Vario screen crashes / goes white - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

Have just sent my 3rd Vario back to T-Mobile with this fault, and think I will be getting another brand new handset back in the post, but not convinced it is fixing the fault.
When I use the phone for texting or making calls or any function, the screen appears to crash as while lines appear on one side of the screen, and slowly spread over the screen making it not respond to the touch - even if I could see what was there.
A click of the power button bring the screen back OK sometimes, but often have to do this many times or pull the battery out.
Have I just had duff handsets??

are you overclocking? when did it start? what rom, software, programs are you running? etc

Alas I can only answer a few of the questions as the pone is away being repaired / swapped out, but I am not overclocking, the ROM is what it came with 3 weeks ago from T Mobile, I had installed the Skype s/ware but have not run in more than once, and it certainly was not running when this fault occurs.
The fault appears 5 or so times a day, in differing forms of severity.

I don't use skype myself, so I don't know how it runs in the background. but I think you need to overclock to get it to work well, or use the newer made-for-slow-devices version. other than that, i find sometimes i try out a new app and this problem occurs (even if others use it with no problems). I don't know if it's possible to have a combination of progs/apps which will cause this? but the fact that this is your third occurrence definitely suggests a user created fault of some sort, what other software do you use?

I use Messenger a lot on it, but apart from Skype have not installed any other software - it is all as it comes out the box.

does this happen before you install skype? try the version for ppc with slow processors

Yes it did happen before Skype, and am using the version you mentioned.

i'm only aware of this happening with extreme overclocking, and bad software. so, sorry but i'm out of ideas. when you get it back hard reset and don't install the extended rom, see if that helps, if you've not added much to it it may be a problem with the hardware (assuming they keep sending you the same unit).
I don't think many people run a stock setting and use this site, but hopefully someone else will have had a similar problem and help...

Universal is perfect, third-party apps cause the problems

At this forum and at others I have been told the following by Universal users:
- The Universal is the most stable WM device to date
- All the faults reported are caused by poor WM5 third-party apps
I must say having used many many Palm OS and Symbian devices I have never seen third-party apps cause as many problems as those posted here.
What do you think? Should WM protect the main OS functions from faulty third-party apps?
Some of you might get annoyed that I am grinding over the same problem over and over again i.e. the SMS freezing problem.
However after I had sold my 1st Jasjar due to the SMS freezing problem and got a second brand new unit, I was specially sensitive to this issue and so thoroughly tested it right out of the box without installing any 3rd party software. And there it was !!! It froze again. This was followed by several hard resets and even changing the ROM to that of the XDA but to no avail.
I am wondering if various issues being reported with the Universal are really related to 3rd party software or is it a problem of WM5. Maybe some are but others definitely not.
Kind Regards
@srmz,
I had the same problem with my JJ and I replaced it with an XDA Exec, which was okay until I re-intalled the ROM!
I am annoyed that many people here believe we don't have problems or we are so incompetent that we must be causing the problems to occur. My issue is that if we don't accept there are problems and report them they will never get fixed!

I’ve been reading about this SMS freezing on various forums and luckily I don’t have that kind of problem, but here is a hint: what about the SIM card of your operator? Did you try changing that one? Since you have done all possible things to resolve the problem I don’t think that it will be a problem for you to try another SIM, no? At least I would have done that…
Please let me know if this was of any help…
Thanks Zormic for your concern and suggestion.
I have already tried SIM from two operators than the one I normally use. I therefore believe this is not operator related.
Thanks and Kind Regards

I don't think anyone has said that WM5 is COMPLETELY bug-free? Surely no-one would be bold enough to make such a statement!?!
However, certainly in my experience this is the most stable PPC I've ever owned. I sympathise with your SMS problem, but as I and many others have never experienced this, I'm afraid that a) I'm completely stumped for a fix, as you've already tried what I would suggest, and b) I doubt if this is an inherant WM5 problem, it's possibly due to some ExtROM add-in?
(Of course, it may actually be a bug in WM5 that only occurs in certain circumstances....useless, aren't I!? )
@sub69
no has said that WM5 is bug free, but lots of posters here and elsewhere claim that the problems users are reporting are to do with third-party apps. My point is this cannot be the case for all faults and we should look elsewhere for the source of problems. For example, as I have said before my Exec was stable (let me repeat, stable) until I was foolish enough to use the O2 ROM. So my Exec was less stable because I stopped using the factory shipped ROM. This should start to give us a hint - for example.
Also many users have reoported poor quality of the camera unit (dead pixels), well my camera app caused my unit to overheat if I left it running. A pattern emerges...the cheap camera hardware perhaps?
try this...
sorry for my por english...
i had the same sms freezing probleme on my qtek V1640 (SFR's version of the 9000)
then i read this post and i try...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=193215#193215
i don't know exactly why, but it works fine now, since i install spb and is plug in today... no more freeze!
about the third party apps, i think that the operators's plug in today is not optimize for this machine... the 9000 is perfect, WM5 is not so bad, but the pluging is bad...
@dojparis
but old JJ was SIM free and it did freeze on SMS receipt so can't be an operator plug-in
And thanks for the tip
and the other possibility is that its not WM5 and its a universal hardware problem ....
This is due to 3 party software, in case you don't know, your Exec or Jasjar is using a highly customized version of rom which is not original or as clean as dopod900. Thats explain why dopod900 is way more stable than Exec/Jasjar. O2/I-mate might have messed up the rom.
In fact, my friend's Dopod900 and my running perfectly well without any problem that you all mentioned here.

New Sprint Rom Is Here ???

New sprint rom?? http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=10293&page=3
http://download.america.htc.com/RUU_...PL106_Ship.exe
It's been confirmed. That is the new official ROM for Sprint. It fixes the Bluetooth issues among others. No Rev. A or GPS of course, but that was expected.
question is, is this really "better" than the alltel rom that has been available for a long time already over at PPCgeeks...
The alltel rom fixed the BT and alarm problem as well. I'm excited to see that Sprint finally caught up, but I'm wondering if this is better than the setup I currently have.
Well I for one am happy and upset.. I would like to see REV A , as I need the faster upload speeds for sending big files from my 4gb micro sd.
I havent tried the Alltel rom, but the new sprint rom fixes the keyboard lag + wm6 responsiveness problems.
After reading all of the threads over at PPCGeeks, it seems like there are some mixed results on the ROM (to be expected I guess, you can't appease everyone.)
-Most are reporting the BT fix worked correctly.
-I didn't see anyone say that the Alarm fix didn't work
-People are reporting that the OS seems a little faster and better at managing memory, such as reclaiming more when you close an app, etc.
-The radio version on the Sprint ROM is 1.47, compared to 1.40 of the Alltel, some were reporting better reception between this one and the stock rom (1.32 I believe)
-the most widely spread issue I saw was that some users were having issues with their dpad not working. At first, someone pinned it down to sprinttv, as it worked after they removed it, but then others said that the problem returned.
-YMMV, but some reported that when they skipped the sprint customization of the rom (when it starts initially, after the 3 second delay where you can soft reset) it caused issues on their phone. One person said that a workaround for this was to let it install EVERYTHING initially, and then do a hard reset and skip the customization process. It makes sense that if it were something with the EXTRom that it might put something in there that you needed, but again, not sure on this one.
-I can't believe how many people were stuck on the idea that they would be able to use Sprite Backup or SPB Backup to restore all of their stuff. Let me say this again, because I don't think it can be said enough. Unless you are just restoring folders such as your documents or something non-system related, you CANNOT use these programs. You WILL overwrite the new files with the old ones, causing a boatload of issues, if it even works at all. So don't do it, or you will cause yourself some headaches. Activesync remembers the apps you have installed, so just sync afterwards and click the boxes. For your other stuff such as contacts, back those up with a contact backup app or sync with outlook if you've got it.
just my two cents.

Just to clarify this is part. A hard reset will completely erase any carrier customizations there is absolutely no reason for installing extrom, hard resetting then skipping. Just start out with the hard reset, skip customizations and you'll be good to go.
Although there are still the other bugs with the update =)
Just installed it a while ago, skipped the sprint customizations, everything seems to be running good and actually noticeably quicker than before. New startup screen is cool too, no problems thus far =)
do yourself a favor and wait for the next rom. If you didn't already experiance it, your device will lock up and go to sleep requiring a soft reset...very unusable. and BT will turn off after a few minutes randomly.
load the colonel's rom on, it's much better imho
Seems to only happen to some people though. I have had my phone on pretty much straight since the rom update.
there seems to be a major bluetooth issue where the BT just shuts off periodically.. Not sure how,but they found a way to make bluetooth even worse!
I can't carry on a conversation without BT shutting off on me.. (or use the gps without it shutting off/etc..)

I haven't updated yet, plan to over the weekend, but I would suggest anyone having problems to stop and consider their setup first...
1. What programs are installed that could cause problems?
2. What registry hacks have been done that may cause problems?
3. What configuration settings might need reset that may cause problems?
For example, after a hard reset, Enhanced Network over USB is enabled by default, and this often causes Active Sync to have issues. Likewise, power management tweaks will have reverted to defaults and you may like a more finely tuned setup.
As for memory leaks being better/worse, you may have programs installed that are out of date/buggy.
I realize it's easier to jump on the "this sucks" bandwagon, but it doesn't help you or other users with legitimate problems when no consideration is given to what is causing a given problem.
These situations are precisely why the instructions tell you that EVERYTHING will be erased. This is a good thing since it forces you to clean house, but it also means you have to pay attention to those things you often neglect or may have changed ages ago and forgotten.
Finally, if all else fails, try the ROM update again. Sometimes things go wrong.
Sorry if this seems like a rant, I just want people having issues to place blame where it truly belongs. After considering these matters, if you still have problems, definitely let HTC and the rest of us know.
Best Regards,
Aaron

My experience is as simple and "vanilla" as it gets:
-Loaded new ROM
-Hard reset
-Stopped customizations
-Installed NO apps, did not turn on BT, made no calls, did nothing else
-3 DSODs in 4 hours
-Did a second flash (from a second computer with a freshly downloaded ROM)
-Hard reset
-Allowed customizations to run
-Again no apps, BT or calls
-DSOD within an hour

Sounds atypical to me, given that most users are updating without issue and experiencing better results. I have no reason to doubt your experience though... it sounds like you have faulty hardware, but here's a download link to the previous firmware if you're interested in trying it out first:
http://www.htcamerica.net/support/mogul/software-downloads.html
No, "most" users are not experiencing better results. I've been using this ROM with poor results, as have many others. Read this thread for many sad tales of woe:
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=10302
Basically, the new ROM does fix a bunch of things, but breaks others, so I would not recommend installing this ROM.
1) Locks up when changing from Sprint to roaming. You can test this by manually switching from Sprint to roaming and back a few times, you WILL get a phone lockup.
2) BT turns off randomly for many users.
3) Turn on BT, let unit sit for a few minutes until it goes to sleep, turn unit back on, dpad no longer works. I have seen this myself many times.
Don't install this update --- use the Alltel ROM or wait for another update.

1) You're incorrect in stating that most users have no problems, etc. Some do, some don't. Read the posts at ppcgeeks, pdaphonehome, BAW, hofo. I am not at all alone in having problems.
2) I downgraded 2 days ago, and my Mogul runs fine again - just exactly like it did for the 1st 3 months I had it. It's not my hardware! It's a bad ROM release.
Not everyone uses the phone in the same way at all. So of course some people will not see the same problems that others do.
If you never use Bluetooth and never roam, then this ROM will work for you. Otherwise, it will cause problems. For me, Bluetooth works much better in 2.09, and I rarely if ever see lockups as I have with 2.16. So, I'm going with 2.09 for now. The alarm problem IS fixed in 2.16 but I never use alarms on my phone so it's not an issue for me. Freezes when roaming ARE a problem.

Can't pick up the phone! Anyone else?

Well, thats it, I actually can't pick up my phone when I get a call. I can push the green pick up button as many times as I want, but it wont respond, and I end up having to call people back. Anyone else with this issue? (phone info in sig)
I am only going to take a guess and say that you have a lot of programs that run in the background.
Maybe try not using auto rotate.
I agree with Neobbs although when I first read the subject, I thought maybe you needed to work out more....
Same problem here. I can have the phone in my hands looking at it straight up when the phone rings and the phone goes black for about 5 seconds (or about 2 rings) and then the caller id comes up and I start hitting the call/talk button to answer. It goes to VM eventually and me hitting the green button ends up bringing up the recent call list. Auto rotate is disabled, but I do have weatherbug, open home, caller lookup and IM running in the background. Oh... and I have the transistions/animations enabled. That's all i can think of. I'll try removing the caller lookup app to see if it eliminates the problem.

I think it's a good, fair and valid question.
Do you have installed a customer ring tone ? if yes, choose original ring tone and try again.
I had the same problem when I started using my phone. I dunno what changed but the prob. has disappeared or I got used to hold the pickup button down for a bit longer automatically. I got the feeling that this helped the issue.
My phone is RC33 not rooted... and to answer you question: I've tried but I'm still fighting with my XP to accept the USB driver.
Guess again!

mine does the same randomly. Straight after a factory reset.
nothing installed, and my G1 is not rooted (yet).
has anyone found a solution for this problem?
Using RC33 with weatherbug running in the background, but it occurs with it installed and without it installed
I swear, the G1 must be the worst phone ive ever used

Yep, must be terrible if about 4 or 5 people have this problem out of the thousands who have bought it....
I've never had any of these problems, but im guessing they're (probably) firmware related.

most probably just call back and arent bothered to find out how to fix it on xda
anyways, when you say firmware related, what did you mean?
I installed JF 1.42, and before that, his earlier versions, and way before that my phone started out with RC18, which I then rooted. Would it be linked to that? I've wiped my phone like a dozen times, but the problem is reoccurring perhaps once or twice a day, out of about 30 phone calls a day
additionally, although this may be linked to t-mobiles ****ty service, have you guys noticed a large increase in dropped calls?
I use my phone in both austin tx and houston, and in both locations, about every 10 calls is dropped, I dont know if its just the horrible service they have, or when I move from a location with 3g to edge.
With the new radio, the dropped calls have reduced in number, but still occur randomly
Also, one more thing, and a little off topic, but this has been bothering me,
Is there anyone to get a SMS application that allows me to type using a numpad or something similar on the screen? or at least, have spell correct, cause chompsms' keyboard is way too small to use one handed and still have legible messages, unlike the iphone where the errors would be auto corrected

I'm in austin, tx too and I also get the black screen of death almost every time I get an incomming call so maybe it is a location based thing? My g1 is rooted and I have over 70 apps installed and I'm not about to uninstall them 1 by 1 to see which one could be causing it. In the past, rings extended was said to be the one causing the problem but I don't have that installed.
Also, there have been enough requests for t9 and auto correct with chomp, I'm sure it will be in the upcomming updates
Im running Haykuro now and haven't had a single incident so far. Also, I have 73 (yes, seventy-three) MB of free system memory as I moved pretty much EVERYTHING to the SD card. In return, my phone is unable to boot without my SD card... which is a bit strange.

Problems with my hd2 - Help Please

So basically, my hd2 is not running smooth at all. Every time i do a rom update and then restore my contacts/messages/settings it keeps getting frozen and unresponsive. So I have to restart the device, but I don't know why it should be restarted anyway, isn't is kind of super fast?!?! So, now, when I recently updated my ROM, the device is so damn slow, that even after typing my PIN it takes a minute to launch htc sense and everything. When I'm moving through the tabs it's so damn laggy i can't stand it. . Is anyone else experiencing this????
To be honest, and I'm no expert, it sounds like you have some serious phone problems, probably out of your control. Not to sound like a pessimist but given how everyone else seems to be ok with the HD2, could be either a major rom/radio problem or hardware failure??
I've updated my hd2 using the official rom from HTC and, apart from the occasional lag i get from WinMo, my device runs sweet as a a proverbial nut. Especially as I have run the tweaks suggested by the forums here.
Given that you have said that you've upgraded the ROM and it's made no difference, the only thing i could suggest is possibly send it back under warranty?
Obviously, I'd wait and see if someone with more know-how has a better explanation, i'm merely giving you my POV.
Hope you get this sorted ASAP. A properly working HD2 is a marvellous thing.
All the best
To the OP,
There could be so many causes for your problems. I would start as follows:
- Take your SD card out and see if the phone boots and is not laggy with the card out
- If this does not work take a look at the SMS threads on here and see if the solutions there help you
- If no joy then read the Hints @ Tips thread on here, if you have not already done so, and pickup on the cache move tips, using the task manager to close open files, etc
- I that fails look for the thread "HD2 Died - or did it" and implement the solutions in there
- If that does not help and you have been flashing a fair few roms then hop over to the MTTY thread in rom development and see if that helps.
Plenty to be getting on with.
Hope you get it sorted.

My power up to sense loaded time = 55 secs.
Any different?
thanks for this quick reply. I am using Energy Leo ROM, but I don't think this could be the problem, or is it? Because I have performed a hard-reset now and it's running quite smooth again.. But the question is for how long.
Two questions I have now:
-does it happen to anyone, when you try to wake up the phone, screen doesn't wake up, only the keys in the bottom start to glow? It happened to me from time to time
-does anyone else experience missed key taps? When I tap something from time to time it just doesn't get recognized so I have to "retap" it...

I have experienced question 1 and 2.. however not alot or not frequent.. I tend to think that this is just a computer and computers do crash depending on whats going on.. The missed screen taps only happens once or twice when its playing up. I do have a screen protector on though so whether the dust, oil or screen protector is causing that is a different story, but isnt a big problem for me to remove the screen protector to find out.
so, the latest problem.. my hd2 had been running for ~16 hours without any problem now, but in last 10 minutes i had to restart it twice, because the screen stopped responding after i wanted to type new sms in a conversation (first time) and after i had a pop-up message about new sms (second time). As said before, I'm using energy rom, latest issue (17.2.). Could the problem be, in fact connected with this rom or specifically with sms software?
using cooked roms you can generally expect a few lockups and restarts.
Also, the screen not powering up, just the hard keys backlight is an issue across the board, from custom roms to official roms. Some roms seem to do it, some don't, but one that doesn't do it to me might well do it to you.

It has been mentioned before that if you have a large number of texts stored, it will take a while for it to allow you to reply to a text. (It has to go through the database, check for the texts sent by the user, then arrange them alongside the ones sent to them by you, then put them in chronological order, then display them, this takes time)
but i would presume the device should be working anyway (but slower, of course) and not flashing the display and being "frozen" ?
The frozen issue with texts is all in the SMS thread I pointed you to earlier. Solutions to the phone freezing are in the HD2 Died thread, again as I pointed out earlier.
How many of these potential solutions have you tried? Tryy these things first then come back if they don't work rather than make assumptions about your ROM.

after 3 months i still have the issue with missed strokes.. even after the latest energy rom update :\
anyone?

[Q] What does it mean when HD2 hangs on startup?

I am not sure if this has to do with using Android or not, but sometimes my HD2 decides to reboot itself unexpectedly, on WM as well as on Android and I can't really find what's causing it.
But what happens is, after switching itself off, it switches itself on again and hangs on the HTC logo, sometimes with or without the following info:
R 2.10.50.28_2
G 15.40.50.07U
D 1.66.76641
I am using stock ROM that came with it, i assumed it will be stable by itself but it reboots itself randomly sometimes just like on Android.
Does it have to do with the Radio version (i changed it from 2.07.xx). I tried 2.12.xx before and had same problems.
I should note that the only way for it to run again is to remove the battery for a while and then put it back. If i remove it and put it back briefly it will still hang.
Anyone is familiar with this strange behavior?
Thanks
ME too
I have the EXACT same problem. It only started for me after using android. now whenever i run Android it will unexpectedly reboot and sometimes hang like yours. It also does it in WM though not as often. I was able to notice it might have something to do with data connections bc if i run android but only use wifi it seems to be fine. I tried changing Radios WM ROMs and Android builds i even hardspled my phone again but nothing solved it. The problem needs to be talked about more. it got so bad for me I bought a Desire and gave up on my HD2 for the moment. Keep this thread up.
sounds like i have to follow
I hope not!
I notice if i do heavy download on wm or android i get it. But it could be that the phone is too hot? But it's not alarmingly hot tbh.
I hope more people can shed light on this.
Thanks for your input.
Yeah this is what seems to happen to me too, i start a downlogsd it gets a bit warm then freezes or reboots and gets stuck. However it doesnt even have to be a large download for me, a simple cab file or youtube video sometimes. And as far as heat, this never used to be a problem and i know for a fact my phone used to heat up way more before without a problem.
Maybe the qualcomm chipset go in "safe mode"..i remember that for first start tickle the orange led and after the device freeze or restart..maybe your device overheat. Try to touch cover's device or install a battery status monitor software. If you have changed radio, return on the original status. In case the restart happen always, make a backup using Pimbackup, and do an Hard Reset. For first try to use the telephone without the memory card and test the stabilty. If is all ok, you have to provide to format your SD card in Fat32. Try also to change the HSPL with the original SPL.

Forums Restored from Backups - LOST DATA - PLEASE READ
As many of you may have heard, we underwent routine maintenance on our Database Server. Upon rebooting the Database Server, it refused to boot and all indications are that the RAID 10 (what is RAID? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAID) array failed.
We have restored the Forums from a 24 hour old backup. We know this is not ideal, but at this point, the chances of recovering the failed array are slim.
We sincerely apologize for this. In fact, this maintenance was intended to boost the redundancy of our database setup and lightening strike.

Thabks. Back to the subject, today i tried downloading on wifi a 150mb file on android and it rebooted byitself.
Then i tried to play a wmv video file on WM stock ROM and after 6 min it rebooted.
So its starting to look more and more like cpu/heat problem, anyone having these issues?
So does anyone think this might have something to do with all the overclocking in those android builds we've been using?
After 45 mins of install HD2 still hanging?
Hi, I just installed FroyoSense by darkstone
Release date: 07.AUG.2010
I don't know if this is the latest (probably not) but after 45 minutes of install the screen has in the top left hand corner tiny small text (excuse my lack of knowledge here) but no scrolling text as I expected, its now like 50 minutes, how long should it take?
Any help please would be appreciated, thanks
John
New to the HD2
So, I just bought a used HD2 a week ago. It was having similar problems in WM. I took it to a local store, and they said that is just how WM phones are. I've flashed HSPL and different radios and ROMs, installed Android, but still have trouble with freezing and rebooting on it's own no matter what I do. IT happens the same in WM or Android. Is there any way to find out if these might be due to hardware problems caused by the previous owner?
I got the same problem, when I do a lot of things on the same time on the HD2 it hangs or reboot. During de restart of the phone it hangs on the White screen with HTC on it. I have te take the battery out of it en than reboot again.
When I listen music and Internet the same time it almost always happends.
It happends on WM but also on Android, I tryed different ROM's and Radio Version's but nothing worked. Also tryed to work without SD-card, but still the same problem.
So I have no idea how to solve the problem...
I hope someone now's how to solve it...
Sorry for my bad English but I hope it's clear

Ok having waited for 2 hrs, I shutdown and installed FroyoStone v2, this time the tiny text appeared and faded after about 5 -10 seconds and the screen has gone blank, is this normal? No scrolling text, nothing, I going tpo re-boot and will keep you updated. Thx
If you read the previous posts you would know this thread has nothing to do with the problem youre describing. I understand the confusion of the title but pls read the thread first.

Your problem is unrelated to this thread.
So far we have more and more people having the related issue on WM and Android. We need some expert to help us pinpoint the problem.

i have the same issues.
I can add also playing videos for longerthan 5-10min would make the phone reboot too weither its WM or android.
Today I was in the Store where I bought mine HTC HD2, because I was sick off it. They told me that is was a familiar problem with the HTC HD2. They also would repair it free for me. I didn't do it yet because first I have to delete my HSPL etc.
I asked them also what the would repair to solve te problem, he told me: the will do a complete bodyswap. So everything will be renewed, exept the tochscreen and front.
So I guess it is a real and serious hardware problem....
Why we dont hear people conplaining about it if its comon?
I find that very odd.
Someone could try PMing one of the devs in the forum and linking them to this thread to see if they could shed some insight or at least bring more attention to the issue.
Well I live in the Netherlands and on the Dutch HTC HD2 forum, I heard some people complaining about it. But the salesman of the store said that it is a familiar problem, so that sounds to me like a regular problem. But indeed it's weird we doesn't hear more people complaining.
Maybe the most of the people think is normal with WM, but I am really sick of it...
