I used to use Monilink a lot on my old Nokia. It is a Java app which you use to manage your bank account, it comes direct from your bank.
Anyone managed to use it under Android? I can't even get the wap push message to arrive when I register. I think it is arriving but the phone is ignoring it because when I put my sim in a different phone the message arrives every time!
doesn't work.
use the text message service from your bank.
There's a new version of the software coming out 1st weekend of December which will work with newer touchscreen phones, but still nothing for android or windows mobile yet.
the download link is just wap.monilink.co.uk/download.wml
i'd stick with the text alerts.

Wow, I didn't think anyone used MoniLink anymore! I was on the testing team for the bank when it was first launched, it never seemed to take off.
rhedgehog is right, looks like it will be coming out shotly, its just in testing, but this is not for Android / WM, they are not looking at this yet.
I used to find it quite good for quickly checking balances etc. Have to investigate the sms option to see if you can just send a text and they reply with balance etc. Perhaps before long the banks will make a version of internet banking with formatting for iphone/android etc as the full blown sites are rather clunky and slow when on the mobile.
Yes, you can. Each bank has a slightly different number, but in general you text BAL or MINI to that nuimber and it sends you back your balance or a mini statement.

Don't think you'll really ever get that from mainstream banks, especially the one I work out. It seems their attitute to mobile banking is that the industry changes too much and they can't afford resources to suit every mobile phone.
With computers, you have the main browsers like IE, FireFox, Safari, so they make it work for those, but others are a bonus. There are so many platforms and browsers for mobile, they just won't do it.
The bank I work for made me laugh when the iPhone came out and they advertised that their internet banking was made iPhone friendly like they made it like that, truth is, they just got lucky!
sad thing is, monilink are just releasing a version for the iphone. They are then updating for the other mainstream touchscreen phones (nokias and samsungs etc) in december...but nothing for us.
Sucks really.
Java
I would also like to get this running,
I am getting the message through with a link to download the app, I then paste this link into my java Midlet Manager, IE opens and and says it cant find the link, I f I was able to get this downloaded i dont see why it wouldnt run in the Midlet Manager ?
Any halp will be much appreciated.
Merry Christmas
I find using NatWest online banking on Hero quite ok. I used to use monilink on my windows mobile phones as the opera browser seemed incompatible. But all the browsers I tried on Android work without any problems.
Well, I feel a bit like a kid on Christmas morning who has excitedly ripped through 17 layers of Christmas wrapping paper only to find a pair of wildly patterned woolly socks from that aunt you nver really liked...
I know Marketplace, as a unified platform for wimno apps is in its infancy and that there are cracking issues and such, but given Microsofts many years of work in this area, not to mention developers work here and elsewhere, as well as the plethora of free applications all over the interweb I would have thought that they could unify a lot quicker!
Could they not give a guy a job of just herding them up, rounding up some freeware and doing a bit of good ol' Microsoft altruism and help kick start this thing! What have they got to lose? They could well afford it, so why no push, even on freeware, the biggest enticer!
We know the model works exceedingly well on other platforms (except Nokia/Ovi of course), and new users (greenhorns, noobies etc) would prefer to go to one place (ON THEIR DEVICE) read some peer reviews and get downloading..
In Ireland right now, there are a sum total of 82 apps in the app store. 2 weeks ago there were 80.
Now, I have the party poppers and bunting here for when it hits the 100 mark (picture that Press Release- iPhone style ) but I'd really like to track the growth of the Marketplace through carriers and in different countries.
So,
How many apps in YOUR Marketplace (approx) and where you at?
Found anything good?
Cheers,
wab

Mon Dieu! Good God man.. now you know how sensitive that HD2 screen is, be careful browsing the marketplace in Holland. A slipped finder and.... !
If I recall correctly, there used to be some application in the iTunes Store too, called I Am Rich. Which was priced at 999,99 dollar!
Check out this thread m8. The app allows you to log into any countrys marketplace. tried it as there are loads of apps on the usa marketplace.

11 apps....zero games
From Norway
In Netherlands I had 22 apps, and Ireland I had 61
Approx 100 in total in Australia. 43 games... almost 4 times less than the US
How do you count the number of apps in Marketplace?? If I just add up all the numbers for categories, I get 94 apps for Russia. However, some apps appear in more than one category, so the actual number is less than that.
63 apps in total in France. 30 games.
BTW, I just noticed something. It seems that the market is chosen by Marketplace by the settings you have in Regional and Language settings at the time of installing the program. I have one device where I set it as English (UK), and another one set as Russian (Russia), so I get different number of apps there. I guess uninstalling Marketplace, swithing to English (US), reinstalling it and switching back should give you access to US market.
Yeah, but I guess you'd still need a US credit card to buy apps from the US market, like when using the 'marketplace location switch' tool.
Microsoft should just make all non-location-specific apps internationally available as quickly as possible, whatever it takes, and not leave it up to the developers. This just makes the whole "let's take on the App Store" idea utterly ridiculous. By the way, in Belgium: 12 apps at the moment.
Yes, I agree, this market segregation is plain ridiculous. Not that I care too much though - I don't like the idea of buying an application and not having a cab handy. I don't want to bother reinstalling everything over the air in case I flash another ROM or something. If they don't want to sell something to me I'll get it for free - plain and simple.

You dont have to reinstall it, just switch. Works on my Athena 7510 without softreset as well, just restart the MP-app.
Doesn't work for me.
Can we get some more country stats? Would like to see the level of progression if possible.

Just download 'Marketplace Region Switch' from the forum and you can have a look at any country's Marketplace yourself
My Hong Kong service provider, CSL, who supplied my HD2, has messed with the Opera and ie apps. They've put in a bar at the top advertising their own website, MyNet, and I can't see how to get rid of it. It takes up about 25% of the screen real estate. Any ideas how they did it and how to get rid of it?

I'd recommend flashing the 1.48 ROM to get rid of that. You'll need to read about Goldcard, but it's currently free, and will allow you install an official HTC ROM.
Goldcard stuff is here...

I expect you'll have plenty of questions about this process. Don't be afraid to ask the guys in those threads for help. Just make sure you've read all the posts first, as there's lots of help already out there.
Good luck
This sounds like the same irritating CSL MyNet "service" they tried to provide to me.
If it's the same thing then it's easy to disable.
In addition to the MyNet tab there are two other tabs to the right. The 3rd is "Customer Service". Near the bottom of this tab is a section for "1O1O MyNet setting" which provides an option to disable MyNet toolbar. After you do this you will then get a warning about having to pay for data accessed outside "MyNet" but I think this is nothing special as presumably you have some data plan already. The warning only comes up at the time when you disable the "service".
I don't know whether this is just a coincidence, but once this toolbar was disabled I found that Opera's zoom (which had stopped working properly sometime around when MyNet toolbar first appeared) was working properly again.
BTW I can't see how to re-enable it once it is disabled. (Not that I want to do so, it's just my nature to want to know how to reverse whatever changes I make ...)
Hi,
I would like to be able to pre-define certain words and short phrases which I then send out on Twitter as situation updates.
Anyone know any Twitter clients that allow this? I'm struggling a little with the Nexus One keyboard.
Thanks.
I'm assuming you mean something like the iPhone's "Social Beacon" app that they created on The Gadget Show? (Dunno if you saw that or not... but I noticed you're also from the UK, so there's a possibility.)
Don't think there's anything like that on Android yet I'm afraid. But if you're having trouble with the keyboard I suggest downloading ShapeWriter. It can take a little while to get used to but it's free at the moment and once you do get the hang of it it's insanely fast and very accurate.
Say I wanted to send out score updates on Manchester United games (I don't).
I may pre-define the terms 'Manchester United' and 'Tottenham Hotspur' before the game so that I don't have to key them both in in full each time a goal is scored.
I'll have a look at Shapewriter. Thanks.
Which provider buggers about with the OS the least?
T mobile installs no apps, 3 installs one, and Orange several. However, (I think) you can remove all the carrier apps from your phone, so that doesn't really matter.
Haven't T-Mobile messed with the search function?

No that's O2, when in the browser if you hit search it takes you to ****ty Yahoo Search. I mean really? I would even take Bing over Yahoo.

Yes they have, they have made the default search some crappy tmobile search site powered by google.
Eugh. I hope they allow us to change this soon.
T-Mo has tweaked the search within Internet Explorer only so that when browsing the web and you push the search button, it takes you to the T-Mo Favourites page with a Google-powered search box on it. That behaviour only occurs when you're currently browsing a page.
If you're not already browsing, and you push the search button, the standard Bing Search page will appear.
Also, bear in mind that you'll get 3GB of browsing a month with T-Mobile as opposed to 1GB with 3 or 500MB/1GB with Orange, and T-Mobile isn't quite so aggressive as other networks if you exceed your browsing allowance. Generally, if you exceed your allowance by a modest amount, they'll let it go; if you exceed significantly, they may throttle your speed; if you persistently exceed by a significant amount, they'll send you a letter or give you a call to discuss your usage.
Having the T-Mobile redirect to their search page from within IE is a small price to pay for such a generous web allowance - and if that redirect really bugs you, there's a very simple workaround: just remember to press the Start/Windows button before pressing the search button. That will take you to the Start screen, and then launch the full-screen Bing Search page. One extra button-push for an extra 2GB a month is worth it.
The only other customisation that T-Mo have included on the phone is their logo splash screen, but the phone boots up so quickly that it doesn't really make much difference having it there. I half-expected them to customise the OS colour scheme with white background and pink/magenta tiles - but it was supplied with the standard dark background/blue tiles theme.
So yeah, T-Mobile every time. Hope that info helps.
T-Mobile also print "T-Mobile" on the battery cover. It's not obvious, it's not in colour (like an Orange logo would be), and if it really bothered you, you could probably swap the battery cover.
I ruled out Three, as they don't do 18 month contracts, and I don't want to be tied to a first-gen phone of a brand new platform for too long. I was already on T-Mo and they gave me a good deal to stay.
I'm very happy with my T-Mo Omnia 7. I don't have to worry about the net usage at all, and the ability to use the Orange signal means everywhere I couldn't get a signal before now gets a solid Orange connection.
T-Mobile every time for me too.
One point though -- T-Mobile are only offering 1GB per month on Windows Based Phones, you get 3GB per month with android based phones.
Can anyone confirm they have 3GB as standard without having to blag it with the SR?
For direct sales (i.e. purchases directly from T-Mobile), they give the same 3GB to Windows Phones that is offered to Android connections. Although this isn't set out anywhere that I've seen on the T-Mobile website, any number of people (myself included) have spoken to any number of T-Mobile CSRs and had this information given to them many times over.
The only circumstance under which a Windows Phone will be connected to T-Mobile with only 1GB per month is where the purchase has been made through a third-party reseller, such as Carphone Warehouse or Buymobilephones.net. Under those circumstances, however, many users have successfully had their FUP increased to 3GB by calling T-Mobile once they've received their devices, but the approval of this seems to be discretionary rather than routine.
Thanks guys, looks like T-Mob is the winner for me .
