No.
Having a 3G SIM in your Jamin will make no difference. It simply does not have the hardware needed for 3G network.
EDGE is 2.5G (works with regular SIM) and unless your network supports it, you can not use it.

All phone features working perfectly except for 3G. Smart carrier people cannot help. What could be wrong. Vendor says 3g works on 2100 band. Confusing statement. What can be done? Connects to umts but when video call is pressed will not connect.
Which carrier are you on again? Smart Carrier? .. From what I know no carriers in the US support video calling .. Also, Cingular is the only GSM carrier in the US with 3G which runs on the 1900Mhz band ..
also .. what does your phone display while connected "G" or "U" ... what are your phone band settings .. can you also goto dslreports.com/mspeed and see what speeds are you getting ..
According to GSM world SMART (a Philippine operator) uses UMTS 2100, which your TyTN does definitely support.
Have you checked if your SIM card is 3G-enabled? Most 3G networks require special USIMs for 3G usage.
I just learned, that Cingular uses UMTS 850 and 1900 to be exact. According to the American HTC website the Cingular 8525 supports "Tri-band UMTS/HSDPA high speed wireless data network support (2100MHz and 850/1900 MHz), Quad-band GSM®/GPRS/EDGE worldphone".
Does anyone know if there is a special hardware version, that supports UMTS850 & 1900 or will my European TyTN work on those networks, too?
TyTN is tri-band UMTS .. 850/1900/2100 .. so it should work on these networks without any issues ...
And my bad .. didnt realize that you are trying to use the TyTN in Phillipines ..
You should also check, if the called party has a 3G signal, while you call him. Further make sure video calls are activated by your network operator.
3g problems in the philippines
Everything you guys mentioned in order(am in a 3g area calling a 3g enabled party with a 3g sim card). Even the tech staff behind Smart Communications cannot make it work. Displays U and u. But video call cannot push thru even if pic on front camera shows. There is 1 thin line( or command?) stopping it from connecting. My last option is to borrow my friend's unit and see if her unit's 3g works here then it's my device that's a problem. Thnks for the input. Keep it coming.

Hi. I don't know how they did it but Smart Communications did it! Apparently and ironically their 3g sim card is not compatible with the htc tytn but their regular sim is. Thanks all.

Hi everyone. After my first thread i have finally got everything on my tytn working: 3g, mms, internet, phone. The problem was on the settings. Smart and Globe, the primary carriers in the Philippines can both work on the phone if the settings are right.

yes there is 3g and hsdpa along with gsm and gprs and wap in the philippines. and yes you can buy globe prepaid 3g sim card.

Here in the US I am using T-Mobile, wich doesn't have 3G yet. So, I probably don't have a 3G sim in my Hermes, and everywhere I go, I always get only a G next to my phone icon. However, when I went to Toronto, Canada, this past week, the G changed to a U. Does that mean:
1) UMTS network was detected, but all it did was detect it, and keep using GSM?
2) UMTS network was detected, and I was able to connect to it, because the 3G in a 3G sim cards is for internet access only,
3) the U is for internet connection availability only, and doesn't affect the cell voice phone part of my TyTN?
or
4) I somehow got a 3G compatible SIM card, and had I wanted to, could've been charged $10 every 8 to 10 seconds for downloading REALLY fast (I get charged $10US a meg if I use web outside of USA)

In order to have a 3G service you do NOT have ot have a 3G SIM (also known as USIM). The network is backward compatible and will allow you to use whatever your SIM card (or the network) authorized you.
I am also TMO subscriber and in some countries I could use UMTS and in others only 2.5G (GPRS/EDGE). Technically you have no limitations to do so so its up to the commercial arrangements between TMO USA and the other operators.
So the bottom line:
a. Your device detected UMTS and the network allowed your device to be attached to the 3G network (hence you saw the "U").
b. You probably have a SIM and not USIM (like you mentioned TMO still does not have 3G network ready for commercial use).
c. It is perfectly OK technically to connect to a 3G network even if you have 2.5G SIM card (pending you are authorized by the network to get such a service).
You can do a simple test next time you are in Toronto or other place where you see the "U". Go to www.dslreports.com, they have speed tools, try to perform a speed test and if you are connected with "U" you should get 3G speed results (again, depends on the network and the quality of the signal.. you will see a result of something between 200k to 300k i would guess)
PS: You are right about the cost per meg. But look at the 3G speed as you get what you want but just faster so the bottom line is - you are being charged the same as 2.5G just get work done sooner
My brother got the new Iphone and has now upgraded our phone service (we have same bill) to have unlimited Edge service. Does GPRS use a different type of network than EDGE or can I use the EDGE network but not get the speed becuase of the hardware capability? And if I do connect to GPRS will I get billed differently?

phones and sims are normaly backward compatible as
if they got out of edge or 3g covering they would be useless
but not forward comaptible so if a 2g use a 2.5g sim it's at 2g speed
Just picked up a Hermes 8525 off of ebay.
While upgrading to the latest WM 6.1 roms available - I have been picking up the 3G network in my area here in Montreal.
I do not have a 3G sim card, and do not plan on using any of the data features either. I pretty much just use it as a regular phone - surf via wifi. Am I actually on the 3G network ??
I also do not have a 3G plan with Rogers. Is there any benefit to 3G if just being used as a regular wireless phone ??
If not being used for any data features, etc - will there be an additional charge applied ??
Should I just force the phone to GSM network only - instead of auto ??

3G is data and voice. So, even if your not using the data plan your voice connection still auto connects to 3G network or Edge.
You wouldnt get charge for data as long as your 3G data connection is disabled.
You could force it to use a specific band (i.e. 850/1900 mhz) but you might have a bad connection on some areas since the phone auto connects to stronger signal. Hence better (sometimes) voice quality.

The 'phone must be hardware equipped with 3G.
The SIM then provides the 3G software functionality if the service provider has that equipment installed in its cells-and not all do (esp. the 'budget SPs)

I know the non 3G phone wont have 3G speeds. I just don't want to have to get another sim card when I switch phones. One is 3G and the other is not.

should be compatible unless the Razr locked to a certain telco.
3g work depends in network and celphone not in simcard.
I am using my 4year old postpaid simcard from my himalaya to non-wm 3g phone, works fine.
My new simcard(3g printed on card) works with my himalaya(non-3g)
3G sim cards direct the phone to access the 3G network (UMTS) if the phone is so equipped with 3G compatibility. If a 3G sim card is placed in a 2G (GSM/GPRS) phone it simply provides the phone with the 2G network. There is no need for different SIM cards.
Conversely, a 2G SIM in a 3G phone can only provide the 2G network access so if you are after something like Streaming Video and you have a 2G SIM, this would be your problem
* Service issue hint. If your service went "bye-bye" after you bought a 3G phone it could be because you are on a fringe 3G area and the phone defaults to 3G network even if there is a strong 2G signal in the area. A workaround for this is to hunt up an old Cingular 64k 2G SIM that has not been used on Ebay or someplace like that and use it in your phone. You will lose the 3G network access but will have your old 2G network access again.
** The exception to the rule would be certain older model Nokia phones that show a phone restriction upon placing the 3g SIM in the phone (No, entering a restriction code does not clear the restriction)
