How to Install .cab files with pgms - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

I don't mean to ask silly questions, but I can't seem to manage a simple installation. I download the "WM VI Black Cyberon Voice Dial" cab and would like to install it, but have no idea where to begin!!! Could someone please help me with some step-by-steps? I would like to try this out instead of the MS Voice Commander. I also downloaded the "WM VI Black Cyberon Voice Commander" just in case, and would love to find out what works best on my Hermes. I would appreciate any help that may come my way.
:-D

save it on your storage card and run it from the file explorer on the phone.....?

What to run . . .
Do I "execute" the _setup.xml file? Will that copy everything needed to everyplace required?

Execute the xml file? What have you done to the file already?
Copy the complete cab file (don't try and extract anything) onto your phone. Then (through file explorer) double click or run the cab. The XML file etc should all be within the cab and you should not even need to know about it. The cab should run on your phone as it is.

Difference from .exe installation and .cab ...

Hi guys,
I think I don't understand the difference between the desktop (.exe) installation and the .cab installation for a ppc programs....
Is there a possibility to install the program in a dir. of the SD? For example, I'd like to create a dir called "Program files" in the SD.
P.S: How can I change the default location for programs installation from device memeory to SD?
Use cabinst (search on google) to install cabs from PPC to different folders - essential tool!
You need registry tweaks to change the default folder, although this isn't really advisable. See Tweaks2k (i think) for this. But with cabinst, not required!
V
Thanks!
If I understand well... I have to install at first cabinstl on my Jam and after that I must use .cab installation!!? (I have to copy cab file in to particolar path of SD or?)
Using .exe install is not possible?
The .exes you download from sites wil (almost always) be for installation on the PC. You double click that, that'll load up activesync and install that way.
The other way is to copy the .cab to your pocketpc and double click. That will install, but gives little control over custom folders to install to and will also delete the .cab after install.
However, after installing cabinst you can double click on .cabs on the PPC and install anywhere.
V
Yeah! With cabinst I can instll app on my own "Program Files" dir in SD...
That's nice but I can't find all the app I have to install in CAB format so... my question is if is there any method to put the files on a specific dir from .exe installation..
Many thanks guys!
if you've got the .exe for the pc, double click it WITHOUT your pda connected. Activesync will load up and you'll get the Add/remove programs screen, saying the program will be installed next time you connect your pda.
Then, on your pc, you have to hunt around for the cab.
I use a program called filetracer to find files, but generally try looking in (I think, I'm not in front of my pc right now) C:\program files\Microsoft active sync\ (or something like that). There you should find folders, eg
\spb\Weather Panel (that's not a real example!).
Dig through there, and you should find eg
Arm_VJStuff.cab.
This is the file you need.
Sometimes you'll get a bunch of numbered files. eg If you see one like
2577_vjstuff.cab amongst other numbered files, the 2577 is the one you want (2577 refers to ARM, the chip in your PDA).
Copy that cab file to your desktop or wherever you want to store it, and copy a copy to your PDA. When you connect up your PDA activesync will ask if you want to install the installation you aborted earlier. Just cancel it.
From there, just install on your PDA with cabinst!
Sounds complicated, but you'll get the hang of it very quickly!
I keep all of my cabs in a folder for installation from hardreset very quickly.
V
Sounds good!!!
Thanks!

Voice on TOMTOM 5.1

I got everything working....except the voices....
Help help help help
Luis
thnaks for all help
I think you might be having the same problem i did for a while. I knocked up a seperate voice installer to put the voice files in the right place. feel free to give it a go.
helo . is this the portuguese voice ?
'fraid not, it's the english one.
I dont now how to do a ´cab ....can you do for all of us Portuguese guys..??
You can edit his file with wince cab manager! and drag the voice files you want installed in this cab
Ok.. but where i put this cabs ???
In the CAB files, you'll have a file called dataXX.CHK. Put that file in this folder on your device:
Code:
\TomTom\TomTom
for version 5.10, it has to be under that full path.
for version 5.00, it has to be under \TomTom.
I believe it's a typo in their software, but that's the only way I got any of the voices to work.
Just create a folder called TomTom on the root of your device, then create another folder under it also called TomTom. Finally, copy your CHK file into that folder. You can also copy the dataXX.BMP and dataXX.VIF files into that folder, but that's optional.
That's it!
Strange...i belive that i need a folder voices....
1. download wince cab manager
2. open voice**.cab with wince cab manager
3. open files in this voice cab
4. extract data**.chk out of the cab, by dragging it to a new folder
5. determine which *.vif file (also in the folder voice on your cd) is linked to your voice**.cab (in your case porf.vif (female) and porm.vif (male))
6. rename the porf.vif or porm.vif file to data**.vif (** is the number of the voice file) and copy he file to your new folder
7. open tintoy.cab
8. open files in this cab
9. drag data**.chk and data**.vif into this cab
10. save tintoy's cab file
11. execute this file in your pda
you can also make a folder voices and put the chk and vif file in there
\voices in the root of the device

OmapClock - Skype Overclocking shortcut creation ?

Hello,
I know there are some threads talking about this already however they're very confusing to me and to a lot of people.
I have Total Commander installed and I would like to know exactly how to make a shortcut for skype and tell m it to overclock to 240Mhz when skype opens.
I have tried some methods but never get it working.
Could someone really give a detailled step by step on how to do this please.
Thank you
Ok I will try to make this easy
1. place omapclock.exe in device \program files\
2. use template provided which is a lnk file
3. change the lnk name to what ever suits I.e. skype omap
4. With total commander or gsfinder etc change properties\shortcut just replace * by name of program
N.B. (The lnk file is placed in windows\start menu\programs where there are lnk (link) files to all your other programs.
Rename the file using a file explorer to Say 'Skype omap.lnk' and place it in above folder
With the file explorer (you need total commander or gsfinder or resco etc...) you can change properties of lnk file file\properties\shortcut and edit the location.)
and that's it should work. all of syntax is correct cuz this is what I use
Hey,
Thank you so much for your prompt response ! It's working perfectly !!!
Great help !
Nice and easy to follow !!!
Thank you again !
I don't get it...this is a zip file? Do you have to open it on the PDA or what?
yes its a zip file open on your pda - cant post lnk file needed to be zipped

How do I change welcomehead.96.png?

I'm writing a little tool to restore my settings after a hard reset.
One of the problems I've run into is that I can't "overwrite" the splash screen image in the windows folder.
I'm using visual basic and the "file.copy" command.
Does anyone know how to overwrite this file (and probably also other files in "rom")? Would an api function to copy the file work better?
Total Commander, and MortScript, succeeds in copying another file to \windows\welcomehead.96.png, so there must be a way

Let me give you some hints:
1. You must edit ROM to change files.
2. Please go to URL

OK. I'll Rephrase my question:
I want to write a program to copy the file:
\storage card\welcomehead.96.png
to:
\windows\welcomehead.96.png
on a WM5 device. I'm not interested in editing the rom.
I know it's possible to write a program that can copy the file, since both total commander for PPC can do it and MortScript can do it.
It does not work when using "file.copy" in visual basic. So i'm asking if anyone knows if there's an API function I can use to do it, or if there is some other way to do it.
"Cooking a new rom" is not an option for me. Because:
I want to be able to use whatever rom i want, and I am making a tool which i can run to do the following after a hard reset (or rom upgrade):
- copy files (typically shortcuts to progs intalled on the storage card, files in my documents etc.) from the storage card to the device
- set registry entries the way I want them
- install the cab files I want "automatically"
I've got it all sorted, except that it bombs when i try to copy the file "welcomehead.96.png" to the windows folder.

You just have to overwrite the existing file...
1. Open the file
2. Write data
3. Close

issues installing S2U2

Okay it says its a cab. While I am very new to wm phones I have been able to install a ton of other cabs.
When I go to install this fist off it doesnt look like a cab it has the name and the windows flag and .rar as the extension.
When I click on it I get the following.
There is no application associated with "s2u2-0.3-WM5". Run the application first, then open this file within the application.
This is supposed to work with WM6 and I know others here have done it. I am just not so bright when it comes to this and cannot figure out what I am doing wrong. I tried just copying it into the windows folder but that didnt work either.
You have to extract the rar file to get the cab file inside for installation. Pls try again.
thanks
thanks mate works like a charm
