Call me impatient.... but I haven't heard any further details regarding the release of the Universal replacement.
A lot of the sites that reported the specs of the Omni were claiming that it was going to be released in early 2007... Now its almost April.
Has anyone else heard anything more concrete? Maybe this was just a false rumour?
Alternatively, I think if they release it too late and it isnt that "special" it will probably have a hard time competing with the newer VGA devices coming out by imate and the Toshiba G900.
Any comments???
I agree I want to know too !
I just hope there is a successor !
Got this feeling the Athena (HTC Advantage x7500) may be the replacement.
Well over a month later now. Something new somewhere already?
specs for OMNI are mostly rumours on the net & there is no hard evidence, but then again XDA Flame which expected 2 B release on Feb 2007...remains unknown..
p/s: it's not a Uni replacement though..Uni still remains... yeah...!
Well I was just wondering if it was still in the works. The rumours were so specific and the HTC Advanced and HTC Shift don't seem to fit the bill.
Ah well I'm still a couple of months away from contract renewal so I can wait I guess
I gave up waiting and got myself another universal as an upgrade.
My original universal had developed a fault.
The good thing is the Unis have really come down in price. I mean its still got fantastic specs, although only having UMTS as opposed to HSDPA is slightly date, but hey UMTS is still good. Loving the VGA screen on my Uni
I never quite understood the price of these machines. T-Mobile was selling them for 450 euro while the others were asking close to 1000 euro for their version.
I looked at the Ameo the other day and it does look great. The big screen is amazing. But then the whole thing is big and I just want the keyboard really attached.
I want a new and slightly improved Universal (more memory, faster, GPS, screen on outside)

I feel the same way. If I am to replace my Universal with something as big as this, the keyboard should be built-in in CLAMSHELL design.
Yeah those are all very reasonable upgrades that would make the Uni better. Add HSDPA/HSUPA and a slightly thinner profile and it would be a great upgrade.
Does anyone know any sales figures for HTC devices per model?
With the popularity of the Hermes, is it even worth their while to concentrate on this type of device when the slide out Hermes style is so much more popular?
The more advanced the device is, obviously the more R&D it requires hence costing more to make. Maybe they didnt make enough profit from the Universal.
Maybe the Omni was just vapourware talk to "test the waters"???
The biggest thing holding back the Universal from higher sales I would have to say is its least liked "feature"... the huge size of it. This would again cost more in R&D to try and make it a smaller size.
Not talking against or dissing the Universal as I would have one of these over a Hermes anyday, but may just be food for thought.
Any thoughts, objections or agreements?
X.
Well seeing how they are coming out with the Athena and the Shift they must see the market for bigger devices with phone capabilities.
The phones in thich niche cost a fortune and there is almost no competition. So they probably have quite a nice margin on them.
Yeah I think it was just the cost that put people off the Universal. It was way too expensive at launch, even if it was the top dog with all the features.

Hey,
I know its the age old adage of "New devices always around the corner" but I'd really appreciate if you could help me with a buying decision.
I really love the I-mate Jam, it has all the features I need, and the lack of wireless is not a big deal as it hasn't really taken off that much in the UK yet, plus I will be out of my current contract this month.
But I have used a friend's O2 XDA IIs (I-Mate PDA-2K) and wasn't convinced about its useability/reliability as a phone. But on the other hand I would love to not have to carry about a pocket pc as well as a phone.
I guess when Magneto is launched, it will at least be a few months before the new devices come out, and even longer before UK networks adopt them. But I can't help but think that Magneto will improve the overall experience with these kind of devices.
So is it worth buying one now?
I guess you guys may be sick of this following question, so feel free not to answer it:
With the other HTC devices having had leaked upgrades in the past, and with the "alledged" existance of a leaked HTC Magician Magneto rom, do you think that there is a strong chance of a leaked final upgrade for the HTC Magician?
Despite its many needless problems, the Jam has been a success for HTC so its fair to say that HTC wil follow up with another device of this similar form factor ie "Jam 2". Magneto is definitley out this summer.
Xmas season is where all retailers make their money. Put two and two togehter and you are looking at a Jam 2 in November - it would have to be Magneto since no one would buy one with the current OS at that point. But I don't see a Jam 2 coming out before then. In fact, if the Jam continues to sell well, they may just hold off to spring. But I thnk they'd be smarter to build on the momentum they've got and release Jam 2 for Christmas gift season.
But its up to you really what its worth to you. As a Jam owner I think the device is full of pluses and minuses. If you dont NEED its PDA capabilities tthen you're best off waiting a couple of months, because honestly the phone portion of it is adequate at best, primitive at worst. If you just plain need one, well then you need one. If its that urgent, but the Jam now and recoup whatver you can by selling it when the Jam 2 comes out.
You cannot future proof any device. There will AWAYS be something around the corner to trump what you have in you hand. Just a fact.
Also may be worth your while to give a look at the newly announced Nokia Series 60 touchscreen phones (N90 N91 or whatever the model number is).
Thanks very much for the feedback and the votes.
I guess the thing that I have to bear in mind is that being in the UK, where the MDA compact has only just become available, although I imagine the I-Mate version has been around for a bit longer.
I really dont see there being an HTC Magician 2 been available in the time frame I intend to buy a phone. I mean at present it is just a rumour, and it seems to go like this.
Rumour to product launch = 2-3 months.
Product launch to general availability = 2-3 months.
Like you said christmas period, so this is not so much of a worry for me.
What would annoy me is if they continue to sell the HTC Magician BUT with Magneto, and arranging it so that there is no method of upgrading. Hopefully the chances of that happening are slim?
What does concern me is:
because honestly the phone portion of it is adequate at best, primitive at worst

I've had a look around the forums, it seems to be mostly hardware problems, and that the software problems are fixable, can you elaborate?
I mean I currently have a Motorola V600 which drives me mad; poor phonebook, buttons on the side which consistenly switch the phone from silent to loud whilst in my pocket, and a earspeaker which keeps coming loose.
I mean the main things I want to use it for are as an in car MP3 player & Sat Nav with tomtom bluetooth gps, calendar to store constantly changing uni timetables, and to do list. Pocket PC Phones look good for me for the above reasons and because I can track my monthly contract use.
And magneto isnt going to affect me that much for my purposes I think, as WMP10 comes installed on the Jam. But it does look like magneto will improve phone functionality, which is why I'm curious to know if it is bad at the moment?
It sounds to me like you have just about talked yourself into getting a new Magician. I have had mine for 6 months now. My old phone was a SonyEricsson P800, when I bought it it was THE phone (for my needs anyway). I dropped my P800 in the lake (no lie), even though I got it working again, I decided to look into a replacement because I didn't really trust it anymore. My Jam has been great. As for the complaints, well you know how people love to complain. I haven't found any real faults with my Jam except that it won't activate MS Voice Command from the wired headset (which my P800 did). I use mine to the maximum and it hasn't let me down. I have a good friend that has one also and he only has one third party program which is Small Menu and he couldn't be happier with his Qtek S100. So the Magician works well as just a phone PDA and for Power Users too.
I wouldn't expect the masses to be getting their hands on a Jam2 until January 2006, and of course if you are one of the first to get one you will pay pay pay, like I did for mine. My friend paid 200 pounds less for his Qtek by waiting 3 months. Like you said, there is always a new phone coming, but the Jam is a real breakthrough product.

Phonewise: Sound quality is not up to par. Most accept it because the device does so many other things in a small form factor. But it if was a pure phone with this level sound quality, I think many would toss it. I myself use a bluetooth headset to mitigate this problem. The "twaeks" don't really help - I'd sum it up as cheap hardware. Same goes for the camera BTW: 1.3MP should be a good simple camera but obvious cheap hardware is a letdown. My friends Nokia 6670 mades this Jam camera look stupid - and both are 1.3MP.
Phone software: Its okay, not stellar. Many buttons need to be resized for true thumb operation eg numbers, flight mode, message pop-ups. Its poor design if people have to pull out a stlus to navigate phone functions. Also text message ergonomics are very weak. Nothing I saw in Magneto really addressed these obvious problems.
So as I said, its probably the tidest physical sized PPC phone package and that is its plus. The tradeoff is the shortcuts (low-quality components) that were used to achieve the price point. HTC is not likely to change that and Ihave not seen anything in Magneto to address the OS shortcomings.
So honestly don't agonize too much. Just buy if you're buying. There is no magic bullet around the corner. When all is said and done, a Magneto powered Jam 2 probably only feature Wifi, 3g (or some similar thing) and larger ROM as its meaningful improvements. All the things that people like or dont like will be same on that device.
Thanks for all the feedback, I have gone ahead and ordered an MDA compact, on contract. For a good price. Just gonna wait till it gets here.
Hi all,
Like most people who bought the Vario II in the first week it came out, it is time the contract is up... so I am looking for a new toy!!
I was originally tempted to get the Toshiba G900 before it came out, but the lack of a transflective screen, 3G-only, and the "won't wake up" problem were TOO MUCH for me to take! Even though it has nice resolution.
Kaiser sounds nice but it isn't really a very big step forward from the Hermes... yea its got better graphics and a built-in GPS, but not much else really. Not even a VGA screen. Probably not worth shelling out £500 for.
The E-Ten X800 (originally X500+) in theory is a very good candidate, but it is still not out!! Same with iMate's Ultimate series.
So what should I do?
Is the Touch worth the money?
Or should I go iPhone?
Or just keep the Hermes for another year...
Any advice welcome!
Thanks.
I'd keep the Hermes until something a little more revolutionary comes out.
But this did catch my eye the other day. Pretty much comparable to the Hermes (datawise, camera, etc.) but it's still not a big jump up from the Hermes if at all. But it does have a form factor I prefer (QWERTY always accessible without the flipping and rotation juggle).
http://www.mobileplanet.com/d.aspx?i=147071
Until the iPhone gets GPS, 3G, real OTA sync (Exchange or otherwise) and 3rd-party apps, it just can't compare. It is a joy to use and pretty to look at, but the functionality is way thin coming from a Windows Mobile, BlackBerry or even Palm device.
The new Nokia with the clamshell keyboard design and the keypad on the outside looks intriguing. However, if you're in the US, not sure if it supports US 3G bands.

Same here, unless I get a good upgrade.
I was going to replace my Hermes with the Kaiser, untill i noticed there is no LED flashlight. Horrible. I happen to use it as a regular source of light in various conditions with VJcandela. So i guess i'll just have to wait untill the Kaiser comes with a flashlight...

iphones suck... aside from the beauty factor. functionality wise, they cant hold a candle to the hermes or kaiser.
Yea I know, and so does iPod.
I bet there will be a shortage in the Europe and some general iPod-fanatics who don't know much except hair-care products will pay any price to get it.
This is UK not US so there is no AT&T lock-in.

pretty good business decision. you can probably sell it for twice what its worth. thats what happened here when people were dying for the iphone.
worthy upgrade
man,
i think u should go for something like the sony vaio UMPC.
or maybe the HTC OMNI when it comes out(it's sexy )
i'd upgrade when something similar to HTC universal comes out with 5" vga/better screen, vista ultimate ,80 gigs(ok, i'll settle for 40 for a start) and a truckload of connectivity options..(much like a tablet pc, but with UNIVERSAL form factor)
Yea I've got my eyes on the OQO UMPCs, because they have good transflective screens... but I have way too many gadgets already!
Vario II, XDA IIi, Nokia 770 (internet tablet), desktop, HTPC, rackmount home server, ITX automation server, car PC, home laptop, work laptop... not sure what I am going to do with an UMPC really!
Instead of the OQO, I'd wait for the HTC Switch. Looks like a much better package than the OQO2.
It's almost feeling like keep the Hermes for another year - all the other stuff (including the Omni) just looks too big - I was put off the universal because I felt it looked terrible.
Hermes just about has it all...
...although if a Treo came out with wifi and as loadsa ram...I might be tempted back...
Hi all,
Thinking about buying the HTC touch diamond 2. The thing is I like the look of samsung omnia 2, which has better specs than the diamond, however I prefer touchflo 3D and the form factor of the diamond and it seems a safer bet, plus it has the custom roms and excellent support of these forums
Now the diamond 2 has been out a while so would you still buy one now, or would you wait? Also are they usually reliable or are they prone to bad ones?
Cheers
I'd wait, Leo just got announced
that is, if you can wait
You should definately wait some months, don't buy a D2 then get dissapointed when HTC announce yet another phone. HD2 will definately be a phone you want to buy.
The Diamond 2 came out in April. Well that was 6 months ago. In 6 months the D3 will be out and so will other phones. You will be disappointed if you buy it now and learner that in 4 months a better phone will be out. I'd say upgrade to the HD2 or get the Omnia if you want it. I'm sure there will be a cook that will get TouchFlo3D onto it. Many people have it running on their Xperias. It's all WinMo so it all works the same.
TD2 is a fine phone and if it's in your budget and like the form factor then it's definately worth considering. You could wait for the next version but then you are playing the waiting game and you could end up without.
I have had the TD2 since it came out in the UK which is only some 6 months or so ago and I will be upgrading to the HD2 which is a phone with everything I need.
Although HD2 has almost everything I want in a phone I would never buy it just because of its enormous size. All of you guys are so excited about this device but none of you have had anything that big before. It would be very uncomfortable to carry it around. HTC Pure/Diamond 2 just came out here in the US on AT&T for a very affordable price. I don't know where you're located but if you're in US I highly recomend checking this phone out.
Cheers for the comments, I agree that the touch HD2 looks like an awesome bit of kit it just seems a bit on the huge size, and where at work I need to carry a blackberry around pocket space is hard to come by!
As a side note if I would get the touch diamond 2 I would get it on a 12 month contract so it would not be a huge amount of time to wait if say a snapdragon diamond 3 came out
Please keep the comments coming
I'd wait a few weeks and see what the n900 is like in the flesh. I wstched a couple of video's of it yesterday and I was taken.
Having had nseries phones up till I got my Diamond, O just wsn't immpressed with their touchscreen efforts, I went for the Topaz. Granted, ot is the best looking, both in terms of form factor, and the gui, my homescreem looks ****ing awesome for what is essentially a phone, and i'm on stock!
Having went onto maemos site snd had a hands on look at some of the developers using it, this thing looks amazing, the browser and desktop are totally stunning. The specs for it something else too.
Although the Topaz is highly moddable, most of them are to do with the look and user funtuality, not like the things you could do with a symbian device. Look for thing on here called phonejacker or something, I could do this on my n95, over bluetooth 2years ago, by simply running a python commamd, look at kerfuffle to get working on winmo. I could also use my phone as a wii remote. It's those type of things that I don't like about my Topaz, the potential to do things woth winmo, but after appearance, the nokia was better device.
If this kind of functionality can be brought to the maemo5 platform, then it's hasty goodbye this wonderful piece of eyecandy.
Why I don't doubt what your saying I have personally never been a fan of the symbian OS. Hence why I am stickign with WinMo its not the best but it does everything you want it just sometimes takes a long while to get there!
The n900 doesn't run symnian, it's on linux based maemo5.
The Diamond 2 is a great phone, and with the WinMo 6.5 upgrade will be as good as anything on the market.
The HD2 is way too big for my taste.
You can wait, but that is a perpetual cycle because there will always be a new phone coming out in a couple of months, so when do you stop waiting and actually get a phone?

Thanks Phil,
That kinda summs up where I am, the HD2 is an awesome speced phone but too big for me really, plus I have just got a 4.3" screen Archos 605 which will do a better job with video playback due to the higher colour pallet.
I think I just need to pay the money and get something, if something new comes out then a upgrade is a year away or just have to sell the TD2 and buy it sim-free worst comes worst. I know the TD2 has been out 6 month, but with the version just released in the USA I think it will most likely be sticking about for a while.

It's about 2/3 the thickness of the Topaz (about as thin as a pencil)
I see they've just added it to their products list I think it looks awesome!
I'm glad that some people realize how uncomfortably big HD2 is, and people who are waiting for this device will surely realize that once they get a hold of it.
Thank you everyone for you help,

Yeah but the Pure is on AT&T. Most people wouldn't want to switch over for many reasons. Like they are under contract, They Have a better plan than they can get on AT&T, Their network coverage is better.
And for people like me we love unlocked phones. We travel internationally and it's great to just swap sim cards without having to call the SP to unlock the phone. It's just worth it to pay the moey. Especially when your the only one to have it an people ask what phone it is and if they can get it. And I say In 6-12 months mebe. ok I don't say that but I would.
And for me I have a $40 my faves plan with 1500 txt messages and $5.99 unlimited data plan on T-Mo. I pay about $56 after taxes and all a month. I can use every feature of the phone and it works great on edge an T-mo has nothing to say about it.
The HD2 seems big. The HD seemed big but over the summer I got to actually see one in person while in Greece and I regreted not buying it over the TD2. It was smaller and thinner than I thought and it fit comfortably in my hand. The extra money it would have cost over the TD2 though is what initially changed my mind If I new how it looked in person I woulda paid the extra money.
If the HD2 isn't much bigger I may opt for it. But I hate txting on capacitive screens. Txting is so much faster, easier, and accurate on resistive screens.

Actually read my first response above. 3rd paragraph. If people see it in person they may change their minds as I did with the HD. I would love to see it in person first before I buy it but many people may be surprised.
Make a paper/cardboard cut out of the size and try to imagine it.
Getting the phone unlocked is super easy...don't make a big deal out of it. I would love to pay less and get tmobile but I find tmobile's reception inferrior to att. HD2 may be thinner than D2 but why are you bringing up just the thinnes? What about the height 120.5 vs 107.9? What about width 67 vs 53.1? Now that's some difference.

comparing it to the TD2 there would be a differnce. but after holding a Touch HD the hight and wiidth didnt matter much because the thinness made up for it. especially when in the pocket.
What i was saying that if the HD2 wasnt much bigger than the HD than its worth it. The original HD was iphone sized with a larger screen. The HD 2 is a little taller and wider but thinner. a few mm aint that big a difference. But before i make final judgnent like i did with the HD I'd like to see it in person.
Hd is at the maximum tolerable size I think, and I quite like the design. Looks much more modern than HD2. Few mm on a phone is very noticable.
Personally, i was gonna get a diamond 2 but... yesterday the hd2 got anounced.... so i think im gonna wait a little while longer because the specs on the hd2 are amazing
Hoping that in a way i help the users of this community, i also wanted to confirm the case of newton's rings on my TD2. The phone was bought in a phonehouse shop in Barcelona, on Jan 15. Yesterday (Mar 19) the dreadful rings made their appearance in the center part of my screen, resulting in low or no touch sensitivity in that part. HTC's original flip-case PO S451 has been used on this phone since day 1 and having read about the outrageously bad design of HTC resistive screens (as stated by many users of TP-TP2 / TD-TD2, unfortunately after having bought the device) Ive been extremely careful. Nevertheless, the problem did occur, on the same time period that did to most users (2 months). I dont care whether HTC covers or not, thru warranty, this issue. I dont care if i can temporarily solve this problem by the use of duct-tape (its sad even to type this). I dont care if a new digitizer/LCD screen etc is not that expensive. All i care is that i paid 350 euros for a phone that is called TOUCH Diamond 2, made from a company that is huge in the market, mid 2009 model, and i end up with a badly malfunctioning unit 2 months after purchase.
I suppose i fell on the trap of the 800x480 monitor combined with its great small size and stupidly ignored the outdated WinMo 6.5, the MSM72xx saga and of course the resistive display nightmare. I know that there are many users that will advogate for the contrary, but honestly, i dont think that this phone worths in any way its money. I doubt that i will ever buy an HTC phone again, at least not before i am absolutely sure that its money wellspent, which is definetely not the case with the TD2. After i check on the warranty situation in Spain, i will only be thinking of the most profitable (or less damaging in fact) way to get rid of this phone and check out my android options. 'Nouf said
PS. DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE

Edit: Just gave back the TD2 to thephonehouse shop, theyll get back to me with whether HTC Spain covers it or not. If it does, ill have a TD2 on sale, on great price, together with their original flip-case and a 2GB SD card for free. Ill get back to this post, in case somebody is interested in buying it. Best of luck to all TD2 users, i honestly hope that this doesnt happen to anybody, even though there are more than a few cases stated only in this forum..

Thanx and good luck to you with the TD2 I was just checking out a few Acer Liquid youtube videos. Snapdragon (underclocked), Android 1.6, flawless rendering/motion on GMaps street view, 0 lag on UI, 720p playback (not that its watchable on the display, just to evaluate the 768MHz Snapdragon) and of course capasitive screen 480x800. And 50 euros cheaper than my TD2.. What a mess i did with this purchase.. I just get the feeling that with the exception of the HD2 its not really worth bothering with their products. Too expensive for their MSM72xx illness..

Thats a very civilised way to talk to other users.. So, seeing that you are a senior member, you should be very well into things. Can you please explain to me and everybody else here, in what way is the TD2 better than the Acer Liquid? BUT DO EXPLAIN PLEASE, im really keen to know.. Win 6.5 (even with sense) is better than android (that will by the way be upgraded to Eclair 2.1 w MT support)? Is the JOKE of a processor that the MSM 72xx is any match even for the underclocked Snapdragon? Maybe its the 'almost capasitive-style sensible' (still laughing) wonder of a resistive display better than the Liquid's capasitive? Ive had the chance to actually check out the Liquid hands-on. I suppose that being so incredibly wiser than me, you have had hands-on and compared it with the TD2. So go on, im all ears.
According to Phandroid, HTC will only have one phone for the year of 2013. Article can be found here: http://phandroid.com/2013/02/26/htc-one-flagship/
This is a smart move on HTCs part instead of having multiple versions. Hopefully software updates will come a little quicker because of this move.

I've been think about this lately. HTC isn't as big as as its competition. If they're going to launch the same unit globally they will need to focus their resources on it to be able to fill orders. Especially if it takes off.

I really do hope that's the case. I've always thought HTC is mad for releasing so many variants and what not in a short amount of time. Its about time HTC came to its senses (lol). I've been wishing this would happen and cursing HTC for the One line (X,S,V,X+) etc the one S was the better one out of all in my opinion overall but lack of a 32gb model I had to hold on to my sensation for longer. Hopefully the One will change that. Seems good by reviews so far. Let's see

Is it truly a good thing they only release one device a year? Assuming the M7 is top spec for when it is released (which it is) -what is so wrong with releasing a M7+ at the end of the year with S800?
Why would people get offended or pissed off by this?
Personally I have absolutly no issue. If people want to purchase a M7 body with S800 (or whatever) in 6 months, I don't see a problem so long as its financially feasible for HTC.

People deserve to have the latest smarphone from a particular OEM, for at least an year, and everyone can't buy new device for ~700$ every six months.
As to why this is good news for some people, it is sort of the way your top end automobile companies work (most for that matter).
Whether BMW, Mercedes, Audi, or whatever company: you have an expected timeframe of how long they will keep a car relatively the same without a major facelift (5-7 years). When you purchase an automobile from one of these companies, you know for an x number of years the car won't be different in any major ways (of course there are the yearly upgrades and all, but you guys know what I mean).
Well when you compare that to mobile devices-where it seems (and has really been set by Apple) that many companies give their flagship device a one year span, HTC doesn't. They have been doing refreshes half a year within the release of their flagship devices which makes some people feel like they paid all this money for a device that was outdated by the same company too quickly. Whereas Samsung and Apple have been on a one flagship a year schedule.
For most people who do upgrades and purchase a phone every two years, it is really irrelevant whether there is a refresh later in the year or not. But for others who purchase the devices unlocked and are smartphone addicts, it could lead to you purchasing from another company.

But again... why exactly do people need a new device every 6 months...? I still fail to understand this.
Lets say HTC makes a great device for H1. People purchase this device.
They later refresh 6 months later with a superior process (best H2 can offer).
What do the people who purchased the H1 device loose? Perhaps resale value, but other then that, they don't loose anything.
Again, I fail to understand what is wrong with HTCs model. If anything it is BETTER for consumers because it means better tech is being pushed out earlier, and new devices are cheaper, allowing more people access.
The car model isn't a valid comparison imo... The price difference, combined with the fact that between model years- little changes in terms of performance (whereas cell phones will not refresh without a power upgrade) , makes cars and cell phones too dissimilar to compare.
Apple releases 1 device a year because it maxamizes profit. Consumers are stupid enough to believe that this is good for them, which is something I disagree with.
nvm, /delete post pls.
Ive read rumours before the m7 was announced about a m4 and q2.
So basically m7 high end, m4 middle, g2 low end. (all code names obv)
That to me is the perfect model htc should follow

I think so, this can creat a strong brand

The one surely is a great device and has lot's of buyers but is it really good to release just one ultra-high-end device for around 600 euros? I don't know many people (except of me and some of my friends) who will pay this much for a phone or would like such a big screen (even if there are phones with bigger screens around) so i think htc should release at least a mid class model with for example a 4" screen and maybe a low class model too..

They will release lower/mid end devices for sure. I think they just want to release one HIGHEND device per year.

nice device i would like to buy one
What the hell was so confusing about the HTC One family from last year? The flagship was the HTC One X. That was it. That was THE ONE. There was a supercharged one called the X+, but that was sensibly named with an extra +. Much like an iPhone that was 32GB or 64GB. It was still very much the same device. The One S was their midrange. The One V was their low-end. Three different price points, three different sizes. It was never customer confusion that caused HTC to not be as successful. It was just their crappy marketing and crappy availability. Since HTC is undoubtedly going to release lower tier phones besides THE ONE, they will be back in the same position they were in last year, meaning all this THE ONE crap is meaningless.
Samsung has a bajillion phones besides the Galaxy S III of all different sizes and specs that all have the same shiny marble rounded look and it has not hurt them in the least. In fact, the Note II and Ace are one of the highest sellers along with the GS3. The One X, S, and V were wildly more different from each other in looks. It's not a problem of confusion. It's a problem with marketing.
HTC is also driving themselves in a corner without releasing more high-end phones that cater to more corners of the smartphone space. Where is the Note II competitor? What about a small screen phone with high specs? There are plenty of people who think phones are getting to big and would want a smaller phone that has as much power as their bigger brethren. The other rather non-existent niche that no manufacturer is really pushing in the modern era is the cameraphone. Sure Nokia had the 808 Pureview, but that was more fanservice for the dying Symbian platform than anything else. HTC could delve into a competitor for the rumored Lumia EOS device. The area is fresh and fertile with almost no competitors. If they are bold enough to drop out of the megapixel race for "ultrapixels", they should be able to go bolder and say that cameras on phones are crap because the sensors are too small. For a minor bump in thickness, the phone being still very pocketable, you get a real camera! And a phone you can actually hold instead of a sliver of something that looks like it will bend in half.
If HTC can't handle just having one high-end phone, I'm really questioning their competence , considering they are still a multi-billion dollar company. Ideally they are using all the resources to make THE ONE the perfect device with perfect software and perfect hardware testing and perfect everything, dedicating more people to this one device than any other manufacturer would to their own flagships. The more cynical person would also wonder if HTC hadn't had a giant layoff after the poor results in 2012 and have just cut the teams for all the other phones. The easiest way to profitability is to fire your workers.
I think it's a very sensible move
They can focus on providing solid software updates
Nothing annoys people like buying a phone and having them release a slightly better model a few months later or even introducing a new flagship!
Sony have an issue of releasing too many phones and not knowing which is the true flagship, I think they're trying to follow a similar path this year.
quoting from phandroid
That’s not to say this will be the only high-end HTC smartphone of the year — HTC still has the mid-range sectors to target, as well as a Windows line to promote — but the HTC One will remain at the top of HTC’s totem pole.

I just watched pocketnow on YouTube and they announced that another windows 8 device will be dropping from HTC this year. I don't think it will be a high end device though.

I'd like that too - but I don't think they could do that now, because they'd be undermining their own marketing of the One if they come out and say "all smartphone cameras are crap - including the one on our flagship phone that it's one of its major selling points".
Veering wildly off-topic , something *I* think there's a niche for is a camera-oriented dumb phone. As it stands, if you want a new phone with an even half-way decent camera, you need to buy a high-end smartphone. There are many people (I suspect) who would love to see a device that is essentially a dedicated digital camera that can, as a secondary function, also send texts and make phone calls (but doesn't do smartphone stuff). There were some old Nokia and Sony Ericsson devices like that - the N93, for example - but no one seems to make them any more. I want a Xenon flash and a proper optical zoom.
