TV / Radio on HTC Uni's

Does anyone know anything about the release date, or whether the devices have been released.... for the Pocket PC that allows you to watch live TV feed via the SDIO Port?
I know there was a company that said March 06, but they've sorta gone quiet... there's radio devices out there, and devices for the PALM or CF Card... But anyone know anything about one that will be compatible with the MDA Pro???

Tv and Radio only via WIFI or 3G connections via subscriptions or internet based feeds only.
dont know any that will allow this via an SDIO slot, but would be interested if found, suspect if used it will be a massive battery drain.

Hi to everyone on the forum. This is my first post. I'm recently the owner of a new HTC Universal (T-mob MDA Pro).
Just thought I'd let you kno - I'm a PhD student working on mobile digital TV. I'm working in 2 European projects aimed at delivering mobile digital tv based at Brunel University. I currently have one of the digital TV SDIO receivers mentioned here. It's a prototype from a company called DibCom. It's a DVB-H receiver. DVB-H sends boradcast data in bursts so a receiver only has to be powered in bursts thus saving battery life. DVB-H braodcasts were tested in Oxford not so long ago. DVB-H broadcasts are not gonna be around until a few years yet so to test the chip I have to set up my own digital DVB-H channel and broadcast to myself! I'm working on user interface terminal applications, middleware and protocols. My job is to create the interactive side of the broadcasts - basically creating the interactive services like you see with regular DVB-T freeview only for mobile devices (and hopefully much better!). So interactive sports, shopping, gaming etc can all be done on your mobile device. That's the plan anyway! I'll try to attach a pic of the prototype chip here (taken with my MDA PRo!)

what do you believe the DVB-H reception will be like, I find freeview starts to go all blocky when its windy so I have no idea what DVB-H will be like if i was on the move (maybe on the bus or something).

Well this is why also the reason we needed a new technology to deliver to mobile devices. DVB-H doesn't need line-of-sight to the transmitter like DVB-T does. It will use "transmitter" and "receiver diversity" so that one strong signal can be singled out from lots of signal echoes and bounces. It is designed specifically for mobile use. One of the projects I'm working in is called PLUTO (Physical Layer DVB (that's the U!) Transmission Optimisation) where we're working on this exact issue. The second project deals with broadcasting applications and user interfaces voe rthe new network etc and is called INSTINCT World (due to commence in September). INSTINCT World is a world-wide project with China being the newest member so far.

If you have windows xp media center you can use www.orb.com for live tv and whatever media files you have on your pc. I use it all the time to watch sports while my wife is shopping at the mall. EDGE speeds are adequate to watch but it is a little hard to read the scores on my wizard. If you can get onto a wifi connection the picture comes in perfect. The program tests your internet speed connections so gives you the best picture for your internet speeds. Best of all it is free and works really well.

Sorry for being misleading: I wasn't saying the devices won't be out until next year (I've had mine for well over a year now), I was referring to the broadcasts - broadcasting in the UK (and most of Western Europe I believe) won't start until next year sometime (I'm unsure about the USA). DVB-H still hasn't got a designated broadcast radio band yet. This is all still up in the air. I'm sure there are many companies about to release or have already released the receiver chips. Nokia have released their DVB-H capable phones already and I have been working with a few of them. Only thing is they use their own proprietary software and drivers which cost $$$. I'm working to develop an open standard across the board and eagerly awaiting the JSR272 (a proposed API from Java ready for mobile television and multimedia). As you can see the Digital TV Group is a member of the projects I'm working in and these are the people who set the digial TV standards.

The media streaming your referring to though is Internet streaming. This is completely different and is an inefficient use of internet traffic/bandwidth (until internet router broadcasting protocols are properly used at least). With DVB-H you will get clear, crisp Digital TV and services over-the-air just like you can pick up a standard TV channel a home. Thanks for the info tho - I enjoy getting TV streams on my Universal.

Just in case anyone's interested in this, just found out from the manufacturer, that the items are available now, and work on analogue signals, so will work now too.
USD$150 is the price at the mo, which isn't toooo bad when you think of how much a portable TV would cost...
I'm gonna order one, and if anyone want's to know about it, will update this in due course

More info/details please

I checked out dibcoms website, from what I can tell, they are only making the internal chipset for the all in one analogue and DVB h tuner, not any ready to sell devices

I'm currently reviewing the SDIO analogue TV tuner from Eopstech. Both its power and sound is off-board due to the bandwidth limitations of SDIO.
Also, due to the bandwidth limitations, the bigger the screen size, the lower the frame rate. On my Magician in portrait mode, its very good. It slows down a bit in landscape. On the Universal in landscape it can be quite gittery but still watchable. The most annoying thing about it is the external battery pack which is quite bulky and only lasts 2.5hrs. However, you can plug headphones, power and an external aerial into it.

I haven't got a job - I'm a student! Just thought I'd let you guys know that mobile TV is soon on its way. There's nothing wrong with the pics. This is not a hush-hush project - far from it. I'm part of an open standards project not some secret corporate prototyping.
You can buy one of these chips yourself if you're interested - though they're not cheap!

Video Out through mini USB?

Has anyone looked into this? With the audio now being output there, is there another pin carrying video that's yet undiscovered? Thanks.

nope no video out from what ive researched. even if there were, its qvga resolution so you are fairly limited.
you could your soti pocket controller to control your pda from your PC, you get a real time feed of you ppc on your pc.

It is definitely possible to do it (even that I have no idea how).
Ateksoft has a program called WebCamera Plus which let you use your PDA as real-time webcam.

I'm using it on my TyTN and it works great.

using a pda or symbian smart phone as a webcam is possible as the software captures the straming video and transmits its as data packetrs via usb or BT to a PC, in which it is then decoded on the PC and the image/video stream from the camera is formed.
Actual video out (such as that accomplished with notebooks) via usb on the TYTN is another thing - from what I have read it might not be possible.

I googled video out via usb and found a 60 dollar cable that converted from standard usb to s-video and audio and I'm sure theres mini-usb to usb converter

Also, these things require SDIO support .. not sure if TyTN got one ..

It'd be easy enough to emulate VGA on your device and use that for presentations, but your limitation is lack of an I/O to the graphic chip. As such, you're stuck with streaming the display data, which will be slow (for games), but perhaps perfectly fine for a slideshow.
Next prob though is the hardware - you can stream from device to device, but not stream from device to a (mini-usb) wire to a projector etc - at least the hardware issues are well beyond my experience.
A streaming projector might be a good solution. But all in, I think you're generally stuck for a cheap solution to outputing video over USB without a surrogate device in the middle. And if you're gonna have a surrogate, you might as well use that as the display device.
Check out nyditot for a VGA emulator.

May I suggest a better way? Simply install PC-based Powerpoint viewer on storage card. That way you merely need to drop your card into an USB SD reader, connect the reader to any host PC, and run your presentation. I do this often and avoid traveling with my laptop.

One reason I've always disliked the Ateksoft solution is that it requires installation of Ateksoft magicry on the PC. A true webcam solution should simply make the PPC act like a dumb webcam, piping the audio and video to the USB. We've all experienced those cheap webcams which you just plug in to your USB port, and MSN or Yahoo or whatever can pick up the device as an audio/video webcam, no installation of drivers required.
Software which does for webcam what Softick does for USB mass storage is what I'm after...

You didn't say what you wanted by 'video out'.. but I can tell you there aren't any 'unused' pins in the USB pinout. They're all audio or usb data. If the TYTN supported usb on the go (which it doesn't seem to) then you might see it turn into a mass storage device or webcam easily..
But for the moment, no, theres no pins to tap a composite or vga signal off of. I highly doubt the device has such a chip on board.

eh, I wanted to output video to my car A/V system. since I can sync the video on my device to my media center, that would be the easiest way to take shows to my car. so the streaming or flash solutions really don't address the problem for me...thanks for all of the thinking on it, though

That's the kinda stuff i've always wanted e.i. connecting my PDA to the SVideo Input of my car screen.
Seems "easy" to do with activesync, but seems to cause trouble because of the lack of video stream on usb pinout.
I'm just letting out an idea : Might be possible to emulate an activesync connection and capture the sreeen of the PDA and broadcast it out on svideo.
(don't ask, I don't even have a clue of how to do that)
SOTI Pocket controler and My Mobiler can do that, any chance someone find out a way ?

TV streamed to phone?

Hey folks so I am trying to do something that I am not entirely sure I can do. I will try my best to explain it clearly and I hope one of you may be able to direct me in the right direction as I am having little luck on google.
Basically I have IPTV through my phone company. I have the option for a second box and am looking for a way to stream that feed through my computer. From my computer I would like encode the feed into a mobile feesable compression and feed it to my phone through.
Is anyone aware of anything like this that will work or something capable of doing this??
If someone even knows of a service provider that works directly with TV feeds over the internet for mobile I would be even happy with something like that. But of course ideally it would be better to be able to use my own services that I already pay for.
On a last note. My cell phone provider DOES offer tv for mobile but NOT for pdas. LOL and the TV service itself is lousy.

On further research while here at work. I came across the Slingbox media option. I was curious if anyone has tried this for there home system yet? The website states that it can be connected to your satellite or digital cable boxes but I have to admit I am confused with the interaction of the two. Mainly the remote control portion.
If you have a Sling box which is acting like a "tv" but actually defering that signal to a remote location like a laptop or phone how does this box change the channel if it's just receiving signal? Does the slingbox itself act like a uber remote control and has to be placed directly infront of the digital box to act like a remote to relay the information back to the remote device?
I apologize if this seems on the border of being off topic but the goal is to stream live TV to my PDA which I suspect one of you techy people may have tryed such a solution!

I have used the Slingbox mobile player extensively with my Mogul over the Sprint EVDO network...I LOVE IT!!! Occasionally it's a memory hog and I may have to reset the phone...but all in all the Slingbox will do what you are asking about.

I have loaded and been running orb now for the past week and have to admit I am extremely happy with this application. It is fantastic so far and the intereface is great and easy to use!!
However after continuing research I will definetly be investing into a sling box as I have a second digital box collecting dust and would love to be able to channel surf lol!! Will just have to run both I suppose. Orb for movies and audio and Slingbox for tv surfing!!

The Sling hardware has an IR transmitter dongle, (or two), that you point at the decoder boxes IR reciever. The Sling client app, (both mobile and PC), have a software controller counterpart that can even actually looks like the remote control, (PC version). All IR functions work great from the mobile and the PC clients!

I love the slingbox and use it fine on my titan, although have had issues on other HTC Smartphones. It basically captures any video signal and sends it over the internet for remote viewing. whbell is right, it has a IR blaster that you put on the front of the device you want to control remotely and it sends your remote control codes to the box. You don't need a seperate set top box as long as the people at home are ok with watching whatever you are watching. I have mine hooked up to my pvr and can pull up all my recorded movies, or more importantly, setup a recording remotely if I forgot to do it at home.
Definitely a must have.

ORB is great for TV, just install a TV tuner / capture card in your PC. Sling box is okay for people without PC's, but if you already have one setup with ORB, there is no need for Sling box.
BTW, if you use Windows Media Center,you could also check out WebGuide.

My S2 as a Smart TV hub idea

Hi all,
I had my S2 for a while now and I'm thinking of just connecting it to my TV to be use as a smart hub (media centre) as I don't have a smart TV. I'm sure I'm not alone with an aging S2 and moving onto a newer smart phone.
My Idea are:
- connect the S2 via HDMI to the TV
- use a small Bluetooth keyboard with track pad or maybe some other remote.
- try out probably XBMC
- Disable any phone feature from it (ie phone, sms, etc..)
My goal are:
- use it as a online player - Netflix, youtube, etc...
- Skype
- video player
- stream video from network
- audio player
This will be my first attempt and will be spending some money for the accessories.
Has anyone done a similar set up.
It will be great for some opinions or advice. Or issues it might not work.

You might want to think about how you're going to use it with the limited battery life first, because you won't be able to charge the phone when connected through HDMI.

I already do this occasionally albiet minus the keyboard atm,... I use it on short breaks away I took my Mhl cable and a short 1m hdmi cable to plug into the tv in the hotel room using Catchup TV app for more channels than they offered and TV Portal for streaming (free hotel Wi-Fi ftw! )... also use it for some other stuff such as watching avis I have already put on my 32gig card and finally playing my music collection through the tv speakers
re: power supply Mhl cable needs power/charger cable to work anyway also it charges at the same time

of course the phone charges when connected to hdmi. it does not even work if not plugged into the power outlet first.

I got a mhl cable and it's awesome. just plug it in and it works straight away. Got the cheap version though but I guess it won't make that much difference. All I need to do is get a mod to permanently set it up as landscape mode and probably increase screen size. Will look for a new rom probably that can cater the mod.
Just need to figure this all out before spending more on a keyboard.

Getting live TV to Nexus players?

So I just ordered a couple Nexus Players and after searching around Google I am not able to see how to get Live TV on the unit without getting the HDHomeRun gadget. I'd be looking to get signal from an OTA Antenna or cable. Right now I have a HTPC with a Ceton PCI tuner. I watch cable TV through my HTPC and WMC, and my OTA Antenna sits in the box at the moment since it really serves no purpose as long as I have cable. I plan to hook up both Nexus Players via ethernet cable to the home network. What are my options to get TV to them? Again, either cable or OTA Antenna signal. Thanks!

Yes kodi/serverwmc is one way but you will need to keep your htpc around and turned on.
HDHomerun is the other way that I know works, as that's what I use.

The Tablo network DVR. It is similar to the way the Silicon Dust tuners work but it is a complete DVR, except for the USB hard drive that you need to add. EPG is optional and you can do manual recordings without it if you wish to save on costs. If you prefer to have EPG service it is available for either: lifetime (unlike Tivo it is account based instead device based, you only pay once no matter how many you own); yearly or monthly. Lifetime is $150, yearly is $50, and monthly is $5. There is a 30 Day free trial included when you first activate the Tablo that expires if no subscription is made.
Storage is done by user supplied USB hard drive. The currently supported maximum HDD capacity is 5TB. Flash drives are not compatible. You can use spare desktop and laptop HDDs with certain USB hard drive enclosures, Sayba and Sabrent are known to be compatible. Which ever HDD you go with make sure to go to its maker's website and download whatever tools it has for your drive. Make sure whatever sleep or power down modes are disabled as they can cause disconnects. A new HDD being installed will be formatted causing the loss of all existing data. You can not upload content onto the Tablo to use as a NAS.
All TV, live or recorded is transcoded to H.264 for video and AAC stereo/prologic for sound to support the largest number of devices. Android TV devices are the strongest for Tablo playback on a TV Chromecast and Roku tend to be the weakest in terms of load up times and remote response. Because of the transcoding overhead it can take 6-15 seconds to tune into a new channel depending if you have Enable Fast Live TV Startup enabled or not.
Local streaming is supported out of the box. Out of home streaming requires EPG subscription.

That was one of the biggest reasons I ended up selling my Tablo. It takes away from the trigger finger surfing experience.
I ended up getting a HDhomerun Extend and love the idea of a network tuner. I love the quick tuning times in the Google Live Channels app. However, I wish it was more stable. I may have to give InstaTV a try and see if it works better. I am really hoping Silicondust gets their act together with their HDHomerun DVR system and improve the stability of their Android TV app.
