Hey all, I had a problem with my screen tapping itself and got a replacement today.
On this one there is no Task Manager in the programs menu.
Anyone know why? and more so, where can i get it or something that does the same job.
Thanks
JAmes
James, what do you want your task manager to do?
There are a number that might fit the bill!
V
Start > Settings > Memory and there's a tab with your running programs.
Now not to be too off-topic, when I was delving into the registry I found a key which I wondered what it did. Perhaps there's a latent shortcut out there???
HKLM>HARDWARE>DEVICEMAP>KEYBD> (D) TaskManVKey = 46
Looks like a taskmanager maybes???
Anyone know what this does?
Joe
Thanks for the reply.
Want it to close programs properly. I could do this through the start>setting>memory method. But i like that i could just go Start>TM and close things.
I tried magic button for a while, never really took to it. Still getting the Hang of the who PDA thing and its easiest if its just the windows programs, then i can see why I should be using the other ones

I also just realised that there is no battery info on the Today/Items screen.
recon something funny is going on?
should i hard reset?

James,
Consider using a program like SmallMenu when you're more familiar with the device. I highly recommend it, and it has a task manager of sorts built in.
There are various freeware or cheap task managers around.
If you want to try something entirely unobtrusive, you can try my program called VJOkButt.

James, I have no particular experience with the O2 files, but I wonder if this is an O2 file. Have a quick shufty over here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=37909&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=age
Is that the same thing you're after?
V
That helps. Looks like the wee bells and whistles are only on the Basic install type instead of corporate. Might have to revert back to it, i just liked it begin a bit cleaner.
Thanks again
JAmes
James, if you're planning to revert to the O2 stuff, investigate the "extended rom" and then you can pick and choose the bits you want to install, instead of all the unnecessary gloop.
V
I plan on doing that as soon as I can be bothered
I've been reading through alot of the posts on it for the last week or so and shall give it a bash.
Thanks
JAmes
Vijay - is that reg entry I posted a hidden shortcut to the task manager?
Many thanks,
Joe
joebongo: I don't know if you've been reading about my attempts to hack the hardware keys on the universal, VJElectrify, but I came across these keys a couple of days ago. Searching the net, I can't find anything definitive on them, and hope someone else can help. The only thing I found that seems half relevant is this:
Code:
When the user presses the CTRL+ALT+END key combination, the Windows Thin Client Shell brings the shell UI to the foreground. To configure this key combination, set the following registry entries.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP\KEYBD]
"DriverName"="Kbdmouse.dll"
"CalVKey"=DWORD:0
"ContLessVKey"=DWORD:0
"ContMoreVKey"=DWORD:0
"TaskManVKey"=DWORD:23
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/d...wce50conconfigurescreensaversinthinclient.asp
That seems to be a very bizarre place to put such an entry, but I can't find any other informative references. I don't imagine it does much, but the entry isn't mirrored on the PC so it's not vestigial AFAIK.
V
o2 do still install the Task Manager, even with their latest ROM, so perhaps your returned device has been configured in Corporate mode, rather than Basic mode.
If the o2 stuff has been installed from extended ROM, you'll find a folder:
"\Windows\Mobile Solutions\O2ActiveUI\Modules\TaskManager"
containing Task Manager. Other folders under ..\Modules\.. have the rest of o2's customisation.
o2's Battery icon is launched from the "\Windows\Startup\" folder, but you can instead enable the "standard" battery icon (next to the "radio button" icon) with a registry hack:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Services\Power]
"ShowIcon"=dword:00000001
Hi Guys,
I just got my Jamin a few days ago and have hard reset it more times than I care to remember. There are a few things that irritate me that hopefully you guys can clear up for me.
Firstly, how do I switch off the recent programs section of the start menu?
Also, how do I clear recent searches and Terminal Service information?
Thanks,
DB
Ok... so this might not be the most complex of questions for you guys to answer... but someone MUST know... And the same for the dictionary... where's that located?
Both entries are in the registry. Both require you to perform a reset afterwards. You can not turn off the recently used programs list (stupid M$, I know!) but you can clear it. Attached is a CAB file that should clear the recently used list (make sure it is read only so it doesn't get deleted after you run it). It is meant for WM2003SE but I think it should work for WM5; you may just have to change the Max OS Version using WinCE CAB Manager. For the Terminal Services Client list, you will have to search the registry fo the IP/server name and then delete it manually.

Thanks Mate,
I appreciate the help
What app do I use to regedit? Obviously Start >Run - regedt32 doesn't work! haha
EDIT: Call me blind... but where's the attachment!? Haha
Yea, good point where is the attachment? This is the 2nd time this is happening to me on this forums in one day! The file upload keeps timing out, so I'm just going to tell you the Registry change you have to make and you will have to use WinCE CAB Manager to make your own cab file:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shell\TaskSwitch]
"0"=""
"1"=""
"10"=""
"11"=""
"2"=""
"3"=""
"4"=""
"5"=""
"6"=""
"7"=""
"8"=""
"9"=""
Use PHM Registry Editor or trial version of Resco Explorer 2005. Both should be on Pocketgear.com or try google. Depending on your Registry editor you may have to exclude the speech marks.
Hope it helps
VJEschaton has a command line to clear the recent menu. However, the OS still requires you to soft reset. Defeats the point IMHO.

I guys,
I have this doubt floating in my mind since some time...
If I run all sktools regarding cleaning and registry optimization, such as:
-Clean!
-Optimize!
-Tune Up!
-Invalid Registry Entries
-Invalid Registry Values
-Advanced Clean
-Registry Optimizer
Can it happen that it will wrongly detect some tweaks or corrections made by the cookers as errors in the registry and then eliminate them?
For example, if a cooker changes a value in the registry key to optimize something, Sktools can "think" that it's an error, and then change the key to it's default value, eliminating the optimization done by the cooker...
Is this possible to happen? Or can I use safely the tools from SKtools?
Thankx
I would recommend against using anything like that as it is possible your remove keys that make your rom unstable. Advice is install and stay as you are!

What???
Off course errors/mistakes could happen, but I think that some registry tool is very needed, specially in Windows mobile...
I'm not sure but when this kind of tools search the registry, they only seek for errors in the connections or links.
So I don't think they will delete any tweaks done by the cooker if the tweak is working good.
I use this software to clean up,remove stuff,optimize,tweaks etc... and I have never had any issues whatsoever,if you ask me it works like a charm that´s why I bought it and my xda is really stable all the time.
These are the features I use the most.
-Clean!
-Optimize!
-Tune Up!
-Advanced Clean
-Registry Optimizer
Once I flash I use "Tune up" to change the PIE cache location,cookies,history,messaging files etc....after this "optimize" for better perfomance/stability/memory it´s up to you.Once I´ve done installing apps I use "Clean" and that´s it.
It does remove needed registry keys/values, can't give a specific example tho, you better examine the list of items to be deleted one by one before actually deleting them completely.
The only thing I use from SKTools is FreeRAM.
Sorry.
To me looks like it works well.....I´m sure it´s my lack of knowledge,but when I set it up that way with sktools and it seems to work so well,that´s why I mentioned that.
So..... I've just installed a new rom, an before installing anything else, I installed SKtools, and made a search for Invalid Registry Entries, and it found a couple of them (around 6 or 7).
Is it possible that a ROM is cooked with registry errors already inside?...Or could it be that SKtools is not that reliable...?
And, should I delete those registry strings or not?
Bye
So, no comments/thoughts about this???....
Strange....

You better not delete any registry entries untill or unless you know what it's for. Say for example, if you see that these are coming from a programme that you have uninstalled from your phone, you can close your eyes and delete those. Even that also sometime is bad because, lot of them may be shared with other system stuffs.
I have found some blank registry entries and deleted them, later when I have rebooted the trinity, I had some strange errors(I forgot). Anyway, it don't bring any gains in cleaning registries for fast booting of system, but temporary locations or IE cache to increase your available memory yes.
The basic purpose of a registry cleaning(applicable for pc also!) is that , if there is any error message after booting up your system, or some special errors coming from a particular programme after it launches(depends on the message it gives!) , in that case, it could have been good to run those kind of registry cleaner stuffs.
So you can leave them.
I agree with Provat,
I would say that you have to be aware about what you want to remove.
I use SKtoll too but now I must be careful on what I do with that because on the past I have removed lot of things and the only solution was hard reset.
Nevertheless it's a good tool and it improves a lot. Personnaly, I only use "optimize for performance" option.
Is there a Cab for this ?

Google is your friend :
http://s-k-tools.com/index.html?sktools/m_feat.html
Please, could someone tell me how can I find in SK Tools the FreeUP RAM and Optimize for Performance parts?
thanks
I used SKtools to uninstall Google Maps and didn't scroll thru the results as I usually do. It virtually left my memory card void. All I had left was a shell of a rom...none of the shortcuts worked...all my files were gone. I had to use a recovery program to get most of it back...I still ain't right. I wanted to use their cleaning tool...it came back with so many results and I thought about what happened and just canceled it. I'll stick Memmaid unless someone can tell me the proper cleaner settings for SKtools.
Hi all , I need a help
How can I stop listing my recently opened documents??
actually, it is annoying !!! I hope your help friend
by the way, I use appl SKTools 4.21 to clear the list ..... but it is some thing bothering me ....
Thanx in advance for all
if your talking about the recent programs list in the start menu...theres a program called startclean, that clears the list every time you reboot, other than that, i dont know....
theres a link for the startclean.exe somewhere in the forums
the program wisbar advance allows you to not show the recent apps list at all. Its a cool little launcher program that I quite like and have used for a while. I'm trying out Ultimate launcher at the moment but like wisbar more. It is a commercial program but the benefits far outweigh the cost. There is a trial but I'm not sure for how long. Hope this helps.

It won't stop them getting listed as you use them but whenever StartClean (tiny wee cab, lots of copies of it posted around here) will make sure your start menu is clean whenevr you soft reset.
(I cook it into my ROMs every time, so useful).

Sorted....
As I said, Wisbar Advance 3 (for WM06) allows you to NOT SHOW recently used apps. It is part of the settings where you can pick if you want "help", "find", "desktop", "favourites" and recent settings" by ticking/unticking a box. You can also change the indicators across the top and their order. I would suggest this if you dont want to be troubled by "Recent Items" again... Cheers

Mm, I'm pretty sure that this or another app would be the only way to do that and ultramag69's suggestion of Wisbar Advance is probably the most popular option.
Other than that (if you don't want that running - it does do a lot of otyher, clever thigs you might also find yuo enjoy though) I think you'll have to search about, probably with Google or your own perferred search engine. there's probably some freeware aruond to do that task only and therefore be 'smaller' I'd have thought. StartClean does me as I do like to have the programs I just launched sat there but not on boot-up.
Hi,
Found this link. Haven't tried it yet to see if it just removes them temporarily or stops it from listing them, but worth a shot.
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.pocketpc/browse_thread/thread/d4537c1a66a31057
Let me know how it works
Disregard
Got Home and tried it and on mine under WM6 it doesn't work. Will keep looking.
This is really a general WM6 question, but I have a XV6800 so i thought I would post it here.
How do you disable the recent applications/history in your start menu? All I want in the start menu, EVER, is the programs I have checked off in the Start Menu Settings section, and I never want it to keep a list of recently opened applications.
Also, how do you get rid of the "7" programs limit in the start menu? I need like 9 or 10 there (plus they will fit just fine on the home screen since I am disabling recent aplications)
Thanks.
i would recommend getting a start bar replacement like wisbar, that will let you do a lot more customizing. its what i use and i love it.
nope, i need registry tweak/hacks on how to do it. i am not going to install more ram-sucking software when it can be done natively in shell, i just dont know how.

Recent Programs
Hi
I have been looking for a solution for the recent program List
One solution is (i use this now) create another folder in your "windows\Start Menu\XYZ" and copy all (But 1) shortcuts from "windows\Start Menu\PROGRAMS" to "windows\Start Menu\XYZ" And your recent list wont be populated.
As for the limitation of 6 in the start Menu. I did not need to change that so i would not know if you find a solution i would like to know. And besides as other people mention yes WA is a good option.
