Is it possible to use WPA2 or WPA + AES ? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Is there any radio firmware, patch, or registry tweak that you can enable WPA2 or perhaps WPA+AES on 802.11g? I am running WPA+TKIP right now but wouldn't mind experimenting with something more. At home I have a Linksys WRT-54g router with DD-WRTv23 firmware. It's rock solid and has loads of features with the after market firmware.
I recently updated my Cingular 8525 to the latest firmware from Cingular/AT&T. I noticed that it is supposedly AKU 3.3, which I've seen screenshots with WPA2 as an option for Wifi. Unfortunately, WPA2 does not show up in my options like on the pics online. I have radio rom 1.34 if that matters. I did see there was a radio version 1.38 leaked from Italy but I'm wary of trying this if it's not going to make a positive difference.
Thanks in advance.

AFAIK at this time is not possible to use WPA2 on hermes. till now I flashed at least 7 versions ROM, but no one has WPA2 support. Many people awaiting this functionality. somebody correct me, if I am wrong.

It's possible, but requires third-party wireless supplicant. Got both wpa+aes and wpa2+aes working with Odyssey Access Client for windows mobile http://www.juniper.net/customers/support/products/aaa_802/oac_client_user.jsp

The encryption part of the wi-fi stack is OS dependent so a radio upgrade really won't take you very far. There are a number of reports of a swedish AKU 3.3 ROM having WPA2 (prob'ly the source of the screen shots) though nobody's seems to say if there are more flavors than TKIP. See here for one. The fact it didn't make it on to the HTC official test ROM should tell you something though.
As an aside: I have personally been unable to connect two HERM200 (an 8525 and my TyTN) to APs with the encryption set to dual WPA/WPA2 and had to scale back to just WPA (APs involved: 2Wire and Netgear)- whatever the reason it doesn't bode well for the Herm200 wifi radio.

I tried installing the Juniper Odyssey client and my device became very slow. I was not able to connect to a network at my hopital that requires EAP-PEAP w CHAP5 (or something like that).
It was as though the Odyssey client competed with the built in wireless manger or something.
Did you guys have trouble installing and using Odyssey on the 8525?

I tried it on my TyTN (not upgraded, stock WM5), and it only added WPA+AES; not WPA2.

as described above... its embedded into the ROM.. therefore upgrade to AKU 3.3 or Windows Mobile 6 and you will have WPA2

As Walshieau said, you'll need a recent AKU. I can confirm that the .CAB listed above made my AKU 3.3 device WPA2 capable.
I was using it before I installed my current ROM. My ROM back then was the HTC WWE 2.05 ROM (AKU 3.3).
The ROM I'm using right now comes with WPA2 built-in. You might download that one if the functionality is that important to you.

Did you run the cab attachment in my earlier post?

Yes - thanks to BKBroil .cab file.
I'm running Black Magic v3.0 on my Hermes with radio 1.48. Although there are drop down settings for WPA2 + AES & TKIP the wifi card would never connect (unless WEP or open encryption was used). But as soon as I installed the SPM_4379_02.cab (& restart) everything works as it should.

Cingular 8125 WIFI issues - radio version related?

I'm wondering if there's help beyond those who travel down into the wizard forums about wifi on my device.
I have a Cingular 8125 flashed with Summiter's AKU2.3 Test2 rom. This has the 2.25.11 Cingular radio version installed, and I'm having wifi issues. My questions are as follows:
Does the radio version have anything/everything to do with the performance of wifi in the Cingular 8125?
Are there additional tests that I can see where the hangup is getting my device to work with a belkin pre-n router model F5D8230-4; Firmware Version 1.01.03.
Problem: My 8125 will not connect to a belkin pre-n router. It shows the network is available, it attempts to cnnect, then after about 5-7 seconds, it either says its unavailable for a few seconds, or it says the network is available but doesn't complete its connection. I've tried connecting to the router on all performance settings for wifi on my device, same behavior continues.
It WILL connect to a Linksys SRX 100 router, but performance is erratic. If I let it sit too long, it will timeout, and never get new data from websurfing... instead I have to disable the wifi, re-enable it, and get it to reconnect to the router, then wifi works again. It works for varing lengths of time, typically when I don't let it idle, it keeps the connection.
I'm unsure what will fix this problem. The radio in the original test AKU2.3 by summiter did the same thing as the newer radio packed in test2 - which is the radio version called 2.25.11 i believe.
Best hopes to a few chaps who can help me out here.
I did have Sum Sum installed, which related to the 802.11g registry mod, I've also tried removing that and still same performance. Any help?
WiFi issues after AKU2.3 upgrade
Hey mengesb,
I was just wondering... is your router a 802.11b or 802.11g?
I managed to connect to a computer using Internet Connection Sharing(ICF) on a g-wireless card, but I can not connect to a b-router. The logs on my router say the phone repeatedly managed to connect.
I had been connecting to both these setups everyday before I did the upgrade.
Hopefully this may help break down the problem.
The wireless router that I have the biggest issue with is a Belkin Pre-N router, so technically its 802.11g
Hey Mengesb,
I found an article on 4winmobile.com that might help solve your problem.
Here is what they say about pre-N routers:
One caveat for those using their HTC Prodigy with Belkin Pre-N Routers: You must update the Router firmware to V1.01.03 (available from the Belkin Download Page ). This is not necessary for the HTC Universal (O2 Exec, iMate Jasjar etc) which uses a different hardware WiFi system.
Unfortunately the updated Belkin firmware will not connect to the XDA IIi or XDA IIs, so if you own one of these and a MiniS, you will need to choose which one will be able to connect.

I also found out that that I had to reboot my router (Dlink DI614+ 802.11b) everytime I try to connect with my Wizard because even after disconnecting, the router still has the wizard registered as connected.
Hope that helps.

I'll check this out at my earliest convience but we'll see what happens. From what the router says - there's no newer firmware that is needed for the router. I'll see if this one is compatible, but the lat time I firmwared their router, heh, i nuked it - wrong firmware (pictures were SO the same!) anyway... they got this as a replacement.
Wifi disconnect
Having exact same issue as mengesb with WiFi disconnecting after 5-15 seconds (seems to hang on longer while I'm actively using WiFI, but disconnects nevertheless). I'm using the official download from HTC website
ROM 2.25.11.1 WWE
Date 5/6/06
Radio 02.25.11
Did a Hard Reset with no change in behavior. I'm using 802.11g (linksys WRV54G v2.37 firmware) and I had no WiFi issues using old original ROM (1.something) that I got with my Cingular 8125. When Wifi disconnects, the phone dutifully connects to EDGE/GPRS correctly and works fine, but slowly of course, through GPRS.
I've tried both answers to "My Network connects to ..." (Work vs Internet)
I've tried turning off cell radio (flight mode; then WiFi turned On)
Hmmmmph ...
try with the 802.11e QoS > setting in OFF in the Pre N settings, I did that and it worked!!!
im having the same exact issue with my new rom, the old one worked gread with my D-link 614 +, now it sees it but i wont connect unless you reset the router. Does anyone have any solution for this?
thanks
I reflashed my belkin today to the same firmware, and my mda couldnt connect (wizard 200). Disabling 802.11e did work, which implies that there is a bug in the mda with handling of 802.11e.
It may be worth noting this somewhere else as well since it may be that more APs will fail when 802.11e is enabled.

Wi-fi, WPA2-PSK on WM5 Prophet?

My work wi-fi network uses WPA2-PSK encryption/security, and I also use that on my home wi-fi network as well.
WM5 does not seem to support this.
Recently, I was playing around with one of the PDAVIET Windows Mobile 6 Roms on my phone, and I discovered that WPA2-PSK was supported and it worked great!
Unfortunately, that Rom wasn't really very stable (my phone would just randomly shut off with no warning or explanation), so I have returned to using a Windows Mobile 5 Rom.
It's more boring, but much more stable (seeing as I don't have a landline, I need my mobile phone to be reliable).
Anyway, since it seems like the issue is that of software, not hardware, does anyone on this forum know of a way to get WPA2-PSK support on WM5 devices without flashing to a WM6 Rom?
I imagine that this should be possible, but my google searches and forum searches so far have shown nothing.
(And shame on HTC/Microsoft for not providing some sort of update that provides this kind of basic functionality...I just bought this PDA/phone new 7 months ago, I don't like being "forced" to upgrade to a new device to get such a simple thing as software support for a standard wireless security protocol!)
Google for Juniper Odyssey Client or try an AKU3 WM5 Rom (Aserg).
After several WM6 tries, i installed ASERG 3.13 (AKU3) yesterday and it seems to work like a charm. For me, WPA-PSK support was one of the requirements, which works well with this image.
Thanks for the advice!
Was on a phone-flashing binge the past few weekends and I'm really busy now, but I will certainly give an ASERG AKU3 ROM a try in the near future.

Wifi - New Rom

hey I've searched pretty much everywhere and I can't find a solution, Got K-jam Rom 2.16.9.1, apart from not being able to find a better Rom, I can't fix my wifi issues, weak signal - struggles to connect and usually gives an error stating that it couldn't assign IP adress. ok so far I've put wifi setting to full performance and placed a registry hack, but nothing changed. assigning my own IP I haven't tried cause I don't know how to do it! anyhow I know this wifi problem is old, but perhaps there is a solution out there!
anyone come across a solution ?
Try to update the Radio ROM.
I'm having this same problem and I can't figure out how to fix it.
I'll try connecting to wifi at home and work and it'll say it's connecting but never actually connects, and then an error message will come up saying "cannot obtain a server assigned IP address"
and I've already updated my Radio to the 2.19.11 version. I also tried changing the access point name from "wap.voicestream.com" to "internet2.voicestream.com" and that didn't work either.
Please help!
ah dude if your using t-mobile, then u have to get 2.69, works best
If you have T-Mobile and you're having this problem it's because you can't use the proxy while you're connected to wifi. You have to go in to connection settings and remove the check from the use proxy checkbox.

It sounds like you may be using the wrong type of security on the network. Log in to the network with a laptop and then check the security settings. I generally use WPA-Personal with TKIP. However there are several other possibilities. My WIZA100 works fine with my g-54 set to TKIP.

I admit that I am somewhat unaware of some of the workings on the Wiz. However, I thought that the Radio Rom was only for the GSM functions. Does the ROM also include the Wireless Radio functions?

WPA2 with wm6.1 on BA works!!

I'm using a linksys WRT54GL router and running WM6.1 professional (build 19199.1.0.0 PV/DVH) radio 1.13.00
Using WPA2 personal with TKIP+AES
Installed HTC commanager on my BA
the trick:
go to settings, connections, wireless lan.
enable wifi
go to HTC commanager
turn on WIFI
go to settings, connections networkcard
select your network
select wpa-psk and tkip
type your network key
connect.
wait a few seconds, the system will not connect.
go to HTC commanager
turn off the WIFI
wait a few seconds
turn on WIFI
and voila you have connection and WPA2 works fine!!!!
I'm using 6.1 Build 19716 with the Wifi_v2 driver and it's suberb!! BT, GPRS, WEP, WPA and WPA2... ALL OK fast and works all in first time.
No wakeups in BT untill now.
I LOVE MY BA!!! and thanks to all you guys that release this roms and previous ones as all the help from the forum!

Sometimes I,ve to repeat on/off/on with HTCcomm, but after connection it's stable
I flashed the ROM with 19716 and installed the WiFi V2 driver but unfortunately had the same issues as I do with 19199; when I install the new driver WiFi won't connect at all, the GPRS icon never even attempts to turn into the WiFi icon. I uninstall the driver and i'm back to square one with unreliable attempts at connecting.
I tried installing the new driver immediately after flashing with 19716 ROM (just after No/Yes/Yes) and then again after another No/Yes/Yes but loading the WiFi driver through the 'Wireless LAN' utility first.
If anyone has other suggestions, i'm all ears!
hi cr_972003
I had those issues...
Pay attention that only one rom 19716 works with Wifi v2!!! (its posted on the thread I mentioned)
When installing Wifi v2 you must be in FLIGHTMODE (NO RADIO ON.. ALL OFF)
Give it a Try... In my all is working 100%!!
If any of the Rom builders could try this driver...
I thought my procedure of instaling was OK...
Any one more can try this driver and post the results??

Dang, my bad. I didn't have it in flightmode whilst I installed the driver. I'll test again tonight. Thanks again.
not correct
driver x ba are only for wpa tkip and not for wpa2 aes
if router is setting for wpa+wp2 it works because ba use wpa
An update on my findings;
19716 from hoangdat works perfectly as described by flyboy____. 19716 from DVH behaves like the 19199 ROMs in that the WiFi v2 driver kills WiFi entirely.
Thanks to flyboy___ my WiFi connects ever time
all credits to the guys in the original Wifi driver were are here to test and give feedback.

[Q] Anyone else experiencing WEP WiFi issues?

Upon initial unboxing of my G-tablet I could not securely connect to my router, but could if I disabled WEP. The first update I recieved from Viewsonic patched this and all was fine until I installed the TnT lite 2.2 mod.
Last night I installed the 2.4 mod (which I assume includes this patch) and WEP once again worked. After modding I performed the recommended data wipe and WEP was once again dead. (It tries, but can't aquire a DHCP address.)
Hoping this would be solved in the Vegan mod I installed that only to find out it an issue here as well. No WEP here either.
Is this a known bug in the kernal, or a problem with my tablet? Any patches out there someone can point my to to fix. (also completely unrelated, but I'd love to get sound working for AVIs - my g-tab would be perfect with this and WEP.)
Thanks for any help.

Hmmm ... sound like the issue is at your wireless router.
My GTab with TnT-Lite V2.XX connect fine at 5 different routers (home, work, friends', in-laws).
What's your router brand and model?
I have never had issues with WEP (attempted on two different routers, during testing). It's probably the device being picky.
Bigger issue, however -- WEP is useless, from a security standpoint. It was cracked many years ago and it literally takes minutes to bypass from anyone with the tools to do so (which are readily accessible). If you cannot use WPA/WPA2, you might be better off just using nothing at all and then locking down access by MAC address. This is also pretty useless as Mac addresses can be spoofed, but probably a little better than just using WEP.

A fellow FIOS user! I have the same router, but I only use the Wireless portion for testing purposes. It has WPA, but no WPA2 which is more secure.
WEP definitely works with the device + TnT Lite and VEGAn builds. WPA might have issues, but I don't usually use it so I'm not certain.
Thanks everyone. I'll try a different router and definately make the change from WEP to WPA. Router came this way by default and I was lazy. I should know better, I'm in the business
Not this thread, but anyone know what the deal is with no sound on 720 AVIs?

I assume you're using the vanilla player? Try something like Rockplayer, in the market. Xvid AVI's seem to work fine (I assume it's MP3 or AC3 audio, for your AVI's?). I usually use the vanilla player only for MP4 files.
