please help with my MDA Vario.. - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

i have an MDA Vario which doesn't work anymore.
it won't turn on or do anything .
it was working fine before i let the battery run out completely, as i forgot to charge it.
i don't have a proper charger, instead i was using a USB cable for a digital camera which had the same plug that fit in the Vario. it used to charge it when the phone was switched on.
does anyone know how to fix this?
do i have to buy a new charger or a new battery?
thanks.

Search here for the 9volt battery trick. There used to be an issue with older ROMs on like the Cingular 8125 where it wouldn't charge once the battery dropped to a certain point. There was a trick to "jump start" the battery with a 9v battery. Then it would charge again via USB or wall charger.
Once you do get it charged, you probably need to make sure you are on your carrier's latest ROM.
Note that while Razr chargers also use the mini-USB plug, I've heard some of the off brand Razr chargers will not give a good charge to a Wizard.

I used to have a hp pda and left it in the draw for a few months and couldnt charge mine, i had to buy a new battery.
Dont get a Razr charger it wont work.

Another possibility since the battery is completely dead is to plug in a charger (really should be a wall charger and not USB from a computer) and just let it sit for about 5 mins. Then press the on button (with it still connected to the charger) to see if it will turn on. If so it should then charge on up. If it doesn't I'd suspect the battery may be damaged.

thanks for the replies, i'll try the things you said

HTC not charging, battery dead?

Helloes guys and goils.
I have a HTC wiz, and for a good few weeks now I have had problems with it.
First off, It would NOT charge through the Wall Socket OR USB, I let it run down over XMas and it's not been the same again.
It just will not charge or come on.
When I plug it into USB it looks as if it is charging, with the Orange light and The power bar turns to the socket looking thing, but when I leave it to charge it just goes off and doesnt come back on.
When I plug it into the wall socket the HTC does not respond.
I have been asking my mate in work to put it in his and charge it via HIS wall charger, which has worked a few times, but I seem to be getting a very awful run out of my battery.
I am thinking it is the phone and NOT the battery as i first thought, I dunno, im scared of throwing up £30 notes on a new battery only to find it is the phone.
What do you guys think I should do?
I heard somewhere that it is a SOFTWARE based charge and not a hardware based charge, what does that mean?
DO u think a flash would help it? I cant see it myself.
Or is my HTC just goosed?
Well
I can speak from experience when I tell you my wizard nuked 2 batteries...
how I dont know.
Hopefully one of the gurus can shed some light on your situation

If you do replace the battery, look on eBay - I got a new 1250 mA battery (there are also 1100 mA versions, don't get that) for $13.99US including shipping - works great!
Make sure its nothing simple... Try the USB cable plugged directly into the computer without using a USB hub (if you are) and different USB ports on the back of the computer. Also try different outlets for the AC adapter. If still nothing else I'd even ask for help from your local cell phone store (put on a sad face) and see if they'll lend you a power cord and or swap out batteries to see if they can reproduce the problem on a different Wizard, battery, etc.
There has been many posts on this subject with several different fixes.. i would suggest searching and reading and you can find your answers
My case
Hi,
I had somewhat similar problem with mine. My porblem was that I bought the Wizard with a Motorola charger. It had the same mini usb plug and when I plugged it to charge, the led on the wizard was orange and the Wizard indicated its charging, but the moment I unlugg it, the battery indicator was coming back to its previous state. My solution is to use the PC USB to charge it, on a couple of occasions I had the battery completely drained and had to "jump start it" by connecting the wires from the usb directly to the + and - of the battery. Even used once my good old AA Ni-MH charger to jump start the battery and it worked.
So perhaps you are not getting power from the cable, why not try with different charger or charging from another USB source (PC).
Hope this helps
Just happened to me tonight. Thought that my Wizard was toast as well.
I merely took the battery out for 10 minutes, put battery back in, and plugged device into original wall charger. All is well now.

Orange/Red Light

Hi,
Wondered if anyone can help me out. I have an XDA Mini S, not been used for a while but now I've tried to use it again and I cannot get it to charge. Sometimes orange light comes on and it looks like its charging but then light starts flashing orange or goes out, device won't stay on more than a few seconds. Also sometimes get red light flashing or constant, anyone seen this??
Thanks.

battery is dead, get a new one...
It could be that the battery is too dead to get it to boot into windows. I've noticed on my G4 Qtek 9100 Wizard, that if i kill the battery all the way i cannot get it to charge what so ever.
It seems as if the charging circuit will not function unless the device is booted up. I can put the battery into a standalone charger to charge it up a bit, then put it into the Wizard and then it will charge the rest of the way after is has booted into windows.
I made a post previously about this, and got one reply which did not help, as a registry change has no function if the device cannot even turn on to begin with

Are you plugging it in with the wall charger? If so maybe the battery is dead?
Doug: The Wizard can not be charged (except by the wall charger or some other method) unless the battery still has juice. It requires extra power to jump start the battery. This is documented in the manual and in lots of places on this board...

Thanks, I did not know this was an offically known thing. It's unusual from any other standard cell phone or PDA i have owned in the past.
With them I did not need to worry about the battery running down to 0. If it did, I could just plug the phone or PDA in and they would charge, after they had charged for 10min or so there would be enough charge to turn the device on. I perfer to run my battery down to 30-25% before charging again, due to the limit on charge cycles that Lithim-Ion batteries have. Although sometimes i just forget to charge it
Those charge cycles are the reason alot of people kill the capacity of their laptop/phone battery in a few months. They constantly plug and unplug from their AC adapter. Each plugin initiates another charge, even if its just a small top off charge.
Finally got a new battery and still no joy, when i plug charger into phone i get orange light as if its charging but after about 20 seconds the orange light starts flashing (not a missed call/message as phone has been flashed and no sim card in). Do you think the charging circuit could be broken?
hi,
don't know if this is of any use but heres video of problem.

Interesting... hmm. Have you tried charging the battery(ies) in a different phone? (eg. a friend's, service provider's store?, etc?) Have you tried a different charger? USB-comp, wall, auto?

Tried a few different chargers, usb cable and car, none of these work, unit worked with new battery but must have been charge present when battery first delivered. Incidently all chargers used do charge my xda orbit so i know they work.

I Have Dopod U1000 Please Help I Have Problem For Charging Battery!!!!!!!!

Hi guys i have dopod u1000 the battery life is realy good and im charging it every 2 days but unfortunatly when the battery got empty i want to recharge it will takes about 8 hours to get full charge!!!!! yes almost 8 hour for full charge. this is realy bad for someone if realy want to carry this thing everythime to everywhere because if the battery got empty then you have to sit at hoe for 8 hour for full charge or got second phone when the dopod u1000 battery got empty swuch the sim card to the senderly phone when you put you dopod to charging. now this is the question i have . i need a external battey charger i mean put your second battery sepratley to he device and charge by itself as you know the other pda hav ethis kind of charge it have battery slot place you put battery on it and it will charge automaticly. now i want to know do you guys know where can i find such external batterycharger for my dopod u1000 ? let me know
Try charginf battery with the display Off
How about charging it every night when you are going to sleep?
In any case, turn off WiFi, LCD, GPS, bluetooth and any other data connections while not using it.
If you charge using the supplied USB cable, be sure to set the LCD brightness to minimum for a much faster charge.
It is much better to charge battery over travel charger, it must be just few hours for full charge
Are you, by any chance, charging the unit with a computer?

There is a significant difference in charging with the supplied wall charger compared to the USB cable. Just use the wall charger and your charge times will drop to about 3 hours from 10% battery to full charge.
If you have lost the wall charger, be sure to set the LCD brightness to minimum while charging through USB.

Of course the original charger is the best to use.
If you do not have the original charger, find a charger that outputs 5V and 1A.
Charging via USB seems to be a MS Windows Mobile issue, not necessarily an Anthena problem. Since WM5 Aku 3, most devices have issues charging over USB..

Wizard not powering on or charging

Hey folks,
I've been given a Wizard that isn't working, but I get to keep it if I can fix it . Just now the the problem is that it won't power on and I can't get it to charge. I don't have any of it's 'original' accessories (eg USB cable and charger). The USB cable I have is a 5-pin, which I believe is the correct one for this phone, but plugging it into my computer's USB port isn't having any effect, ie it isn't charging the phone. I have the charger for a Motorola Razr which has the same connector to plug into the phone, but when I try to charge it with this nothing is happening. I don't know if the phone is a G3 or a G4 and I don't know how to tell which it is. Can anyone give me some help here?

As the battery is fully discharged and dead,It won't charge through usb cable with pc,as it only provides a charge of 0.5 amp,it'll also not charge with a Motorolla charger,it can only be charged through a wall charger which is capable of giving output charge of 1.0 amp or you can try a 'Jump' start the battery. But if the battery is faulty,it won't charge at all, you'll have to get a new battery.
Thanks for the reply zabardast.
How would I go about jump starting the battery? I'd like to try it before I go out and buy a new one.

How to 'Jump start',read my post in this thread, hope you get it right and working.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=374108
if you're good with electricity and have a DMM or Fluke you can also check the resistance on the battery and use a steadysize capacitor to try and jump it. it might burn the battery but it doesn't work anyways so you don't have much to lose.
the capacitor size can be calculated using:
C(capacity) = 1/wR - where w is the network frequency.. wherever you live. (should be easy to find it. usually 50hz) and R is the value you see on the DMM.
buy that capacitor and charge it using either an AC source or another wizard battery (fully charged) even tho i doubt it would have enough power to charge the capacitor... and then you can jump your battery. an AC source would be a great option since you can set the frequency to the exact network frequency in your house.
Hope it helps..
Iv'e actually had similar problems, and I've oddly enough found that if I used the car charger it would turn it right on. I went to EVERY Cing/AT&T, T-Mobile store and used every charger and nothing. I work for Asurion so I see this happen all the time, Im wondering if I just replace the battery with the High-Capacity type if this problem will be over.
Also just a side not, but it only seems to happen when I leave it off the charger and it shuts off by itself
yep
i had the same problem. and as of today just bought a new battery! my love is fine and alive again!!! the battery is only around 10.00 and is well worth the money to have my babe back! do the same man! you WON'T be sorry ... and it's worth 10.00 not to have to mess with tryin to jump it.

HD2 Died - Power Problem

Thats right.. last night i left my Leo charging, today when i woke up i noticed that the battery level was very low so.. i unplugged it and plugged it again, noticed that the orange led wasnt lighting up, neither was the phone charging.
The phone gets very very very hot when plugged to charger or USB port on my computer and does not charge at all.
Tried it all, left it all day long with the battery out of the phone, tried charging without it in.. and nothing..it just gets very hot where the connectors (pins) make contact with the battery.
Now im trying to charge the battery on a cradle to flash it with stock rom and SPL to get it to warranty..
Any of you guys has any thoughts?
I see i posted in the wrong section.
Thank u mod
Do you always charge via usb into pc? Is your cradle plugged into the wall or pc? I don't know if you have done this, probably so, but check in windows settings->system->Power and inside the battery tab see if the "When phone is on, do not charge the battery when connected to a PC" is checked.

Yeah.. it crossed my mind to check for it, and that option is unchecked.
Though the charging "orange" led doesnt turn on even if the phone is off.
I usually charge it via usb->pc, allthough i tested with the wall charger and nothing.
I suspect it must have been a power surge that burnt in some way the PBC of the "charging module..thing"
Thanks for the suggestion
i'd check that none of the pins for the battery are in contact with each other if there is heat in that area.
Ok, I'm assuming then that the phone works, but just has low battery at the moment. If that's the case then it doesn't appear to be the battery or the leads. Any chance it's the cable? That of course assumes your using the same one with the cradle. I ask because my device didn't come with a wall charger, just a usb cable so I had to get a few extra plus a wall plug-in with a usb port.

Weird, but unfortunately it didn't. I think being in the US and getting the device from Telstra in Australia may be why I didn't. Well, if it is a hardware problem and you can't get it to charge from the device, I believe you can get a cradle that will allow you to charge the battery independant of the phone. I know it's not the best option on the planet, but it would get your battery where it needs to be to flash and confirm whether or not it's a charging issue with the battery itself.
Come to think of it, this did happen to me several weeks ago. I plugged the phone in before bed as usual and noticed the charging light didn't go on and the battery drained overnight from about 60% to 15%, which it shouldn't have done. Not in standby at least. Soft-reset the next day fixed it. It hasn't done it since. I was installing a bunch of things that evening, which may have been what did it.
