Actual website view? - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

Hi guys,
I have an XDA Mini S and wondering if it's possible to view websites how they are viewed in PC browsers. Not condensed but scaled to fit, with small font.
Is this possible?

deepfish does this..

That's just what I need but I don't have an activation code and they aren't accepting new signups.

Picsel Browser does this, I think its freeware, if so.

If not...

That's perfect, thanks.

Emulation of iPhone Browser? Why not?

This question always crossed my mind, how come nobody has emulated the iPhone web browser? I've tried IE, Opera, and the mobile Firefox but they're all junk compared to the mobile Safari - mainly because of the finger movements that make it super easy to navigate. This is really the only advantage other than GUI "swiftness" the iPhone has.
Please discuss, and if your response is "why dunt u buy an itele lolz", you totally missed the point.
you have to try picsel browser, some ppl say its better than safari,
and about opera, if you tried opera mobile you have the wrong version because opera mini is the one you want to have. It is not very finger friendly but it is very fast and also very good to use with d-pad
cheers
well i only use opera mobile mini is not really my cop of tea
Look at skyfire.com. It's not out yet, but seems promising!

Yes it does, nice demo.
Thanks, SkyFire looks very nice! I'm using Opera atm because it's the only half-decent browser I've found - however the zoom features suck because it can't render text correctly and you can't browse as swiftly compared to Safari. However SkyFire is very interesting, I'll be looking into this further.
Cheers
Saw in the Hermes thread that the WM6.1 PIE has an option that allows you to view the entire webpage then tap to zoom in on a certain portion of it. Sound familiar?
Wonder whatever happened to M$ deepfish browser? I wasn't one of the lucky ones who got on the beta test list. And I don't see anything new posted on the project website.
Is there any way to fool PIE into telling a site that it is an iPhone??
I know it's possible to get PIE to broadcast that it is a desktop, so why not an iPhone??

Yes, it is proxy-based . However, it is the best browser Ive seen for a mobile device to-date. They have a video on YouTube & it looks very promising. Definitely better than Safari because it not only supports AJAX, but full FLASH 8 & 9 as well. If you access ESPN.com, you can actually see the video's of the highlights to the right of the page just like you would on a regular desktop.

Well... Opera Mobile 9.5 will be released in a week or so. It's much better than Safari
Pisel would be just as good as safari - correction, better - if it supported flash. My only two gripes with picsel is the inability to view flash, and not being able to set it as my default browser. Its fast, the nearly-limitless zooming beats the pants off of anything available now or in near future. If I'm not planning to edit them, i open my text files with it too.
Before we get Opera 9.5, the top two browsers in terms of speed are Netfront 3.5 followed by Opera Mini 4.
Netfront is way better than Picsel browser. Picsel is slooooww. It also have memory full problem, on top of other bugs.
I hve done some bencemark between all these browser in the Athena forum, if you're interested.
i been playing around with netfront... and im very impressed... its prob the fastest browser per load time... and its browsing is very nice allowing finger movements... also double tap on screen to zoom out of the page
which in turn opens up a window and allows u to use a nav box to scroll along the bigger portions of the page... i highly recommend for people to try it out ....
Edit: Netfront also has full ajax2.0 support

Picsel Browser
hey wuub:
My picsel browser just seems slow all of the time. I've had a lot better luck with PIE on speed.
I used picsel for a while, until i found opera mini 4. It is much faster than picsel. It keeps your page in the desktop-like layout, but also formats the text so that it is readable (without having to pan around) when zommed in.
opera mini 4 is my suggestion, with esmertec jbed as your midlet manager
Hey Sturatt:
thnx for the info. Does Opera mini work well on the ppc's? I was looking at Opera's website & it looked like Opera Mobile was more for wm6 (but costs money) & Opera mini was more for the smartphones (and was free). PIE just doesn't do well for me but picsel really seems slow compared to PIE.
i have a mogul (ppc6800) and opera mini works great.
just install jbed, then go to www.operamini.com on your phone's IE, navigate to the opera mini 4 page and download (by default it goes to opera mini 3, you have to select a link to get to opera mini 4).

Yes, Picsel IS slow - and has tons of other problems (low Web standards compliance, for example). I don't really recommend it. Opera Mini 4 is far better - in my opinion, of course.

Best Browser?

Hi,
what you guys this is the best web browser for HTC Touch?
I think the Picsel Browser is very good.
Pls. tell us your best browser.
Thanks!
I've been using Opera.
I think opera mini right now but I think skynet or opera mobile 9 soon will be in the coming months. Both promising full browsing and skynet will be free
I think you mean skyfire browser.
Can some one tell me the difference between:
Picsel and Opera?

Yeah, no Skynet browser please. We turn over control of our web browsing to them and before you know it they'll be self aware and launching our nukes against us. Judgment day. Then they'll activate Arnold to come back in time and kill you, because you are the future leader of mankind.
Ahhh, which browser
I actually like all of them IE, Opera, NetFront...
I have found that depending on the particular website, one will work better than the other. IE works just fine for a lot of websites and has the best compatibility. Opera is great for certain websites that IE just can't display properly. NetFront works best on (poorly written) websites that have too many damn frames and cutsie html features that only impress the person who made the website. The beauty is you can install and use more than one browser to make sure you get into the websites you need. (iPhone can't do that...) I, btw, need to link into my work with Citrix and the Touch is the only phone I know that can do it. I am the envy of my colleagues at work!

Have you checked out the video preview of Opera Mobile 9.5. It looks great and the notes says it supports flash, unfortunately they didn't demo that in the video.

Incidentally, I just loaded No2Chem's WM6.1clean ROM and IE seems to do everything better and faster.

Web Browsing with Opera on the Athena

I received my new x7501 a couple of days ago. I am disappointed with the web browsing experience using Opera Mobile.
I've been using Opera on my Kaiser and it works differently. On the Kaiser, I use both Opera Mobile 8.65, and Opera Mini 4. If I could copy text and if it were tabbed for multiple pages, I would only use Opera Mini 4.
On the QVGA screen of the Kaiser, Opera Mini does a great job of taking a web page that has multiple columns of text, and rendering the columns in a width that fits the screen width of the Kaiser. The worst thing, in my opinion, is having to scroll horizontally to read text.
On the Kaiser, in Opera Mobile, sometimes horizontal scrolling is necessary. On the Athena, in Opera Mobile, it seems like horizontal scrolling is always necessary. I've tried different settings and different orientations. I've tried RealVGA with different DPI resolutions. The text always seems to be too wide.
When I use the Opera Mobile setting of Display in One Column, it only uses half of the width of the screen. It is as if Opera Mobile is unaware of the larger, wider screen of the Athena, and thinks it only has QVGA to render the column.
On my Athena, using Opera Mobile, the font sizes are wierd, sometimes extremely big while other text is very small. It doesn't do this on the Kaiser. It depends on the web site, and how the page is designed, but on the Kaiser in Mini and Mobile, the fonts and the text columns seem to render better than on the Athena.
I like the large fonts and large icons of the standard display, running without RealVGA or similar utilities, because it enables me to use the touch screen without a stylus. I've tried RealVGA 1.1 and MvRTrueVAG, and there are several rendering defects that I don't like.
I realise that with time and effort, I may be able to play with the settings and find a combination that works for me. I'm hoping that I'll get feedback to this posting that will help me find better settings. I'm wondering if I should just install the Black Dual PK 3.0 ROM and see how well things render in it.
Having a good web browsing experience is my main objective.
Thanks, Bren
You can try new NetFront 3.5 concept or Opera 9.xx on the athena - they are best for now
Thanks for the suggestion. I had found the earlier post about browsers, and found the link to NetFront.
I'm still getting familiar with it. I like that I can toggle between scrolling or selecting text to copy.
I'm trying to figure out how to choose a different font. It wants to display everything in Courier monotype.
Anyway, so far, I'm encouraged that I've found a browser that is improving my browsing experience with my new machine.

Netfront 3.5 is the best at this moment, IMHO. To change font, just do to menu/tools/browser setting and press the font button. Also, while you're there, you might want to blank out the Use Visual Bookmark option to use the classical bookmark.
One other very nice feature is you can define a few view setting (controls the browsing mode and display mode) that you could tie to each website so that you have complete control over how you want a specific website to be displayed.
This thread contains lots of comparison between Opera 9.33 versus Netfront 3.5.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=368881. I suggest that we move over to that thread for future discussion.
Thanks for the how to and the link to the comparison. NetForge is very good. I'm resolving some of the cognitive dissonance and buyers remorse that comes for me in this phase of new technology purchases.
NetForge is still in development, and it does have a few missing pieces and rough edges. I encounterd a bug cutting and pasting. When I cut, tt puts more text on the clipboard than is selected. Not a big deal, but I do a lot of cutting and pasting. I cut from a French newspaper, and paste into Google Translate.
There's a lot of development going on NetForge is in Beta, Opera is in development, WM7 is on it's way. I wonder how PIE will be in WM7.

Strange, I could cut and paste in Netfront without problem.
Yes, there is lots of things on the way, thanks for the open SDK on Win CE. As for PIE, I'm not optimistic that it will be as good, if PIE 6.1 is any indication to go by. I hope Safari will one day be avaialable on the Win Mobile platform like it is on the window desktop now. On the desktop Safari seems even faster than Opera 9.5.

Opera Mobile: tweaks needed

Opera Mobile is a great browser, but I don't think it does so well on the X1.
In landscape mode, the software keyboard should be completely disabled. This would be much less annoying and would also allow interaction with embedded Flash / Flash websites.
Opera also often makes the L and R buttons activate the start menu, rather than their assignments.
EDIT: And if you're typing into Opera's own search box with the hardware keyboard, it doesn't recognise that you are typing and times out - taking the search dialogue away.
Does anyone know if these things can be fixed? I wouldn't mind disabling the keyboard in landscape mode at the OS level (to affect everything), but it's too useful in portrait to disable altogether.
Thanks
Yes i agree about the software keyboard. That is the most annoying thing on the planet it comes up even when ur not in a text input area. I would love to see a tweak to stop this.
"Disabling" the on screen keyboard...
Try this SIP.
It is an onscreenkeyboard but in fact it displays NO keyboard.
You can change it back to a "normal" keyboard via the normal SIP menĂ¼ in the bottom middle of the screen.
Better than nothing, I guess..
Greets !
PS: I found this cab in an Opera 9.5 thread around here.
there is a registry tweak somewhere on here, ill try search for it now
Has anyone noticed that the opera that comes on the xperia only lets you go to mobile sites no matter what the setting in the settings tab indicates?
that not opera but the websites you are visiting.
I don't think so because these webpages have full verisons and its determined by the browser u are using. For instance if i switch to the build from the touch hd i can go to the same webpages and view them as full pages but the one on the xperia will automatically go to the mobile versions. I started up a new thread to discuss this

The webpage you visit is informed of the user agent. Most websites use useragent checks to determine which version to show you. I should know I design websites.
Most likely (but unconfirmed without a test) is that the Xperia build has "Sony Ericsson" in it useragent.
I had the same problem, i was trying to view the full desktop version of youtube.com but it kept redeirecting me to the mobile version, even when i clicked the link at the bottom of the mobile site that said 'View desktop version'. I tried everything to stop it from happening i.e changing user agent settings in registry and opera, but it kept on occuring.
For a reason not connected with my problem I got a new Xperia X1 and now I dont have that problem anymore!

He is right. Go to a site like IPChicken.com and look at the Browser string under the 'Advanced' section and you'll see what Opera is reporting to each site you visit. Opera has a way to 'spoof' the User Agent to be like Firefox or IE 6 for example. Type in: about:config in the address bar, and scroll all the way down to User Agent and try 2 and 3 (Firefox & IE, respectively).

Zooming with the dpad is what I miss most from my touch pro. It's scroll wheel works very well for dynamic zoom but it would be nice to try something similar with the xperia optical stick.
one thing that i would like to change in opera is that new tabs open up in the background, is there a way to do this?

are you surfing over Wifi or your mobile networks connect. Website use a series of tricks to workout which version of their site they think is best for your device.
Almost all of these sites however should provide a link which allows you to visit the full site, which you may need to bookmark to aviod repeating the steps each time.

i'm surfing over my provider's network. this wasn't an issue when i was using the non-bundled version of opera. most of the websites i have gone to either don't do browser sniffing or have used the user agent rather which has meant that i've been browsing the full sites.
since switching to the bundled version of opera i'm not constantly getting the mobile versions ...

It's not as convenient as on the Diamond/Touch Pro, but does the trick.
