Gonna buy a Cingular 8125--but need just one question answered! - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

I understand that the Cingular 8125 comes bundled with Microsoft Outlook (I don't know which version of Outlook).
But, does this version of Outlook sync with Windows Vista or just XP?
If not with Vista, how do you sync the 8125 with a PC running Vista? (Bonus second question.)
Thanks

Are you sure it comes with Outlook or does it just WORK with Outlook? I am on TMo so I can't say what Cingular does or doesn't do but I had Office 2003 already and the phone syncs with the Outlook I already use.

Correct, just like the MDA, Cingular 8125 (and 8525 for that matter) does not come with Outlook for your PC. You have to have Outlook already.

I thought all Pocket PCs (with or without phone capability) come with some version of Outlook. All of my older Pocket PCs sure did.
As greedy as Microsoft may be, I can't believe that they expect you to buy Outlook separately in order to sync your Pocket PC.

They do. My 8125 came with Outlook 2002 on the CD. Don't know if the posters above didn't look hard enough, or bought an 8125/MDA without the CD.
Edit: See Attachment. Its greyed out since I already have Outlook 2007 installed.

Thanks for the info!
Do you know if Outlook 2002 works with Microsoft Vista?

Here's what I found from here: http://www.outlook-tips.net/howto/vista.htm
"Outlook 2002: It runs, but email account passwords are not saved. After you enter the password during the first email check, Outlook will remember it until you close down Outlook. This is because Outlook used the protected storage interfaces to store passwords and these are no longer supported in Vista. Unless Microsoft decides to create a publicly available hotfix to address this, you won't be able to save passwords. Outlook 2002 is outside of mainstream support so this is unlikely to happen as it's not a critical security hole.
Note that when you enter the password, the Send and Receive that brought up the password dialog may fail but future send and receives will work. Leave Outlook open 24/7 to avoid entering it frequently. "
Didn't see a fix anywhere. Probably won't since Outlook 2002 is no longer supported by Microsoft.

Cool! So far so good!
So if Outlook 2002 runs on Vista does that necessarily mean that it will sync with it? (I heard something about ActiveSync being replaced by something else in Vista.)

Vista uses Windows Mobile Device Center. I don't see why it won't sync, it may require the sync plug in (also on the CD). Couldn't tell you myself.

Maybe the Outlook 2002 that's bundled with the 8125 won't sync with Vista after all? (Vista uses "Windows Mobile Device Center" which replaces ActiveSync)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/devicecenter.mspx
System Requirements
Windows Mobile Device Center is currently only available for the following versions of Microsoft Windows Vista™.
Microsoft® Outlook® XP, Microsoft® Outlook® 2003, and Microsoft® Outlook® 2007 messaging and collaboration clients are required for synchronization of e-mail, contacts, tasks and notes to a Personal Computer.
Guess I may not get the 8125 after all. Am I missing something?

ActiveSync 4.1: Contacts and Appointments with notes not syn

Hi,
Using ActiveSyng 4.1 (Build 4841), XP SP2.
XP Firewall settings look fine.
All contacts and appointments synchronized, no problem, but those with notes are not synchronized.
I can create a contact on my wizard, with notes, which is sync'ed with the laptop, but this sync stops whenever I change the notes on my PC...
I had a similar problem today.
I have my mda vario for a day now. last night I first played with it and synchronized it with my outlook (which is stand alone when I am not at work)
Today at work I started up my outlook and it synced with my server at work.
Then I synced my vario and suddenly all my agenda appointments disapeared on my vario.
Only solution was to sync with my laptop again without it being connected to the server at work
Hi,
I have the same problem, i erased qtek's memory, uninstalled office and activesync, delete all repertory and keys in regedit, but it changes nothing : it won't synchronize but with my work computer it is ok. I have put my pst files from house (data file from outlook) at work and it synchonizes too.
I don't understand :
it is not my QTEK 9100 because it synchronize fine at work
it is not outlook, pst file or activesync (4.0 and 4.1, both are tried)
so what is it ???
I am thinking that there is only one solution : format c: :-(
Please if you have an idea, help us !!!
Michaël
PS : it was ok before, but i don't know what i have done that made that it doesn't work, i have only Kapersky antivirus, no firewall and vnc (to control computer through internet)
Same problem here. Only i was using a Palm E2 and converted everthing to outlook. After synching, everthing but my appointments synched to my wizard. A bit of a catastrophy saving and reimporting the pst file.
Finally someone suggested deleting the profile, then resynching to outlook, providing all data is either on outlook or the wizard, as you have to option to copy everything from either source to the other, and presto seemed to work.
Still having problems with outlook though, after importing either archive or loading a different pst file, i dont seem to have all my info and it seems my calendar is always opening from an archive instead of outlook today.
Will reinstall outlook completely. In any case try recreating the profile.
I have destroyed andrecreate my profile too.
But i changes nothing.
I think that if you have take all data from your wizard, you have certainly lose your note, is it the case ?
I have forgotten to say that only data with note or contact with photo don't synchronize but if you delete all information from outlook and you synchronize your pocket that contains these data, outlook save the contacts, but after, if you add a new contact with note, photo or an appointement with note, activesync doesn't see them. If you change a contact with note/photo that come from the wizard (ie name...) wizard doesn't synchronize it.
The problem is that i don't understand what is the problem source....

What version outlook are you using? did you make sure that notes was checked in the list of programs to synchronise? Also be sure that wizard overwrites the pc data.
Other than that, if you want to try reinstalling outlook. Be sure to save an archive or backup first (I didnt really know how to reload the pst, ie from archive or backup because it shows on outlook as archived folder instead of outlook today! ?????) Thats my next step as well. I'm also going to try to install outlook 2003.
When I speak about notes it is notes contains in other data like note in contact or note in calendar.
The Note section synchrinize... but contact that have a photo or a note, note !
I have destroy all sort of data and it doesn't work, i am sure that it is not link with oulook.
Fixed for me, since I got a new computer. Problems seems to come from the version of ActiveSync. Funny enough, if I first get an error message when syncing, reinstall ActiveSync, then it works, if I do not get this message on first sync, then it does not work...
I think that it could be a good idea that everybody who had the same problem says what running programm is installed on his computer.
For me it is Kaspersky antivirus personna, vnc, nokia toolkit, nero 7, bluetooth driver, vnc.
I have others but i don't think that they could be linked with this problem
Nobody wants to reply ????
Hi Shoopy33,
I took me days to install my desktop properly. Microsoft is cleaning things now with the newest version. What you might want to make sure is that you have Genuine versions of both Windows XP, and Microsoft Outlook. That means that both Windows XP and Outlook need to have SP.
Many things could go wrong if you have a non Genuine version installed in Windows XP. For instance, if you have a Genuine Windows XP but with a non-Genuine Office XP with Outlook, you cannot just desinstall the non-Genuine Office XP, delete all registry files, and install a Genuine Microsoft Outlook version. You'll be stuck!!! It's a nice way from Microsoft to say FU.
Simply put, you'll need to reformat your hard-drive, reinstall everything fresh with Genuine Microsoft softwares that Microsoft will check online, and clone your HD for backup when you have a chance so that you don't have to reinstall everything again from A to Z. That'll take you time, of course.
Microsoft will not check which version of Microsft Outlook you have online, but the ActiveSync from Microsoft will check which version you have offline.
I had the same problems with my MDA Vario.
My solution:
1. export all contacts to separate vcard files.
2. in outlook click Help -> detect and repair
3. scanned my outlook pst file with c:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi\1033\scanpst.exe
4. deleted all notes from my vcards
5. reinserted my vcards in my contacts in Outlook.
(6. i added my contacts notes as Notes in outlook)
now all synchronisation goes well: appointments, notes and contacts
Happens after new firmware
I have some contacts and appointments on my MDA Pro. They also synched well (MDA Pro ->PC). However, after I put the new T-Mobile firmware on my MDA Pro, "normal" contacts synchronize just fine, but those with photos or contacts do not. I suspect a bug in ActiveSync, but there is also nothing in the MS Knowledgebase about that :-/
I had this problem, and my solution was to erase pocket and format computer, but now, there is no problem.
I know that there is certainly a better solution, but I have not !
I can only say that it is a problem from the computer, because at work, it had ever well synchronised...

Activesync 4.1 Problems

Hi All,
I just got a MDA Vario (HTC Wizard) from T-mobile (UK) and installed Activesync 4.1 OK (well it caused my Windows XP machine to crash before I updated the Nforce2 Motherboard drivers!).
Now, I can install & remove programs OK.
But I can't get my emails and contacts etc from Windows Outlook 2003 (Office Pro 2003 SP2) to my Vario - even though activesync does a synchronisation??
Also contacts generated on the Vario don't end up on the PC outlook 2003 either??
Any ideas ? Before I have to manually enter all my contacts & addresses??
Cheers
John
for me active sync works first time out of the box.
you chould have a look at all the options and make sure they look sensible. Under options-->sync options. make sure contacts is ticked and settings look correct to you.
As your device is new, I believe you are entitled to free support from microsoft for 60 days and for tmobile for the life of your contract. I don't know about tmobile support but I have always found the microsoft technical helpline extremely good, and surprisingly few consumers use it!
rgds
Thanks for that - it must be something to do with mt desktop PC as I loaded Activesync 4.1 on my centrino laptop and got my contacts onto my MDA without any problems? Both are using the same Windows XP Corp so I don't think it's a windows issue and the only real difference between the laptop and the Desktop is that there is a ADSL/Router with Firewall connected to the Desktop, which may be upsetting the transfer of data from Outlook?
I did try a Bluetooth connection but that didn't work either??
Strange that I can load/unload programs, browse my PDA through Activesync but I cannot exchange data from Outlook 2003 to the PDA??
this could also be a problem with your outlook profiles. i.e. it could be that it is syncing, but with a new profile that does not include your old data. Have a look at the outlook options.
The extreme way to deal with it, is to export or backup all your outlook contacts and diary and other data. Uninstall outlook, rebnoot and make sure you delete the folder under program files. Then reinstall fresh. Setup to sync with PDA and then reimport all your old settings. Although this is a last resort.
Well do to a corruption of my root hard drive MBR I had to reformat and re-install windows (A nice long job!) - and would you believe it, that the newly installed activesync is now working properly - ie emails and contacts are synchronised on both the Desktop PC and my Vario???
Oh well I'll know next time !
Cheers

Sync with Exchange AND another Outlook?

:?: Does anyone know if it is possible to keep TWO Outlooks in sync with ActiveSync (when one of them is an Exchange server)?
You can keep switching off the sync with exchange to sync with the second outlook calendars but this resets all of the associated sync data (such as modified date etc)...
Any ideas appreciated!
You might want to be a bit more specific...
I currently Sync with Outlook on two PCs and one Exchange Server, here is how I'm configured.
Work PC: Sync- Calendar, Tasks & Notes
Home PC: Sync- Calendar, Tasks, Notes & Contacts
Exc Svr: Sync- Calendar, Tasks, Notes, Contacts & e-mail
This allows me to:
1. Have an offsite back-up of my personal contacts.
2. Have ready access to all personal & business appointments everywhere and have the info backed-up offsite.
3. Have a dedicated e-mail address that only goes to my phone via Push e-mail.
Works great for me.
Exc Srv- Contacts/ Calendar/ EMail/ Tasks
I am trying to connect to another Outlook instance @ work just for the Calendar and Contacts to keep them in sync.
When I select those in ActiveSync (the Work PC) it says that I need to uncheck the connection to the Exchange Server...
Any ideas?
Kyphur, do you have the problem that when you sync with your PC, it tried to reach the exchange server first and takes forever (due to teh fact that GPRS is disabled during activesync). That is the problem I had as well as what zb6673 is saying.
I owudl love to get this worked out becuase I got addicted to push email and also like the idea of an offsite backup

I am using the T-Mobile US 2.26 OS Rom (AKU 2.3) with ActiveSync 4.2
When I am connected to my PCs, Activesync on my PC connects to the Exchange Server (and the status is displayed in Activesync on my desktop).
I wonder if my problem is that I'm using teh free mail2web. I don't think it allows pc's to connect to it. Thanks for your help, I'll do some more digging (or setup my own exchange server at home )
So you are NOT really connecting to two seperate instances of Outlook (for example you would have both the Calendar for the Exchange Server AND the calendar for the local PC checked in Activesync).
I found a solution in that the PC I want to keep updated I can use Laplink PDAsync...that seems to work...I'll have to see if the autoarchiving from exchange works if the records are not "touched" by PDAsync...

I'm using mail2web free account also. It won't allow MS Outlook to connect but an Activesync connection is an Activesync connection...
well I gave mail2web another go today. It worked perfectly until I unplugged my phone. The next time (and every time since then) Activesync on the PC hangs while "looking for changes" after it finally times out, I can sync by clicking teh sync button on my MDA. The pc keeps saying "connected - synchronzation error"
So its working, but its a pain waiting for the PC to time out everytime I need to sync.
wella s soon as I typed that it started working correctly, then hung the next time. oh well.
I used to skip all PUSH related posts because before i didn't have a data plan. Now that i do i'm trying to get it to work.
I set up an account with mail2web, put the settings on my phone and i'm getting an error saying The server cannot be reached in activesync on my PC.
I noticed it won't let me sync my outlook emails (two hotmail accounts and one gmail account) AND the mail2web exchange server. It's either one or the other. I'd like to have access to both, or is this not possible.
I gave emoze a shot but didn't like how it'd wait for outlook to sync then push those emails. If anyone can point me in the right direction as to where to get started and what to do that'd be great!
I have a question in the same vein.
I have recently been given access to an Exchange account on my work server.
I would like to be able to sync all of my accounts together. (Outlook at work> outlook at home> mobile outlook.) Mainly I just want the contacts and calendar functions.
The dilemma I am facing is that when I try to sync outlook with my laptop, it tries to find the exchange server (which for the life of me I can not connect to with my laptop). Is there any way to bypass this?

kyphur: How do you do this. Using ActiveSync 4.2 when you have the exchange server defined (for contacts) if you try to pick contacts on your home or work sessions it says you can't do that while exchange is defined for contacts.
What I want to do is similar to what you are doing so I would love a solution. I have exchange 2003 at home so my home outlook is already sync'ed with exchange. What I want is my outlook pst at WORK to get its contacts from the PDA. The only way I can do it now, is remove Exchange contacts, turn on WORK contacts with the PDA have it sync and copy over; then take OFF WORK contacts and put back Exchange contacts, which is a crappy process to have to keep doing when there are changes.

Maybe the saving grace for me is that I always configure the Exchange Server after I have the two PCs configured to Sync.
I am currently using ActiveSync 4.5 Beta but I have been doing this since AS 4.0.

Thanks for replying...
Unfortunately its not working for me. I removed all the sessions, re-added Work and Home with contacts syncing... then added the exchange server and it will not allow me to pick Contacts for syncing with the following error...
"You cannot sycnhronize contacts with Exchange Server because it is already synchronizing with Work PC. To synchronize contacts with Exchange Server, clear the contacts check box for Work PC, and try again."
Did you possibly have to change some registry/etc on the PPC to get it to allow this? Are you running something like AKU 3.2 that maybe allows this type of syncing?
I am also using ActiveSync 4.5Beta but it looks like its a problem more on the PDA then on the desktop.
Solved!
I had the same problem.
I've found a solution in the newsgroup microsoft.public.pocketpc.activesync.
Here is the link:
http://groups.google.com/group/micr...read/3c269ef3f5c96321/48c16c74400cb034?tvc=1&
My prerequisites:
* MDA Pro ROM-Version: 1.30.113 GER
* Two PC's with XP SP2, Outlook 2003 connected to two different Exchange 2003 Servers.
* ActiveSync 4.2.0 (Build 4876)
1.Change the following registry entry on the PocketPC
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ActiveSync\
EnableNonLocalCrossPollination=1 (DWORD)
2.Soft reset the PocketPC.
3.Change the options (appointments, contacts, tasks, ...) in ActiveSync on the PocketPC. Note: It is only possible on the PocktePC!
4.Connect the PocketPC to the PC and you're done.
Hope this helps.

Syncing with Windows Calendar and Contacts

I don't know if this is the right place to post this. I've Googled the site to try and find the answer but there didn't seem to be a request quite like mine but appologies if this has been answered elsewhere:
Right, I've got Vista on my new laptop but have no intention in acuiring Outlook 2007 for it (at the moment I'm running Office Home and Student 2007 - no Outlook any more, just Onenote, don't get me wrong I love Onenote!) I was just planning on using Windows Live Desktop Mail and Windows Contacts on my laptop as I have a desktop running the full Office Auite. However, I would like my hpone to be able to sync contacts and calendar onto my laptop.
Does anyone know of a 3rd party app which allows for WMDC to sync with the built in Calendar and Contacts within Vista?
Currently my Desktop in running Office 2003 and Active Sync 4.1 on a XP Home SP2 OS.
My laptop is running Office 2007 and WMDC on Vista Home Premium.
My phone is a T-Mobile Vario II running WM5. I'd love to upgrade to WM6 but I'm a bit worried to use a home brew as I don't really know what I'm doing when it comes to switching. I just wish T-Mobile would support the Vario II the same as the have done the Dash!
Any suggestions for keeping all my contacts and calendar up to date across all three devices?

I recently found a program called "PIM Backup". It allows you to back the data up to a file which you can then copy off.

Hi.
Have a similar problem
Using Outlook Express for Email and instead of MS Office / Outlook we use Open Office [its free ]
Found a link to connect O.E. YET to try it, but it is ...
http://www.reunion.com/site-root/download_reunionforoutlook.jsp
Also if you know of a calendar plugin for O.E., please post it
i use Jeyo Mobile Companion, brilliant for backing up contacts, sending SMS via pc.
Its different to some others in the fact that you compile the sms as you would an email but it sends it via the phone, so no internet connection needed.
Its brill at work, save "un-cradling" then reply/send sms then cradle, its all done with a swift alt-tab. heh
Alternative to ActiveSync
I haven't (yet) tried it but there is a project called FinchSync (http://www.finchsync.com) which claims: "FinchSync is a tool for synchronizing contacts, appointments and tasks from Mozilla email and calendar products with a Pocket PC or SmartPhone."
If anyone has any hands on experience with this program I for one would be interested to hear about it...?
you could set up a mail2web account which is push email and has a outlook style web based interface allowing you to sync everything contacts, calendar and tasks Did i mention its FREE. www.mail2web.com

Hi.
Found 2 more , 'am going to try them out today & 2morow.
Incase you are interested in giving them a shot also, the programes are :
[1] Mobile Master : http://www.mobile-master.com/ you can download it on cnet.com alsoo
[2] Funambol http://www.funambol.com/opensource/
Please Note : I haven't tried them as yet, so please take all required BackUp, etc.
Cheers.
You're using Vista? The WMDC will let you Sync your phone with your Vista Contacts - no problem - infact you should now also be able to Sync your mail with Windows Mail and if memory serves your calendar with Windows calander - all things that with XP you had to have Outlook to do!
EDIT
Sorry - seem to have spoken to soon. The beta version of WMDC allowed for Syncing with those programs - I always use Outlook so I haven't even really looked at those settings since - it appears that it was something they supported in the Beta and dropped from the final edition which is quite unfortunate! (probably just trying to sell more copies of outlook). A free work around might be to use Microsoft Live Mail e-mail client (Not Windows Mail) and then install the windows live messenger and set it up to sync your contact details with Live Messenger and then the Live Mail client should then have a synced version of your contacts - just another idea - sorry bout that!
