New upgrade to edge? - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

So I read somewhere online that Ericsson will upgrade existing edge technology to reach speeds of 1Mbit/sec. But will be available in 2009. Does this mean that it is only a software update for the htc wizard to get this speed without any hardware changes? Sucks its 2 years away though. 3G will be widely available at that time. what use would that new edge technology be for? wish they could have thought of this 2 years ago.

Don't crosspost please.

someone wants to be a mod bad!!!!!! lol jk

T-Mobile to have 3G by Summer

Well, according to Boy Genius Report T-mobile will be rolling out their 3G network by summer 2008 which is long overdue. What I'm curious about is how this will affect current users and rates. Will I have to buy a new phone or will my wing be able to use the new 3G network? Will the data rates go up or change from unlimited? Anybody heard any information on this?
Their 3G system is still GSM compatible, so having a wing is still ok. But that means they will have to release their 3G phone (a.k.a. Kaiser from what my sources tell me.)
As far as rates go: I dunno.
I'll just be glad when they stop messing around with the towers and service here.
will this affect the sucky EDGE??...
will they finish before AT&T?!
will it mean more stability in the connections??
will living near an airport mean you'll still get knocked off when a plane flies overhead??
who knows!.. but we will definitely find out sooner or later, right?

Awesome! Hopefully I'll be able to stream some decent videos and data on my wing once 3G comes around! Edge sucks when it comes to that. Appriciate the info!
But I thought the Wing is not 3G capable.
it would only make sense that the 2g network and equipment will still work until everyone has slowly migrated over to the new 3g network and the first phones would work on both networks.

I wanted the Tilt so damn bad I was almost willing to switch providers, but when I found out I could get a Wing for 79 bucks I stuck with T-Mo, thinking I'd wait ANOTHER year for them to roll out 3g. I would just have to buy a Kaiser if they came out with one that wasn't hobbled. (Can't someone put a 624mhz processor, and a decent amount of RAM in one of these? Is that too much to ask?)
Ya' know, maybe I should rethink that. I used a Psion 5 for years before switching to an iPAQ 2215, then a 2755-- all the while thinking: "Man, if I could get a keyboard, phone and Pocket PC rolled into one, that would be the best!"
I've had a Wing for a couple of months and I don't honestly recall one time that I've used the keyboard. Of course, it's keyboard is a piece of junk compared to the Psion 5's, but using the iPAQ's for so long conditioned me into a stylus typist.
I really have high hopes for Firefox portable on 3g though. This summer?--- well, I guess we've all heard that before!
I have heard different things, i surfed the net and these forums and i still get different things. all i wanna know is, is the wing compatible with the new 3G network coming out this summer?
No.
it will connect to the available compatible frequency. The expected 3/3.5G network will operate at a different frequency that the wing's radio doesn't connect to.
unless the newer radio roms somehow added that connection to that frequency... then no.

By the time T-mobile has their 3/3.5G..3.5+??.. network up and running smoothly.. HTC might well have a better and much sexier phone than the TyTn II....and from what I could tell the MDA Vario III is higher model of it than the original :O..unlike the Tilt which is a lower model but has this 1 advantage over it's big brother.. hope T-Mobile doesnt water down the Vario III before it gets over here, or should I say if?...and a maybe $300-$500 price tag for Vario III(via upgrade or contract and if they wait long enough it might be running a stock full, stable WinMobile 6.1 rather than buggy leaked one)versus $800+ for Kaiser? not to mention the still unsolved video drivers travesty with it :'(... new Touch Cruise and the P6500(Sedna) are pretty freaking sweet even compared to HTC's flagship TyTn II.
I actually love my phone enough that I might wait till next year for a phone with stock WinMobile 7 and all the freaky powers, motion sensor technology, and processors that phones running it are going to need. Those r going to make my Wing look like Razr! :'( I'll miss you Wing...btw, the TyTn II/Kaiser won't be able to run a lot of the previewed Windows Mobile 7 features either.
T-Mobiles 3G is slated to be substantially faster than AT&T's.
No one knows for sure if current 3G phones will work, but I have a Hermes and I'm being locked out of my internet in South Florida due to 3G testing, so i'm assuming it will work when it's released since I'm hitting a firewall right now.
A t-mobile rep on that board said they are going to have new pricing, so it's most likely going to be more expensive.
Questions...
I wonder if the prices for the unlimited data plans will change for people who are already in contracts. I'm paying an extra $19.99/month for the Total Internet add-on right now. Guess I'll just have to wait and see...
The Wing has 3G just not the one that we think is compatible to the new network right?

I'm hearing mixed things from everyone. I hope the wing will work but no one knows for sure.

Future of US T-Mobile WM phones

My guess is that since the US T-Mobile 3G is using an off the wall frequency than the rest of the world's 3G, our future phones will be severly limited if you want 3G. What are your thoughts?
yeah when i read that i was like wtf...
unless they come up with some new phones that do support 3g, i think tmo might have dealt it's wm program a death blow
It's a bummer...they need to come up with a much better 3G plan for existing phones or they will jump ship!
does anyone no about any official release dates for 3g or better phones

T-mobile 3G Launch and The T-Mobile Wing

Whhhey first post lol!
I was curious (for wing users) as we all know that Tmobile has already launched it's 3G already maining because of the upcoming release of the G1. But does anyone have any idea IF we were to be upgraded also would there be something that we'd have to exchange on the phone or would this be some kind of firmware release. I hope it's a firmware or something because I would love to have 3G on my phone. Seeing the fact the we have the most expensive phone from Tmobile (Currently)... why shouldn't we.
I've heard that the performance in certain areas will still be lacky... but I still want to at least know that I have the option because I REEAAALLLY don't care for the look of the G1... just not my cup of tea lol. It's too obviously a copy of the Iphone. I was glad to get my Wing because it looks different... don't get me wrong... the memory is a pain sometimes but I rather has a rare-ish phone than seeing ever ****, tom and harry out with the same phone saying "Yo I have one too, bro! lol"
The G1 looks nearly exactly like the Wing.
The Wing will never have 3G. It just lacks the hardware.
I really am thinking about getting the G1 and still keep my wing for flashing and testing!
thats what im going to do.. I have two wings so i might sell one of them.. I already ordered the G1.. So im excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I want the HTC HD... *saluvating*
I actually decided to order it today lol... I know, I know... I said I didn't like it before but it's still a bit of a step up from my wing. I'll use both. My wing is already unlocked so I don't want to lose a phone with that type of flexability. Plus the wing it actually quite cool to be honest... does what it's supposed to. But yeah.... I'm getting one too!!!!! yes!!
who is excited for wm on the g1? after someone hacks it to run windows mobile i will get one. i am due for a phone upgrade from tmobile anyway.

isn't the wing just a herald mobile 6? i thought other carriers used the same phone, renamed, rebadged and added diferent covers for it and they are 3g capable so why wouldn't are be 3g capable????
I would like to know the answer to this question as well. Did HTC remove specific hardware from the T-Mobile version to make it lack 3G capability? That would be truly disappointing.

The Herald/Atlas/Wing was released before 3G was widely available. T-Mobile just began rolling out 3G in October of last year. The Herald doesn't have a 3G radio therefore no 3G. Its not a matter of software.

[tracking] Nexus 1.5 (3G bands 1, 2, 5)

So apparently Google is coming out with a N1.5 with 3G Band I (2100Mhz), II (1900Mz) and V (850Mhz), versus the N1 Bands I (2100Mhz), IV (1700Mhz) and VIII (900Mhz).
I do not understand why Google's flagship HTC handset doesn't support every frequency and they (whomever "they" may be) simply enable/disable in software?!
Anyway, I guess this means N1.5 will work on AT&T 3G.
Any insider tracking the Google release date for the AT&T capable Nexus?
Care to share an actual source?
Refering to this i assume.

I was told by my AT&T representative for the SE region of RS that the phone is ready and is being tested to meet AT&T specs for speed on not only 3G but the upgraded HSPA networks. They however did not specify a date other than 2010 for the AT&T version. Soooo.... we shall see, normally they are right with the products coming to the market, like the Moto backflip which I knew personally was going to AT&T over a year ago.

But AT&T being the best service in my area I can't wait for this!

There is no chipset/antenna design that supports all UMTS bands at the same time. The bgr was just wrong, there are two distinct bb9700: one for t-mobile and one for att.

Yeah, that is a sad excuse of an Android phone. ATT is going the way of the big V. No open access to an open source project.
Just stupid if you ask me.

I wonder what they are going to do to the nexus..remove the unlockable bootloader perhaps? I also wonder if Verizon is going to do the same...
Being on ATT with a nexus one, I really do want to be excited by this news as I am tired of being on edge (thankfully I have wifi available most of the time), but I am concerned about the lengths ATT will go to after seeing what they pulled with the backflip.
I will just sit and wait and watch. Worst case scenario, my cell contract will run dry next year and if ATT buggers up the nexus I can always migrate to TMO with a new contract...best case scenario...I can sell my current nexus to offset the cost of a new one that will take advantage of ATT's 3g...hopefully by then all those dreaded iphones will have moved on reducing the dropped call rate and slow 3g found in my area (seattle).
Two changes needed to support different 3G bands:
1. Antenna
2. Baseband firmware

is LTE Advanced possible on the Verizon Galaxy Note 3

I have a Verizon Galaxy Note 3 with the latest update in Hardware from Verizon couple months ago they rolled out lte-advanced not to be confused with AWS 3G or 4G LTE I have seen on the internet on a few websites that it will be supported but I'm not 100% sure
my question is will my Verizon Galaxy Note 3 support / work with the new lte-advanced network ?
My second question is if I can do what I'm trying to do how do I go about making it work ?
Just recently I spoke with Verizon Customer Service about possibly changing my grandfathered unlimited plan. I was told because my wife and I are heavy data users, we would be better off staying with the old unlimited plan because after 22gb of data use on each phone, it would most likely be throttled back to 3g speeds. I was told however that Verizon is testing 5g speeds in a limited amount of markets and plan on rolling it out to more areas by the end of this year. The 22gb throttling would then be from 5g to 4g which would be much better than being throttled from 4g to 3 g. I was told that once this happens, it may make some sense to ditch the old unlimited data plan. Another thing I was told was that only the newer phones such as the Galaxy S8 would be able to take advantage of the 5g technology.
I am assuming this is what you are talking about. So no, our Note 3's will probably be incompatible with the faster data speeds unless there is a way to update the hardware. Nothing specific was said about which other newer phones would be able to take advantage of the newer technology.

You only get throttled to 3G during times of high congestion on the tower you are 'hooked' to. Old unlimited plan users in the top 5% get throttled the same. Since most who held onto their old unlimited data plan were heavy data users, I suspect most of us were in the top 5% anyway.
I switched from the old unlimited to the new unlimited, now can use my phone in Canada for phone, data and text... And saved $10/month over my prior bill.
Sent from my SM-N900V using Tapatalk
I believe the throttling on the old unlimited plan comes after 100gb of data is consumed on a phone during the billing cycle. We have both been under that and havent even come close. But we still both use at least double of the new data plan 22gb throttle threshhold. The Canada and Mexico capabilities on new plan are also a non issue because neither of us travel there. I have the unfortunate situation of living in a large metro area with lots of customers. It was explained by the customer service rep that because of this, congestion was all but guaranteed so I could pretty much expect to be throttled. Because of this, I can't take a gamble on whether or not it would happen. 3g would be very frustrating to deal with. For me though, I will have to admit it wouldn't be much of a problem as I am home most of the time and can utilize the home wifi. My wife though is out of our home quite often and is not able to utilize a reliable wifi network with any real regularity. So for us, the old unlimited is the best choice for now. Once the 5g is rolled out and we would only be throttled back to 4g, I will consider switching as 4g would still be only a slight annoyance.
I can only tell you what Verizon told me and what my initial contract told me when I signed up for unlimited data back in 2008 (I believe) and there was no set point (like 100GB) that kicked off throttling, it was ".. the top 5% data users..." will be throttled.
However, for me, the most data I ever used in a single month was about 20GB. So when this new unlimited plan came out, for ME, it was a no brainer...cost less and added Canada, where my son lives.
Obviously, your mileage varies and for you..the old unlimited sounds better.

What does "with the latest update in Hardware" mean?
I looked in /efs - based on my own handset I'm thinking you can estimate the time factory testing was performed with the timestamp on
/efs/FactoryApp/test_nv or
/efs/FactoryApp/baro_delta
(Mine is November 2013)
I vaguely remember seeing a "Hardware Version" descriptor in Settings->About device somewhere (a long time ago), but it's not in my current ROM.

If you read the article I pointed you to, you would have read that the Note 3 under test had *both* hardware and software modifications done to it. In particular, it required a new moden chip.
Lte-advanced is not dependent on the band but rather the bandwidth used. Again, read the article and the links in the article that describe the method used.
