Price wise, the Dopod version seems to be least expensive. But which of the versions is the easiest to upgrade and has the most features?
I've been looking for a TyTn for around $450 for use in the US. English obviously. Is this realistic?
Aside from some hardware differences, you can always change the ROM on them, if you don't care about the hardware differences then get whatever is cheapest to you.
it absolutelly doesnt matter. only differences is in button layout, if it is video button on front side and some cosmetic changes. IMHO TyTN exist in 3 versions - HERM 100, 200 and 300. but keep in mind, if you upgrade your herm, or supercid this device, you will probably lost your warranty.

I reread the wiki page on the Hermes versions, and just as you mentioned, there is the 100, 200 and 300. Which is mostly cosmetic and button layout. Says the 100 has problems with holding the stylus.
Do you think I can realistically get a Tytn version for under $450, and where?

I picked up my Cingular 8525 on Ebay for $422. It had been used for two months, supposedly unlocked (it wasn't but thanks to this forum that was not a dealbreaker). Came with a spare charger/cradle, cheapo screen protectors, a 1GB microSD, and a case for some other phone (treo?).
I think in general the Cingular 8525 will be cheaper than the other Hermes models since it lacks the front camera. If you don't mind that, then get a locked one and unlock it yourself using pof's program. Under $450 should be no problem for an 8525

Hi I live in the United Staes. I am now presented with an opportunity to be able to buy the O2 Exec. So basically I have 2 choices, the Imate Jasjar which is available here, thus with warranty coverage, or the O2 XDA Exec which I really want for its color. I don't really know if there is a hardware difference. I want to buy the O2 Exec from one of the members here. He was kind enough to offer the responsibility to send it to O2 if there is a problem with it later.
Does the I-Mate Jasjar have the corporate settings too?
So if you guys were me, what would you guys go for?
Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.
Having owned both a JJ and Exec I would, at this point, recommend the Exec because:
- in Corporate mode it is quicker and has more storage space
- it does not appear to have the SMS notification bug
And like you I prefer the all black colour of the XDA.
Also in the UK you can get an unlocked Exec for less than £300 while a JJ can be £540/£640 (contract/SIM free).
The hardware is identical, and the corporate settings on the Exec closely resemble the Jasjar install when you skip the customization after a hard reset. In all honesty, I ended up buying the Exec, it looks way cooler, it also has BLUE keyboard backlight instead of red, which makes it much much better visible at night.
@Jah. Could you kindly elaborate what the SMS notification bug is. I am asking this because for me on the JJ ocasionally when a new SMS arrives it causes my phone to freeze. Just wondering if this is what you are referring to as the bug.
Kind Regards

Unfortunate for me that I don't know anyone in the UK. I'll be buying the Unopened Box O2 Exec for £500.
That is what I paid as well, and not too bad in comparison with Jasjar and Qtek 9000 prices.

Did you bought it direct from O2 or from one of the members here?
Any tips as to check the validity of the sale?
I already asked the seller to send me pictures of the SEALED box. Is there actually a seal or it is just in a box?
@srmz
Yes, that is it. Search here there a whole thread on the SMS problem
@cktlcmd
This is probably something you already considered and checked, but I thought I'd bring it up just in case. My main concern would be the question of whether it's locked or unlocked. For £500 I would imagine it should be unlocked. Which carrier will you be using?

Yes, I have a Jasjar and use T-Mobile. I'm not a big user on the voice side of things and haven't had any problems with reception, but my limited use of that aspect might not make me the best source for an opinion.
I do use the data connection often (which is why I like T-Mobile's $19.99 unlimited data) and haven't had any problem getting a signal that way.
Ultimately I'm really happy with it because it's just the device I've been wanting. I use it for just about everything.
OK, I just bought the BRAND NEW, UNOPENED, O2 XDA Exec. I can't wait for it to be on my hands. Any tips as to a good screen protector, and where to buy it from? A link would be really appreciated.
Would you mind sharing where & how much for the unit? I am interested in getting one to be used in CA on T-Mo. Thanks.

I bought my screen protectors from PPC Techs at http://www.pocketpctechs.com/main~unit~iMATE_JASJAR-496~area~home.htm
Their WriteSHIELDS come in two flavors, the C2 (Crystal Clear) and the AG (Anti Glare.) I've used both and found they are both very good. I have a crystal one on my old Dell and have never had to change it. To me, the crystal one is so clear that you really don't know it's there. That said, I have the anti glare one for my Universal, primarily because of the phone aspect. The anti glare version (which also stands up to usage very well) is also good with keeping fingerprints to a minimum so it works better when you have it up to your face too. PPC Techs offers a package where you can get one of each and that's actually what I bought for the Universal, I'm just using the AG currently.

I bought my Jasjar from Convergent Technology at http://www.convergentech.com/
Their price looks to be $1079.99, down from $1199.99 when I bought it. The color (colour )was never an issue for me, so I went with a company I had already worked with to give me a bit more confidence that any issues I might have (which I haven't, fortunately) would be worked out with a minimum of headaches.
kelford, thanks for the info, the vendor you used is fairly pricey, e.g. their price on the K-Jam is nealry $150 over what MMB charges! I had to do a double take to make sure they are not posting C$

sclui56, that very well could be. at the time i was looking to buy though, every vendor i found (except ebay) had the JJs for $1,200 so there didn't seem much of a choice at the time. that was when it was first out though, (some sites still listed pre-order status when this vendor had them in stock) and prices hadn't started falling yet. obviously their prices drop much slower than everyone else's! they must have less gravity or something.
in any event, there were two reasons i bought from them. 1) all of my previous PDA purchases had been direct through Dell so this one was a little different and being such a high ticket item there was a real trust concern. going with someone i knew was important. 2) (and probably even more importantly) i wanted it now!!! so yes, i could have waited and saved some money, but now i've had all this time to play with the JJ!

Thanks for the tip Kelford.
I'm kicking around the idea of buying a Hermes, it's a sweet phone and it seems to have fallen a bit in price since I last looked at it. When searching for the different branded versions on eBay, I noticed that I could pick up a Cingular-branded Hermes (8525) a good deal cheaper than the rest of them. Are there any major shortcomings to the 8525 over other versions of the Hermes outside of the missing front camera? Using an American GSM provider, would I even miss the front camera?
I'm on T-Mobile, but if I grabbed a Cingular Hermes I'd obviously just go ahead and unlock it and use it with my service. Honestly, I think it would be pretty sweet to get the T-Mo UK branded Hermes (MDA Vario II) and carry that around instead. Then my friends would be like "whoa dog why does my T-Mobile store not have this phone how did you score it!!!" and I would be like "hell nah homies this **** is elite". But alas, it's not worth paying $600+ for a T-Mo Europe branded one when I can get the Cingular-branded one for well under 500.
Do you guys who have used multiple Hermes' have any preference? Would I likely be just as well off with an 8525 (given that I plan to flash it) as an HTC branded "TyTN" or other HERM200 version of the phone?
Thanks!
I got the 8525... If your not going to use the video calling, why pay more?

That's just it, though -- I'm wondering if it's even possible to use video calling in the United States. Is it?
More importantly, are there any replacement shells or cover-ups available for the 8525 such that one could make it appear not to be a Cingular device? I know I'm weird, but if I buy a Hermes for use with T-Mobile USA, I think it looks silly to have Cingular branding on the ****.
Thanks so much!

The Vario II pricing is coming down in the UK ... just got given one for £50 on a renewal which is roughly 60% less than I was quoted about six weeks ago.

You might be able to snap one up off eBay UK on the cheap if your timing is good ...

I am pretty sure a little alcohol and rubbing would remove the branding.... if your really desperate you could use a little nail polish remover...
I think you can buy "shells" for these phones on ebay. I don't know if they are interchangeable, aka using a Vario II shell on a Cingular 8525, but I would assume they would as long as the button configuration is similar.

That's actually a really good idea; I could only find about two total MDA Vario II's on ebay.com (which makes perfect sense), but when I went to ebay.co.uk there were ****loads. Unfortunately, it seems that most sellers only offer to ship within the UK so I'd have to find one ahead of time that would be okay with shipping to the States.
That brings my next question though. What's the deal with QWERTY vs. QWERTZ keyboards? The MDA Vario II seems to be the latter, and I've typed on a QWERTY all my life and really have no intention of switching. Is it possible to not only map the buttons to QWERTY on a Vario II, but to physically switch the keys?
Man, what a pain this is all turning out to be. I guess I should probably just score a Cingular-branded Hermes and be done with it.

Hell yeah if the wizards are going for 250!
I'll think about upgrading next year (at which point the Kaiser will no doubt be available on my contract with O2). That's how I got the Wizard and Hermes (both of which became available from O2 UK about 6 to 12 months after they were initially released.
Til then, am happy with my Hermes and can probably cope without built in GPS.
I will not selling TyTN to get kaiser, I will keep the TyTN for now.. It does everything I need for now.. getting Kaiser only if I stumble on a good price, maybe 2nd hand or something. 256Mb ROM, 128Mb RAM and 3mpx camera with AF is only what is attracting me to Kaiser, on the other hand I am missing IRDA and Comm Manager button that are missing!!
Since I already got GPS receiver , I think it will not be worth of upgrade since I payed my new TyTN in my country something around 800€ or something like that and Kaiser will not be any less I recon..
To get a picture, it is like 3 months of average sallery in Croatia, witch is insane.. lol

From what I have read, the processor used in Tilt/Tytn II is a dual-core processor, so, even though it runs at 384Mhz, it's faster than 8525's 400Mhz processor. Also, screen tilting is not the only upgrade. You forgot a 3PM camera, 128MB of RAM, 256MB of ROM, a built-in GPS, etc.
@fordracerguy: If you had read the threads here, or maybe the specs over at pdadb, i think you would have easily understood the "big deal"
Sold for $365 on ebay. Did I mention the BlackJack or actually the Microsoft Smartphone OS SUCKS. The phone isnt too bad but MS SP WM5 sucks compared to PPC. I am hating the limitations pending the Kaiser in Sept.
Well, That does sound pretty nice. However, does WM5 or WM6 support a multi threaded operating system? Or is it more one core is for hardware stuff like the radio, and the other is for the OS ?

Ha! Ha! No still not sure if I'll buy one yet, that wasnt why I sold. I'm a bit addicted to smartphones and UMPCs, i'ts not unusual (although some would argue it is stupid!) for me to buy a phone and then sell a few days later. Over the past 12 months I've had:

not to mention the solid state 16 GB memory. To us here in the US, the price difference is only $100, so even with the buttons on the X7500, it does not justify the price. Their milking it too much.
others might say...mini SD or micro SD cards are now cheap... YES that is true, but you loose the ability to hot swap your cards, especially if the hard drive starts acting wierd and you have no other option but to use the card as your storage for applications. YES, you can use the 4 in one cable to attach peripherals, but of course, I wouldn't be carrying that thing in my belt pocket.
To me, the added peace of mind not worrying about the hard drive going nuts is a worthy cause to go for the X7510, especially for 1st time buyers.
...
GoSolutions.com wants $1299 for 7510
If GoSolutions.com is USA, then the $1299 price they are asking is $500 more than the X7501 and NO JOG STICK or BUTTONS. It is a ridiculous price. I have about half of my 2GB SD card free and about 6GB of the MicroDrive to go.
