
The very first fix ever can take up to 10 minutes or more sometimes (that's a 'cold' start).
Yeah it actually does take a while to get a fix the first time.. It took me about 5 mins to get a fix, but after about 5 more mins after getting a fix I was getting full bars on tomtom.
The quoted registry fix is incorrect/incomplete for the P3600
Go to HKLM/ControlPanel/GPS Settings which has 2 keys; Default and Hide.
Open the Hide key and change the Dword to 0 then Save.
This will place a GPS Setting Icon in the 2nd tab of Settings.
In Settings, changing both ports to 'none' will disable GPS. The hardware port must be set to COM9 and the baud can be 57600 or 115200.
Once those are set, any GPS program can be pointed to COM9 and they should get a fix within about 5 minutes with a clear sky view.
If you want to share the signal between more than one app, you need to point the app at the software port; most apps don't list GPD1 (the default) as a valid soft port, so you need to change the software port to COM8 and set the GPS apps to seek a signal there. TomTom and Co-pilot however, can't open the software port by themselves, so it's safer to leave them with exclusive access on the COM9 hardware port.
On the P3600 Radio ROM 1.38 onwards, life is a lot easier, as everything can be pointed at COM9, and the software correctly distributes the signal as needed, which it should have done from the start.
if you just don't wanna be messed up digging in the registry, download trinityhacks 0.3 and you can activate the gps icon, which is not needed, because the settings of the gps are preset. downtown of Budapest it takes more than 10 mins to get a fix, but after that it just works fine.

Dear forum members,
I have problems with setting up the com port with my GPS bluetooth device (Nemerix chip set) and my navigation software (Navigon 4 or 5).
I see the device in the bluetooth settings of WM5 and am able to connect to the device. I am able to select the serial port feature and create a new outgoing connection to either com port 6 or 7 with the device.
I am not able to select this com port in the navigation software.
I am not able to see this port in PHM device manager
Yes, I am able to see the device in "Glopus GPS" tool (but only because I am able to have a list of all 10 com ports)
My questions:
Any idea why the com port is not showing up in the navigation software?
Do you know any other device manager or (serial) com port tool in order to get this com port working the right way?
The thing is, this all worked on WM2003 on a Magician, so is this now a new cool WM5 feature that the bluetooth com ports are not showing up the right way :?
Thanks for your help in advance, Saniwat

No idea. But i know, how you can make it visible: There are three inis in your Navigon directory: defaults.ini, navlib.ini and spgps.ini
Edit the files with the total commander. In each file you will find an entry like: Com-Port or Serial Port. Delete the number behind that statement and write 6 or 7 respectively where you have mapped your Mouse to.
Start the Navigon and it will work. It is very easy.

Alternatively you can use the virtcom tool from this page:

The BT Com Port is in WM05 a resource of a certain program. Each time you start a Porgram wich needs BT Support, it starts automatically the BT interface. You dont need to setup a connection automatically
There is a more convenient way to do this:
Open the prefs.ini (configuration file) and enter there:
Code:
[gps]
comport = 6
receiver = 0
receiver_status = 1
baudrate = 9600
(receiver --> 0 means without TMC)
I have taken this solution...
To hide or show the GPS connection in the connections panel
* The settings are at 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ControlPanel\GPS Settings'
* The 'Hide' DWORD value should be deleted to show the panel and 'x' to hide the panel
* The 'Group' DWORD value should be set to '2' to show the panel and deleted to hide the panel
For example, to show the GPS connection in the connectionss panel
* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ControlPanel\GPS Settings\Hide is deleted
* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ControlPanel\GPS Settings\Group = 2

To save these changes...
press the powerbotton for the suspendmode. Let the Wizzard sleeping for 10 sec., after make a reboot.
You will be able to choose a new "virt." com port, and this port is visible for all navigation softwares.
Due to long trying and experimenting with my bt gps i lost my shortcut of TT 5 on my today page. Is there anyone who can tell me how to put it back on, beaucouse when i want to start tt5 it's almost impossible to navigate the start menu with my fingertips.
I've allready tried to fix the problem with "settings/today/items", but Tomtom wasn't in the list anymore.
TT 5 starts perfectly from my startmenu, but i want my shortcut back.
Is there anyway who can tell me to solve this :?:
I've got a vario, and am currently running tomtom Nav5.21 on my ipaq, once i get hold of a bluetooth antenna, tomtom will be going on the vario.
This is not an uncommon problem with tomtom. There are however 2 ways arround your problem.
First way is to download the v5.21 patch from the tomtom website and re-install the .cab file, this will mean that tomtom is brought back to its origional settings. And the shortcut will re-appear on the screen.
If you have in any way customised the settings, you may have to set them up again (for example if you are familiar with tomtom, you'll have to turn off the guided tour stuff.) However things like any stored favorites or POI's will be unaffected by doing this, and will show up just like they did before.
The otherway is to go into start > settings > Personal > Buttons. From there you can re-assign one of the buttons to always start up tomtom, or indeed any application you want.
For example on my vario, button 5 is the Comm manager that allows me to turn on and off the wifi / bluetooth. As there is already a little icon at the bottom of the today screen that opens the comm manager I'll be reassigning the button to start TomTom.
In the TTN 5.1 update package are (if i remember correct) 3 cab files. One is just the Today plugin, you can tell it by its name
From TTN 5.21 onwards the plugin is IN the main cab, so you cant use this trick with that one.
the Todayplugin is the same for both versions
Alternatively you can use the HTCTODAY plugin i have modified (in 3 flavours) search on the forum.
Code:
use the HTCTODAY plugin
Searched for that, and this is the only post found.
Hello all,
I've just faced a strange problem.
The USB sync had always worked well, but once I applyed a few reg tweaks (shown on http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=WM5_Tweaks_Other) for WM5 and then ...
No more USB at all...No recognition, nothing
The only time the pc detected the phone was during a reset (a few seconds only)
I had even done a few shutdown/restart cycles still the same thing ... no USB at all.
So I did a rollback of the registry settings and ... my USB is back and working after a reset ...
Here are the settings I applied to the phone :
Disable 3gp (video) size limit
Add GPS settings icon
Add Lunar Calendar mode to Calendar
Disable charging over USB
Make WM5 ask where to install a program (1)
Make WM5 keep CAB files around after installing (1)
Show Wireless Today item
I'll try to sort out witch of them produced this problem and keep you posted.
Did anyone already met such a behaviour ?
Regards,
And the winner is ...
I sorted out the registry setting that locked out the USB
Add GPS settings icon
If you have a GPS device, you can add a GPS settings icon to your Start > Settings menu using:
HKLM\ControlPanel\GPS Settings\Group = 2 (DWORD decimal)
HKLM\ControlPanel\GPS Settings\redirect <-- delete, or rename, this value
Note that '2' stands for the Connections tab, '1' is System and '0' would be Personal
But it will become "active" after doing the following things :
set the GPS program port to COM8
set the GPS connection port to COM7
and tick the automatic GPS management (recommended)
and then do a full reboot ...
then
No more USB,
UPDATE
To solve it, you'll have to rollback the settings
set the GPS program port to None
set the GPS connection port to None
and tick the automatic GPS management (recommended)
, remove the registry (to avoid another time the problem)
and reboot
Regards,
Fx.
added a note to the wiki - weird, no idea why that would affect USB.. haven't read any other reports from people who have enabled that GPS icon either.
That said - I don't see what the point of the GPS applet is, especially for those who don't -have- a GPS device to be used with their Wizard %)
I just figured out that my External gps application doesn't save the settings i give it.
The best settings for the X1 are as i found here:
Programs tab:
GPS-hardwareport com4
Baudrate 115200
Is this right?
Only when i enter these and press ok, and return to check this, they are on the default settings
It worked perfectly until my last hard reset
anyone had the same problem?
Hello,
I am looking for an app to toggle my gps on/off. Can anyone help me with this?
I have the issue that when I have my phone in flight modus and am out of the country both GSM and GPS are disabled. I would like the GSM to be disabled in favor of GPS to be enabled. I wan't this option for my Tom Tom navigation when out of the country,so it does not get interrupted by phone calls or smsses.
Kind regards
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-gps-toggle.html
Im also looking for a simple on/off toggle button for the gps.
Since you can have that in android i figure it should exist something similar created for wm.
I have only found wm homescreen plugins so far but since thats no use when you running manila or CHT it not even worth downloading.
Looks like ill have to keep searching....

You're right.
I'll test it under pure WM and check the registry while toggling on opr off : maybe I'll be able to detect what keys to change to get the same results directly, and possibly make a CHT widget.
Edit :
Found this one here :
http://wiki.modaco.com/index.php/Samsung_i600
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\GPS Intermediate Driver]
"IsEnabled"=DWORD:00000001
-> change to 0 to toggle off ?
I'll check if it works... And if it actually saves battery life.
A Possible Work Around
I could not get the app from the link above to work on my HD2. It said it installed successfully, but I could find no exe or shortcut for it anywhere on my HD2. I searched a couple of app forums here and found nothing else.
Here is a possible solution although it is not a one-click solution like most toggles. It is based on this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=645916
Using a text editor, paste this into a new file:
30#ctlpnl.exe AGPSSettingsCPL.cpl - location services settings
Save the file with the name such as GPS Toggle.lnk (that's a small "L" in lnk).
Copy the shortcut file to the Windows/Start Menu/Programs folder. From there you can access it using the Start button/menu. Also, depending on the UI, you may be able to create a button on your main screen. I have Co0kie's Home Tab which provides the ability to create buttons on the home screen. (Co0kie's Home Tab has a number of toggle switches, but not one for GPS.)
This shortcut will bring up the Location screen from Settings. This may or may not be what you want. To be honest, I could not find a place that says "turn on/off GPS."
AGPS only allows to use available data network to update the satellites positions database in order to speed up satellites location.
It should have nothing to do with having the GPS receiver actually turned on or off...
In fact, it's turned off on my HD2, and I'm still able to use the GPS.
I'm currently trying to evaluate the effect the above registry value change has on battery lifetime...
Edit :
OK, at least your post put me on a track :
The registry tweak actually switches on or off the "Automatic GPS management" checkbox in the "Access" panel from the "External GPS" applet in WM "System" settings.
You can still use a shortcut as the one you posted, but it should contain 25#ctlpnl.exe cplmain.cpl,25,2 instead (GPS settings - Access).
Now the registry trick has strictly the same effect, and can be made out of a simple MortScript - then a CHT switch, too.
The only problem is I couldn't notice a better battery consumption, actually...
