Is trinity 4 GB miniSD compliant? - P3600 General

Hello People,
I just bought a HTC P3600 and was wondering to purchase a 4gb mini-SD card.
I know that this topic has been treated already in other threads but after reading them all i am even more confused.
Is MobyMemory 4gb working fine?
Is 4gb TopRam working?
Which ROM should be installed to have 4gb working correctly (even after some time)?
If still not sure, can i be sure 100% that 2gb will always work?
Thanks for letting me know, i cant wait to order a 4gb!!
Giulio

Many people are reporting serious corruption problems with 4GB miniSD cards both standard and SDHC (which are not supported according to specs).
Some people are also reporting problems with 2GB cards not being accessible when the device is turned on after stand-by, but I have been using a Sandisk 2GB miniSD card for more than 4 months now and I haven't had any problems with it at all.
There was a specific thread somewhere in this forum where people reported their experiences with several types of cards. As far as I remember the Sandisk 2GB card seemed to work fine for everybody.

Well, as I've stated in other threads, my TopRam 4gb is still working without any problems in my Trinity running the Dopod Test Rom, and now also with the 1.38 radio rom upgrade. Although the SDHC variety may well be working fine with some newer roms, at the moment a standard type card seems like a safer bet. I know some have had problems with all kinds of miniSD cards, but for every complaint how many quiet happy users might there be?

No! Don't buy that crap! If you fill the card with more than about 1.5 GB, bad things happen. Files get corrupted and the card can't be read in a normal card reader. They also refuse to answer mails when you want to return the card. Bad service.

OK, interesting, so it looks like a test&try approach.
Anybody elese in the Trinity world has ever tried TopRam without problems?
If i find at least another person who has it, then i may be so brave to buy it!...

Hi there,
the sandisk 2gb seems to work fine after what we can read in the forums - but does this include the ultra II version or just the regular 2gb-card?
THx, s.

Hi,
I also tried a 4GB from MobyMemory on my HTC-P3600 with latest french Orange SPV700 ROM.
Everything was fine until for unknown reason some directories & files started to be corrupted with weird characters. Then few days after, it definitively died becoming unreadable with any kind/ brand of reader. Formatting was not able to resuscitate it.
I get in touch with MobyMemory support and they kindly & promptly accepted to RMA it. I just get refunded few days ago.
So there are some problems with 4GB miniSD devices on the Trinity but none with MobyMemory support.

I am using the regular 2GB card not the Ultra II version.

after trying a 4gb topram with bad results (corruption, etc), i'm ended to a trascend 2gb minisd now, without problems so far (in use since 4 days)

I'm using the Dopod Test Rom because people reported less problems with TomTom using this ROM. My TomTom doesn't lock up. I also have done the performance reg tweaks listed in the Wiki, this gives extra memory buffer for the system. Seriously, I have many apps installed on my TopRam card and use them daily. It has 3.2 gigabytes used with much of it being TomTom maps and ogg music files. I think that the cards may not be the problem, it could be the ROM version. Lots of people with other devices buy and use these cards all the time. I've checked other device forums.

I have a Kingston 4gb MiniSD card, after putting it in my Trinity it only has 1,9gb on it! Hope someone knows a fix or something

4GB MiniSD
It seems that whatever brand of 4GB card that is used in the Trinity it seems to lose files or becomes corrupted. It must be a phone problem.

I was using a 4GB U-Tek mini SD Card which made since the first of using a lot of problems, after a couple of days the card damaged, so I bought another 4GB mini SD Card (no-name) from a german ebayer, I use this card since 3 or 4 days with no problem!

I use a transcend 2Gb miniSd (since 2 months) and from time to time files become corrupted with weird character names, the only solution is to re-format. I also use a SanDisk 1Gb ultra II minisd and I never had problems with.
As Matterhorn said, that should be a ROM problem.
Personally I use a SPV M700:
ROM version: 1.23.73.3
Radio version: 1.29.00.01

XDA IIi SD Card problems - is this true?

This site claims that there are problems with the sd card slot in the 2i - and the symptoms that they give seem very similar to the ones I am experiencing. Can anyone confirm or deny this? And if its true is there anyway of getting around it?
Thanks
http://www.digireader.com/view_blog.asp?blog_id=208&author_id=2
as i long user of the 2i I can say without a doubt there is a problem with the sd cards as i suffered for over 3 months or more of pure frustration and almost throwing the thing away .
but in the end it was down to the sd card speed ,it doesn't really matter what size you have but it's the speed of the card at the moment i am using a 512 transcend 80X card and it has been running perfectly for the past 4 months or so without any problems .there have been plenty people who have now tried the transcend card and found it to be well 1 of the best so i would recomend you buying 1 of these asap ,if you do a google you should find a place selling 1 of these but just make sure it's has a speed of 80x or else you will have the same problems ..also if you wish to get a bigger card the 1meg works okas well
Hmm, I can't say I'm at all happy with that. I have now borrowed a 512mb card and magically all my problems disappear. its the same make and model as my 1gb card so I can't see its a brand issue.
Are o2 aware of the problem? If they are then I think they're breaking the law by continuing to sell the thing.
Does the problem exist with the 2s as well? If not I might go back to o2 and insist they swap it over...
Thanks for your reply
Hi.
I've had an XDA IIi for a few months and had lots of problems with the phone freezing (especially with tomtom 5). The problems got noticeably worse when using "turbo" mode too.
I emailed tomtom for help with navigator and the strange locking up. After a month, they replied to me and said that the pda must use 80x cards or faster... i bought an 150x 2Gb card and haven't looked back...
The phone can now do it all... i use ttn5 with traffic addon whilst driving and use pocket music to play mp3s at the same time and i'm still able to answer the phone to accept calls...
the only problem i've had with a 2Gb SD-Card is that i can ONLY read/write it in the XDA IIi - no other PDA will touch it and no card reader will recognise it.

What brand is your card?
Having already sprung for a 1Gb card I'd hate to have to spend out again becasue of inadequacies in the xda hardware... however if it was an upgrade to 2Gb I might be able to better justify it.
Perhaps this info about card speeds should be posted in the FAQ so that new users have at least some warning of the 2i's problems with SD...
mine is an "a-data" myflash 2gb from here: www.emartbuy.com
£91.65 inc VAT
hope this helps you!

I would just like to say thanks for this topic, the two problems i've had with the PDA2 (XDAIIi) since i got it earlier this year have been fixed by taking out my 60 speed 1gb sd card.

Fingers crossed for a 4Gb SD card (low speed ones)

Already 2 weeks into my O2 mini and I'm looking for a 4Gb card. I have a 2Gb card but have already loaded in a Lexipedia (concise Wikipedia), some video files, mp3s, and about 500MB reserved for photos, internet radio recording, offline web pages, and voice + phone call recording. Need more space for my VCD series so I can watch on the train.
Apparently, one store in Australia clearly stated on their website that any 2Gb High Speed cards 133X 150X will not work with the O2 Mini...yes, there are some users on this board who have got 150X cards running fine on their Magician but is not the norm.
Pretty much the Sandisk Ultra II and SanDisk normal SD card of 2G works fine on the Magician. So I'm looking for 4Gb cards that are around 60X or lower.
Checked on ebay and practically everyone's selling the Transcend and/or Adata 150X 4Gb SD cards which I doubt will work on the Magician. So hopefully in the coming months, if not sooner, Sandisk will make a normal 4Gb SD card.
There was a thread on the the accessories section a while back. Basically, if you want a sure bet, try the 4GB AData MMC (the green one, not the pink SD). A user reported that these definitely work. There are a ton selling on eBay as we speak for ~£120 inc p&p.

I second that.
Running a normal Sandisk 2GB without Problems!
Unfortunately all the 4Gb's on ebay seem to be the high capacity 150X ones (pink ones). That's why hopeful that they will release the green 60X ones
The 4GB Sandisk works with the Jam, but it doesn't work correctly with normal readers for the desktop that are out on the market right now. Sure, you can put movies and large files on the 4GB, but try putting a ton of photos and smaller files, such as map data. I found that the Sandisk 4GB version fails after a while, time and time again. My 2 GB Sandisk works flawlessly. Fortunately for me, my retailer off eBay has refunded my payment and I am sending his card back.
Hi gadgetman901,
Very curious as to how you managed to get your hands on a Sandisk 4Gb when there is no info about it on the Sandisk official website. Tried to search on ebay for it but the only 4Gb cards that showed up was an Ultra II that looks exactly like a Sandisk but is not a Sandisk brand.

It was on eBay a few weeks ago. The reseller does not have them listed on eBay right now. I called Sandisk when I first got it, and was having trouble formatting it with my laptop and desktop. They said that it was a counterfeit, but the reseller told me that he got them from Asia where they just were released. Regardless, the 4 GB showed up on my PPC and Desktop as 3.78 GB FAT32; however after copying my files from my 2GB to the 4GB, it pooped out every time. There was something definitely wrong with this card. I got my money back so I am still in the market for a 4 GB. Does the card you listed work with the Jam and Window XP computers??
No I haven't got any 4Gb cards. I would probably agree that the card you bought was counterfeit. Which probably is good news..when Sandisk release their 4Gb card, it should work on our Magicians
gentlemen, the 4GB is for sure a fake, please be carefull when someone offers you such cards. they are at most 512M if you are lucky and the ID on the SD is set for 4GB sundisk etc. this is also true for flash disks (disk on key) where in every market in china you can find 8GB sony - which are actually 128/256. Be carefull.

You won't know unless you checked Sandisk's website and contact them whether this is the real article or not. If not for this forum, I'll probably be buying that one.

Yep... that's the one I bought! I couldn't believe that it is a fake! It looked so real and registered as 3.78 GB. At least this reseller has good customer service. Once I alerted him of this issue, he immediately refunded me, and I sent it back. Based on the forums I have read, I decided to get the Adata 4 GB MMC card. I feel good about this card and will post results.
MMC vs SD
Is MMC generally slower than SD?
I have a 1Gb 60X MMC card that benchmarked at 0.46MB/s on my handheld (without FAT backup, with FAT backup, it is 0.43MB/s) compared to a standard Sandisk 2Gb at 0.64MB/s
Not much difference in speed but precious seconds is important if you use the external card for internet browsing
the reason why they were so quick in refunding you is it is a fake and they probably know!!!
Anyways good that it turned out OK.

4 GB Mini SD durability poll

Hello all,
I used a 4 gb mini sd for around 4 months without any serious issues (soft reset fixed everything for me.) Then, out of nowhere, the card just became unreadable. Couldn't access any data from it and I couldn't even reformat it. Completely dead.
So I started poking around about 4gb cards and found (like I probably should have done before I bought the card) that the current mini SD standard stops at 2gb. These "4GB" cards are really 2gb cards that have been hacked and reformatted to 4gb. Now, apparently this works, but drastically shortens the card's shelf life. It is said that most of them die within a few months, if they last that long.
I just wanted to post a poll regarding this issue. Hope this is of interest to everyone.

Well if what you are saying is true, then shouldn't the same apply to SD cards? I had used a 4gb SD card for 2 years in my Magician and Prophet without a problem...I think it was a Transcend.

I think it does apply to standard size SD cards too:
I looked at the Sandisk site and the only 4 gig cards that were being sold were listed as SDHC. Nothing on the official site over 2gb that wasn't high capacity. I was able to track down the Trancend card you were talking about from a reseller (and numerous other ones including Ebay) however, if you go to the official Transcend site you see that there are no standard SD cards in a 4gb size.
This leads me to believe that the info I have been reading regarding this is correct. If the manufacturers are really putting out 4gb cards, why are they not on their official websites?
But the point remains that these 4gb cards (hacked or not) do indeed work in the Trinity (as well as other devices.) It's just for how long that is the question. I just want to find out with what regularity these cards dying so we can judge whether or not it is a worthy risk to buy one and trust our precious data to it.
Matterhorn, I appreciate you relaying your experience with the 4gb standard SD card. Perhaps the hacking and reformatting is more stable in the standard size as compared to the mini version? Hopefully this poll will help us figure it out.

The label on the 4gb SD Transcend looks exactly like the official Transcend color scheme. The card itself is in blue plastic and the label is in vibrant colors with Transcend, 150x, and 4GB written on the label. I believe this is the same one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820208086. It also has a serial number stamped on the back. I really don't think it is a fake Transcend.
My Topram 4gb miniSD continues to faithfully work in my Trinity. I don't know anything about this ebay vendor, this link is just for info http://item.express.ebay.com/TOPRAM...320102528838QQihZ011QQtrZexpQQcmdZExpressItem. It came packaged like an authentic card, some others have no professional packaging. Perhaps it will give up one day, if it does I'll report it right away. I know there has been quite a few people stating that their miniSD cards have quit on them, which I'm sure is true, but I can't help but believe that the squeaky wheel gets the grease, meaning that people that have no problems with their cards are less likely to post results.
I've been using a 4gb card in my Trinity for about a month now.
Gave me a few problems with Media player at one stage. The MSME files for the library dissappeared and I couldnt get them deleted to fix the media library problem.
Put the card in my desktop reader and suddenly they appeared again!!
Since then - no probs. Have it well filled up with mixeded media and prog files.

Wouldnt it stand to reason that if they were 2gb cards "hacked" to 4gb they wouldnt have the capability to store 4gb worth of data? What you are inferring is the "Tardis" effect. Bigger on the inside than the outside which to my knowledge is not currently possible. A bit like having a normal sized mini car with 7 MPV seats inside. I think is just a matter of intermittent hardware to hardware clash/incompatibility not a 2gb hack.
Must admit, have suffered from the card corruption syndrome for the first time in my life whilst using the M700 trinity.Talk about heart attack!!!! The thing that makes me think it is a hardware compatability issue is that I have used that same 4gb miniSD in my wizard variants, prophet variants, treo's etc for over 7months no stress. Hence I know the card is good (thanx mobymemory!)
4GB Problems
I bought a no-name 4GB miniSD cheap on ebay. It worked fine initially in my Trinity, but only took a few launches of TomTom to get corrupted - "no maps found" and hundreds of smiley faces in File Explorer. I was always able to reformat and start over, but soon got tired of that. Strangely the same card performed perfectly when used in an I-mate Jam (inside an SD adapter) or when in a card reader on the PC. I got rid of the card and got a Kingston 2GB and have had no problems since.
I just got more TomTom maps and am trying to decide whether to take the plunge again. Anyone got any positive 4GB stories?

How can I format it?
well i have a 4gb trans. SD 150x it works in my other mp3 player now for a long time, but as far as mini i dont know
i got a topram atm and it seems like it worked for a format or 2 and died after didnt even get to use it in my pocketPC, sending RMA request now :/
i was really looking forward to hear more good news about the 4gb topram miniSD but i dont know atm
I think maybe the poll should be changed to include SDHC cards since that is a variable that is very important on judging the 4gb cards. SDHC cards work but are just not reliable yet in the current roms.

Go to http://www.topram.com/
look at the picture in the middle right under "MiniSD" (orange background): The picture shows a 4.0GB MiniSD Card
BUT
If you click on the picture they tell you only the following cards do exist:
120X 2GB miniSD
120X 1GB miniSD
60X 512MB miniSD
60X 256MB miniSD
no 4.0GB MiniSD
What is this??????????

I bought mine from an ebay shop. You won't find them in Germany because they are from Asia and they're not marketed here. It came in sealed plastic and looked very professionally packaged. As far as the web site goes...how up to date are half the manufacturers web sites on the web?...not very.

good morning guys.
let me share some information i have about flash memory.
few month ago one big electronic shop in my ciy was offering usb flash disk of sizes up to 16 gb. in very cheap price.
alot of my frinds buy that memory.
after few days alot of them returen to the shop to exchange them becuse the memory damged.
some of them did not have anyproblem untile today !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the reason is .
these memory are just 4 gb memeory and haked to be like 16 gb.
so if u try to write one bite over 4 gb you will start write this bite over the first bite of card and you will damge the data on that bite. and maybe the card will not be usable again.
this hake is known to be used on other media before flash memorys.
it was used in some hard disk to foll consumers.
the same story here.
if u have a 4 gb Mini-SD . just try to put more than 2 gb and your data will be gone (bye bye bye). maybe the card will be not usable again .

This theory has been proven to be not true over and over again...search the forums.
hm, hello and from me..
I bought 4 gb minisd Albatron, and after 2 days, the card just stopped. I tryed to format it, but no success. The card just died. After that i read this topic and searched on the albatron site to find some mini sd 4 gb card, and i cant find... after that i exchange the card with 1 gb Kingston and since then - no problems at all.. And i think that this 4 gb minisd cards are really hacked and if you have luck - you may use it maybe 5-6 months.. but i really dont buy 4 gb card, until the manufacturer says that they have one.
Regards,
4Gb Topram mini SD - fine. I've used 2 of these and they have been OK.
2Gb Transcend mini SD - useless. Would corrupt in a few hours no matter what I tried.
1Gb O2 branded mini SD - fine.
I'm still using a generic 4GB card that I bought of EBay and its settling down fine after about 3 months use. although at times, it can be just about noticably slow.
I've had a lot of trouble with the card 'dissappearing' ow and again and the Media Player library going awol. However, the fix's for those problems are well published on other threads.
I purschased a Sandisk 4GB SDHC card hoping it might be a bit faster, th Trinity cant even see it!! So much for SDHC support.

Which 4GB card?

I bought an Orange M700 on Sunday and I only have a 256mb card, I have been reading the issues on the forum and I was going to hold off but I can't wait any longer. I have been used to a 4gb SD in my Charmer for the last year so I think I need to buy a 4gb MiniSD for the M700.
I am running the latest HTC P3600 ROM and I am looking for some peoples experiences (I just hope some are positive ) to work out what to buy and where did you get yours?
Thanks
My Sandisk 4GB miniSDHC works fine since a couple of weeks.
I had daily trouble with a NoName 4GB miniSD before.

I have a Mobymemory 4GB miniSD card in my M700 but I have problems with it. My files disappear and I get corruptions although putting it into a card reader shows the files intact, which makes me think that this device may have a problem with cards of this size.
As you've no doubt seen, there are plenty of posts from people who have had problems with 4GB miniSD cards although some people have had success with M700/HTC3600 and cards of this size as per the previous post.
If you are to get a 4GB card it might be wise to get one from the likes of the brand names like Sandisk, Transcend, Kingston etc etc.

Largest miniSD card?

I just purchased a t-mobile mda off ebay and it came with only a 64MB miniSD card. What is the largest size miniSD card the phone will recognize? Will it recognize the miniSDHC cards? Thanks in advance.
Some people have got 4gb mini sd cards working in their devices. Other people can only handle 2 gb cards.

Yes I experienced the same thing. I purchased a 4gig minisd card but it would not even read the card as if it wasn't there. After that, I purchased a 2gig and that worked fine.
I think the problem with some of those 4gig minisd cards is that they are dual-partition and the Wizard(to the best of my knowledge) does not support dual partition sd cards like other PPC's such as the TyTN II.
Why don't just have a look into the accessories section instead of a new thread? ... you will find a couple of other threads about the topic already!
BTW, miniSDHC are not supported!

I actually dual partitioned mine myself using wm5storage and it works fine that way. As far as I know, nobody's actually figured out why 4 Gb cards work for some people and not for others and their are still others that they work for but the cards constantly get corrupted. I'm part of the latter group, but since I've been using a newer version of a cooked WM6 the card hardly corrupts at all anymore.
