Which Hermes should I buy?? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Hi everyone,
I recently bought the Cingular service (8525 too) to compare to Verizon/Sprint - and needless to sayt stuck with it. Especially after applying the 3DES rom and trinity 1.35 radio - it rocks! BUT then I started reading more and more of the wiki and got to thinking.
Which is the best model to own? I still have 2 weeks to take this model back and buy another Hermes. I really want the front facing vga cam - and if an antenna mod comes out for GPS - I would like to be equiped with the best chance of getting the mod.
Can I get some opinions? Oh, side note - I travel europe1-2 months a year, if I do stay with the Cingular phone I have now - since it is mod'ed do I need to do anything different?
thanks

All the Hermes/TyTN models are more or less identical internally, apart from minor operator-specific hardware differences. Your's being a Cingular 8525 so I assume that it is missing the front camera. Most other models come with the camera. Apart from that, only the housing differs. More on this in the wiki.
You should not ask which Hermes model to choose but instead "Hermes or some other model, such as the i-mate Ultimate 7150" . . .

As Abubasim says, the models are all almost identical except the fromt camera. If you want a camera change the phone (if it won't cost you) otherwise no reason to change it.
As for using it overseas, I have the Vodafone VPA1605. I travel Europe, Americas and Asia. I use radio 1.38.00.10 and have no problems anywhere with it.

thanks - Yes my main reason for changing would be for the ability to have a front facing camera and GPS capabilities. While I have read the GPS FAQ (being antenna crippled) - I believe the GPS in the unit is just fine and when paired with the UMTS data (which can provide up to 50m accuracy) - it will be a fully functioning GPS (capable of locking) - even without the antenna.
Unless anyone suggests another phone that already has the same great features + GPS operating, I will move to the TyTN

HTC i-MATE Pocket PC Phone Edition is the King of the Hill

I wanted to let everyone know that both I and a good buddy of mine are running our brand new (two week old) i-MATE Pocket PC Phone Edition units directly from HTC. THEY are both the FULL ENGLISH ROM right from the factory direct, no flashing required. The are excellent units with good battery life and everything better than the T-Mobile units we have before. They have lots of bonus software and since we didn't flash them, we will have no difficulty loading any upgrades later on from Carrier Devices. If you need to know more about the devices go to www.imate.com
We ordered our from a great company in the middle east called Compume at www.compume.com and the devices were delivered to our doorsteps in Toronto within seven days of ordering. The pricing was excellent and BEST of all. If you order the english full version you get a full year world wide warrenty, yes worldwide full warrenty. We are running them with the our original sync/charge USB cables at work and car chargers from our XDA units - perfect no problems ... Again, ordering the i-MATE from Compume means a full warrenty and full english version and less than seven days shipping. The devices surf very fast and with the patch for the ID caller program provided already for the i-MATE units, its flawless. Battery life (after 12 hours of work today (on the whole time) it sits at 41% still. Multi-tasking is great, pictures are surprising very very good. MSN is terrific as always. It holds its GPRS and if your wondering if it is worth it to upgrade from the original - it is truely like night and day ... Dont' hesitate with Carrier Devices HTC i-MATE or ordering from Compume. This is without question the best unit on the market and I've had them all. Oh btw - HBH-65 BT headset, perfect and flawless. I am running as is my buddy on FIDO in Canada with no difficulties what so ever. Dont play with your money and go for the original English Rom. If your wondering about price, our total bill came to 2200.00 CDN for TWO devices and that included shipping costs (7 days and that was with customs)door to door.
You're preaching to the converted, dude !!
camera issue in imate
hi everybody,
got my imate and i really like it . however there is one issue that i think needs attention. although i know the camera is just a toy but why does it mess up images? when I am trying to fix a position to take a picture, everything is clear but when i take the picture there are problems in the picture such as it's quite unclear. is this an issue with the jpg compression utility or something like that?
oh yeah also, today i recieved a call and i tried picking it up but my imate froze. i had to reset and the call was dropped.. this only happened once but does anyone know what's the issue there?
thanks.
Rather lightweight compared to the XDAII though isn't it? 1/8th of the RAM, 1/2 the ROM, 1/3rd the CPU speed and no bluetooth (even the limited stack in the XDAII).
It comes down to what you want, a phone with PDA capabilities or a PDA with a built-in phone.
I agree....I am the guy with the other I-mate. After using this for a week I have to say is WOW. What a powerful pocket PC. I loved my Tmobile XDA but this just blows it away.
Pics and that are @ http://www.carrierdevices.com.au
The store compu-me is a LARGE retail chain in UAE so very stable. You use your Visa or Mastercard which should have 100% protection so not like buying through paypal or sending some guy money who will get someone else to sent it. So we felt good about buying that way. We spoke to the store and they were very helpful and shipped it out right away.
Just a few notes on the I-mates. They do have support for Arabic. Meaning when you first turn it on, or perform a HARD reset it will prompt you to install Arabic language support, Just click decline to the prompt and your ROM will be fully english. I have not had mine lockup or do anything strange was a very smooth week.
The devices did come with a Full Leather Case (I am hearing some do not), the option CD came with 2 complete high end games, Tennis and Odyssey.
In the Box you Get:
- The i-mate (of course)
- USB Cradle
- Power Adapter (tis a UK plug, you just need to purchase a prong adapter) it is a 110 volt and 220 volt adapter!
- Leather Case
- Stereo Headphones
- Activesync/Outlook
- Bonus CD
- Extra Sylus
- Full Colour Manual in English of course (very good, I actually read the chapter on the camera lol)
I have used my Lili sync from Pocket PC techs without any problems all week at work, also bought some writeshields from them (expensive but glad I did).
If you want to buy XDA2 then this is the only SMART way to go...
What? Who? Promo?
What's with all this "make a huge promo in 2000 words or more"? "Hey you really need one of these"!!!
Bogus. I played with one... yea, if you want a tiny little screen, no RAM, no processor speed, then it's great. If you want a PDA that's also a phone, then that's not it.
Umm 128mb, 400 Mhz...what are you talking about, the specs of the imate are the best there is. You must have the XDA2 / Imate confused with something else?

Telus HTC P4000 = CDMA Hermes?

Hey everyone,
I've decided to start a post on this cuz i haven't been about to find much on this recently released phone from telus (a canadian carrier). I currently have an HTC TyTN. However, the touchscreen is completely dead. Since this phone isn't sold by any canadian carriers, it's virtually impossible to get it repaired let alone replaced.
I've recently come across the Telus HTC P4000 which was officially launced by telus in april. I noticed the specs are very similar to that of the TyTN except for the following:
-A CDMA phone without a sim card slot.
-256 mb rom vs 128 mb rom
-64 mb sdram vs 64 mb ram? (**i dunno if the hermes ram is SD)
-a QUALCOMM MSM7500, 384 MHz CPU vs a Samsung 400 MHz CPU.
I'm thinking of selling my X01HT and signing up with telus and grabbing that phone. I could really use some feedback on this idea from my fellow Hermes owners. And could use some help measuring the pros and cons.
So far the major CON of going to this phone would be that it's slightly slower and looks to have ZERO upgradability in terms of OS, RADIO, or any type of rom flashing. Meaning no sweet WM6 upgrades from custel or jasjamming or any of the other cool chefs...
Here are some links:
http://www.telusmobility.com/content/clientcare/pcs_east/guides/htc_p4000/htc_p4000.pdf
-user manual (specs can be found here as well)
http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2007/04/17/the-htc-p4000-for-telus-in-the-flesh/
-engadgetmobile article on this phone
Any feedback or thoughts would be great. Thanks guys...
I din't know how much money you want to spend, but expansys do a good range of phones - including the dopod 838 pro (http://www.expansys.ca/)
I think most of these are phone only, without contract etc but I'm sure you can shop around for something with a contract.
Personally for my style of useage I'd spend out on one of the Hermes varieties.
You could also try ebay - maybe pick up a bargain 8525 or an old hermes to repair yours with.
Good luck
I just bought 2 HTC P4000 for some of our work phones. One has been activated so far, and it is working great. It is allot slimmer than the PPC-6700, which I had last year. I am a newbie when it comes to upgrading these things or doing hacks etc, but I am quite happy with the phone so far. If you have any specific questions please feel free to ask me and I will try to answer them for you.
thanks guys,
I passed by a telus store today to check it out. The lady was nice enough to take a brand new phone out of its box and run it for me. I got to play around with it for a while and here are my impressions which are mostly positive:
-the slid out keyboard seems to have some kind of power assist feature (not exactly but you know what i mean, think hiptop) which makes it pretty cool and easier to slid out as oppose to having to manually push up the screen till you hear it lock into place (X01HT)
-The HTC P4000 is virtually the same size except just as twelveca stated, it is slightly thinner.
-same white default htc bootscreen + a telus logo screen and wm5 setup. I doubt the possibility of any kind of upgrade unless there are some crazy chefs out there that get their hands on this phone.
-has FN and CAPS lights just like a computer keyboard!
-black keyboard, dark gray screen housing, and a bumpy pattern on the back for added grip.
-I checked out the device info screen and to my surprise, it said it has a !400! MHz CPU as oppose to the 384 MHz stated in the specs. 64 MB RAM, 256 MB Onboard Flash memory confirmed.
-From the few minutes playing with it, it seems to perform at the same level (if not better) as the HERMES.
-Doesn't show any signs of screen alignment problems.
-EVDO High speed wireless capable.
There ya have it, looks like i'm leaning towards buying it. Just have to get over the idea that i won't be able to upgrade roms (for now at least) or use sim cards...But other than that, it seems like a great phone.
Oh i just found a link to a "Complete" review of the P4000 on HF
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1153541
It includes points i forgot to mention as well as ones i didn't even know of...
Here are some of them (note these are compared to the ut starcom 6700):
"
-dual core processor??
- REV A compatible (with software upgrade which Telus has officially announce they will do)
-more buttons on face and sides
-better one-handedoperation
-bigger battery
-better battery life
-better brighter screen
-better 2mp camera with improved software and settings
-AKU 3.3 which brings with it A2DP among other things
"
P4000
Just recently picked one of these up and have had a couple of days to play with it. I upgraded from an Imate PPC (original 2003 edition) and could not be happier.
This is a rock solid PPC, only wish my GPS hardware was compatable, sigh.
I was a little unsure of Telus but after my fiascos with Rogers, i dont expect them to give me half the grief.
cool, i'll be picking one up probably some time next week...just gotta figure out how i'm gunna cancel my plan with fido and transfer the number over...
...maybe we can start a new forum for this phone when more people have it...
Who that knows as to unlock Telus or P4000 ?
HTC TYTN
ji1386, how much do you want for your broken TYTN?
TYTN
ji1386, if you want to sell your broken TYTN, I could use it for parts if unable to fix it. Send me a PM with your offer. Thanks
I have this phone basically since it came out from Telus, and I must say I am quite enjoyikng it. Best Pocket PC phone out, IMO.
This phone is upgradeable to Windows Mobile 6.....however, there is no confirmed release date on when this will be. Also, checking the HTC site will most likely get you nowhere as Telus will need to configure this upgrade to have Telus aspects on there, for instance, The Telsus bootscreen, the today themes, etc.
GPS in HTC P4000
The GPS in this phone someone post what u gotta do to get GPS working on this phone in Stand Alone GPS Mode with No A-GPS.

HTC Advantage X7500 or X7501?

Hello,
I want to buy a HTC Athena. My preference is the HTC Advantage X7501. X7501 comes out at the end of this month at most places. I really don't know the difference between X7500 and X7501 and would like to know. Other than the WM6 i don't see anything. But it could be more.
Anyways I live in Canada and I would like to buy X7501. Can anyone provide me with some good place offering a nice price? On eBay brand new ones are going for $900. Anyone know some other place cause I don't want to buy one from eBay.
I got mine from CompUSA for US$900. I beleive that Amazon has them for US$850
Practically, you get Tom Tom software but no maps on the 7500. 7501 has shovelware GPS with a monthly cost (I wouldn't call that preloaded....)

can i just install tom tom on it
I would suggest the x7500 since it has the front VGA camera.
Then just unlock it with olipro's unlocker and use a branded WM6 upgrade (eg. Dopod U1000 WM6).
Software is software. It is always, in my opinion, better to get the software you like/need instead of looking for bundles of crap.
There is always free alternatives to everything. Or you could be shrewd and hard reset your device each 30 days (when most trialware expires) and voila, you get another 30 days. Of course you backup your important data first.

What are you saying? X7501 doesnt have a front VGA Camera?
And all thats happened in the X7501 is the WM6 change and some other software?
Well plainly i dont require all this software and what not. I just require a Vanilla WM6. I thought they might have fixed some bugs and twitches here and there. But looks like none of you got any insider.... If they had to update the devices with WM6 and other software could have released on their site.
I posted the same question on here a few weeks back. I went with the 7500, mainly because it had the front camera and TomTom. Even though it has WM5 on it, I knew the WM6 upgrade would be out soon, so no big deal waiting a bit.
If I had purchased the 7501 at CompUSA for $900+tax, it would have only been about $175 less than what I paid for the 7500. Besides, my CompUSA has been out ever since the first week they started selling them.
I needed instant gratification, so I paid a little extra for the 7500, and got the front cam as a bonus. It might not ever be of much use, but at least it's there in case some cool app comes out that can utilize it.
I just found one at CompUSA in Indianapolis; its mine now. One thing to consider: You can get the two year Advance Exchange extended warranty here. If the thing quits 23 months from now and they cannot replace it, you get a comparable (meaning usually current and better) model or full credit.
Damn... why would they remove the front camera from 7501???
that only makes the phone worse. I dont need any apps. Tomtom / WM6 or whatever you know. We can get wm6 from here and i have a preloaded tomtom software that i can setup in 10 minutes. Well i have no choice. i will get one from amazon for $850.

Weren't you asking the same questions here in March of this year x7500 vs 7501...Saying you could get a x7500 for 850 canadien or something??
And all you wanted was a vanilla x7500.....You should have boought one in March or April of this year as your were previously talking about
It is a great device...Good Luck

Are Universal's still worth buying?

I have the chance to by a universal for $140 or a htc/at&t fuze for $178. Did i make the right choice going with the cooler and cheeper device, even though it lacks the 3.2mp camera, fm radio, gps, g-class wifi, and smaller/slower ram and rom size?
Welcome to forums
Of course it´s worth every cent!!
Universal is one of the best devices ever build by HTC, and to this date still on the top ones!
Go for it!!!
I don't have a UNI but have most of the other HTC devices. How does the data work on AT&T's network? Can it do Edge speeds or just GPRS? I don't think it has the proper radios to do Edge in US.
Thanks.
There are some American models of this great device, and I´m sure you can get it!
The Universal is indeed a great device. Not only does it work as a phone with everything one needs, it also is a great Windows Mobile device.
What I appreaciate is:
- VGA screen
- full usable keyboard
- pretty fast processor
- size compatible with back-pocket of my jeans, yet big enough to actually use the VGA resultion
What I miss:
- only 64MB RAM, too little for WM6.5 builds (or at least to use them properly)
- no GPS
- no High Speed Internet connection
- camera pretty poor and outdated
I got myself a T-Online Ameo very cheap and while this device features all the missing items, regarding the Universal, it has a major flaw: it does not fit in most of trouser's pocket! This means I keep it at home most of the days...
Newer devices may have equal features, better processors, RAM, etc., but they cost around 500-600 Euro, at least 4 times the price of a second hand Universal!
However, you should definitly checkout the new Windows Mobile models from Acer, like the M900. It costs £189 at Expansys and has some impressive specs.
Cheers,
vma

- I can't upgrade it. I would have to send my Universal to a professional lab, plus I would have to find the right chips. Not exactly something I could do myself, though I am quite familiar with soldering tiny things.
- I use BT GPS, when using my Universal, but it is not nearly as nice as having an integraded GPS module like on my Athena.
- The Athena features a noticable faster internet experience.
Not starting any discussion, just wanted it to be noticed, specially the memory upgrade. If you see how much it will cost you and then add the value or cost of the Universal, you probably might as well swap for a more recent device, unless you happen to get the memory upgrade done by someone you know for little money.
Cheers,
vma

Maybe you are right and I got confused with this providers thinking there were from USA:
Dopod 900 / Qtek 9000 / SFR v1640 / Vodafone v1640 / Vodafone VPA IV / T-Mobile MDA Pro / i-mate JASJAR / O2 Xda Exec / Orange SPV M5000 / Grundig GR980 / E-Plus PDA IV

soooooooooo im guessing I won for picking up one with a 8gb mem card for 40 GBP on ebay?
Honestly, I dont think I do much to the universal, I also picked up a kaiser at the same time and that will be my main modding device, I just liked the larger keyboard on the universail...it really looks like something I could write short docs on the move with.
Great choice!
Enjoy your Uni!
Have a read on the Wiki
i just purchased a brand new spv m5000 for 150 im waiting for it to come in the mail. ive downloaded roms and software for it. im going to use it as a backup and a showoff phone. no one knows what it is so i can probably resale for more than what i paid for it.
I say for the price Unis go for these days, depreciating as any device would, and considering what it can do - it's a great device to purchase or upgrade to.

I've used the HTC Universal on AT&T's network and it was just dreadful. Poor reception and only GPRS. AT&T simply doesn't support the frequencies used by the phone and the one that is supported isn't on many towers.
Yesterday my Uni died...
Camera is dead and I cannot reactive the sound in all speakers
But now it's time for a new cell phone. Qtek 9000...black is beautiful
Until there is no comparable device I will use the Uni

Anyone heard about Touch2 T3320?

Hi,
I was looking for a winmo phone to be updated on the stock quotes. I shortlisted to touch2. But in India, there is a special version named T3320. And this one is cheaper. The spec sheet shows it doesn't have 3G. But the price difference is too high, are there any other differences?
http://www.htc.com/in/product/touch2/specification.html (Click special version).
BTW, I need something like the stocks tab in HD2 on the touch2. Is there any ROM that includes it? (the stocks tab doesn't need 3d accelerator i guess).
Have checked and could not see any other difference.....you must determine if you need 3G or not. Myself have in my communication manager a GSM/3G switch installed. In most cases GSM is good enough for me. Saves your battery also.
What is price difference actually? Perhaps is in accesoiries?
You can check with a local HTC dealer.
I am in India next week....and usually one of activities on my trips is to check out the various electronics markets.....always on the hunt for something new....
If I have the chance will check and report back.......
I think i saw somewhere it doesnt have GPS too, am i right? I think its connected with the laws there, i said i think i red about it somewhere.
well, GPS is indeed not mentioned at http://www.htc.com/in/product/touch2/spec_special.html
Here is the reply which i got from HTC Support
Dear Mr. Bhatia,
Thank you for contacting our Customer Support Center. We are dedicated to providing you with the best quality service and answering all of your questions and concerns.
To clarify your issue, you stated that: You want to the difference between the Touch 2 models,
In this regard we would like to intimate you that that you can check with link,http://www.htc.com/in/product/touch2/specification.html for T-3333 and check with the link http://www.htc.com/in/product/touch2/spec_special.html for Touch 2 t-3320 phone models.
HTC Touch2 phone(model no-T3320) is not a GPS enabled phone and also do not have 3G services while the other Touch 2 phone( model no- T3333) is GPS enabled and have 3 G functionality.
-----
These are the only two differences that they have told.
Regards,
Naveen
Thanks for the reply guys. My friend has finally bought that phone. I had checked it just once. I didn't quite like it.. this was the first htc device on my hand and I had expected a lot...
The price of the T3320 (the one my friend bought) was 12,500 INR.
Whereas the price of the T3333 (with 3g and gps) is 21,000 INR.
If the only difference between the two phones is 3g and gps, then I'm pretty sure that the touch2 T3333 is definitely not worth its price. It doesn't have autofocus and flash? If my friend had spent 21K and had found out that it doesn't have flash, he would've felt sorry for buying that phone. And touch sensitivity is not bad and not too good. It was okay.
But for 12K the T3230 is a bit worthy. If only it had a auto focus and flash and a 3d accelerator (hee hee hee I know this is too much) for running Touch Flo 3D or HD2 Sense UI.
